Eden Robins and Dr. Craig McClain join me on today's episode to talk about why they started a podcast to make boring science things not so boring with their new podcast. It's funny, it's witty, it's actually quite informative as it dives into science to make things like lichens and the Kreb's Cycle exciting. My good friend Dr. Craig McClain joins me on the podcast to announce the wonderful OceansDotComm for 2020. The first OceanDotComm was a huge success, where 38 Science Communicators gathered at the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium to tackle a topic and conduct a series of projects within a span of 5 days. There were ships, airboats, cultural dinners and lots of laughs involved during the challenge. That would be how I would sum up OceansDotComm2018. Now OceansDotComm 2020 is coming in October! Don't miss out, apply today: Website: https://lumcon.edu/oceandotcomm/ Application: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeG8oA7qaEgO1vIDp__ZjybHUmMWYQ3yggNX6ZFWKBD20aTGw/viewform Are you going to apply to OceansDotComm2020? I continue to throwback to my first episodes as we approach the 1000 episode mark here on the Speak Up For The Ocean Blue Podcast. Dr. Craig McClain joined me to discuss his website, DeepSeaNews.com, how it runs and what was up with his most recent spike of readers on the website. If you haven't heard this episode, you will want to because it lays out how Science Communication should be done. Have you come across news that was fake science news and wanted to bust the myth? Joe Sigurdson is the creator of the 100 Wave Challenge, the largest fund-raising event of the year for Boys to Men, a youth mentoring program he co-founded 20 years ago with help from his late, great father Herb, and his good friend Craig McClain. Over the past 10 years Joe and his team have rallied the San Diego surfing community behind the Boys to Men cause of providing at-risk youth the guidance needed to keep them off the streets, out of gangs, and away from destructive habits that destroy lives. Sadly, in San Diego, like many urban centers, that task is daunting. Yet thanks to Joe’s surfing buddies, and the larger San Diego surfing community, the success of the Boys to Men program is being championed widely by San Diego school administrators, teachers, and counselors who are blown away by the results. Their original San Diego Chapter has helped thousands stay out of trouble, and county officials are so fascinated by the results they want to make it available to every school in the county. This is all testament to a surfing community at its best. As is usual with heroic stories like these, there’s a colorful backstory involved. Joe Sigurdson made some bad decisions of his own back in the day, decisions that, for a time, turned him into a nefarious criminal, drug addict, and thug. In this episode, Joe gives us the gritty details of his bad deeds, his long road to redemption, and those experiences—good and bad — that motivated him and his friends to save the lives of kids in need. You’ll also hear from Joe Ross, who was 12-years-old when he joined the Boys to Men program, and today is one of their most prolific mentors. When you understand the amazing work these guys are doing, my hope is you’ll understand how easy it is to save some lives simply by catching a few waves or supporting somebody else’s effort at this year’s 100 Wave Challenge. To find out how, please go to boystomen.org where you can also learn more about the program, including how to start a Boys to Men chapter in your town. Today we discuss how to reprogram our thinking, adjust our point of view, and generate a compelling future that's bigger and brighter than we've ever dreamed possible. When it comes to expanding what's possible in our lives, the first and most important step in the right direction is changing our point of view. But, how do we actually do that? In my own life, I've learned that being of service to others will significantly shift our focus. Our lives become less about ourselves and more devoted towards how we can really contribute and make a difference in other people's lives. My first guest, Jim Justice, is someone that has really inspired me and helped change the way that I deliver my message in the world. Through his personal journey of entrepreneurship, he discovered a parallel path of pursuing his spiritual truth. This journey has led Jim to co-found an amazing app called The Vibe, which serves as a daily dose of mindfulness and guidance helping individuals live a balanced and fulfilled life. My next guests, Craig McClain and Joe Sigurdson, have co-founded an organization called Boys to Men Mentoring, which is helping to change the world through the care and support of our younger generation. Craig and Joe share how their non-profit organization is committed to creating communities of dedicated men who are able to guide and support at-risk, often fatherless, boys on their journey to manhood. We Discuss: Reprogramming our thinking and changing our point of view to a higher vantage point Breaking through the limits of our own contribution and making an impact in the world Significantly shifting our focus in life by giving back and being of service to others Becoming comfortable with a new perspective that is more aligned with who we want to be Utilizing the power of mindfulness, guidance, and balance in our personal transformations What sets The Vibe app apart from the other mindfulness apps available today The importance of a safe space to talk about our struggles, choices, and consequences Why we need the Boys to Men Mentoring program and how it's making a difference Why school shootings are on the rise and what most mass shooters have in common The courage to tell the truth and dive into the unknown parts of ourselves Visit: VoicesofCourage.us
Does a giant prehistoric shark lurk deep in the waters of the ocean, surviving against all odds to surprise us by occasionally biting a giant whale in half? No. But these animals did once exist and we don’t need to pretend they’re still alive to be blown away by their stunning biological features. We talk with Dr. Craig McClain about the amazing animal we call Megalodon. Read the episode notes

Dr. Craig McClain is into Science Communication and when I say he is into SciComm, this is the man who created Deep Sea News, one of the first marine science blogs. Creating innovative science products is not new to Craig, so when he contacted me about OceanDotComm 2108 and asked me to apply to come to LUMCON, I couldn't say no because I knew this event would be huge even though I didn't know what the event would entail as it was a mystery. Craig and his wonderful staff kept it a mystery from all of the other SciComm Experts. He did it for a reason. Take a listen to find out why Craig kept the SciComm theme a mystery and why he chose the theme he did.
Dr. Craig McClain is on the podcast. This is his second time on the podcast as he was on our second ever episode, so this is really special. Craig is the Executive Director of the Louisiana Marine Consortium (LUMCON) and the Chief Editor of DeepSeaNews.com. Craig is on the podcast to chat about OCEANSDOTCOMM, which is an innovative concept he has been wanting to do for a very long time. OCEANSDOTCOMM will be a game changer in Science and Conservation Communication. What is it? Well, you will have to listen to the episode to find out. After you listen, go here to apply to OCEANSDOTCOMM. Enjoy The Podcast!!! Let me know what you think of the episode by joining our Facebook Group for the Podcast. The current model for marine conservation funding is flawed because scientists and conservationists cannot fund for their infrastructure anymore. They can only fund based on projects and results. As usual, some organizations took advantage of the old funding model and results were not received by the foundations so everyone now suffers. Project based funding coupled with more organizations seeking funding impedes everyone from sharing money and only certain organizations, government departments and academics get funded well. Individuals and organizations are searching for ways by which they can raise funds to follow their passions and protect the ocean the best way they know how. These ways many not fit with missions for many organizations, so they tend not to get funded by foundations and other grantees. The individuals and organizations are turning to the web to raise funds through crowdfunding. I cover a few examples of crowdsource funding initiatives by some individuals to help get their campaigns out there (and hopefully their work will get you to contribute) and raise awareness that crowdsourcing is a great funding opportunity for many people and organizations within the Marine Conservation Field.
