This year's United Nations Ocean Conference held in Lisbon worked to chart a course for a Blue Deal to safeguard the economic and environmental sustainability of the seas. As Mr. Vivas says, with at least 3 billion people depending on marine resources for their livelihoods, it's crucial that we create a sustainable and resilient ocean economy that benefits us all.

We have focused the last few World Ocean Radio episodes on the value of ecosystems, how we assess, monetize and protect with new practices that are constructive and sustainable. Normally, our lifetime is too short to see any major changes. We don't notice mountains rise, the way rivers change their course, or how oceans are created. Entire valleys may be sinking, but it usually takes too long for them to sink entirely. Still, a group of scientists recently noticed there's a new ocean being formed really fast and we can even witness it appear. Not far away from the Horn of Africa peninsula, the sixth ocean is being born at the moment! By the way, there's a theory that claims the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans might just cease to exist, forming the new ocean basin. Eurasia will be split to form a new ocean, and all the continents will migrate to merge into the supercontinent. Another possible scenario claims the continents might merge into the uniform landmass, or form a circle with a large sea inside, and the Super Pacific Ocean outside. And since all the continents keep drifting northwards even now, it's quite probable that almost all of them will meet up somewhere at the North Pole. Mitch Etter and Brielle Rutledge are the indie pop group Hi Crime (@hicrimemusic). Mitch is a former member of progressive rock band New Ocean, in which he was the songwriter and bandleader, while at Truman State University. He is also currently the guitarist for Seattle-based group Skinny Teeth and former guitarist for folk rock band Day Laborers & Petty Intellectuals. Brielle started her music career with collaborations with rappers and producers when she was in college at Central Washington University. Mitch and Brielle launched Hi Crime as a duo in 2015, and recently added Kyle Armstrong, Cody McCann, and Hannah Chase to form a five-piece band. The emergence of a rapidly transforming Arctic Ocean challenges policymakers as the region holds both great economic promise and fraught environmental change, effectively making the Arctic a modern-day policy laboratory where important lessons for resolving international maritime issues should be better understood. A new CSIS report, History Lessons for the Arctic: What International Maritime Disputes Tell Us about a New Ocean, seeks to draw important historical lessons for the future of Arctic maritime governance by using three international maritime dispute case studies ranging from creating marine protected areas to ensuring freedom of navigation and resolving overlapping maritime claims in the Barents and Ross Seas, as well as the Turkish Straits (the 1920 Spitsbergen Treaty, the 1936 Montreux Convention, and the 1959 Antarctic Treaty and Subsequent Antarctic Treaty System).  The current model for marine conservation funding is flawed because scientists and conservationists cannot fund for their infrastructure anymore. They can only fund based on projects and results. As usual, some organizations took advantage of the old funding model and results were not received by the foundations so everyone now suffers. Project based funding coupled with more organizations seeking funding impedes everyone from sharing money and only certain organizations, government departments and academics get funded well.  Individuals and organizations are searching for ways by which they can raise funds to follow their passions and protect the ocean the best way they know how. These ways many not fit with missions for many organizations, so they tend not to get funded by foundations and other grantees.  The individuals and organizations are turning to the web to raise funds through crowdfunding. I cover a few examples of crowdsource funding initiatives by some individuals to help get their campaigns out there (and hopefully their work will get you to contribute) and raise awareness that crowdsourcing is a great funding opportunity for many people and organizations within the Marine Conservation Field. A: There were a lot of really good guesses, but none that went back in time quite far enough. There may have been some confusion as noted by Tony Butterworth over at the Home Made Hit Show. His answer was Perry Como's Catch A Falling Star, which the RIAA's own web site says was the first Gold single that was...and here's the important part...."officially" certified by the RIAA, which was founded in 1952.
