La rhétorique de Donald Trump sur les capacités militaires de l'Iran est contredite par ses propres services de renseignement. C'est le New York Times qui l'affirme, citant une myriade de sources anonymes au sein du renseignement américain. D'après le quotidien américain, Téhéran a « rétabli l'accès opérationnel à 30 de ses 33 sites de missiles le long du détroit d'Ormuz », et a maintenu « 70% de son arsenal d'avant-guerre ». Des chiffres qui contredisent directement Donald Trump et son secrétaire à la Défense Pete Hegseth. Tous deux, rappelle le journal, se vantaient d'avoir « décimé » l'armée iranienne. Des affirmations réitérées dans les colonnes du quotidien par une porte-parole de la Maison Blanche. Un responsable du Pentagone s'en prend même directement aux journalistes :  « Il est scandaleux que le New York Times et d'autres médias se fassent les porte-parole du régime iranien afin de présenter l'opération Epic Fury autrement que comme un exploit historique. » La guerre en Iran au cœur du sommet entre Donald Trump et Xi Jingping Le conflit au Moyen-Orient pourrait même « éclipser » ce sommet, affirme un ancien diplomate américain dans les colonnes de Bloomberg. Le président américain est en route pour la Chine pour parler commerce, ventes d'armes à Taïwan et de la guerre au Moyen-Orient. « Donald Trump a plus besoin de ce sommet que Xi Jinping et Xi Jinping le sait », souligne un analyste auprès du média économique. Pour juger ou non de la réussite de cette réunion Bloomberg préconise de surveiller les « trois B » : les achats chinois de soja américain, de bœuf et d'avions Boeing. Pour les grandes compagnies américaines, nombreuses à faire le voyage, précise le Washington Post, le marché chinois est crucial. Le Wall Street Journal raconte ainsi comment « deux milliards de pieds » chinois sont en train de fuir Nike. Sur les trois derniers trimestres, les revenus de la célèbre marque de chaussures étaient en baisse de 28% par rapport à la même période il y a cinq ans, s'alarme le journal. Royaume-Uni : Keir Starmer sur la sellette ? Le locataire du 10 Downing Street est « sur le départ », écrit The Economist, avant de poursuivre : « Plaignez son successeur ». The Guardian revient de son côté sur deux jours de « confusion et de tension » outre-Manche. « D'un côté, résume le journal, plus de 90 députés réclament la démission de Starmer de l'autre, une lettre signée par plus de 100 députés affirme qu'une course à la direction du parti serait absurde et préjudiciable. » Starmer « bénéficie d'une bouée de sauvetage », veut croire le Guardian, car son principal challenger, son ministre de la Santé Wes Streeting « ne bénéficie pas du soutien nécessaire ». Quoiqu'il en soit, résume The Economist, la situation économique du pays reste « catastrophique ». « Pour l'instant, raille l'hebdomadaire, les électeurs britanniques ne peuvent qu'assister, impuissants, au spectacle familier d'un Premier ministre luttant pour sa survie. » Espagne : le président du Real Madrid à l'offensive Le président du club madrilène a tenu hier une conférence de presse. « Récit d'une intervention lunaire », titre L'Équipe. Florentino Perez, « en roue libre », a « multiplié les dérapages, notamment sexistes », écrit le quotidien.  Après une décennie d'absence médiatique, raconte El Pais, le président du club a dénoncé un prétendu complot visant à l'évincer. « Il faudra me tirer dessus pour se débarrasser de moi », a-t-il soufflé au terme d'un « monologue décousu et répétitif », relate le journal espagnol. Florentino Perez a annoncé la convocation d'un nouveau processus électoral pour lequel il est candidat. « Que ceux qui veulent ma peau cessent de se plaindre et franchissent le pas », a-t-il lancé.

Ep 552 - Conserve 30 percent of BC by 2030 Guest: Andy Day By Stuart McNish   On April 22nd of 1970, Earth Day kicked off what would become an international movement to protect the environment. 55 years later, the winds of change are blowing in the opposite direction. In Canada, political leaders have stepped back from the environment in an effort to win votes.   Andy Day, the CEO of the BC Parks Foundation, says, “The Earth is where we live, work and play. This year, more than any in the past 55, it is vitally important for us to renew our commitment to protecting our precious planet.”   Day says, “The demand for parks and protected areas is growing. The pressure on wildlife, habitat, traditional uses, infrastructure, and ecosystems is increasing through rising use and threats like pollution and climate change. Anna Kusler, a graduate student in the Department of Ecology at Montana State University, discusses her passion for all animals and her research on cheetahs in central Zambia. 

On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with Bruce Weinstein, food writer and author of 40 books, 38 of which are cookbooks. His latest, written with husband and frequent collaborator Mark Scarbrough, is “Cold Canning: The Easy Way to Preserve the Seasons Without Hot Water Processing.”   “Cold Canning” offers a primer on easy, safe, budget-friendly preservation. The book has 425 recipes for small-batch jams, jellies, chili crisps, pickles, krauts, kimchis, and more that will safely keep for months to years in the refrigerator or - with the exception of pickle-like foods - in the freezer.   “One of the things that I love about doing this small batch and no processing is that I can use less sugar because I'm not trying to make it shelf stable,” Weinstein explains. “That's a huge difference in taste and in health.”   “Do I think that we should all take all the sugar out of our diet? No, because then life would not be enjoyable at all,” he continues. “Everything in moderation.”   The duo met after Weinstein completed his first book (“We both loved food and we both loved to cook,” he says.) They both had other careers before diving into the food space. Weinstein went to culinary school and then worked in advertising for 20 years before becoming a food writer. Scarbrough was an English professor; he still teaches literature.   Weinstein's eating philosophy: cook, share food, enjoy.   “Eat real ingredients. … It'll make you feel better,” he says. “[You'll be] easy to get along with and people will like you.”    Bruce Weinstein shares what led to his love of cooking, his professional journey, and his favorite Jewish foods. It's been a hot, dry summer, and in late July the Suffolk County Water Authority issued a Stage 1 Water Alert urging its customers to immediately reduce water consumption. The editors are joined this week by senior reporter Michael Wright, who has a story in the paper naming the South Fork's biggest “Water Hogs,” and Daniel Dubois, SCWA's director of communications and external affairs, who explains how summer demand impacts water supply and shares steps that residents can take to help alleviate the situation.

In this episode of Nature Breaking, host Seth Larson sits down with Linda Walker, WWF's senior director of corporate engagement for forests, to explore the urgent threats to global forests and the role of business in helping reverse current trends.  Last month, alarming new data were released showing record-breaking tropical forest loss in 2024—an 80% increase over the previous year. Forests are critical to our planet and to us as humans, so we need to double down on efforts to stop the loss of forests where possible and more responsibly manage forests that are earmarked for production. Businesses have a big role to play because 54% of the world's forests are managed either wholly or partly for the production of things like timber, pulp and paper, and furniture. This interview dives into how some companies are already making a difference, including by participating in Forests Forward—WWF's flagship program for corporate leadership on forests launched in 2021. Linda and Seth also discuss what a new report, the Forests Forward Impact Report, reveals about the program's progress and the challenges ahead. 

Dargaville residents are being asked to conserve water after maintenance teams have worked for hours to patch major breaks in the system. At one point the towns reservoir was down to 10 percent full. Water trucks from Whangarei, Maungaturoto and Ruawai have been pumping water back into the town supply, but have been struggling to keep pace. Recently, I was planning my dream retreat in Italy when something felt…off. My mind was buzzing with excitement, but my heart kept whispering: Conserve your energy. Focus on what you came here to do.   It wasn't easy to let go of the planning and ideas swirling in my head. It was like a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the next. I kept second guessing my inner wisdom and answers. Those old failiar sabotaging patterns are hard to beat, aren't they?! But when I paused and connected with my higher self (for the fourth time), the answer became crystal clear: My soul's calling right now is to focus on completing my book by summer. Everything else can wait.   This practice of Dharana—pulling away from distractions and focusing on what truly matters—has been a game changer for me.   So, I invite you to reflect: What is your soul calling you to focus on?
