The Red Sox investigation results have been announced and Alex Cora is INNOCENT! Today we talk why the 2018 World Series title has been proven to be as clean as possible, the odds that Cora will return as the Sox manager in 2021, recap a phenomenal Section 10 Roundtable Part II and give further results from the Sox investigation to prove they didn't do a damn thing. We then have an interview with 2013 World Series champion Daniel Nava! With Nava we discuss his grand slam on the first pitch he ever saw in the majors, his first "welcome to the big leagues" moment, how terribly awful that 2012 team was, his favorite moment from that magical 2013 season, the impact the marathon tragedy had on the club, his full breakdown of the clutch homer he hit in Sox first game back since the bombing, what it was like playing in the World Series and being near that Papi speech in the dugout in St. Louis and what it meant to win it all at Fenway for the first time in 95 years. Inside this edition of Without a Curse, Alex talks about what has been a dreadful stretch for the Red Sox. The starting pitching continues to be horrendous, and the situational hitting has been just as bad. That's a recipe to lose a lot of ball games. Arguably the biggest problem with the Red Sox lineup is that it's only been five hitters deep. Mike Napoli has an OPS below .600, and the bottom three hitters have been automatic hits. Red Sox right fielders are slugging below .200 this season as well. There have been a few scapegoats, as Juan Nieves, Edward Mujica and Allen Craig are no longer with the big league club. If Justin Masterson and Daniel Nava don't pick up their performances, Alex says they could be next. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex talks about the AL East standings, and the red-hot Yankees. Michael Pineda has been dominant this season, as has Andrew Miller closing out games. Speaking of dominance, that's just one of many words that can describe the run Bryce Harper is on. Would the people who have called him a bust like to take their words back? Follow Alex on Twitter, @AlexReimer1. No show next week, as Alex will be graduating college. Without a Curse returns on Monday, May 25.
Rob Bradford is joined by Red Sox outfielder Daniel Nava, who goes through the entirety of his season, dating all the way back to last offseason. Inside this edition of "Without a Curse," Alex recaps a rather disappointing week for the 5-8 Red Sox. More injury woes may be on the horizon for the hometown team, as Koji Uehara and Dustin Pedroia are both being examined Monday in Boston. Uehara felt stiffness in his shoulder prior to Friday's game, though his long toss session reportedly went well prior to Sunday's contest. It's unsurprising that the 39-year-old Uehara is dealing with a shoulder injury, given that he pitched 88 innings including the post-season last year. Closers are volatile by nature, and the Red Sox signed Edward Mufica this winter to serve as Uehara insurance. Pedroia supposedly suffered a wrist injury during last weekend's home series against the Brewers, and has scuffled at the plate since. The Red Sox don't have a lot of middle infield depth in the organization, so Pedroia's injury could be a devastating blow. Shane Victorino is slated to begin a rehab assignment this week, and Alex says why Jackie Bradley Jr. should be the first man sent to the minor leagues when he returns. Though Bradley's played exceptionally well 2013 both offensively and defensively 2013 he has a less proven track record than Daniel Nava, who also has minor league options remaining. At this stage in the season, it's all about maintaining the most organizational depth. Alex recaps the series win against the Rangers, and series loss to a depleted, injury ravaged Yankees team. Alex tells you why Pin Targate is an uninteresting story, shares his frustrations with instant replay, highlights the incompetence of the top of the lineup and more. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex recaps the past week in the AL East. The Rays are on top of the division alongside the Jays and Yankees, but are dealing with a multitude of injuries of their own. Matt Moore will likely need Tommy John surgery, and Alex Cobb has been placed on the 15-day DL as well. Tuesday is the one-year anniversary of the tragic Marathon bombings. This will be a week of reflection, and a chance to remember just how important the Red Sox are to this city. The club's win in its first home game following the bombings wasn't just important because it was a decisive victory. But it was the first time that fans could be proud of their team in nearly 18 months. Email Alex, ajreimer0@gmail.com and follow him on Twitter, @AlexReimer1. Read him all week on BostInno, and listen to his weekly co-host appearance on "The Big Show Unfiltered," Friday 3-6 p.m. EST.
Alex talks about the impending Biogenesis suspensions to lead off this edition of "Without a Curse," and how plausible it is that Alex Rodriguez could be banned for life. It is clear A-Rod isn't getting suspended for just using steroids. He is getting suspended for conduct detrimental to the game, as MLB has evidence he obstructed their investigation into Biogenesis. Alex also discusses Buck Showalter's comments about how it would be a shame if the Yankees were exonerated from paying A-Rod because he was suspended. Players sign guaranteed contracts in baseball, and teams should have to honor those questions. If contracts can get voided if a player is suspended for steroid use, then there is no significant long-term consequence for signing a steroid user. As far as on the field new goes, the Red Sox pulled off a major trade, acquiring Jake Peavy at the trade deadline. Alex thinks the Peavy deal is a big winner for the Red Sox, as it improves them in the short-term and doesn't hinder them in the long-term. Plus, Stephen Drew is still here and Jose Iglesias isn't. There's that too... Alex recaps the past week in Red Sox baseball, including the controversial 8th inning against Tampa Bay on Monday which included a base running blunder and an umpiring blunder for the ages. Was John Farrell, Daniel Nava or Jerry Meals more to blame for Monday's loss? The Red Sox recorded their 10th walk-off win of the season early Thursday morning, in one of the wackiest games you will ever see. Alex talks about last night's win is another example of the tremendous resiliency of this team. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex looks at the biggest winners and losers from the non-waiver trade deadline. Many teams inexplicably decided not to sell, and thus find themselves on the losers side of the equation as the calendar turns to August. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.
Inside this edition of "Without a Curse," Alex says whether you're an optimist or a pessimistic determines how you view the Red Sox. They still lead the division, but are a mere five games from last place. With one bad week, the Red Sox could find themselves at the bottom of the division rather than at the top. The bullpen continues to implode, as Andrew Bailey was removed from the closer role this weekend. The Red Sox are running out of bodies in the back-end of the bullpen, but Alex still says they shouldn't panic and trade away valuable prospects for a veteran reliever at the trade deadline. The problem should still try to be solved internally. Plus, Ben Cherington doesn't exactly have a stellar track record when it comes to acquiring relievers. Jon Lester is still in the midst of an extended run of mediocrity, and Clay Buchholz may be on the disabled list longer than first expected. The starting rotation, which was so good earlier in the season, is now littered with uncertainty. If it wasn't for John Lackey, they would really be in trouble... (as weird as that is to say, it's true). Though Jose Iglesias continues to hit, many members of the lineup have slumped in the month of June. If Mike Napoli and Will Middlebrooks can't produce consistently, and if Daniel Nava, Mike Carp and Jarrod Saltalamacchia cool down, the Red Sox could struggle to score runs. Conversely, bullpens are volatile by nature and the Red Sox could find the right combination at the back-end at any moment. Lester could pitch like he did in April and Buchholz could return next week. Napoli's June could prove to be a blip on the radar screen, and this could truly be a year of progression for some of the seemingly overperforming positional players. It depends on how you look at it. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex looks at the AL East standings, and tells you just how dominant the Blue Jays have been in this 10 game winning streak. The Dodgers and Angels have not caught fire like the Jays have, and Alex says it is already too late for both of those teams. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.
Inside this edition of "Without a Curse," Alex talks about the first place Red Sox, who after taking two of three from the Rangers and Angels last week, have the best record in the AL. Jacoby Ellsbury returned to the lineup this weekend, and is in the midst of an eight game hitting streak. Ellsbury has nine extra base hits in this stretch, and is a vital component to the long-term success of this lineup. David Ortiz has hit three home runs in four days, as his OPS is well north of 1.000. Ortiz, like last season before he got injured, is one of the best hitters in baseball. Though those at the top of the lineup receive most of the attention, Alex says the role players on the team are arguably the biggest reasons why the Red Sox lead baseball in runs scored. There isn't an easy out anywhere in the lineup, and that is due to the contributions of Daniel Nava, Mike Carp, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and others. Jose Iglesias hasn't been an easy out since returning to the major leagues, as he's enjoying a 13 game hitting streak. Alex' long-term opinion on Iglesias hasn't changed, but he believes Iglesias should play everyday until he cools off. If that means taking at-bats away from Will Middlebrooks (once he returns) and Stephen Drew, then so be it. Last week's amateur draft, in which the Red Sox selected left-handed high school pitcher Trey Ball with the seventh overall pick, is briefly recapped as well. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex discusses the AL East standings, and wages a war on extra innings. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.
Inside this edition of "Without a Curse," Alex recaps the Red Sox home opening series against the Orioles. Alex talks about the brilliance of Clay Buchholz in the home opener on Monday afternoon, and how Buchholz's early success is a reminder at just how dominating he can be. At 28 years old, this is a make or break year for Buchholz professionally. Alex also talks about the decision to play Daniel Nava over Jackie Bradley Jr. in left field, and how it paid off in a big way for manager John Farrell. The sellout streak, spanning from May 15, 2003 to April 10, 2013, came to end on a damp, cold early April evening on Wednesday night. Alex says the sellout streak, though it had to end, represents just how successful this team has been over the past decade. The Red Sox still own this region, which is evident by how quickly fans are willing to jump back on board after a good start. But now things may just be returning to normalcy a little bit, as it's not normal for any baseball team, no matter how good it is, to sell out a midweek game in early April. Joel Hanrahan blew his first save of the season on Wednesday night, and Alex predicts Hanrahan won't be the closer by Memorial Day. He may be the third or fourth best pitcher in the bullpen. A final take on the Stephen Drew and Jose Iglesias shortstop psuedo-controversy, and injury updates on John Lackey and David Ortiz are provided as well. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex looks at the AL East standings, where the Yankees are back at .500. The Yankees played the Indians this week, and Alex tells Terry Francona to stop making smarmy remarks about the treatment he received in Boston. It comes off poorly. Speaking of poorly, many aces have performed poorly to open the season, including Roy Halladay. Alex also says why the Jered Weaver injury could potentially derail the Angels, as they may struggle to replace him from within. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.
