The four discuss how the movie is mostly about Mary Jane's failed Broadway career, all the bad CGI, Peter Parker basically becoming Austin Powers, and how there are simply too many villains. Peter... these are the years when a man changes into the man he's gonna become for the rest of his life. Just be careful who you change into. This guy, Flash Thompson, he probably deserved what happened. But just because you can beat him up doesn't give you the right to. Get ready to "Damn the man! Save the Empire!" because this week on Shoot The Hostage, Dan and Sarah are diving deep into the gloriously messy, utterly 90s, and undeniably flopped cinematic experience that is Empire Records (1995). It's not quite Rex Manning Day just yet, depending on when you're listening, but we're close enough to celebrate this box-office flop that holds a special, possibly embarrassing, place in at least one of our hearts. Join us as we try to figure out why this ensemble piece, directed by Allan Moyle and written by Carol Heikkinen, starring a fresh-faced bunch including Liv Tyler, Renèe Zellweger, Robin Tunney, Ethan Embry... and even a fleeting credit for a certain Tobey Maguire (who may or may not have been lost to the 90s haze on set) failed to ignite the box-office despite its killer soundtrack. Expect the usual blend of questionable observations and sarcastic commentary as we dissect this quintessential movie released in the 90s. We also ponder: Questionable romantic gestures involving feet Sarah's nostalgic love for this film and Dan's slow but steady descent into not-quite-hate Our general bewilderment at the sheer volume of music crammed into 90-odd minutes Comparisons to the Breakfast Club (which we covered – check it out) And why this might have flopped at the box-office If you're a fan of hangout movies in the vein of Richard Linklater's character-driven narratives or the retail-centric vibes of early Kevin Smith flicks, you might find something to love (or at least tolerate) in Empire Records. So, tune in for spoilers aplenty, personal anecdotes, and a deep dive into a film that may have flopped at the box office but definitely left a lasting impression (on some of us, anyway). You might even find yourself wanting to celebrate Rex Manning Day after listening… or maybe not. You've been warned! Twenty-five years ago, director Curtis Hanson (8 Mile, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle) followed up his widely acclaimed crime drama classic LA Confidential with this quirky adaptation of the Michael Chabon novel of the same name. This tells the simple story of Professor Grady Tripp (Michael Douglas) who wrote ONE great novel several years and is having.....some difficulties....writing the follow-up. Beyond that, he has one headmaster's wife (Frances McDormand) who he's been having an affair with, a highly impressionable much younger student (Katie Holmes) who is enamored with him, a nebbishy editor/publisher (Robert Downey Jr.) who keeps hounding him for that next book, and.....a wayward student James Leer (Tobey Maguire) whom he gets mixed up with in some incident involving a dog that gets shot. James Leer also looks up to Grady and also just might be The Next Great American Writer. And there's more plot and several more characters to boot....plot is almost incidental as this Pittsburgh-set character comedy has more to it than plot. How about interesting characters, comical situations, and loads of fun dialogue to boot!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

LOOK OUT! Your friendly neighborhood Dinnermen are at it again when we eat Cup of Noodles, cranberry sauce, sweet potato casserole, and Dr. Pepper before we discuss Spiderman (the Tobey Maguire one). This movie is a great watch if you aren't paying too much attention to the strange relationships and underdeveloped characters. We agree that Willem Dafoe is wonderful as Norman Osborn and could possibly carry the film. Too bad Spiderman/Peter isn't as well developed as Harry Osborn. As a whole, the film is an innovative superhero movie which makes it undeniably likeable in the end even though Peter isn't.

Who better to tell us about the civil war than the 90s, Ang Lee and the singer Jewel?! This week, the guys discuss Ride With the Devil, a film quintessentially 90s but all about the battle between the North and South! Does this movie have the most obvious 1990s casting of all-time and/or is it secretly brilliant to cast Tobey in the role of a literal outsider? The guys also discuss the notion of having an outsider perspective on this war, the revenge subplot that is promptly dropped, a wild Brooklyn Nine-Nine theory and much more. Next week: rank 'em! Questions? Comments? Suggestions? Despite numerous stumbling blocks leading up to the release of No Way Home including a temporary ending to the MCU/Disney and Sony deal, Covid protocols and the uncertainty that both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield would be willing to return. But it all worked out in the end with a pretty crowdpleasing experience at the time and a box office to the tune of 1.9 billion dollars.
