En este maremágnum de excesos y escatologías, particular ensoñación de Damien Chazelle sobre los años 20 y la transición del cine mudo al sonoro en la Meca de Hollywood. La película patinó en la taquilla, denostada por bastantes y muy aplaudida por algunos. Fue calificada de pastiche, demasiado extenso y con ínfulas. Tiene escenas innecesarias, la huida a Méjico escapando de los gángsters está de más. Me reí con los ademanes de Brad Pittb imitando a John Gilbert, con los estudios Kinescope y la secuencia genial de Nellie acudiendo a su primera cita de trabajo con una resaca criminal, y seguí los pasos de la mano de Manny el mejicano asistente de dirección quiere formar parte de algo más grande que la vida. Para exponer su irreverente sucesión de fiestas, borracheras y rodajes el autor se inspiró en obras literarias como Hollywood Babilonia de Kenneth Anger, donde se narra la lujuria, sordidez y excentricidades de la fábrica de sueños. O en las memorias recogidas en The Parade´s gone by, de Kevin Brownlow. Y de fondo una historia de amor condenada al fracaso, un actor alcohólico y su declive, un músico negro explotado, estados de ánimo, alegrías y depresiones muy presentes en Whiplash y La La Land, y un antro de perversiones en las entrañas de una montaña, el ojete de Los Ángeles lo llama el mafioso macilento interptetado por Tobey Maguire en su única escena del film. It played a pivotal role in Brown v. Board of Education (1954), the landmark Supreme Court case that declared racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional. Through its Legal Defense Fund—established in 1940 and headed for a time by Thurgood Marshall, who would later become the first Black U.S. Supreme Court Justice—the organization spearheaded a range of major civil rights cases.Beyond litigation, the NAACP was instrumental in pushing for anti-lynching laws, though federal anti-lynching legislation would take over a century to pass. The group's efforts laid the legal and political foundation for the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Its influence continues today as it monitors civil rights violations and advocates for racial justice nationwide.Tom Goldstein, a prominent U.S. Supreme Court advocate and co-founder of SCOTUSblog, testified in his own defense during his federal criminal tax trial in Maryland. This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes revisit Curtis Hanson's "Wonder Boys". A funny character drama about authors.Both Mike Butler and Mike Field really enjoy this film, especially its performances and lived-in storytelling. Michael Douglas delivers one of his most relaxed and likable roles, supported by an excellent ensemble, including Tobey Maguire and Robert Downey Jr, that gives the movie its healthy dose of charm.Butler's one sticking point comes near the end. It's not that the film opts for a happy ending, but that everything falls a little too neatly into place for Douglas' character, leaning into a Hollywood resolution that feels slightly too convenient. Even so, that criticism barely dents what is otherwise a terrific film."Wonder Boys" is one of those movies that rewards revisiting and is easy to recommend to anyone looking for a movie for grown-ups about grown-ups.
