Today's word of the day is ‘Wednesday' as in not Monday as in not Tuesday or Thursday, but Wednesday. The middle of the work week. It's Tom Brady's new off day. We've seen all this drama surrounding Tom Brady and his family. That's for him to deal with. Him to make decisions for himself. He went to the Bahamas in the middle of training camp. But this is too much. A personal day each week in the middle of the season. Is it for rest? Is it for family? Is it for recovery? (8:10) There were three terrible blown leads in the NFL this weekend. Improbable comebacks. The Dolphins came back from 21 points back to beat the Ravens. The Jets scored two TDs in under a minute to beat the Browns. The Raiders blew a 20 point lead to the Cardinals and lost in overtime. How do you get your focus back? (11:00) Jerry Jones is never selling the Cowboys. He keeps reminding us. But what if the price is toooooooo right? (13:25) So You Wanna Talk To Samson!? Someone asked me about the new MLB. That means the MLB where minor leagues are cut down. What happens to scouting? Draft? Teams? (24:00) Review: Chasing. (28:00) The Pittsburgh Pirates are a bad team. The Pittsburgh Pirates are a bad organization. The Pittsburgh Pirates hit a new low this weekend when a player was eating sunflower seeds mid play! (36:30) NPPOD. (41:00) Stephen Strasburg's career might be over. Signed one of the biggest deals ever back in 2019 and he's pitched 8 games since. That is called getting Boras'd. The Nats rallied in the late innings to edge the Marlins 5-4 and snap a five game skid. Al & Mark begin with how the comeback started; "Joey Four Bags" Inside-the-Park in the bottom of the 7th. Meneses now has slugged nine HRs since being called up after the trade deadline. (06:10) CJ Abrams had a two run triple to tie up the affair in the pivotal 7th and his average this month is up to .313. His infield mate Ildemaro Vargas delivered the go ahead hit; a RBI ground rule double in the bottom of the 8th. Hear how surprising his WAR is this year in limited time. (18:03) Josiah Gray struggled again and gave up a HR for the 13th consecutive start. This leads to a discussion of whether or not the team could end his season prematurely since he has not been pitching well as of late. (25:30) Cade Cavalli suffered a setback as he experienced right shoulder discomfort in his first throwing session since landing on the IL. The Nationals say they are not concerned, but are you? Al puts in perspective how disappointing 2022 has been for Cavalli. (32:55) Stephen Strasburg spoke with the Washington Post and it was a revealing piece. The World Series MVP expresses concern about ever being able to return to the mound. Was this first step towards a goodbye? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The Nats topped Oakland 7-5 in extras for their first walk-off win of the season as "Joey Four Bags" crushed a 3 run shot in the bottom of the 10th. Al & Tim discuss the next chapter in the unlikely story that is Joey Meneses as he now has seven homers since being called up a month ago. Meneses on Thursday had four hits and is hitting a whopping .354 with Washington. (16:10) The other unexpected August addition, Ildemaro Vargas, had a RBI single to tie the game in the bottom of the 8th. He also filled in admirably at shortstop on CJ Abrams' day off. (28:05) Paolo "The Secret Weapon" Espino had a solid outing where he struck out six in five frames. Why was he pulled after allowing only one run on sixty-six pitches? The Nats won 3-1 in Seattle as Ildemaro Vargas hit a 2 run HR in the top of the 9th to break the tie. Mark (from T- Mobile Park) & Al though begin with the news that Cade Cavalli will make his D.C. debut on Friday night against the Reds. This is quite possibly the most important pitching debut for the organization since Stephen Strasburg in 2010. (13:45) Anibal Sanchez and the bullpen combined to hold the Mariners offense at bay. Sanchez has been pitching decently lately and he retained his spot in the rotation over Cory Abbott; who was sent down to Rochester in order to make roster space for Cavalli. Hunter Harvey came through with a crucial strikeout out of the 'pen; is he someone worth getting excited about it for the future? (23:30) Ildemaro Vargas is turning heads this month as he has filled in admirably at 3B. He is known more for his glove than bat, but has contributed at the plate. Could he be locking up a roster spot in 2023? (33:50) The 2023 schedule was unveiled on Wednesday and it is the first of its kind as every team will play each other during the season. Most notably, there will be far fewer games against divisional foes. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The Padres are a surprising 6-9 since all their big acquisitions at the trade deadline. (05:53) Ildemaro Vargas homered for the first time with Washington and also singled later in the game. Vargas has been productive at the hot corner and seemingly has overtaken Maikel Franco as the primary 3B. (14:05) The bullpen stepped up big time as five pitchers combined for four scoreless frames. Victor Arano came through as he struck out Juan Soto in the 7th with the bases loaded. Kyle Finnegan had a bumpy ninth, but ultimately recorded the save, (23:10) Cole Henry announced he will have TOC surgery (the same as Stephen Strasburg) and his season is over. The team has only one victory so far this month as reach this midpoint of July. Juan Soto moved his hitting streak to sixteen games, but was on the on-deck circle during the final out. (17:45) Anibal Sanchez made his first Big league start since 2020 and had mixed results. He pitched well for most of his outing, but did allow a pair of 2 run HRs. Al expresses his frustration that the situation is such that the veteran is even on the active roster. Today's word of the day is ‘Open' as in open for business as in the US Open is here as in LIV vs PGA as in Phil Mickelson vs Rory McIlroy. There's so much drama in golf right now. Players vs players. Media vs players. Sportswashing is the buzz word being used. LIV Golf is what it is. The PGA Tour has always been what it is. Different rules, same reason: money. (15:10) Dehsaun Watson met the media. He said he wasn't sure if it was 66 women or fewer, but he can't talk about it. The NFL has no idea how to handle this now. 26 civil suits. Possibly 27 suits. It's all been bad news. (25:55) Review: Flag Day. (28:55) Walker Buehler is hurt. That's not good. The Los Angeles Dodgers could be in trouble here. No Buelher. No Bauer. The San Diego Padres are on their heels. The San Francisco Giants are on their heels. Fernando Tatis is still hurt, but the Padres keep winning. (34:35) So You Wanna Talk To Samson!? Someone asked me how I would handle the Eduardo Rodriguez situation with the Twins. Rodriguez was given a 5 year, $77M deal this past offseason. He pitched a few games, but now he's out with personal issues. (41:40) What about Stephen Strasburg? He signed a 7-year, $245M deal in 2019 and has pitched only 31.1 innings since then. Woof. The Nats lost 7-4 to the Marlins as Stephen Strasburg pitched for Washington for the first time in over a year. Mark (live from Miami) and Al dissect his up and down start. Do they focus more on the seven runs he allowed or the five strikeouts he threw? What to make of fastball velocity? (20:45) Nelson Cruz was a late scratch due to a stiff back and will have a MRI soon. The lineup card meanwhile puzzled Al mightily as Ehire Adrianza was placed 2nd in the order (Cesar Hernandez was given a much deserved day off). Why not move up Luis Garcia higher in the lineup? The Nats three game win streak came to a screeching halt in a 12-2 loss down in Miami. Al & Mark though do not begin with the game, but with the pregame confirmation that Stephen Strasburg will take the mound on Thursday night at the Marlins. He has not pitched for Washington since June 1st of last season. (13:06) Joan Adon was hit hard early and often as he allowed eight runs in three plus frames. His ERA is above 6.00 right as Strasburg is returning to the rotation and so it begs the question... Will Adon be sent down to the minors? Who starts on Sunday? (23:45) Luis Garcia homered on an evening that the offense did not do much against Edward Cabrera, as his tater traveled a distance of over 400 feet. What are reasonable expectations for Garcia at the plate now that he has seemingly been called up for good? Lane Thomas had two hits on Tuesday while occupying the second spot in the order and our antennas are on to see if he quietly is taking over in CF for Victor Robles. The Nats held off the Reds 5-4 to win their 3rd straight game and to take the series. Hear the explanation of how advanced scouting led to the execution of that snap throw to 1st Base, (12:04) Luis Garcia had a RBI single and swung a hot bat in Cincinnati. However, there were more question marks about his play at shortstop, mainly in the bottom of the 9th. Should he have thrown the runner out for the final out? The Nats staged a late rally against the Reds bullpen to emerge with a 10-8 win on Saturday. Al recaps the victory as Juan Soto homered twice, giving him three dingers this series. The last time Soto had a multi homer game? Last September.... also at the Great American Ballpark. (06:25) Luis Garcia had a huge day while batting in the 9th spot as he had three hits, four RBIs, including a crucial 2 run single for 9th inning insurance. Maikel Franco also had a solid day and Al addresses where his stock is at as the trade deadline is under two months away. (16:01) Erick Fedde had a second straight poor outing as he did not last five innings and allowed seven hits. His ERA a week ago was 3.55 and after the past two starts, it now sits at 4.88. Speaking of ERA, a scoreless inning by Paolo Espino puts him at 2.10.... PITCH PAOLO IN MORE HIGH LEVERAGE SPOTS! (25:47) Cade Cavalli threw a complete game for Rochester and struck out 10 in the process. It is starting to look more and more likely that he will be promoted to Washington at some point this season.
