Remembering the Legacy of Sam Kieth In this episode, we’re celebrating the life and legacy of Sam Kieth by discussing his seminal work, THE MAXX from Image Comics. We'll start with the Maxx's first appearance in the pages of the Darker Image special and then discuss the first three issues of his ongoing series. OK, so normally I would have something pithy to say about suffering through Will just picking random stuff of dubious quality that isn't available on-line and Batman '66 trades, which I just did. But what I really want to focus on are the vagaries of fate and coincidence. As you'll hear if you just start this episode, we recorded this on March 18th. And three days later, on March 21st, the news of the passing of Sam Kieth broke on-line. We have had Kieth stories in some anthologies, but Through the Lookingglass is the first story we've done that Keith was the writer of the entire thing. And sadly, none of his other Bat work is available easily on-line, so a Sam Kieth-centric episode is not in the offing currently. But I just want to say, his work will be missed by me. Whether it's his thick, hairy Wolverine, the surreality of The Maxx or his often forgotten contribution as the first artist on The Sandman, Kieth left a footprint as big as The Maxx's. RIP Sam Kieth. Comic book artist Sam Kieth passed away earlier this month as a result of Lewy Body dementia, so our Lore Watch Podcast team wanted to take an episode to talk about his impact on the genre and pop culture as a whole. Both Sam Kieth's art style and plotlines shaped comics as we moved into a more grimdark take on the old heroes. Sam's comic The Maxx put him on the map, and his collaboration with now-notorious Neil Gaiman on The Sandman clinched his place in the pantheon of early 90s comics creators. And that was just the start of his career, which included a turn writing Batman, and later included a crossover with The Maxx as one of his final projects.Because Sam Kieth's comics deal with some heavy topics, this episode comes with a content warning for topics ranging from murder and gore to dissociative identity disorder and sexual assault. While we don't linger on these topics in-depth, they are present as a part of the discussion. If you enjoy the show, please support us on Patreon, where you can get these episodes early and ad-free! FLASHBACK! Even amidst the anything-goes craziness of the early Image years, Sam Kieth's The Maxx was an outlier. While it included some superhero tropes, it wasn't really a superhero book, nor was it like much of anything else on the market, then or now. While it definitely has its weaknesses, Kumar and Dana confirm this … Continue reading #319 “The Maxx” (RIP Sam Kieth)
It’s April Fool’s Day, and that means it’s time to both discuss and pity fools, in that order! There are many foolish comic-book characters, from the deliberately silly gag heroes and villains (such as Lady Stilt-Man, the Fabulous Frog-Man, and Dracula’s progeny Hell Cow) to the accidentally absurd golden-age and silver-age characters who seem to get more bonkers with every passing day (Turner D. Century, Asbestos Lady and Madam Fatal, anyone?) And what about when comics’ fools get serious, like Michelangelo in “The Last Ronin” or Snagglepuss in “Exit Stage Left”? And let’s not forget weird licensing creations like NFL Superpro and good ol’ US-1! But first we respond to the passing of comics legend and innovator Sam Kieth, creator of The Maxx and so much more, and reflect on the impact his work had on us as fans and creators. We only really talk about Sam Kieth's passing towards the end of the episode but I think we should have probably talked about his work more off the top. I can't really understate how hard The Maxx hit when I first stumbled upon it in the early 90s. I came to Sam Kieth's work through the animated series but later when I dug into his comics (including his work on Sandman) I found myself pushed further and further down the path as an “indie comics” kid. Are Jim Mahood and Jhonen Vasquez two of my favorite artists if not for the work of Sam Kieth? Probably not. Jim Lee on Sam Kieth: “”Kieth, who was not just a big name coming off his sensational run on Marvel Comics Presents, but a friend who also loved talking about the psychological underpinnings of our favorite characters. My pitch to Sam back then was simple: come do whatever you want. Total creative freedom. Own it all. Take it wherever you want-or nowhere at all. And Sam ran with it and launched his creation ‘the Maxx’ through our anthology series Darker Image #1, promptly selling over a million copies.” We talk about plenty of other stuff too but I just wanted to give one of the greats his due. We talk about how often science fiction gets things wrong, a bunch of other celebrity deaths, the Firefly reboot, Buffy, the Arrowverse and how horror movies are getting their flowers at the Oscars. Just the usual stuff you've come to know and love about the 9to5 Entertainment System. Over on Garbage Time we immediately break our promise about Garbage Time being the more “fun” and “less depressing” of the two versions of the show. We talk about tuberculosis, cancer, people getting sick from scurvy and everyone's favorite worm: the screw-worm. Are you not intrigued? We wrap things up by talking about the viral marketing for the new Faces of Death movie and then we wax philosophical about how there are just too many dang comics being published. If you would like to show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time that would be appreciated. What happens when superhero comics get weird—like, really weird? On this episode of "Unsung Ink," we explore the world of Sam Kieth, a creator who bent anatomy, tone, and storytelling into something wholly his own. We dig into Kieth's early days in comics, from his inking work on Mage with Matt Wagner to his memorable contributions to The Sandman alongside Neil Gaiman. From there, we discuss his underrated run on Marvel Comics Presents with Peter David—work that helped define his elastic, expressive style. Of course, no conversation about Kieth is complete without diving into his creator-owned projects, including The Maxx, Zero Girl, and Four Women—books that blended psychological depth and surrealism in ways that still feel ahead of their time. Following his passing on March 15 at the age of 63, we take a moment to reflect on Sam Kieth's legacy—a true original, and a voice in comics that can't be replicated. Rest in peace.
We cover a number of topics in this Comic Talk episode starting with recent reads of Barefoot Gen, Nice House on the Lake, Sugar & Spike, Aquaman and D'Orc. This one's hitting the comic world like a Maxx-sized gut punch -- Sam Kieth, the absolute madman who created The Maxx and co-launched Sandman with Neil Gaiman using that raw, fever-dream art nobody else could copy, passed away at 63 on March 15 after a brutal fight with Lewy Body Dementia. The guy who inked Wolverine stories, painted Batman nightmares, and basically defined '90s indie weirdness for MTV cartoons and Image Comics is gone -- yeah, no more new pages from the legend whose style screamed off the page, just a wife of 43 years and a mountain of influence that'll outlive us all.Watch the podcast episodes on YouTube and all major podcast hosts including Spotify.CLOWNFISH TV is an independent, opinionated news and commentary podcast that covers Entertainment and Tech from a consumer's point of view. Sidney Davidson was the colorist on a series I got to illustrate (with writer Mark Russell) called Vanishing Point. I invited him to be a guest on the show and he suggested The Maxx, which is among the most formative comics of my experience as a reader. I couldn't wait to talk about it with him! Does it hold up? How does it read differently as an adult than as an adolescent? Did any of the other Image books reference Camille Paglia? Find out in this episode! In 2024, we published 58 Comic Book Couples Counseling episodes. However, that was not the total Comic Book Couples Counseling experience. Over on our Patreon, we published an additional 61 episodes, including our Married to Singlesseries, where we talk with comic book creators about their favorite single issues. In 2025, we'll make these a regular thing, starting with Tyler Crook this week, diving deep into his cherished Mage: The Hero Discovered #6. Crook has appeared on the podcast multiple times, mostly exploring his exceptional Dark Horse Comics series, The Lonesome Hunters (links to those episodes below). He's a passionate, enthusiastic champion of this medium, and that devotion began at a very young age thanks to books like Mage: The Hero Discovered. We enjoyed this conversation with Crook about this comic so much that we've decided to drop it into the main podcast feed to entice some of you over to the CBCC Patreon, which we consider one of the most welcoming, loving comic book communities on the internet. Published by Comico in March of 1985, Mage: The Hero Discovered #6 landed just as the industry shifted. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 arrived the year before, while Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns were just on the horizon. Comics were ready to celebrate themselves as thematically rich, adult entertainment. NOT. KIDS. STUFF. Mage: The Hero Discovered #6 was written and illustrated by Matt Wagner and features additional inks by Sam Kieth. The series follows Kevin Matchstick, who is basically a stand-in for Wagner, as he tumbles into a fantasy adventure where each obstacle represents some issue or situation from his own life. Be warned, our conversation with Tyler Crook spoils the entirety of the sixth issue, as well as some critical plot points from the rest of the series. Although, knowledge of those plot points won't ruin your overall reading experience if you decide to read after you've listened to the episode. We make the Comic Book Couples Counseling Patreon as cheap as we can. Our "Smitten Kitten" level costs only a dollar and gives you access to all the Patreon episodes. Our "Dearly Beloved" tier is $5, which grants you access to our Slack community. For the month of January, we're donating all proceeds made by our Patron to BINC (The Book Industry Charitable Foundation). They're helping all the bookstores and comic book shops affected by the LA Wildfires, and Bookshop.org matches all donations up to $10,000. Welcome to Episode #9 of the 4ever in Electric Dreams & CONFESSIONS OF A CURLY MIND co-production - Supple & Lean | A Geekcast. Presented by Imran Mirza from London, UK, and Vahé Vishapakagh Koshayan from Melbourne, Australia, the duo spend some time reconnecting with the 90s cult classic limited run series, The Maxx. Initially unveiled in 1993 by creator Sam Kieth, The Maxx was swiftly picked up by MTV for a thirteen-part series forming part of their Oddities brand in 1995. The premise focuses on a small group of characters and their interpersonal connections that impact them within the perceived real world and an alternate dimension entitled Pangea or The Outback. Vahé and Imran delve deep into the show's backstory, its incredible characters, its unmistakable 90s aesthetic and relish in what is undoubtedly a timeless piece of enthralling fiction. We're also very excited about the show's original music in support of the conversation so please listen out for another Supple & Lean original - 'The Life Of The Isz' featuring Monsignor D'Par Ted. www.4everinelectricdreams.com/ Emanating from London, UK, the 4ever in Electric Dreams website and podcast network is designed to help us celebrate the things we loved growing up and the things that continue to excite and inspire us today. With podcast episodes of the Close Encounters Minicast, 90s State of Mind and Supple & Lean, there's lots of reasons to visit us again and again, and to join us in our ongoing celebration of the things we can't leave behind.

In the third installment of our ‘5 Comics That Explain' series, we G-ride to the 1990s. The conversation includes Spawn #1 and the meteoric rise of Image Comics, the death (and inevitable return) of Superman in issue #75 and the ‘Bad Girl' craze led by scantily-clad characters such as Lady Death and Shi. We also cover the landmark mini-series DC's ‘Kingdom Come' with the sterling art of Alex Ross; as well as give the nod to Neil Gaiman's ‘Sandman' and becoming the bedrock of DC's late imprint, Vertigo. Lastly, we give honorable mention to the 8 million selling ‘X-Men' #1 by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee, the reality-bending ‘Maxx' by Sam Kieth and the breath of diversity from Milestone Comics. As always, thanks for listening.
This week, Stephen and Lace discuss the MTV animated series The Maxx, based on the Image comic of the same name created by Sam Kieth. For two years, we've discussed The Sandman on our Patreon, one episode at a time, one issue at a time. Periodically, we've dropped certain conversations into the main Comic Book Couples Counseling podcast feed, but it's been a while. Since we're nearly reaching the end of Neil Gaiman's original 75-issue run, we felt compelled to pull a Patreon conversation to all our wonderful listeners' attention. Our "Sleepwalking Through Sandman" Patreon series is an extremely vulnerable experience for us. Lisa read these comics in college, but her memory is foggy and mutated by time. For whatever reason, Brad never read The Sandman when it was initially on comic shop stands. Now, every week, we stumble through this iconic comic book series, desperately trying to absorb what Gaiman and his astonishing collaborators put down on the page. Frequently, we interpret things way off base, but thankfully, our Patrons guide us along and clue us into what we're missing. The result is episodes unlike any other shows Comic Book Couples Counseling produces. We're pretty darn proud of them. The Sandman #70 is the beginning of the end. Is it an epilogue, or is it the climax? Panel by panel, we debate the possibilities as we approach the original Sandman's final issues. A small select group gathers within the Dreaming to pay their last respects to Morpheus while a new (?) Dream works on rebuilding what was lost during the battle with the Furies. For as little as $1 a month (or $12 a year), you can access all our Sandman episodes and hundreds of other bonus podcasts. After finishing our Sandman #70 conversation, you can jump right on into our Sandman #71 conversation, already posted in our Patreon feed HERE. In this episode, we also announce a new Patreon podcast series. It's a show concept we don't see anywhere else online, and we think our listeners will be excited about it. Stay tuned for more information, and join up before San Diego Comic-Con if you want access to that particular comic book party. Sandman #71 was published by DC Comics with a cover date of August 1995. It's written by Neil Gaiman, illustrated by Michael Zulli, colored by Daniel Vozzo, seps by Digital Chameleon, lettered by Todd Klein, edited by Karen Berger, associated by Shelly Roeberg, and features a cover by Dave McKean. Sandman created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth, and Mike Dringenberg. Chris, John and Derek are all here to chat about the bonus episodes of The Sandman, Chapter 11 "Dream of A Thousand Cats and Calliope" in our final Sandman Podcast. The Sandman Chapter 11 "Dream of A Thousand Cats and Calliope" Details Directed by Hisko Hulsing (segment "Dream of a Thousand Cats") Louise Hooper (segment "Calliope") Teleplay for both episodes written by Catherine Smyth-McMullen Staff Writers Catherine Smyth-McMullen and Vanessa Benton Dream of a Thousand Cats Synopsis. At night, a Siamese cat holds a gathering of other cats at the local graveyard to tell her hope for cats, her experiences and the story about her encounter with Morpheus in the Dreaming. A long time ago, she met a tomcat with whom she gave birth to a litter of mixed-breed kittens. This displeased her owners, who took the kittens and threw them into a river, traumatising the Siamese cat. In desperation, the cat dreamed to get answers for this cruel act and revelation of what to do as she meets Morpheus, in the form of a black cat, and begging him for a solution. Morpheus presented her with a parallel universe in which cats were the dominant species over humans until the humans fought back by dreaming, re-creating reality and turning their masters into the cats that mankind sees them as today. Upon finishing her story, the Siamese cat urges the other cats to perform the same enlightenment so that they may reclaim their status as the rulers of the earth. Calliope Synopsis. Struggling author Richard Madoc visits Erasmus Fry, an elderly former writer who has imprisoned a Greek muse named Calliope in his house. Fry transfers ownership of Calliope to Madoc, in exchange for a trichino bezoar. Back at Madoc's home he discovers that violence is more efficient to receive the Muse's inspiration. Despite his promises to release her after the publication of his sequel to his best-selling debut novel, he abuses her more than once, until it becomes obvious he never intends to let her go. Calliope sends a desperate plea to the Fates who are unable to act before turning to Morpheus, her former husband, whom she has not seen since the tragic death of their son Orpheus. Upon receiving her plea and learning what has happened to her, Morpheus becomes enraged and confronts Madoc. When he refuses to release Calliope, Morpheus punishes Madoc with an uncontrollable stream of ideas. Madoc soon frees Calliope, who asks Morpheus to lift his curse from Madoc. Morpheus does so, but Madoc finds himself unable to remember Calliope, Morpheus, or any of his ideas. Calliope vows to make sure that what happened to her doesn't happen to her sister Muses. She and Morpheus share a tender goodbye as she expresses the hope that sometime in the future, she can visit him in his realm and they'll be able to grieve their son properly. We reach the end of the season as we discuss The Sandman Chapter 10 "Lost Hearts" in spoiler filled detail. We will be back covering the 11th special episode on our Sandman next podcast. The Sandman Chapter 10 "Lost Hearts" Details Episode Directed by Louise Hooper Teleplay for this episode written by Jay Franklin Staff Writers Catherine Smyth-McMullen and Vanessa Benton The Corinthian warns Rose that Morpheus plans to kill her to protect the boundaries between the Dreaming and the waking world and manages to persuade her and Jed to stay in his Hotel room as he heads down for his keynote speech at the Cereal Convention. But as the Corinthian places the collectors into his collective dream he is interrupted by Morpheus, but the Corinthian shows Morpheus that Rose's increasing power and the weakening of the boundaries of the Dreaming enables him to defend himself against his creator. In the meantime Rose and Jed have fallen asleep which allows Morpheus to inform Rose of the great danger she poses to the waking world, prompting her to temporarily restore the Dreaming and allowing Morpheus to unmake the Corinthian. Morpheus punishes the convention attendees with clarity about their crimes, allowing Rose and Jed to leave the Hotel unharmed. Until she falls asleep again. That night, Rose confronts Morpheus in the Dreaming and is ready to sacrifice herself to save her friends and brother, but they are joined by Unity Kincade and Lucienne. They inform Morpheus it was Unity who should have been this era's Vortex and Unity convinces Rose to transfer the Vortex into her, allowing her to sacrifice her life for Rose's. Morpheus realises that Unity's golden eyed man who impregnated her while she was with sleeping sickness was Desire, who planned to pass the Vortex to her descendant in an attempt to have Morpheus spill family blood. Morpheus confronts Desire, warning them and Despair against further scheming. Back in the dream realm Morpheus remakes Gault as a good dream and endeavours to act as a more benevolent ruler of the Dreaming, leaving Lucienne to take care of his affairs while he creates. In the waking world, Lyta with her newborn son, moves with Rose, Jed, and Hal back to New Jersey. In Hell, after being reproached by Lord Azazel and the Dukes of Hell, Lucifer Morningstar ponders a new plan that will really anger God and wreak revenge upon Lord Morpheus. With the recent Sandman trailer drop, the world seems re-energized regarding all things Dream King. We are here for it. In fact, we've been reading Neil Gaiman's epic series one issue at a time/one week at a time for more than a year now and recording our thoughts through our Patreon feed. Our Sleepwalking Through Sandman episodes are some of our favorite conversations that we've had in the Love Nest, made all the better by our Patrons providing context and history every week. When we initially launched the show, we plopped the first episode into our main feed, and we thought it was time to give our regular audience another preview. This Sandman #17 episode was initially recorded several months ago, but we think it's one of our best Sandman conversations. We hope you agree with us. As first-time Sandman readers, we're deeply fascinated with Morpheus' romantic relationships. You'll hear how we're struggling to comprehend his behavior toward Nada, and how this deep dive into his relationship with Calliope re-contextualizes the Dream King's actions. We hope you enjoy this chat. Longtime CBCC listeners may have some inkling of what we sound like when we're in full-sweatpants mode, but newcomers could be a little shocked. We can get real dang silly, friends. Enjoy! And please let us know what you think of this podcast series. Sandman #17 was published by DC Comics with a cover date of July 1990. It's written by Neil Gaiman, illustrated by Kelley Jones & Malcolm Jones III, lettered by Todd Klein, colored by Robbie Busch(Original) and Daniel Vozzo (Re-Color), assistant edited by Tom Peyer, edited by Karen Berger, and features a cover by Dave McKean.
