New York Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman has been with the team since the 1990s, and for Wednesday's edition of Locked On Yankees, Stacey and Steve looked at the last ten years of Yankees' trades, transactions, and drafts to evaluate Cashman's performance. They look at draft classes, who the Yankees' picked, who they passed on, and what trades some of the prospects have been part of. They also look at some good trades, bad trades, good signings, and bad signings. They start back in late 2013 with Jacoby Ellsbury signing for the 2014 season and finish off in 2023, going through what went wrong first, then what went right, and they give their overall grades for the past ten years of Cashman moves. There will be some familiar names and some that make you scratch your head. Is it a fun trip down memory lane? Yes and no. PASSED BALL SHOW #109 12/4/2013 Part 1 WITH FRED VALENTINE; I open up by recapping the Jacoby Ellsbury signing as well as the trades the Oakland Athletics made. I mention the Red Sox signing of AJ Pierzynski and how I like the Rays decision to trade for RHP Heath Bell. I show my doubts over whether the Mets will close the deal on OF Curtis Granderson. I then speak with former Orioles and Senators OF Fred Valentine about his playing career, playing in the minors in segregated areas in the south and how he started the MLBP Ulumni Association
Bryan and Dan are back and in a more festive mood than they were for last week's Xander Bogaerts sadness-fest. They cover: • The Jacoby Ellsbury deer story (obviously a top priority) • Should John Henry sell the team? • Christmas gifts for Red Sox employees and players. • Bryan's mortal enemy of the week! • Recommendations, during which Dan expresses some disgusting anti-seltzer views. And so, so much more. It's a long one, folks! Dig in. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Welcome back to the Over the Monster podcast? Bryan and Dan start off with some inane chit-chat about Jacoby Ellsbury before getting into the Peter Gammons tweet that may spell doom for Xander Bogaerts's time in Boston. We get into some other minor moves -- Narciso Crook season! -- before Bryan throws out some sad, sad potential Chaim Bloom moves before talking smack about his downstairs neighbor. Dan then lectures new U.S. soccer fans and Bryan extols his dog. It's December, baby! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
The Red Sox finally made a move this offseason and signed Joelyz Rodríguez. The Red Sox promised that they were going to spend this offseason and boy did they ever. Many people are saying this is the piece that will put them over the hump in the bullpen and make this club a championship caliber team. Jared tries to think of a Mets fan he can call to get the rundown on the Z man but he comes up short. This leads to the realization that we don't have a trustworthy Red Sox beat writer on our side after Cotillo doesn't answer Jared's call for the 10th straight episode. The application for the Name Redacted Podcast official beat writer is now open effective immediately. Pete joins the show and tries to blame his tardiness on Jake, so we go to the group chat texts to break down what happened. Jared and Tyler get in a debate about who was more deserving of the 2007 World Series MVP: Mike Lowell or Jacoby Ellsbury. It wouldn't be an offseason episode if we didn't touch on some Xander and Raffy talk, so we do exactly that. We also go through Tyler's old tweets to Jared. Enjoy! C-Block (28:53) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL. It is 59 years since the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and I may be the youngest person you know with a distinct memory of that terrible day and the days that followed. The Red Sox lost the last game of that Angels series, but we have multiple reasons why that shouldn't actually count as a loss. Today we talk the end of Sunday's game being bogus, break down the vibe of Fenway right now as it slowly comes back to normal, the wild way we will prevent Michael Chavis from swinging at high fastballs, the date for our live show at Kowloon, Mike Trout being insanely overrated, if you would rather have Trout or Ohtani on this Sox team right now, how badly they need a camera that shows you if a ball is fair or foul down the right field line at Fenway, time zones being bananas, Yankees Suck chants needing some tweaking, who in this rotation we trust the least right now, Matt Andriese being in danger of losing his nickname, a Jacoby Ellsbury debate and of course the schedule lookahead for this Blue Jays series this week. That and much more. Enjoy!

While there is some Yankees news, such as the likelihood of Jacoby Ellsbury starting the season on the disabled list because an oblique injury and the flu have kept him from getting enough at-bats in Florida, and Luis Severino getting the ball in Toronto next Thursday, this show is about more. We're ready to really get going on the Locked On Yankees website, where one of the guests on this episode, Anthony L. Fisher, has one of the first pieces, along with stuff to read from Britt Huber and Miranda Kalish.Meanwhile, we've filled out the hosting rotation for the podcast, and Gary Phillips is here to say hello to the Locked On Yankees audience for the first time. Gerrit Cole is an Astro, Andrew McCutchen is a Giant, and both of those things are negative for the Yankees for different reasons. The Yankees, though, should be on the phone to Pittsburgh to see if the Pirates still are in a dealing mood, and if so, what it would take to get Josh Harrison to New York.Meanwhile, the Yu Darvish derby continues, and the Yankees have the room under the luxury tax threshold to make it happen, maybe, although they still ideally would find a way to dump a contract somewhere else... again, Jacoby Ellsbury is the top candidate for that, but again, good luck finding a taker. How many more weeks of this wait-and-see game?Apparently lots, because as we look around the rest of the AL East, the biggest thing happening is that Curtis Granderson will play his age-37 season with Toronto. Also, my knee really does hurt, and it's been almost a month since I first banged it on the ground. Should I see a doctor? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Gerrit Cole, still not a Yankee. Yu Darvish, maybe a Yankee? Brian Cashman was on the radio talking about the top pitcher on this winter's free agent market (sorry, Jake Arrieta, but it's true), and now it's dare-to-dream time in Bomberland. Or is it? Cashman is under no obligation to play it totally straight with his public comments -- and really, he shouldn't, because everyone else in baseball can listen to the radio, too. Still, it's fun to think about the possibility of Darvish in pinstripes... if the Yankees can clear the space under the luxury tax threshold to make it work. Can they trade Jacoby Ellsbury? Somebody else? Do they even necessarily have to get under that $197 million figure? There are a lot of questions there, and then there are even more questions in the latter part of this episode because it's Mailbag Friday... which features more talk about Darvish, Ellsbury, the luxury tax... and pro wrestling.Subscribe to Locked On Yankees on iTunes, Stitcher, or wherever you get your podcasts, and feel free to tweet to @LockedOnYankees, or email LockedOnNYY@gmail.com, if you're not finding the show where you want to find it. This episode is posting at a time when trade talks between the Yankees and Pirates for Gerrit Cole - and maybe Josh Harrison - are reportedly in progress, and who knows how close anything is to being finalized? So, when you listen to this, maybe Cole is a Yankee, maybe he isn't. You'll know, because you're on the internet, but the points talked about here should apply regardless of the status of the deal. We're learning just how much the Yankees value Estevan Florial. It's also coming into focus just how easily the Yankees can deal from strength in their farm system, when there's basically cover for top prospects at the major positions. Like, you can trade Clint Frazier because Florial is in the system and the major league outfield picture features two guys who just hit 50 homers.Meanwhile, Jacoby Ellsbury inches ever so slightly closer to the exit, even if there's no reason to expect anything to happen with him anytime soon. At least there's now a potential taker, at some point, if their other options are exhausted, maybe. But that's still a flicker above nobody at all wanting any piece of that contract.Ellsbury kicks off Mailbag Friday, which also features questions about Mets ownership, Yankees dingers, and the infield situation.Remember to follow @LockedOnYankees on Twitter! Jacoby Ellsbury isn't going anywhere and Manny Machado isn't coming to the Bronx, at least not right now. The swiftness of the Giancarlo Stanton trade may have warped our minds as to how quickly things happen, but on the whole, this is a slow baseball offseason, and there are many waiting games that the Yankees have to play as they go about the rest of their winter business. While the winter meetings ended quietly after a rousing start, there was some news at the conclusion, with the Yankees losing four players in the Rule 5 draft. Craig Goldstein from Baseball Prospectus joins the show for the Farm Report, taking a look at what was lost but might return, as well as the expectations for Gleyber Torres and Miguel Andujar, plus analysis of Clint Frazier's situation.Plus, it's the debut of the Friday Mailbag, with questions about the Yankees' third base situation and needs in the starting rotation, as well as a fun thought exercise about players out of position.Remember to follow @LockedOnYankees on Twitter, and watch out for the next episode coming on Monday!
