Williams said she does not like the word retirement and prefers to think of this stage of her life as “evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me.” Williams is playing this week in Toronto, at a hard-court tournament that leads into the U.S. Open. The year’s last Grand Slam event begins in New York on Aug. 29. Tennis – Serena Williams’ legacy involves plenty of wins, plenty else Serena Williams is famous for her 23 Grand Slam singles titles. That is more than any other tennis player accumulated in the sport’s professional era. But mere numbers can’t capture everything Williams has represented during a distinguished career that began when she was a teenager in the 1990s and is remarkable for not just the successes but also the longevity, including a record 10 major championships after turning 30. What Williams has done without a racket in her hand is also rather noteworthy, whether it was her off-court interests or her stands on key issues in tennis and society at large. Two people familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press that the Big Ten was looking for a seven-year deal worth $380 million per year from ESPN, and the network declined. The people spoke to The AP on condition of anonymity because the negotiations were not being made public. Sports Business Journal first reported that ESPN was out of the Big Ten negotiations and CBS and NBC were likely to land pieces of the conference’s rights. ESPN has held television rights for the Big Ten since the mid-1980s. The network has shared Big Ten rights with Fox in the latest contract. Fox will remain the primary rights holder. Smith doesn’t have an agent. General manager Ryan Poles says he will not honor the request and will try to negotiate a deal with him. The Nats lost 6-3 at the Cubs for their sixth consecutive defeat. Al begins by pointing out to Mark that a bright spot emerged on Monday in the new prospects rankings by Baseball America. Washington has five of the top 55 prospects, with four ranked ahead of Cade Cavalli (C.J. Abrams the highest at #11). (07:30) An emailer asks if Cade Cavalli remaining in AAA has anything to do with MLB service time stipulations. Is it more baseball reasons or service time reasons? (12:40) Two Natonals went deep at Wrigley Field, Luke Voit & Joey Meneses. We are looking to come up with a nickname for Meneses; after he spent the past decade toiling in the Minors. Email us at natschatpodcast@gmail.com (19:05) Anibal Sanchez had a decent outing until it fell apart in the sixth inning. He has allowed a staggering amount of homers this season and his ERA is above 7.00. This leads to a familiar discussion about how poor the starting pitching has been as of late, (27:50) Maikel Franco made a big time mental mistake as the Cubs executed a double steal without a pitch being thrown. Mark explains what occurred on the bizarre play in the 7th inning. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
The Nats came back on the Pirates 3-2 as Maikel Franco hit a game winning 2 run HR in the bottom of the 8th. Al discusses how they struggled with runners in scoring position all night until Franco came through late as the Nats have now won five of their past seven games. The boys ultimately stranded ten runners on base in the victory. (11:20) Erick Fedde allowed two runs in five frames, keeping the team in it despite exiting with a 2-0 deficit. It goes down as a quality start, which the staff has recorded in seven of the past eight games. The bullpen stepped up with four scoreless innings, including the notable decision to pitch Kyle Finnegan in the bottom of the 9th as opposed to Tanner Rainey. (23:10) Davey Martinez was named to the coaching staff for next month's All Star Game. This seems like a gesture from Atlanta's Brian Snitker to recognize Martinez for having missed the opportunity to manage the 2020 affair. Learn more about your ad choices. The Nats staged a late rally against the Reds bullpen to emerge with a 10-8 win on Saturday. Al recaps the victory as Juan Soto homered twice, giving him three dingers this series. The last time Soto had a multi homer game? Last September.... also at the Great American Ballpark. (06:25) Luis Garcia had a huge day while batting in the 9th spot as he had three hits, four RBIs, including a crucial 2 run single for 9th inning insurance. Maikel Franco also had a solid day and Al addresses where his stock is at as the trade deadline is under two months away. (16:01) Erick Fedde had a second straight poor outing as he did not last five innings and allowed seven hits. His ERA a week ago was 3.55 and after the past two starts, it now sits at 4.88. Speaking of ERA, a scoreless inning by Paolo Espino puts him at 2.10.... PITCH PAOLO IN MORE HIGH LEVERAGE SPOTS! (25:47) Cade Cavalli threw a complete game for Rochester and struck out 10 in the process. It is starting to look more and more likely that he will be promoted to Washington at some point this season. Al concludes by relaying the news that Stephen Strasburg was given a locker in Cincinnati, a good sign that he will be joining the rotation soon. Learn more about your ad choices. The Nats ended their 8 game losing streak in emphatic fashion as they crushed the Giants 14-4 to open their road trip. Al & Mark (Live from San Francisco) convened at 3:11 AM Eastern to discuss just exactly how the offense busted out in such a big way with 22 hits. (06:31) Juan Soto began the evening with a 1st inning HR, but then a mini controversy developed in his next at-bat. His request for a timeout was not granted as Alex Wood was quick pitching and it resulted in a visibly upset Soto. Mark explains the sequence of events that unfolded. (12:06) Victor Robles was part of a trio of Nationals to record four hits on Friday night. Josh Bell and Maikel Franco were the two others as Cesar Hernandez was not too far behind with three hits of his own. (17:55) Keibert Ruiz did not join the hit parade as he was 0 for 6 from the plate. We discuss the young catcher's offensive struggles and what his workload is like so far this season. In between, four other relievers took the mound to preserve the comfortable victory. The Nats lost to Miami 2-1 for a 7th consecutive defeat. Al & Mark recap an evening that didn't see much action until late as the offense mightily struggled for yet another game. During this losing streak, they are averaging just a pair of runs per game. (08:40) Maikel Franco thought he hit a game tying HR in the 9th, but instead ended up with just a single because he jogged down the line as the ball caromed off the wall. The hosts respond to this mental error in the final frame. (14:55) Erick Fedde was tagged with a loss despite a decent start. However, he did not make it through five innings and it leads to a discussion on what the future holds for him in the rotation. (20:41) Patrick Corbin will indeed stay in the rotation and will start Thursday afternoon vs. Miami. Mark contextualizes what is at stake for Corbin in this next outing. The Nats had their most frustrating loss of the season as they coughed up a 3-0 lead and lost 5-3 in the series finale in Pittsburgh. Al & Mark (Live from PNC Park) recap Sunday afternoon's game as Patrick Corbin made it through 5 innings, but the Pirates rallied against him and the bullpen in the 6th & 7th. Steve Cishek was tagged with the loss by allowing 3 runs, and it calls into question whether or not Sean Doolittle should have entered the game before the right hander did. (13:07) Maikel Franco committed three errors and came very close to having a fourth. However, he also had a web-gem on the afternoon. The hosts discuss the veteran infield that has shown many defensive flaws so far this April.(25:01) The Nats return home this week, but the weather forecast is not looking promising. Might the team get a much needed day off?
The Nats won the rubber match in Atlanta 3-1 for their third victory in the past four days. Mark (live from Truist Park) and Al open the discussion with praise for Josiah Gray, who tossed five scoreless innings. What was working for Gray in the outing?(10:46) The top bullpen arms then stepped up for the final twelve outs to give Gray his first W of the season (Finnegan, Doolittle, Cishek , and Rainey). Do the Nationals actually have themselves a solid back-end of the 'pen?(17:24) The offense jumped out on Max Fried with two runs for a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Maikel Franco had two more hits and Josh Bell extended his hitting streak to seven games. However, Alcides Escobar has already struck out nine times, which makes us wonder if the team might soon explore other options at SS.(28:33) We read a listener submitted email about Patrick Corbin and any potential fixes Jim Hickey can provide?
