This week on Wrestling Omakase we talk two early 10s Shinsuke Nakamura matches, a 2016 DDT mat classic, an Aztec Warfare match and maybe the last good ladder match of all time. If you haven't listened to a 5 Matches episode yet, every week John and the guest each choose 2 matches to watch and talk about on the episode. Then we each choose a third match, which is put up to a vote on the @wrestleomakase Twitter account, letting the listeners choose our fifth and final match of the week. It's a fun retro format featuring all sorts of different wrestling! John is joined by Joel Abraham (@joeljabraham) of VOW's New Japan Pro Wrestling podcast the Super J-Cast (@thesuperjcast), and though we do talk some NJPW we also give Joel a chance to spread his wings a bit. Here's the full list of five matches that are discussed this week, along with the easiest place to find them: 1. Chris Jericho vs. Chris Benoit, WWE 1/21/01 (WWE Network: https://watch.wwe.com/episode/Royal-Rumble-2001-11802, match starts at 22:51) 2. Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Hirooki Goto, NJPW 4/4/10 (NJPW World: https://njpwworld.com/p/s_series_00300_1_1 or https://njpwworld.com/p/s_series_00300_2_01) 3. Tetsuya Naito vs. Shinsuke Nakamura, NJPW 8/14/11 (NJPW World: https://njpwworld.com/p/s_series_00183_2_5) Topics that come up along the way include: a review of the Hi-Score Girl anime John recommended to Joel and some character discussion, Joel's starting point in wrestling fandom, spots that should absolutely never be done again, when exactly Goto started getting viewed as a geek (and many different ways he was done dirty by the booking), dropping into Lucha Underground and trying to make sense of it all, matches that build internally being better than just endless references to past matches, Stardust Genius Naito was Good Actually, what a Nakamura return to NJPW run might look like and whether or not he could actually pull it off, yet another "Nakamura-Zayn is just Nakamura-Ibushi reskinned" discussion, and much more. We begin tonight going over the Pro Wrestling NOAH Junior Battle of Glory Finals show for Korakuen Hall.  This is the first show after the purchase by Cyber Agent, as well as it's first show on the DDT Universe streaming network.  We also talk about the four Title matches that were set up this show as well with Shiozaki vs Fujita, Sugiura vs Kiyomiya, Ogawa vs Harada and Stinger vs RATELS. We also discuss the first two New Beginning shows from New Japan as we mash up the two shows and talk what we liked.  Also, Ryan has something to say about the main event from night two.  We also preview the big close of the tour as they have sold out Osaka Jo Hall for the big Tetsuya Naito vs KENTA match.   WWE had their Quarter 4 Earnings call and it was a interesting one to say the least.  Ryan took part in it and has some interesting thoughts just from the cadence from Vince on his answers.  We talk the Network discussion from it, along with some outside thoughts as to what's next. The guys also each gave one another three companies to make a 8 match super show with.  Each will give out their card and reactions to some of the fun dream matches to be had. This week on Wrestling Omakase it's finally time to head back to New Japan land! John is joined by returning guests and VOW contributors Chris Samsa (TheChrisSamsa) and Thomas Fischbeck (@rasslinratings) to break down the two big New Beginning in Sapporo shows in detail, as they go match-by-match on both cards. Hear praise for a number of the undercard matches (except one in particular that gets ripped by pretty much everyone; you'll have to listen to find out which one) and then some strong opinions on the major matches of both shows: EVIL-Ishii, Shingo-Goto, ZSJ-Ospreay and Okada-Taichi. We then do a brief preview of the upcoming New Beginning shows from Korakuen Hall and Osaka and speculate on what could be coming later in the year in NJPW as well. Once that's wrapped up we turn our attention to the big story from Japanese wrestling this past week: the sale of Pro Wrestling NOAH to DDT's parent company CyberAgent. Hear us give some thoughts on why the sale might have gone down and how Japanese wrestling is consolidating with the specter of NXT Japan looming large. We then briefly discuss NOAH's latest Korakuen show (and first airing on DDT Universe) from 1/30 and look ahead to their major shows in February as well, plus as a bonus we take a look at the Big Japan Strong Climb lineup that was recently announced. We then do a brief preview of the upcoming New Beginning shows from Korakuen Hall and Osaka and speculate on what could be coming later in the year in NJPW as well.Once that's wrapped up we turn our attention to the big story from Japanese wrestling this past week: the sale of Pro Wrestling NOAH to DDT's parent company CyberAgent. It's a jam-packed episode of Japanese wrestling, this week!Support Wrestling Omakase with a donation through Red Circle! All donations are split with that week's guests.
