Today we have on a super special guest, The Doodler! This is another on our technical series about art making and this time we're talking about lighting. Tantz suggested we interview The Doodler for this because she's Tantz's go-to person for lighting issues in scenes. It was great to chat with The Doodler about her lighting techniques and the different challenges presented by different scenes. The Doodler was much better at explaining the concepts than I could have been so it was a pleasure to have her on the cast! You might know the Doodler for her long running comic The Second Crimean war, about an alternate history of the Russian takeover of the Crimean region after the breakup of the Soviet Union in the 90s- this comic was created in 2010, before the modern takeover of Crimea in 2014. It's a popular and well drawn comic with top level artwork. It's mostly black and white with some limited use of colour. It's over 800 pages so it's a sizable chunk of comic to get into and I highly recommend it! Lighting is the most fundamental thing there is to visual art because it allows all things to be seen: a radiating body sheds light rays in straight lines around itself and these are absorbed or reflected off the objects they hit, in turn we see those objects because of the photons that are reflected into our eyes… It's MUCH more complex than that though. As comic artists we usually do things backwards: we draw line art, which would mean the default is that EVERYTHING is fully lit and visible, then we work out where the light comes from and what's in shadow. The simplest way to handle lighting in a comic is just to draw stuff as if there ware spotlights illuminating it all from the viewer perspective, like a stage play or TV sitcom- no shadows, full lighting. A more advanced, realistic approach suggested by The Doodler is to treat the image like a 3D space and work out where the light comes from (the sun, a flashlight, an overhead light etc), then ray trace from that point to work out what's in shadow and what's lit up. Listen to the interview to get a much better discussion on it than what I can write here! Gunwallace wasn't able to give us a theme this week so we're replaying his theme to The Second Crimean war - Heavy, grey winter skies, pregnant with snow and sadness. Cold snaps the brittle air, crystal daggers hang in the forest, a whistling breeze sings of desolation and loneliness. A thaw will be long in coming to this blighted world of war and suffering… Synth violins and cellos set the scene beautifully, touches of quiet bass and piano round out the landscape of the Second Crimean war. Aaron Leigh is the guest on the show today. Aaron teaches all of us a valuable lesson on this show and that is to make sure you make the most out of every opportunity because you never know what door it may open. Aaron is the current bass player in Y & T, he has great solo work, and also plays in Frank Hannon's solo band when he is not on the road with Tesla.Aaron's Website: Click HereGet Signed Vinyl: Click HereCheck out Aaron on Spotify: Click HereAaron's bio:Born and raised in San Jose, California, Aaron Leigh's musical journey began at the age of 5 when his Grandmother gave him drumsticks and a practice pad, introducing him to the mesmerizing performance of Buddy Rich on the Mike Douglas Show. Inspired by the rhythmic beats, Aaron quickly embraced the drums and started playing. At the age of 10, Aaron's path took a rock 'n' roll turn when he discovered KISS, igniting a deep passion within him. Determined to become a lifelong musician, he picked up the guitar and immersed himself in the world of rock. As Aaron continued to explore the realm of music, he encountered influential bands such as RUSH and IRON MAIDEN.At the age of 14, he found his calling in the bass guitar and began honing his skills. It was during this time that he stumbled upon a band called Y&T. Drawn in by their captivating cover art, he purchased their album "Black Tiger" without even hearing a single note. When he finally dropped the needle on the record, Y&T's music resonated with him like no other, instantly becoming his favorite band.In a remarkable twist of fate, Aaron Leigh joined Y&T as their bass player in April of 2016, fulfilling a lifelong dream. Reflecting on this incredible opportunity, Aaron humbly acknowledges, "Being a lifelong fan of Y&T and then ending up as the bass player in one of my ALL-TIME FAVORITE bands is an incredible blessing... I'm VERY lucky."While thriving as a member of Y&T, Aaron Leigh's creative spirit extends beyond the band. He is also a solo artist, songwriter, recording engineer, and producer. On March 4th, 2021, he released his first solo EP, featuring tracks like "INSANITY," "TELL ME," "JEWEL EYED JUDY," and "DON'T SAY GOODBYE." The EP's first single, "Insanity," showcased the talents of Frank Hannon, co-founder and lead guitarist of the platinum-selling band TESLA, who contributed incredible solos that added another layer of melodic beauty to the song.Noted radio personalities have praised Aaron's solo work, with Eddie Trunk of Trunk Nation/Sirius/XM Radio commenting, "Aaron's done a great job playing bass in one of my favorite bands Y&T. But his new solo single shows he has a lot to offer as a solo artist as well. 'INSANITY' is a great melodic rocker!" Continuing to tour the world with Y&T, Aaron Leigh is on the verge of releasing his sixth solo single.Once again, Aaron immersed himself in the creative realm as he is about to unveil his latest solo endeavor. "Bahia Sunshine" is set to captivate audiences worldwide on July 28th, 2023.

Today, we're joined by New Japan veteran Rocky Romero to discuss the upcoming Forbidden Door pay-per-view in Toronto, a collaboration between New Japan Pro Wrestling and All Elite Wrestling. We discuss how a card like that comes together and how difficult is to plan, as well as break down the two dream matches. Rocky also touches on other parts of his career, including his run under the Black Tiger mask and his buzzworthy feud recently with Volador Jr. in Mexico's CMLL, the oldest pro wrestling company in the world.

Formed in the early 1970's in California, Y&T is a melodic rock band that is always considered one of the most underrated bands in rock. Led by charismatic singer and lead guitarist, Dave Meniketti, Y&T has always been at the cusp of hitting the big time. Black Tiger is Y&T's 4th studio album. The album was produced by Max Norman of the Ozzy Osbourne, "Blizzard Of Ozz" fame. The album featured melodic hooks, fun lyrics and blistering guitar solos. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 31 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. Well, it was only a matter of time. After swerving Back In Black for 162 albums, the hand of fate intervened as the Tico Torres Tombola of Topics and Themes spat out the ball that correlated to a theme simply called "Black". With most of hard rock and heavy metal's behemoths already admitted to the Enter Sadmen Hall of Fame only four albums have occupied the #1 slot in the list - Priest's British Steel, reviewed in Episode 1, spent a week there before being toppled following Episode 2 by Moving Pictures from Rush, which itself occupied the slot for just a week before it was casually usurped by Zeppelin's IV. For 39 weeks it seemed that no matter what the boys threw at it, Page, Plant, Bonham and Jones were never going to be overtaken. And then the unstoppable force of IV met the immovable object of Ride The Lightning in Episode 42 and it all changed. But, faithful followers, we all knew that somewhere round the corner lurked a grown man in a school uniform brandishing a Gibson SG, four of his mates and the blackest of all the Black albums. Joining the 31 million seller on the show were two albums that, even in such austere company, would have every right to expect to be challenging for a place in the Top 10. Both released in 1982, the episode rounds out with the Scorpions' Blackout and Y&T's Black Tiger - two albums that in the hands of most other bands might reasonably be considered the undisputed high watermarks. But the boys tackle both juggernauts knowing that their predecessors, Lovedrive and Earthshaker respectively, cast long shadows ...

This week, we are absolutely pumped to talk to the amazing Rocky Romero. Rocky is a NJPW star and 1/3 of the self-proclaimed “Worst Podcast In The World” - Talk'n Shop - along with Doc Gallows and Karl Anderson. Rocky has wrestled for over two decades, debuting back in 1997 after being trained by Antonio Inoki at the NJPW Dojo in Los Angeles. Rocky's career has taken him through promotions in Southern California, Mexico, and most notably, NJPW and Ring Of Honor. In NJPW, Rocky worked under the hood as the fourth incarnation of Black Tiger, eventually defeating Tiger Mask for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship. He's a former three-time ROH World Tag Team Champion and a record eight-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champion. When he's not wrestling, Rocky stays busy by keeping Anderson and Gallows from going off the rails on their popular podcast and winning the Talk 'N Shop A Mania 24/7 Championship and Lucha Death Matches. In this episode, we talk to Rocky about living in a world that suddenly maskless again, how NJPW was always his ultimate goal, the differences between working in Japan and the United States, the success of the podcast and the family created on Zoom calls during the pandemic, and their upcoming live show at Jimmy's Famous Seafood on Sunday, June 13th. Ladies and gentlemen, entering the podcast, hailing originally from Havana, Cuba, this is Rocky Romero. ***Support for Not About Wrestling is brought to you by MANSCAPED.
