Is Britain Corrupt (Part 2) The Black Spy Podcast, Season 18, Episode 0009 This week's Black Spy Podcast asks the question: Is Britain, and indeed the West, corrupt? During part two of this fascinating discussion, Carlton King and Dr. Rachel Taylor suggest that what is all important is the definition and perception of what corruption is. The Black Spy Podcast team argue that corruption involves the abuse of power for personal gain, encompassing both overt acts, such as bribery, and more subtle forms, such as cronyism or undue influence. So, although there are, in Britain and in many Western nations, robust legal frameworks, independent judiciaries, and a semblance of a free media, supposedly contributing to transparency and accountability, it can not be taken for granted that these measures work. Hence, although the UK has bodies like the the National Audit Office and parliamentary committees tasked with scrutinizing public spending and governance questions, the issue remains live. Western countries often rank relatively high on indices like Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index, reflecting lower levels of perceived corruption compared to many other regions. But is this correct? Criticisms of corruption in the West often center on systemic issues rather than overt illegality. Examples of this include lobbying, where wealthy individuals or corporations wield disproportionate influence over policy-making and opportunities for enrichment. This raises ethical concerns, even if it adheres to legal frameworks. The "revolving door" between politics and private industry is another area of lack of scrutiny, as it can blur lines between public service and private interests. Furthermore, scandals such as the 2009 UK parliamentary expenses controversy or financial misconduct exposed during the 2008 economic crisis demonstrate these vulnerabilities. Similarly, some argue that offshore tax havens linked to Western jurisdictions enable global financial corruption. Hence, in conclusion, while Britain and the West exhibit relatively low levels of overt corruption, systemic practices and scandals often come to light that suggest that the region is not immune to its own ethical and accountability challenges. Moreover, the Black Spy Podcast team note that perceptions of corruption often depend on the accepted societal norms, expectations, and evolving definitions of those compiling corruption indices. Meltdown: Scandal, Sleaze and the Collapse of Credit Suisse (Pegasus Books, 2024) is a great business history book. It meticulously chronicles the story of a large and once revered Swiss Bank, Credit Suisse, from its foundation in 1856 until how a series of scandals, driven by a culture of greed and entitlement among its bankers, led to the bank´s ultimate collapses in March 2023. The narrative also explores the bank's international expansion, particularly its partnership with First Boston in the United States. Meltdown is not just a history of Credit Suisse but a broader investigation into the systemic issues of greed, lies, and ambition that plague the financial industry. It raises critical questions about the future of big banks in a world where transparency and accountability are increasingly demanded. Learn more about your ad choices. How does a major global bank keep surviving crises; until it doesn't?Episode SummaryOn this episode, I'm joined by Duncan Mavin, author of Meltdown: Scandal, Sleaze, and the Collapse of Credit Suisse.Duncan's book dives deep into the bank's dramatic downfall, uncovering decades of mismanagement, scandals, and cultural clashes that eventually led to its collapse. SEASON 3 EPISODE 85: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: Justice Samuel Alito must be off from the Supreme Court of the United States. Immediately. Today. He is without any morals, ethics, judicial standards, and if he is aware of the CONCEPT of the appearance of the conflict he no longer gives a damn. ABC News reports – and Alito confirms – that on TUESDAY he SPOKE to Trump – the day before Trump’s lawyers filed an emergency request demanding Alito and the other justices BLOCK New York Judge Juan Merchan from sentencing Trump tomorrow for his 34 convictions in the Election Interference/Stormy Daniels case here. Even though there is 0% chance of jail time, and probably not much more of one of probation or a fine. The convicted felon constitutionally ineligible president-elect is also has the TikTok case in front of the Supreme Court AND will probably take the release of either or both of the two halves of the Jack Smith report on Trump – Espionage and the Coup Attempt – to the Supreme Court to try to keep those reports from ever seeing the light of a day and this human embodiment of sleaze Sam Alito TALKED TO HIM BY PHONE less than 48 hours ago.And what is Alito’s excuse for this complete breach of judicial etiquette? Alito told ABC the conversation WAS not about the cases, it was about… a job reference he wanted to personally given to get his law clerk a job in Trump's administration - even if it's true, ALSO a conflict of interest. Sam Alito to ABC News: "We did not discuss the emergency application he filed today, and indeed, I was not even aware at the time of our conversation that such an application would be filed. We also did not discuss any other matter that is pending or might in the future come before the Supreme Court or any past Supreme Court decisions involving the President-elect." Nonsense. Sam Alito lied in the case of the political flags flown over his homes and his conflicts with neighbors. He has publicly complained that the American public has had the nerve to disagree with him. He has imposed his religious nut job views on cases at the Court. How could you be so dense, so unaware of the hatred you personally have brought down upon this once most respected of American governmental institutions, as to conduct that call, NOW? I mean this would be cheap and petty and obvious and a conflict of interest even by Trumpian standards. Just recusing is insufficient. He must be off the court. In point of fact, Alito should recuse, resign… and go to hell. SOLUTION TO AILEEN CANNON? Ignore her. Solution to Mark Zuckerberg: Wonder with what Trump has threatened him. Solution to a tough Fox News town hall: Give Trump the questions secretly beforehand. Solution to invading Greenland, Canada, and Panama when we are by treaty required to protect Greenland, Canada and Panama? You got me. B-Block (46:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Jen Psaki does a lengthy commentary wondering, four years too late, if Merrick Garland was the wrong choice to be Attorney General and she was wrong to promote him. Ultimately she decides she didn't screw up because "nobody can predict the future" even though the rest of us did. Like even Erick Erickson, whose J6 tweet resurfaces in which he called for barring Trump for office for life. And the suicide bomber Bezos brought in to destroy the Washington Post actually asked how to attract Trump supporters. C-Block (58:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: The mandatory evacuation line in Santa Monica is three blocks north of the home I used to own when I worked there. It's amazing how a trivial detail like that can clarify a disaster like the L.A. fires - and how millions of us Angelenos (me included) managed to live in denial about the risks of living and building and expanding there. This is not criticism - it's confession.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A close ally of Boris Johnson and open critic of Rishi Sunak and Kemi Badenoch, Nadine Dorries examines the current state of the Conservative Party in this week's episode of the Political Fourcast - and she also criticises the Church of England in the wake of the John Smyth scandal. Warning: This episode contains content that some viewers might find upsetting. Mrs Dorries says she was abused as a child by a vicar. A Church of England spokesperson said: “We are truly sorry for the childhood abuse suffered by Nadine Dorries. “We can confirm that the National Safeguarding Team has been in ongoing contact with her following her brave disclosure of this abuse by an Anglican vicar, now deceased. “We have offered support and have left open the offer to speak further if she wants to do so. We are sorry that when the matter first came to the Church's attention in 2015 that she did not experience the response she should have received.” The Conservative Party was approached for comment. Produced by Silvia Maresca, Calum Fraser, Ka Yee Mak, Rob Thomson.
Philadelphia-based garage band Low Cut Connie is led by pianist, and songwriter Adam Weiner, who has been sexing up piano-based party rockenroll for quite some time. Along the way, critics anointed them with either or both the words “scuzz(ball)” and “sleaze”, later amplified by a Nashville local paper, who called them “Sultans of Sleaze” in a cover story. Their latest full-length, Art Dealers, celebrates hard at the intersection of sleazy and soulful, and “is all kink and no shame,” says Weiner in the press release. It sees the singer and pianist looking back at his early days in New York, -and to the gritty New York of Lou Reed and Patti Smith- with reckless abandon. Low Cut Connie lets loose with some of their wild, passionate rockenroll, in-studio. Set list: 1. Sleaze Me On 2. Are You Gonna Run? 3. Whips and Chains

Swiss banking has long been synonymous with secrecy, a harbinger of two things in the financial world: opportunity and risk. And Credit Suisse struggled to handle this balancing act for years, leading to its spectacular implosion in 2023. Switzerland's second largest bank had long been unscrupulous about housing ill-gotten wealth. Its bankers looked after Nazi loot and did business with “kings of kickbacks,” even collapsing the economy of Mozambique and employing private investigators to spy on its own employees. Joining us on this week's Whale Hunting is investigative reporter Duncan Mavin, who sits down with Bradley to discuss the long string of scandals that preceded Credit Suisse's collapse, the surprising touch paper for its disintegration, and a well-hidden industry secret: that bankers and hedge-funders do very little actual banking.Mentioned in this week's episode: Duncan Mavin's new book, Meltdown: Scandal, Sleaze and the Collapse of Credit Suisse His book about the collapse of Greensill: Pyramid of Lies: The Prime Minister, the Banker and the Billion-Pound Scandal Rob Copeland's book, The Fund: Ray Dalio, Bridgewater Associates, and the Unraveling of a Wall Street Legend Learn more about your ad choices. Siobhan and Max seem to lead a blissfully boring family life, complete with a young daughter and stable careers as teachers. But when Max's old band - one hit wonders 15 years ago - reform following a hit new cover of their song, Siobhan begins to question the stories she has told herself about their relationship and their past. Then troubling allegations about the band begin to emerge…Sleaze is an exploration of the culture of the early 2000s - in the music scene and more generally - and the generational shift that has occurred since then. The play delves into the ambiguities of memory and how the stories we tell of our life shifts as time moves on, and cultural tides change. It deals with challenging themes involving sexual assault and inappropriate relationships.Sleaze is written by Joe von Malachowski and Will Close (the writing partnership behind Mediocre White Male). Gordi Eaton is a legend in the ski industry, and while many people don't know his name, because he was born in 1939, he's had a huge impact in the development of modern ski technology. Before he was involved in helping to bring sidecut, shape, top shape, rocker, and so much more tech to the table, Gordi was an Olympian on the first Bob Beattie-created US Ski Teams that featured athletes like Bill Marolt and Buddy Werner. Then, after coaching at the highest level, Gordi became K2's Race Director, a sales rep, and more. On the podcast, we discuss coming up with no grooming or releasable bindings, putting the Mahre Brothers on K2, and his history with George Torme and Bode Miller. This one's a history lesson that needs to be told. As author Shannon A. Thompson once wrote about relationships, "We are together even when we are apart." What she didn't write, however, was that perhaps there are those in relationships that should stay apart. Far, far, apart.
