Throughout the Draculae miniseries, about the Swedish and Icelandic translations of Dracula that played fast and loose with the original text, I've been wondering a couple of questions: why are cover versions of songs and remakes of films so normal and acceptable, whereas cover versions in book form cause such a stir? And do these Scandinavian Draculae count as fan fiction? And if not, why not? Fansplaining.com's Elizabeth Minkel explains what fan fiction can mean.Visit theallusionist.org/transformation for more information plus a transcript of the episode. And though this is the fourth and last part of the Draculae miniseries, it is more inspired by than directly connected to the other episodes, so you don't have to listen to them beforehand. But do listen to them, they're very fun and intriguing!Content note: this episode contains some references to (but not descriptions of) sexual content and sex slavery. There is also mention of J.K. Rowling.Sign up at theallusionist.org/donate to fund the continuing existence of this independent podcast. Around this time in December, we usually wrap up Fansplaining with “The Year in Fandom”: a look back at five trends from the prior year followed by five trends from the year coming to a close. With Flourish's departure this summer, the podcast is now on hiatus—but I had a lot of thoughts about 2024, particularly when it came to fanfiction. Many thanks to Flourish for looking this over; in a way, it's a “Year in Fandom” segment in spirit. In 2024, everyone wanted a piece of fic, from AI grifters to traditional publishers to ravenous audiences. Where did that leave the people who write it? Come with me on a tour of Greenway. Special thanks to Clive and everyone at the National Trust for making me and my microphone welcome at Greenway, and to Sarah Thrift for arranging it. I'm also grateful to my friend Elizabeth Minkel, who spent the afternoon doing this even though she has only read one Christie novel in her whole life. She has her own podcast, Fansplaining, which I highly recommend. As fandom shifted from analog to digital, we have seen a seemingly endless stream of platforms through which to engage. But even now, there is no one way to engage that is more worthy than any other. In a break with tradition of this podcast, Elizabeth Minkel, "the world's loudest lurker," inspires a new topic: instead of discussing a specific fandom, we challenge a statement made in a previous episode. In order to define lurking, we must first define engagement. But what is the difference between tweeting about shipping and chatting about it with a friend over drinks. We’ve come a long way from cutting out pictures of our fandoms and glueing it into binders and notebooks, but fandom is still as difficult to pin down as it's ever been. But the real question is: will Elizabeth still need to wear a facemask and stay 6 feet away when she comes to fight me in person? This is a fandom podcast, so I've decided to host an airing of the fandom grievances. Please join me and my many guests as we rant, vent and complain about the things in fandom that aggrieve us. This episode features fandom grievances from: Charlotte Raines, Alex/atrashcancosplays, The Sin Squad, Jessica, Lucy Wheeler, Jake Mason, Angelina Meehan, Jessica Bone, Brittany Alsot, Chris Sims, James D'Amato, Flourish Klink and Elizabeth Minkel.

For our first episode, we take on a question that's close to many a metropolitan liberal's heart: why does everyone seem to hate us? To be more specific, what is it about world cities like London that seems to inspire as much loathing as admiration? To help us answer this question, we talk to writer, consultant and professional Yorkshireman Tom Forth, to get a northern view on how London is screwing up the rest of the country. We also talk to Elizabeth Minkel to get a US perspective on both London and New York. All that, and we talk about a map, too. Skylines is the podcast from CityMetric, the New Statesman cities site. It's presented by Jonn Elledge and Barbara Speed, and is a Roifield Brown production. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In the first episode of Fansplaining, Elizabeth Minkel and Flourish Klink introduce themselves and discuss their panel at SDCC, "Fandom Is My Fandom: Or, We All Live in a Coffeeshop AU." Topics covered include "going pro," selling out, making money in fandom, fandom as a safe space, and whether we should use the term "fandom" or "fandomS."
On this week's New Statesman Podcast: as the hangover from the party conference season kicks in, our politics team look forward to the results of two upcoming by-elections, Elizabeth Minkel and Ian Steadman discuss the pros and cons of becoming involved with a massive online community, while writer Damian Barr discusses sexuality, masculinity and the concept of the Great White Male.
