After gaining traction in the Bay Area scene and releasing their 1995 debut, Answer That and Stay Fashionable, the band signed to Nitro Records—the legendary incubator for some of punk's biggest names. In the ensuing years, AFI built a steady following through releases like 1997's Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes and 1998's A Fire Inside EP, while they cemented their long-running line-up with the addition of bassist Hunter Burgan in 1997 and, finally, guitarist Jade Puget in 1998.With the release of their fourth studio album, 1999's Black Sails in the Sunset, AFI moved in a new direction, expanding beyond their hardcore roots and venturing into increasingly melodic territory—incorporating elements of gothic rock, horror punk, and even reflective balladry—creating a unique style that would soon make them international stars.In the years following, AFI found significant commercial success, breaking into the mainstream with Platinum-selling albums like 2003's Sing the Sorrow and 2006's Decemberunderground, which topped the Billboard 200. Hey, everyone! Today, I'm very excited to talk with my good friend and one of the most talented composers I've ever met, Bear McCreary! Not only was he the composer for Battlestar Galactica, but he has gone on to work on shows like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Black Sails, Outlander, The Walking Dead,  and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. We first met when we were both little babies on Battlestar. I was surprised to find out I wasn't the only young person on the crew - Bear was the composer at only 24! Today, we're diving deep into his career, how he got interested in music, landed the Battlestar gig, and what he's working on these days. Which speaking of, Bear just released his new double album and graphic novel project, “The Singularity”. She is the author of Pirates of the Chesapeake Bay: From the Colonial Era to the Oyster Wars (Charleston, SC: The History Press, 2020), National Geographic's Pirates: Shipwrecks, Conquests, and their Lasting Legacy (Washington, D.C.: National Geographic, 2021), Pirates and Privateers from Long Island Sound to Delaware Bay (Charleston, SC: The History Press, 2022), and The Daring Exploits of Black Sam Bellamy: From Cape Cod to the Caribbean (Charleston, SC: The History Press, 2023).Rebecca Simon is a historian of early modern piracy, Colonial America, the Atlantic World, and maritime history. She earned her PhD from King's College London in 2017. My dissertation, entitled: “The Crimes of Piracy and its Punishment: The Performance of Maritime Supremacy in the British Atlantic World, 1670 – 1830,” examines British maritime and legal supremacy in its early American colonies in regards to maritime piracy. She uses the public executions of pirates in London and the Americas as my narrative to see how the colonists reacted to increased legal restrictions by British authorities, which ultimately led to new ideas of autonomy.

Tom Hopper (The Umbrella Academy, Black Sails) joins us this week to share his experience in this industry from finding balance in his health amid physically demanding roles to the grounded perspective that parenting has brought him. Tom talks a lot about Umbrella Academy's bittersweet ending, uncomfortable pain in early seasons, and everything in between. The Acolyte is something new for Star Wars, which can be rare in this day and age. Forget the haters. Ben and his eleven year old really enjoyed the campiness of Madame Web, and we're kinda bummed they're not gonna make the sequels they were totally setting up. Book Club: The Black Pages by Nnedi Okorafor (part of Amazon's Black Stars collection of scifi short stories). A solid 4 out of 4 stars this week, but was it scifi? Or was it modern mythology? A djinn is reborn into an iPad app after her book is burned in an al-Qaeda raid on an ancient library, and the boy carrying the iPad is now way in over his head. Kevin talks Lisa Frankenstein, Skull and Bones, and The 1976 version of The Omen.  Honestly, there isn't much more to say than that! Andrew and Lauren are out this week so Kevin got lucky when Lisa Frankenstein dropped on Peacock. It's new enough to be relevant AND it was something he was hoping to see. As it so often goes when he doesn't have supervision, Kevin also talks about video games. This time, it's the high seas piracy game Skull and Bones. Is it a rip off of Black Sails? It sure is! But it's ok because Ubisoft owns them both. At least I think that's why it's ok... He then finishes off the show with an incredibly short take on the original The Omen. Jesse Starcher and Mark Radulich present their Alestorm Voyage of the Dead Marauder 2024 Album Review as part of the MHOD Jukebox!"Infamous metal pirates ALESTORM return with another batch of mischief on their new EP, entitled Voyage of the Dead Marauder, out March 22, 2023 via Napalm Records. The EP arrives as the successor to their epic seventh studio album, Seventh Run of a Seventh Rum, which peaked at #7 on the German Album charts and #5 on both the US Current Hard Music and Top New Artist Albums charts. Once more, ALESTORM collaborated with producer Lasse Lammert (LSD-Studios), who produced, recorded, mixed and mastered the new EP and is known for his work with fellow genre greats Gloryhammer and Wind Rose.Alestorm are a Scottish heavy metal band formed in Perth, Scotland. Their music is characterised by a pirate theme, and as a result, they have been dubbed a "pirate metal" band by many critics and their fanbase. The group currently consists of lead vocalist/keytarist Christopher Bowes, bassist Gareth Murdock, drummer Peter Alcorn, keyboardist/harsh vocalist Elliot Vernon and guitarist Máté "Bobo" Bodor.After signing to Napalm Records in 2007, their debut album Captain Morgan's Revenge, was released on 25 January 2008. Black Sails at Midnight, the band's second album, was released on 27 May 2009. The band's third album, Back Through Time, was released on 3 June 2011.
