Allegiance (Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG), S3 E18) was recommended by NightCat He/Him, who said: Picard gets captured and sent to a room with a few other aliens. Then PseudoPicard is running the ship, singing drinking songs and apparently fascinated with dangerous pulsars! There was a guy in that episode, one of the aliens in the room. He had a kind of robe on. His species was reputed for having been conquered over and over again. I found it interesting that they used that same concept in a Doctor Who episode during the Matt Smith era called "The God Complex". There was a kind of ratlike guy whose species had the same reputation! I've seen a lot of borrows in the new Doctor Who, although I adore the show! But this was a pretty direct lift and it was hard to miss.I also found the PseudoPicard to be really interesting. The strange date he has with Beverly Crusher before he just kicks her out. Sometimes I remember the drinking song he does and I find myself trying to remember the lyrics. Weird stuff! But it really caught my attention.Allegiance first aired on March 26, 1990, written by Richard Manning & Hans Beimler, and directed by Winrich KolbeAliens kidnap Captain Picard and replace him with a duplicate who sends the Enterprise to a pulsar. Meanwhile, the real Picard and three other captives try to escape from their prison. The Joy of Trek is hosted by Khaki & Kay, with editing & production by Chief Engineer Greg and music by Fox Amoore (Bandcamp | Bluesky)Send us your recommendations, or support us on Patreon.Find us at joyoftrek.com · Twitter · Facebook

John and Jim conclude Colin Baker's tumultuous era with a two-part finale born from tragedy, scrambled rewrites, and production chaos - resulting in wildly divergent reactions from the hosts and fandom's most controversial regeneration-that-never-was. The Production Nightmare: John details Robert Holmes passing while writing Part 1, Eric Saward writing Part 2 from Holmes' notes but refusing to release it when JNT rejected his cliffhanger ending (the Doctor and Valeyard falling into an abyss), Pip and Jane Baker getting 10 days to write an entirely new Part 2 using only existing sets from Part 1, and the longest Classic Who episode clocking in at 30 minutes when the Bakers' 38-minute script had to be pared down. The Valeyard Revelation: Extensive discussion of the bombshell that the Valeyard is "an amalgamation of the Doctor's darker impulses from between his twelfth and final incarnations." The hosts debate why this huge concept has never been revisited on screen despite New Who passing that point in the timeline, compare it to Star Trek's "The Enemy Within" and Jekyll/Hyde dynamics, question how the Valeyard established himself on Gallifrey as a respected prosecutor, and marvel that this mythology-altering revelation planted seeds that never grew. The Master's Motivations: Jim questions why the Master appears at all beyond Robert Holmes liking the character. Discussion covers the Master entering the Matrix with a duplicate key, his refusal to let the Valeyard deny him the pleasure of destroying the Doctor personally, and the irony of him being frozen in the Matrix alongside Glitz by story's end. Peri's Resurrection: The hosts examine the shoehorned reveal that Peri survived to become Yrcanos' warrior queen - a retcon driven by negative audience reaction to her original death. Discussion includes Nicola Bryant's mixed feelings (initially disappointed, now embracing it in recent appearances), comparisons to Leela, and whether either ending serves the character well. Continuity Catastrophes: The Inquisitor doesn't recognize the Master then suddenly knows he's a renegade Time Lord within the same episode. The Seventh Door to the Matrix is inexplicably on the space station. The High Council gets deposed by insurrectionists in unexplained chaos. Jim gets "completely lost" by events on Gallifrey that are told but never shown. Bonnie Langford's Redemption: Both hosts praise Bonnie's performance in Part 2 when freed from Robert Holmes and Eric Saward's diminishment of Mel. Discussion covers her not being reduced to singer/dancer stereotypes, total recall ability introduced in "Terror of the Vervoids," recognizing Time Lord modems, and Jim's appreciation that she's treated as the Doctor's equal rather than damsel. The Detective Doctor: Jim dubs Colin "The Detective Doctor" for his Sherlock Holmes/Batman deductive reasoning throughout the trial, calling himself "Old 60" and piecing together clues about Matrix manipulation, fake Mel's knowledge gaps, and the list of judges in his own handwriting. The Ending That Never Was: Colin Baker's final words as the Doctor - "Carrot juice, carrot juice, carrot juice" - haunt him to this day. Discussion of newspapers announcing his firing the day Part 2 aired, his refusal to return for a regeneration story (offering one more season instead), becoming the only Doctor without an onscreen regeneration until Big Finish remedied it, and the raw deal of only 11 stories total. Production Chaos Recap: No script editor credited for Part 2. JNT forced to act as story editor while fighting to keep Doctor Who alive. The Bakers writing without access to Holmes' notes or Saward's script. Sets already built constraining Part 2's possibilities. Colin knowing this was his swan song but giving his finest courtroom performance. The 30-minute runtime requiring BBC schedule adjustments. The Final Twist: The Keeper revealed as the Valeyard in disguise, laughing menacingly as the ultimate cliffhanger - planted seeds for a new showrunner who would start from scratch with Sylvester McCoy. The hosts question why this twist exists when they already knew Colin was gone and had no next doctor or story editor lined up. Mel's Future: Discussion of older-looking Mel with Beverly Crusher-style hair arriving with Glitz, speculation about when they were plucked from (possibly her eventual departure with Glitz's carrot juice company and TV show), and total recall proving essential to exposing the fake Matrix trial. Coming Up Next: Patreon Exclusive (Monday): Comics "Changes" and "Salad Daze," Memory TARDIS spin, more music, and a Season 23 retrospective examining the good, bad, and ugly while preparing for Sylvester McCoy's arrival. Patreon Exclusive (Friday): "Colin Baker: One Last Look" - a retrospective on the man and his 11-story tenure. What do you say about a colony on an alien world that tries to be Scotland but is actually just a setting for misogynistic gaslighting, or, perhaps, ghost-lighting? I don't know. We're workshopping that one. Just like the writers were with this script. Hey-o! Beverly Crusher's grandmother passes away and at the funeral is a fetching lad. That lad starts to seduce Beverly through the power of journal-writing and candles, then turns her against the rest of the crew trying to get her to come to her senses. Picard finally does it, but then Beverly fires a new phaser setting to rescue herself from having to moan on camera anymore. We compare American and European styles, discuss the legendary impact of Philippe Gaulier, and examine why so few people are teaching physical comedy correctly today.Crucially for the stand-up community, John deconstructs gag structures, explaining exactly how a physical gag differs from a verbal joke and how you can use these frameworks to build more dynamic material. The Great Rosary Campaign is an ongoing prayer and penance campaign for the conversion and strengthening of both Catholic and non-Catholic leaders. As a "Trekkie" (lover of Star Trek), we will be devoting several Great Rosary Campaigns to praying for the conversion of all remaining Star Trek cast members to the Catholic Faith.THIS WEEK of the Great Rosary Campaign: Star Trek Edition, we are praying for the conversion of Gates McFadden, who played Dr. Beverly Crusher, chief medical officer of the various Enterprises in "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Please join us in praying that she may "live long and prosper" unto eternal life. The SUGGESTED PENANCE this week is a Holy Hour before the Blessed Sacrament, the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Our Lord in the Holy Eucharist. In these dark times, we must fight evil with the most powerful weapons we have. The Rosary is foremost among them. Join the Great Rosary Campaign today at: www.GreatRosaryCampaign.com.Countless Saints and Popes have told us that the Rosary is incredibly powerful for three things in particular:Keeping the FaithMoral renovationConversions of non-CatholicsThe Great Rosary Campaign is also based on several biblical themes and principles.First, PRAY FOR OUR BRETHREN. “Pray for one another…” (Jas. 5:16). “So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all men, and especially to those who are of the household of faith" (Gal. 6:10).Second, PRAY FOR OUR ENEMIES. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven" (Matt. 5:43-44).Third, PRAY FOR ALL MEN, PARTICULARLY LEADERS AND THOSE IN AUTHORITY. “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men, or kings and all who are in high positions…” (1 Tim. 2:1-2).Fourth, GOING INTO BATTLE WITH THE ARK. When the ancient Israelites came to Jericho, God didn't tell them to besiege the city. Instead, He told them to march around it with the Ark of the Covenant seven times, and on the seventh the walls would fall. We will now "march" in prayer for seven days with the New Ark of the Covenant, Our Lady, through the Rosary. We pray in hope that on the seventh day, a day especially devoted to Our Lady (Saturday), extraordinary graces of conversion will be given to those we are praying for.Fifth, EVANGELISM AND APOLOGETICS = LOVE + ARGUMENTS + PRAYER + PENANCE. Ultimately it is God who reveals Himself to a soul, and empowers them to say "yes" to Him by His grace. He chooses to use us, but He does not have to. We must remember that as we evangelize and defend the Faith, our arguments will be fruitless unless informed by love (charity), and reinforced by prayer and penance.Sixth, RETURNING GOOD FOR EVIL. “Do not return evil for evil, or reviling for reviling; but on the contrary bless, for to this you have been called, that you may obtain a blessing" (1 Pet. 3:9).Sign up to take part in the Great Rosary Campaign today: www.GreatRosaryCampaign.com

Come on a journey with us. A story of true love, as we watch Star Trek: The Next Generation's "Data's Day", one of the great romances of all time.  We speak, of course, of the relationship between Admiral Mendak and Subcommander Selok.  Also Miles and Keiko get married.  This is the third episode in our wedding series, and the first marriage between two enthusiastically consenting adults But is it? Is it really? Keiko is a controversial character for a lot of reasons, many of which boil down to sexism and racism, but ALSO her introduction here does her no favours Much like Deanna and Wyatt in "Haven", Miles and Keiko's relationship is written as if they are adolescents AND IT'S WEIRD We are obsessed with all the background details: Age Gap Couple! The USS Zhukov! 17 feline supplements! Helm Ken! Patricia Tallman!  Data considers Worf a kindred spirit, and we have to ask: does Worf feel the same way? One oblique hint at a time, we WILL make Beverly Crusher a three-dimensional character! LOVE the costumes in this ep, mostly, but we cannot endorse Keiko's hair chopsticks Not many people know this, but T'Pel's shark fin hat and Winn's Sydney Opera House hat are friends

We explore Beverly as a rebel, scientist, and advocate for life, examine her dynamic with Nurse Ogawa, and discuss the ethical conflict between her Hippocratic Oath and Starfleet's Prime Directive.   The episode also presents a classic whodunit with a fascinating cast of characters, and we break down key moments, continuity connections, and Crusher's evolving role in the Star Trek universe. Was Beverly ahead of her time, or unfairly judged? Beam aboard for all this and more!

It's a meta-existential threat episode! Riker is an actor in a play written by Beverly Crusher, or is that Jonathan Frakes? Or is it the host of Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction? This episode is written in such a delicious way, blending exposition and strange character behavior in a perception-annihilating frame of mind. I am shattered, like the fabric of reality poor Riker is experiencing, each time I watch it. Shades of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Waiting for Godot, and The Matrix collide in a tour-de-force performance by Jonathan Frakes. Casual Trek - A Star Trek Recap and Ranking Podcast

It's Halloween time again! Put on your sexy Star Trek costume and make sure you're fully in control of your faculties because you might not be entirely you in there! This time, our Casual Explorers decided to explore some of the many psychic and or energy beings who can just pop inside your flesh and blood as easy as a pair of boots. In Enterprise's ‘Observer Effect,' Trip and Hoshi get sick off Klingon rubbish while Travis and Reed get possessed by one very eager energy being and one who is basically #quietquitting, in Deep Space Nine's ‘The Assignment,' O'Brien's life is once more a living hell when his wife gets taken over by the Pah'Wraiths and Rom struggles to make friends at work and finally, we round it off with our main event, Dr. Beverly Crusher's adventures with sex-ghosts who live in candles ‘Sub Rosa' and Charlie and Miles find themselves watching one of Star Trek's worst-ranked episodes and ask the most important question, 'Do the Scottish know there's a Scotland in Space?' Honestly, it's much more fun to watch Troi get heavily involved in talking about Crusher's sex dreams than it ever is to have to engage in discussions on the ethics of terrorism as we did last episode. If you or anyone else is showing signs of possession, please don't come to us for help, Google it. Or ask us on Ko-Fi.Episodes Discussed: Observer Effect (12:25), The Assignment (42:12) and Sub Rosa (01:13:40)SHOW NOTES: The FULL English Breakfast, Miles forgot to do his Crypt-Keeper Schtick this Halloween, he also has opinions on the Halloween series of films, the Leprechaun films, Legend of Zelda Echoes of Wisdom, Jailhouse Rock's surprising appearance on the charts and a quick diversion into British music magazine the NME, Let Me Love You is possibly the WORST song we've had to listen to for the show (you win this round, Sheeran!) Miles admits to his dark past as a ‘Nice Guy' The Andromeda Strain, You gotta feel sorry for Klingon Plumbers, quiet-quitting Energy Beings, the Organians have gone all The Good Place with their criteria for success, how this would have ended if this were either an episode of The Twilight Zone or The Outer Limits, the Spice Girls, Charlie DOES know songs that weren't featured on Rock Band thank you very much, Miles takes a break from bitching about Starbucks to bitch about the Hilton, Deep Space Nine and Babylon 5 are ripping each-other, Bashir and O'Brien being sitcom scamps, Rom trying to make friends, ‘Things can Only Get Better' is a song that'll forever be thought as an anthem for Neo-Liberal malaise, Sunshine, Charlie recommends a horror film,Scream, Bryan Adams, Sting & Rod Stewart as alternate Three Musketeers, Have YOU ever told a boss about a sexual fantasy? Marina Sirtis' accent slips a lot, ‘The Innocents', Charlie's RPG of the week ‘The Between,' would Ronin have had to seduce Wesley Crusher? Despite it's female audience Star Trek always has a Male Gaze on the Cosmos, SF complaining about romance and sexuality, the SCOTTISH PLANET, the fact there's a church leads us to wonder if the Abrahamic Religions are still practised and worshipped in the often-secular Star Trek, consent in ‘Sub Rosa' comparing to consent in ‘Plato's Stepchildren,'PEDANTS CORNER: It's Busta Rhymes who kung-fu'd Michael Myers in Halloween Resurrection, The Defiant actually came first with Deep Space Nine's Season 3 in 1994 Babylon 5 introduced the White Star in Season 3 in 1995. Although, when talking about Doctor Who, I didn't think to consider that some of the more legitimate arguments against the Doctor being more sexual as a being has felt like the show's Ace-Erasure to fans who see the Doctor as an all-too-rare example of positive Asexual Representation)Casual Trek is by Charlie Etheridge-Nunn and Miles Reid-LobattoMusic by Alfred Etheridge-NunnCasual Trek is a part of the Nerd & Tie Networkhttps://ko-fi.com/casualtrekMiles' blog: http://www.mareidlobatto.wordpress.com Charlie's blog: http://www.fakedtales.com

Going to California. The whole gang is here in San Francisco, Guinan, Jack London, and Mark Twain included. There are aliens stealing human mind energies and Beverly Crusher has been crushing it as a nurse in a cholera ward. If there was a way to hide murderous aliens by going back in time, our dear doctor tells us THIS would be the perfect crime. Except Riker the cop who totally respects the law. Twain is a pain in Guinan's actual bonnet, while Picard rents a room from the most Irish landlady in Berkeley as, you guessed it, a traveling band of theater actors rehearsing Midsummer's Night Dream. Twain goes through time to the Enterprise, Data's head gets screwed on, and Guinan falls in friend love with a bald man. Then everything gets wrapped nicely. Somehow. Spring has sprung, so it's no better time for a seasonal special, baby!! Join Joe, Ali, Chris, and Branson as they draft their dream Trek bridge crew, chat about Vulcans, oh and make one incredible surprise announcement. Don't miss it!TREK DRAFT RULESThis will be a snake draft. You will draft a crew of 7 officers to helm your StarshipYour crew must fill the following roles: Captain, Executive Officer/Security Officer, Science Officer, Ship's Doctor, Chief Engineer, a ‘soft skills' officer (Guinan, Neelix, Uhura), and a Wildcard (Wesley, Nog, someone else from another role). These roles may be drafted in any order, but failure to draft each of these positions will result in an invalid draft slate and immediate ejection from the draft.Babylon Who? Battlestar Galacti-what? Only characters from Star Trek series and films are eligible for this draft. Firefly is in the jar! Han Solo? A no-no!The JJ Decree: Eligible series and movies for this draft must take place in what is commonly understood as the main Star Trek universe. The JJ Abrams versions of characters are not eligible. For each slot, the character must reasonably be able to serve in that role. For example: Beverly Crusher could conceivably serve as your Captain, but Jean-Luc Picard could not be your Doctor.Quark's on the bridge? Trek characters who are not Federation officers but could serve in these roles are eligible. These characters are also eligible to be wildcards.Distribution: Your crew cannot come exclusively from one series.Draft Exclusivity: Once you draft a character, no other player may draft that character to their crew. This includes time travel/Mirror Universe/alternate future counterparts.Sulu's Rule: If a character has multiple jobs over the course of their Starfleet career, that does not mean they are eligible multiple times. If Player A drafts Sulu as their helmsman, Player B cannot draft movie Sulu as their Captain, etc.Combs's Bylaw: Different characters played by the same actor are eligible to be drafted alongside each other or by different players. Player A could draft Weyoun and Brunt (both played by Jeffrey Combs) if they so choose.Uhura's Corollary: When a single character is played by different actors, those different performances are considered one (1) character. If TOS Uhura is drafted, Strange New Worlds Uhura is ineligible. The Riker Exception: Because William Riker gets split into two people in that one episode and his double, Thomas Riker goes on to live a separate, individual life from the point of that split, for the purposes of this Draft both Rikers are eligible. You are allowed to name your ship. You heard right!  The whole cast is doing a LIVE SHOW AT THE BELL HOUSE IN BROOKLYN ON MARCH 30TH.  Rude Tales of Magic: Lent Enders!  Buy your tickets now!!Join our Patreon now for tons more stuff, including AN ENTIRE ADDITIONAL EPISODE EVERY MONTH for patrons only. It's remarkable that a early 90s sci-fi show examined the idea of rape. The Enterprise plays host to a race of psychic spelunkers on a quest to catalog the galaxy's memories for history's sake. The father is a flirty fool, saying some inappropriate things to the Dr. Beverly Crusher after he skillfully illuminates a memory for Keiko. But it's the son who is the real monster. He attaches himself to a memory of Troi and Riker lingering after a poker game and turns it ugly. He then terrorizes more of the crew until Troi kicks him in the balls. Beverly Crusher - Vacuum from the 2022 album Waste of Waves on Freakout. Seattle punk rock band Beverly Crusher has been chipping away and threatening a full album for about three years and finally have come to the point they can share said forthcoming new album Waste of Waves, out on Freakout Records. Said Cozell Wilson (guitar and vocals) of their brand new LP, "We had so many set backs, development, and growth working on this album that all we can be is ecstatic that it finally printed in its final form on a sick record label that really believes in us and bends over backwards to support independent music. 17 year old us wouldn't believe this is real."
