Then, they share their Top 5 Books of 2026 So Far and a few disappointing reads that didn't quite live up to expectations. A new podcast episode of "Sound Speed Action," a review episode on the movie "In The Grey" (2026), is now available everywhere you get your podcasts!Episode 68 – Review: In The Grey (2026)Guy Ritchie movies are special. There is always something fun about them. I got hooked with the one-two punch that opened his career, "Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" and "Snatch", and I have followed him ever since. The phases of Ritchie:The amazing start: "Lock Stock" and "Snatch".Veering off course (the Madonna era): "Swept Away" (yikes, not Ritchie).Finding his way back: "Revolver" and "Rocknrolla".There he is!: "Sherlock Holmes", "Aladdin", and "The Gentlemen". Now he is everywhere, also making shows like "MobLand" and "Young Sherlock". But spreading himself thin has recently produced fun yet troubled movies."In The Grey"Pros: Eiza Gonzalez is the most fun thing here, full of charisma, not phoning it in. The action and that kinetic, slapstick Ritchie energy are intact. The understated Chris Benstead score adds to it, and the locations are fantastic.Cons: Gyllenhaal and Cavill are dialed way down, so the tough guys never feel human. That ties into the bigger problem: the protagonists never feel in real danger, the third straight Ritchie film with that issue. The courts get manipulated so easily that nothing pushes back, so there are no stakes. The on-screen scribble text is overused to hide the gaps, and the ending, hurt by reshoots that never happened, just abruptly drops."In The Grey" hits rental everywhere June 2nd (it was in theaters May 15...

With more rain in the forecast, drivers should remember: “turn around, Don't drown,” when they cannot see the road under floodwater. Learn more about your ad choices. U Guys, we are so back! In this episode, I am joined by Broadway performer, writer, producer, and activist, Matt DeAngelis, to talk about his incredible charity event for breast cancer research, The Janice Jam: Broadway For Breast Cancer. With a Broadway career spanning from Hair to Swept Away, Matt is no stranger to the stage, but it is his advocacy and use of his artistry for change that are most inspiring. In honor of his mother, Janice, who passed away from breast cancer, Matt has created an annual fundraising event, The Janice Jam: Broadway For Breast Cancer, taking place this year at a sold-out Sony Hall on May 4th! If you don't already have tickets, fear not, as the event will be live-streamed, and you can still donate directly to the Janice Jam, with all proceeds benefiting The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Perfumes, un roast y una esperada eliminación
This week on Sibling Watchery, Bob and Monét recap RuPaul's Drag Race Season 18, Episode 11. With the queens back in the workroom after no elimination, Bob and Monét discuss whether Discord was cheating wit the safey pins or just pushing the boundaries. The queens prepare for the roast of Alyssa Edwards, leading to a conversation about whether roasting is essential for drag and if the order of performers really matters. They discuss Myki's strategy in setting the order, whether Nini is relying too much on others' opinions, and how outfits can impact the way comedy is delivered. They break down Darlene's set and share their favorite jokes of the night. On the runway, they review the Swept Away looks, name the best and worst of the week, and reveal their top picks for the crown. Thanks to our sponsors: Book your next experience on Airbnb! This week on RuPaul's Drag Race, the queens are tasked with celebrating—and roasting—drag royalty. The episode begins with a throwback mini challenge inspired by Season 5, where the queens must create a scent and film a commercial to promote it. The chaos continues with the maxi challenge: delivering a toast (that quickly becomes a roast) honoring the one and only Alyssa Edwards. On the runway, the category is “Swept Away,” as the queens face dramatic wind effects meant to send their garments—and nerves—flying. In the end, Darlene Mitchell snatches the win for the week, while Kenya Pleaser and Juicy Love Dion land in the bottom two. After a lip sync battle for their lives, Juicy is told “Shantay, you stay,” and Kenya Pleaser is asked to sashay away. Joe and Lauri break down the episode, debate the judging decisions, and share their big takeaways from another dramatic week in the competition. • The mini challenge brings back the infamous scent commercial concept from Season 5—and the results are as bizarre as expected. • The queens attempt to “toast” Alyssa Edwards, but the challenge quickly turns into a full-on roast. • Joe and Lauri discuss the difference between comedy that kills in a live room versus comedy that translates on television. • A debate over whether Darlene Mitchell's performance truly deserved the win—or if the humor simply played better in the room than on screen. • The hosts analyze why roast jokes must be concise and how delivery, pacing, and character work affect whether a joke lands. • A discussion about Kenya Pleaser's charisma versus the technical comedy skills needed for a roast challenge. • Joe reflects on the surprisingly low drama among the remaining queens and whether a kinder cast makes for less compelling reality TV. Joe's big takeaway centers on the unusual dynamic of this season's cast. With most of the queens getting along and avoiding open conflict, the traditional reality-TV narrative feels absent. While that may make the competition less dramatic, it also creates a rare moment where the queens compete more on talent than interpersonal chaos. Whether that makes for better television—or just different television—is still up for debate. Businesses in a small Waikato town are facing uncertainity after a vital bridge was taken-out in severe weather, resulting in a detour that is taking much needed customers away from them. It's been a week since heavy rain totalled the Mangati Bridge at Puketotara on State Higway 39 between Pirongia and Otorohanga. Tourists and traffic from the highway that would normally travel through Pirongia are now being diverted through Te Awamutu. Mountain Folk Cafe Retreat's owner Michelle Richardson spoke to Lisa Owen.
Sam Raimi's new survival thriller Send Help is more overtly comedic and cartoonishly violent than the other film in this week's pairing of dueling castaway duos, but those qualities are both rooted in complimentary ideas about class, gender, and power. They're also both rooted in a baseline cynicism toward humanity that informs a lot of Raimi's work, as well as our discussion of Send Help, for which we are once again joined by cultural critic and friend of the show Charles Bramesco. Then in Connections we bring 1974's Swept Away back into the discussion to see how its sexual fantasy aligns with Send Help's revenge fantasy, and how both are shaped by these films' desert (or is it deserted?) island setting. Please share your thoughts about Swept Away, Send Help, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. What happens when two people on opposite sides of a power imbalance end up stranded together on a deserted island? Before that was the premise of Sam Raimi's new comedic thriller Send Help, it was the setup for Lina Wertmüller's 1974 romantic farce Swept Away, only with the genders reversed and the sexual and political provocation turned way up. So this week we're joined by critic, friend of the show, and Wertmüller aficionado Charles Bramesco to sort through Swept Away's overlapping layers of satire, metaphor, and titillation, in an attempt to pinpoint what the film is actually trying to say about gender and class relations. Please share your thoughts about Swept Away, Send Help, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Even without Al Pacino's name in its cast list, the new Dead Man's Wire would invite comparisons to Dog Day Afternoon in its dramatization of a real-life 1970s hostage situation turned public spectacle. Whether it benefits from comparisons to Sidney Lumet's 1975 crime classic is another question, one we take up in our discussion of Gus Van Sant's first new feature in eight years. After that, we bring Dog Day Afternoon back in for Connections, to consider how these two films about volatile, narcissistic men and their ostensibly populist schemes fit into the proud tradition of amateur-hour crime movies, and whether a modern film depicting Indianapolis half a century ago has any hope of evoking its setting the way Lumet captured contemporary 1970s New York. Please share your thoughts about Dog Day Afternoon, Dead Man's Wire, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Now that we're in October already, it's a fine time to reflect on the uncanny grasp that horror has in the hearts of so many queer people. So for this week's episode, we're heading into the Sewers archives for a chat with director Jeffrey Schwarz, for whom horror is just one small slice of the story. Jeffrey's made a lifelong study of film, starting with an early job editing the documentary The Celluloid Closet, right up to today with documentaries about people like Divine, Vito Russo, and horror icon William Castle. I chatted with Jeffrey back in 2017, when he was about to debut a documentary about the flamboyant producer Alan Carr — a fitting subject, since as a young gay man, Jeffrey found kindred spirits in people who, like him, reveled in intensity and excess. We'll have that conversation in just a minute. First, a reminder that I have a new YouTube videos out about the movie Kiss of the Spider Woman. That's available now at youtube.com/mattbaume.And also! For the entire month of October I'm hosting livestreams of films by and about James Whale, the iconic director behind 1931's Frankenstein and many other classics. Join me every Saturday and Sunday on Twitch for movies like The Old Dark House, The Invisible Man, and of course Frankenstein and The Bride of Frankenstein. This weekend we'll be watching clips from the 1994 film Gods & Monsters, and examining how closely that fictional account of Whale's life follows the reality. That's at Twitch.tv/mattbaume this Saturday and Sunday. And as always, if you're enjoying The Sewers of Paris, support the show on Patreon at Patreon.com/mattbaume.

What is the role of art in today's political reality—comfort, challenge, escape… all of the above? In this wide-ranging, candid conversation, conductor Alyssa Wang joins Kate to wrestle with the big questions artists, leaders, and audiences are asking right now: Does art really “bring people together”—and what does that actually mean? How do we reconcile fundraising language with tangible community impact? Can programming be both an invitation to joy and a catalyst for reflection? Where does an artist's responsibility begin and end—in the hall, on the podium, or in civic life? How can leaders speak authentically without polarizing their communities? Alyssa shares openly about purpose, impact, and leadership in an era of stress, censorship, and escalating tension—and why empathy, community building, and honest dialogue may be our most essential artistic tools. About Today's Guest: Alyssa Wang is a passionate and versatile conductor, violinist, and composer. She is the Co-founder/Artistic Director/Principal Conductor of the Boston Festival Orchestra, the Music Director of the Cincinnati Ballet, and Music Director of the Cape Symphony (MA). Her honors include the 2024 New Music USA Creator Fund, 2023 Solti Foundation Career Assistance Award, and 2022 St. Botolph Emerging Artist Award. As a performer and composer, Alyssa has soloed with ensembles across the U.S., premiered her own violin concerto Swept Away, and recorded on Grammy-nominated projects (including Carlos Simon's Requiem for the Enslaved). In this episode, we discuss: The long game of artistic impact: what ripples are real vs. rhetoric “Bringing people together”: beyond bodies in seats to shared experience Escapism vs. engagement: why Pops can be active community-building Programming with integrity: reflecting a community without stopping there Leadership under pressure: speaking to humanity, not partisanship The artist as citizen: where civic action may satisfy the need for tangible impact Stress, doomscrolling, and giving audiences a place to listen and feel Balancing institutional voice and personal convictions as the public face of an org Connect with Alyssa Instagram: @AlyssaWang1895 More from Kate Book: Beyond Potential — practical frameworks to realign your work and life Sign up for Kate's Newsletter: The Weekend List — weekly sparks for high achievers Connect on Instagram: @kkayaian Enjoyed this conversation? The Cavs left few questions after dismantling the Heat. Was their dominance surprising in any way? And are they now the favorites in the Eastern Conference? Plus looking ahead to whether Indiana will put up a fight in the conference semifinals, and parsing an interesting quote about Darius Garland from TNT play-by-play man Brian Anderson.
