Today we cover a mix of festive holiday reflections and current Christmas trends. We debate the merits of artificial versus real trees, the Federal Reserve's recent decision to lower interest rates, market reactions, and the potential onset of a recession, and historical cases like Puerto Rico's bond defaults, and more! It's a Merry Christmas here! Today we discuss... How Hanukkah's alignment with Christmas is rare due to differing solar cycles and offers a unique multi-year celebration opportunity for 2024-2025. A shift from real to artificial Christmas trees, driven by mold allergies. A personal tradition of year-end reflection, dubbed "Best Year Ever," emphasizing life evaluation and goal setting over a two-week holiday break. Fed Chair Powell's interest rate cuts and their implications for markets and economic confidence were analyzed, with insights on potential recession signals like the inverted yield curve. Economic indicators, including high-yield bond performance and confidence metrics, were examined to forecast recession risks and investor sentiment. The Puerto Rican bond default served as a cautionary tale for assessing risks in high-yield portfolios, drawing parallels to current market trends. Market bullishness is fueled by a strong economy, decent earnings, and optimism about new presidential policies perceived as pro-business. Concerns were raised about tariff policies potentially replacing income tax and their inflationary implications. The market appears overvalued, with current performance exceeding economic fundamentals, risking a potential correction. Reversion to the mean was discussed as a natural market dynamic, suggesting that extreme highs or lows eventually balance out. Rising money market assets reflect cautious investor behavior, with significant cash reserves awaiting better market valuations. Inflationary pressures are linked to reduced supply and increased money supply, paralleling market dynamics. Markets need a perceived value shift to attract sidelined liquidity. Year-end is a prime time to reassess portfolios and consider tax implications. Reflect on strong market performance and evaluate whether reallocating or profit-taking is prudent. December 31st and January 1st are pivotal market dates due to tax-loss selling and portfolio rebalancing. Diversification theory, while historically valuable, may now be less effective due to increased asset correlation. Risk is the permanent loss of capital, whereas volatility is short-term price fluctuation. The current bull market may soon rival the 1990s tech boom in duration and performance, though a mean reversion is expected. High-yield bonds should be viewed more like high-dividend equities due to their risk and reward profile. Online shopping has grown but still accounts for less than 20% of total retail sales. Men and women share similar preferences for holiday gifts, favoring money, clothing, and gift cards. Happy Festivus! As a special bonus treat, here's our breakdown of Louise Linton's comedy (?) thriller (?), Me You Madness - a film made by someone with far too much money and far too little talent. It's part scholarly film theory analysis, part snarky nitpicking, part exasperated diatribe. We did this for our Patrons a couple of years ago. There's a LOT to hate about this film, so this is just part 1 - the rest will follow on New Year's Day, to properly set the tone for 2025. In the words of the great Cosmo Kramer, "Festivus is for those who want to escape the stress of traditional holiday cheer and embrace the absurdity of life." We seem to have really leaned into that notion. Drones, anyone? In this week's episode, we catch up with each other as the clock inches closer to Christmas—and, well, we're still not that psyched. Holly's tree is officially dead, and Jill can't seem to find the holiday spirit anywhere in LA.But what we do have is each other, and the shared memories of Christmases past, when we were a party of three. While we know Christmas will never be the same, we still have hope and trust in all the ways we continue to hear from Adam, and that gives us so much to believe in. Whether you're in the holiday spirit or want to avoid it at all costs, there's something for everyone in this week's episode. We hope you enjoy it! So, on that note: Merry Christmas! Happy Hanukkah! Happy Kwanzaa! Happy Festivus listeners! Bryan, Charles, and Marcos are feeling festive, and you all know what that means. Time for an airing of grievances! Modeled after the incredibly relevant and timely episode of Seinfeld from 1997, we share how we find tinsel too distracting, how you've all disappointed us in the last year, and finish off with the feats of strength, where we wrestle an actual bear cub before the festivities can properly begin. Or you know, we share our accomplishments over the last year in our feats of strength, share things that we have genuine grievances over, and round things off with a Festivus Miracle because we like positive endings, even when we make the theme of an episode "airing grievances." Just two more sleeps until Christmas! Oh, and Happy Festivus for the rest of us! Brian returned from vacation today & we started things off with news about the La Crosse Mayoral race, an officer-involved shooting in Chippewa County, an updated on the WI school shooting from last week, and sad news about a couple of retired K9 Officers. In sports, we recapped this weekend's NFL action & took a look ahead to tonight's MNF matchup between the Saints & Packers. Also, the Badgers got a nice win before the holiday break, an updated look at the College Football Playoff bracket after a few games this past weekend, and Tiger Woods' son is the real deal! We talked about a VERY festive pub in England, and took a look at some of Google's year-end search trends. Great story about CNN's "Hero of the Year", and a Bengals fan who won free pizza for everyone in the stadium during yesterday's game against the Browns. Mashable.com put together a list of the top Christmas horror movies of all time, and even though 2nd Floor Sarah is out, we hooked you up with a few things going on in the area this week. During today's "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a drone show that went horribly wrong, a bunch of skiers in Colorado that got stuck on a lift, a contractor in Maine who wanted just one more spin on the slot machine before being arrested, and apparently…people are putting glitter in their pickles. It a devastating fire that consumed the Sodder family home in Fayetteville, West Virginia. It's the end of 2023, and that means time for the annual Course of Life Festivus Special! First, a history lesson for those uninitiated in Festivus, a classic from Seinfeld (00:20). Festivus begins with the Airing of Grievances, including a look back at what we were upset with last year, and how pissed we are at the LIV/PGA Tour debacle this year, a horrible 8 month fiasco with insurance, and the problem with everyone on the roads not using their blinkers (1:57). The Great Feats of Strength highlight what was great about the year, including Tiger's return (again), and a certain PGA commissioner still having a job (20:38). The Festivus Miracles is what we think will happen in the sports world in 2024, including a bold and outlandish idea from Michael about the PGA/LIV partnership (31:34). While not Festivus tradition, it is a tradition to #AlwaysEndWIthFood, and that's exactly what we do here, highlighting our favorite food memories of 2023, including amazing steak in Ireland (35:28). Festivus, the holiday created by the folks on the Seinfeld TV show, is this Saturday: the TV-official day for the airing of grievances. For Donald Trump, every day is a day for the airing of grievances — and this week he had plenty of opportunity: Colorado's Supreme Court threw him off that state's ballot … for now Nearly a quarter of Trump voters say he shouldn't be the nominee if he's convicted of a felony, but another one-third want a president willing to break rules and the law if that gets the job done Trump's erstwhile attorney Rudy Giuliani files for bankruptcy after a defamation judgment that could next challenge Trump His racist statements about immigrants poisoning America ignite fires (a puzzling statement who's married not one, but two immigrants!). Also this week: Attorney General Dana Nessel has filed felony charges against state House Speaker Lee Chatfield. We'll talk with one of the reporters covering the story, Clara Hendrickson of the Detroit Free Press The Colorado decision on Trump gives more support to the case now in front of Michigan's Supreme Court to do the same in our state And a new tally of spending on roads says Governor Whitmer has put $2-billion into her promise to “fix the damn roads” during 2023. And even as we were recording the podcast, more breaking news: a federal Court of Appeals has thrown out parts of Michigan citizen-drawn legislative districts. Mark and Jeff offer their thoughts even as they read the ruling while we record! The perfect gift for the democracy lovers in your life! =========================== This episode is sponsored in part by EPIC ▪ MRA, a full service survey research firm with expertise in: • Public Opinion Surveys • Market Research Studies • Live Telephone Surveys • On-Line and Automated Surveys • Focus Group Research • Bond Proposals - Millage Campaigns • Political Campaigns & Consulting • Ballot Proposals - Issue Advocacy Research • Community - Media Relations • Issue - Image Management • Database Development & List Management ===========================
Hour 3 - Joe and Nate air their grievances of the year from around the sports world in the spirit of Festivus.
The Dallas Stars pulled off a Festivus miracle last night, so of course Stargazing needs to complain about something. Of course. Kidding, sort of – but Wes and Mark always have an eye on where the puck will be next, and they've already moved on to the next worry. In this episode, they discuss: the netminding situation, and why Jim Nill should leave it alone, the defense, and why Nill should leave that alone, too, Logan Stankoven and Mavrik Bourque, and why they probably need to be left alone, a radical plan for Radek Faksa, and much, much more. What's your least popular Stars-related opinion? Let us know at Defending Big D, or DM us @WesALawrence or @KETibbetts. We love you and your hot takes. And please, show your friends you care by sharing this episode. Give us a rate or review while you're at it. Scamper 'round the aluminum pole with us!

This week it's a celebration of Festivus...for the rest of us! Jeremy celebrates by airing his grievances from 2023 and opening the phone lines for listeners to air out theirs. Festivus is a secular holiday celebrated on December 23 as an alternative to the pressures and commercialism of the Christmas season. Originally created by author Daniel O'Keefe, Festivus entered pop culture after it was made the focus of the 1997, season 9, Seinfeld episode "The Strike". Season 2: Special Pop Song Episode: "WoodMender"What's a "WoodMender?"by David E. McCarty, MD, FAASM (but you can call me Dave)~ ~ ~ ~ ~ The musical journey of the PULMONAUTS was glorious, transformative, beautiful…but not without its friction! Think about it! All of us are professionals, at the top of our game! We all think about music slightly differently! We had to find a way to blend 10 voices, in a coordinated show, with only two practices and a dress rehearsal! Please keep in mind, dear reader: most of us in the group began as semi-rusty amateurs, trying to find our own voices within an art form that had long seemed dormant. Most of us play by ear. The fact that we all live in different states made the project seem unlikely at best, doomed at worst. But: DOOMED we were not! Far from it! The friendships we've made are bounding, beautiful things. And the show we put on positively rocked. Personally, I think that rocking vibe came from somewhere much deeper. The voice we made as a group was something new, something that all of us recognized was a product of our collaborative effort. It makes one feel like taking a deep breath.~ ~ ~ ~ ~My point here is that we all learned something along the way. We all learned how to evaluate our own prickles and rough spots, so we could work well with each other. We were able to do this, because we started with a foundation of friendship, bound with the strange fibers of choral harmony and 4:4 time. We stuck together in the name of love, and a beautiful show emerged, beyond which…lasting friendships and ongoing intellectual growth. It was while witnessing the beauty of what happens when we sand down those edges, to see the marvelous creations we can make, that I created this little poem and piece of music. May it find you in a spirit of joy, bonding and love! In the name of celebrating the light in the darkness, I wish everyone a Happy Festivus! ;)Dave McCartyBoulder, Colorado14 December 2023~ ~ ~ ~ ~ WoodMenderWritten & Recorded 29 June 2023To my PULMONAUTS...(c) 2023 Dave McCarty ~ ~ ~ ~ ~AmI am a wood-menderI build things with wood and glueStuff I make is straight and trueI'm good at what I do DI can take a fallen treeAmAnd shape the edges just like thisDSandpaper and time, you see?B.
