Grace Hills has been digging up the grass verges, planting fruit trees and increasing the biodiversity on her street, with the help of her neighbours and their children. Abi met two of the children who are part of her Flower Fairies group, where Grace teaches them to enjoy and appreciate nature, and to do plenty of planting, despite living on a suburban housing estate! If you're a gardener this is a good episode to listen to whilst you're doing some digging and planting, and if, like Abi, you appreciate nature, but don't see yourself as a gardener, we know you'll be inspired by the small steps that started Grace Hills on her guerrilla gardening journey. We also talk about being a neurodiverse Christian activist, a subject we'll return to soon! You can find Grace on Instagram @sparkingcommunityThe book she mentioned is called Get Guerrilla Gardening by Ellen Miles. You can find out more about guerrilla gardening here and there's a beginners guide here.

In today's episode I'm speaking with Ellen Miles, guerrilla gardener, activist and author. I found out about guerrilla gardening when I first met her a few months ago - in case you haven't heard of it yet, it means planting flowers and plants in public spaces in your neighbourhood, both to support biodiversity but also to reclaim those spaces and connect with your local community. I asked her a ton of questions about it so if you're curious and want to learn more about guerilla gardening, you're in the right place! She also recently wrote an entire book about it which I'll link in the show notes in case you'd like to dig even deeper (pun completely intended). The other book she wrote is called ‘Nature is a Human Right', another movement she started to advocate for more access to nature in our increasingly urbanised world. So we also spoke about this a little bit and how regular contact with nature is absolutely crucial for our health.Want to dig deeper?Read ‘Get Guerrilla Gardening' - https://www.wob.com/en-gb/books/ellen-miles/get-guerrilla-gardening/9780241593349Read ‘Nature is a Human Right' - https://www.wob.com/en-gb/books/ellen-miles/nature-is-a-human-right/9780241531358Ellen's organisation, Dream Green - https://www.dreamgreen.earth/Vital Seeds - https://vitalseeds.co.uk/Come say hi!Ellen on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/octaviachillWhy We Care on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/whywecarepodcast/Tiphaine on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/tiphainemarie_/If you enjoyed the episode and want to help the podcast, I would be super grateful if you could leave a little review or share it with a friend who might like it. Say hey to Ellen Miles. She runs Dream Green, a social enterprise on a mission to make cities greener by giving people the information, inspiration, and tools to get guerrilla gardening. Based in East London, they've provided youth groups with nature-based skills, communities with grant funding and advice, and festival-goers with messy, radical fun. Through a range of online guides, real-life workshops, and tailored one-to-one support - her plan is to inspire us all to become green fingered activists.  This summer she's spent her time touring festivals like Latitude, Boomtown and Wilderness, promoting her debut book “Get Guerrilla Gardening: A Handbook for Planting in Public Places”. It's definitely struck a chord, gaining an avid following and making her way onto the BBC, The Guardian, Gardeners World and many more. She calls it ‘Botanarchy' - beautiful anarchy challenging neo-liberal capitalist state using plants to brighten the concrete jungles we live in, preserving biodiversity while helping our cities become more resilient to global heating.  In this episode we talk about encouraging thousands of people to take ownership of their neighbourhoods, social media as a tool of next generation activism and the practical ways you can start planting in public spaces.  Enjoy.

My guest  this episode is author and activist Ellen Miles. Ellen is the founder of Nature is a Human Right, she runs Dream Green, a social enterprise that helps people get guerrilla gardening with guides, grants, and workshops and has a book that will be released this Thursday the 8th of June, Get Guerrilla Gardening: A handbook for planting in public places. Dr Ian Bedford's Bug of the Week: Spider silk What We Talk About  What is guerrilla gardening? Does it matter who owns the land you guerrilla garden? Is it illegal? Are you liable if someone trips over your planter, for example? Should we be growing more food in communities?  If you're growing food in an urban location, how can you know the soil isn't contaminated with anything that will be taken up by your plants? Who decides why a space should be used for? Where is the input from the people that live with and use guerrilla gardened spaces?  What are some potentially good sites? What are parklets? Are there spaces (such as wild spaces) that should be left alone? In order for a plant to establish either from seed or as a plant, it needs to have a degree of tenacity. Is it easy to strike a balance between finding plants that are tough enough to survive and persist and avoiding plants which can be invasive? How do you cope with practical hurdles such as no water, nowhere to store your tools, nowhere to sit down…? How do you cope with vandalism? Should you try and communicate with the local authority? If so, who and how can you best get hold of them? How do ensure a garden continues to thrive after it's established?  Other resources and people doing good work in this area About Ellen Miles Ellen Miles is an author and activist rooting for nature in urban neighbourhoods. She founded Nature is a Human Right and edited the acclaimed anthology of essays inspired by the campaign (Nature is a Human Right: Why we're fighting for green in a grey world, DK, 2022). Ellen also runs Dream Green, a social enterprise that helps people get guerrilla gardening with guides, grants, and workshops. Get Guerrilla Gardening is a joyful handbook – packed with illustrated 'how to's, inspiring stories, and photos of vibrant transformations – demystifies the art and science of planting in public places. With no prior gardening knowledge required, Get Guerrilla Gardening guides you through a straightforward, flexible action plan to suit your aims and abilities, covering everything from the legalities of guerrilla gardening, to how to choose the right plants for your patch. This week we recorded our panel discussion at Hay Festival with three outstanding writers for this podcast. Unfortunately, the Hay Festival Technical Team had a problem with our recording and could not retrieve it for us to broadcast. On the panel were Karen Armstrong, former Catholic nun and now prolific writer andcommentator on religion, Jessie Greengrass, the award-winning short story writer and novelist, and Ellen Miles, guerrilla gardener, activist and founder of the campaign Nature is a Human Right. As this was Hay, the world's best known book festival, they were of course all on the panel to talk about their books, which deal with protecting nature and our planet and fighting climate change in very different way but equally compelling ways. You can hear a very brief description of them by clicking onto the podcast. The books are Sacred Nature by Karen Armstrong, The High House by Jessie Greengrass Nature is a Human Right, Why We're Fighting for Green in a Grey World, edited by Ellen Miles, and we hope listeners will read the books, which we highly recommend. We'll be back on track next week talking to the founder and historians at the Chalke Valley History Festival. Meanwhile, on behalf of Hay Festival, we apologise again.
