The Summer season has come full circle again, that time of year where everyone enjoys being outside, especially in their gardens on a long, sunny day. Gardeners are still in full flow - planting out new beds, mowing their lawns and cajoling their vegetable gardens into burgeoning yields. It's a great time to be alive in horticulture as the show season reaches a crescendo, plant fairs almost every weekend threaten to empty your savings and open gardens throughout the UK inspire that next bit of work you will be doing in your own plot. As ever Lucy and Saul will bring you tales (and waffle) from their gardens, so join us every week for more horticultural high-jinx on Talking Heads.BBC Gardeners World Autumn Fair brings a nice closing curtain on Lucy and Saul's flower show circuit for the year, as the Talking Heads Pair sing the praises of the Walled Garden and the English Heritage team's Vegetable and Fruit Growing. The show itself is a delightful show case of late-summer colour, bulb planting and ideas to take away and extend your garden season into the Autumn. We also catch up with 'friend of the podcast' David Hurrion who's new book 'The Raised Bed Book' is translated into a wonderful garden showing the versatility and beauty of using raised beds in your garden.Instagram Links:Lucy headgardenerlcTwitter links:Saul @GardeningSaulIntro and Outro music from https://filmmusic.io"Fireflies and Stardust" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)Support the show

Spring is the time of the gardening year where all gardeners sigh with relief, it's really time to get out and about and enjoy the wonderful world of horticulture.  A garden waking up and showing its early colour and form is a wonderful space to live and work in, an it's no exception that Lucy and Saul revel in this time of year, as their gardening lives start to get busier with sowing, planting, propagation, mowing, mulching and all other gardening tasks. Sprinkle in some early flower shows and the odd plant fair and our gardening life is complete, so thank god for Spring!A favourite annual fixture in their diaries, Lucy and Saul report back from the recent BBC Gardeners' World Spring Fair, held at the beautiful gardens of Beaulieu in the New Forest. Chris Baines is one of the UK's leading independent environmentalists and an award-winning writer and broadcaster.A trained horticulturist and landscape architect, he spent some years practising and teaching landscape design but has spent most of his career a professional adviser to Government and other bodies including the National Trust, National Grid and energy regulator Ofgem.Fornerly a presenter of BBC Countryfile, his 1986 film Blue Tits and Bumblebees is often credited with starting the trend towards gardening with nature.Back in 1979 Baines bucked the trend in a chemical-driven gardening decade and created a "rich habitat garden" for Gardeners World. "At that stage, I just remember vividly...Peter [Seabrook] looking at me and saying..'you really think Britain's gardeners are going to be interested in that?' It was a supreme put down, really. And then they were absolutely avalanched with requests for the leaflet that I'd produced about how to create a rich habitat garden."With his best-selling book How to Make a Wildlife Garden continuously in print for almost 40 years, a new expanded edition was published in 2023 as an RHS classic, he reflects on where nature gardening and rewilding is today. His new book RHS Companion to Wildlife Gardening updated edition is out now. With Biodiversity Net Gain now in legislation, Baines shares his concerns: "If the outcome of the new legislation is that more creative partnership with the Wildlife Trust and others managing the investment that's required from the developers, that would be brilliant...If it finishes up with just little patches of trees planted on, in many cases, landscape, which is rather more valuable without its trees for wildlife than it will be with trees on it, then that will be a wasted opportunity. But I'm eternally optimistic."He discusses the pros and cons of bird feeding and the prospects for and importance of local parks in this election year."It's wonderful to have national parks out in the countryside, but actually most people most of the time need access to green space right where they live and work. And we need to take that much more seriously because neglect and lack of safety in those spaces puts people off going there." Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Say hey to Ellen Miles. She runs Dream Green, a social enterprise on a mission to make cities greener by giving people the information, inspiration, and tools to get guerrilla gardening. Based in East London, they've provided youth groups with nature-based skills, communities with grant funding and advice, and festival-goers with messy, radical fun. Through a range of online guides, real-life workshops, and tailored one-to-one support - her plan is to inspire us all to become green fingered activists.  This summer she's spent her time touring festivals like Latitude, Boomtown and Wilderness, promoting her debut book “Get Guerrilla Gardening: A Handbook for Planting in Public Places”. It's definitely struck a chord, gaining an avid following and making her way onto the BBC, The Guardian, Gardeners World and many more. She calls it ‘Botanarchy' - beautiful anarchy challenging neo-liberal capitalist state using plants to brighten the concrete jungles we live in, preserving biodiversity while helping our cities become more resilient to global heating.  In this episode we talk about encouraging thousands of people to take ownership of their neighbourhoods, social media as a tool of next generation activism and the practical ways you can start planting in public spaces.  Enjoy.

She managed teams that delivered collections and events across the globe. She balanced this fast-paced career with interests in well-being, working as a therapist and teaching holistic therapies, which led her to travel extensively to the USA.It was the joy of having her own garden that enabled Arit to diversify her creative experiences. She found that the visual nature of fashion and the healing properties of her therapies could beautifully meld in the garden. Playing with a new palette of colour and materials in her garden, drove her to explore the unique relationships between her love of plants, people and place.  After just one season, Arit knew she wanted horticulture to become her work as well as her pleasure. She studied gardening at Capel Manor College and whilst there had success at RHS Chelsea 2013 winning the Fresh Talent category for a student design collaboration with two other students. After attaining a diploma in garden design, she won a Gold Medal for her own design at RHS Hampton Court in 2016 in the conceptual category. In her designs for both private and commercial clients her ethos includes simplicity and environmental sensitivity – affecting her choice of products and plants at source, with regard to their future setting. Working as presenter for Gardeners World, and writing for national publications has enabled Arit to publicise issues about the future of gardening in an ever-changing climate, and promote solutions to the wider public.

Hello and welcome to episode 499 of The Veg Grower podcast! In today's episode, I'm excited to share my experience at the Gardeners World Spring Fair in Beaulieu. But before we dive into that, let's start with some updates from my allotment. Allotment update Down on the allotment I have been busy adding the final touches to the new beds, this included using a reciprocating saw to repurpose a piece of wood already on the allotment and build 2 new beds. Just in time to get planted in the next few weeks I have also been planting tomatoes and harvesting asparagus My day at the Gardeners World Spring Fair. This event is one of the most anticipated gardening shows of the year, bringing together enthusiasts from all over the world to celebrate gardening and horticulture. At the fair, I had the opportunity to meet with some incredible exhibitors, attend informative workshops, and speak with the one and only "Skinny Jean Gardener" Lee Connelly. Lee is a well-known garden expert and host of the popular podcast "The Skinny Jean Gardener Show," and it was a pleasure to talk with him about his passion for gardening and the highlights of the Spring Fair. Garden update This week in the vegetable gardens I have been concentrating on tiding my sheds, the long weekend being the ideal time for this. I have also been spending time potting in plants, pricking out seedlings and sowing many seeds including sweetcorn and beans And finally As always, I like to end each episode of The Veg Grower Podcast with a recipe featuring produce from my garden. Today's recipe features one of my favourite springtime vegetables: asparagus. Grilled Asparagus with Lemon Ingredients: 1 bunch of asparagus, trimmed 2 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp lemon juice Salt and pepper, to taste Instructions: Preheat a grill or grill pan to medium-high heat. In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Toss the asparagus in the mixture until well coated. Grill the asparagus for 5-7 minutes, turning occasionally, until lightly charred and tender. Transfer the asparagus to a serving dish and serve. This dish is simple, flavourful, and highlights the fresh and delicate flavour of asparagus. Give it a try and let me know what you think! That's it for today's episode of The Veg Grower Podcast. Thank you for tuning in and I hope you enjoyed hearing about my day at the Gardeners World Spring Fair in Beaulieu. Arit Anderson is a garden designer, writer and presenter on BBC Two's Gardeners' World. She spent 25 years working in the dynamic industries of retail fashion and creative events.

Saul Walker fell in love with horticulture through his Grandparents passion for visiting historic houses and gardens, and after a brief spell as an Archaeologist, he went to train and work as a Gardener for the National Trust at Antony House in Cornwall. After many years there he was accepted to study on the prestigious 3-year Kew Diploma of Botanical Horticulture at RBG, Kew and was exposed to the fantastic plant collections in the gardens and glasshouses, as well as travelling to Australia, Southern Spain and the French Riviera to study plants in their native habitats. Following his time at Kew he spent a couple of years as part of the Show management teams for both the RHS Hampton Court Palace and RHS Chelsea Flower Show respectively, however he was unable to resist the call back to his native Devon, where he is now the Head Gardener of Stonelands House- a privately owned 10-acre garden. Saul's speciality interests include Woodland Gardens, Orchids, and Exotic plants. A member of the RHS Tender Plant Committee and Trustee of The Hardy Plant Society and the Chartered Institute of Horticulture, he also co-hosts the Talking Heads Podcast with Lucy Chamberlain. Find out more and book tickets at bbcgardenersworldfair.com
