Sustainable growth in a turbulent landscape market, with Blakedown Landscapes

Horticulture Week Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 28, 2025 39:13

This week's guests are Chris Wellbelove (recently appointed managing director) and Steve Buckingham, CEO of Blakedown Landscapes.Blakedown just won the contract for the Queen Elizabeth garden scheme for The Royal Parks as part of their landscape construction framework. Chris outlines work being done using "environmentally sensitive construction methods" and Steve discusses some of the highlights of their work with The Royal Parks which goes back some 35 years, including the Greenwich Park Revealed scheme which won them a National BALI Award. The Outdolf Landscape project at RHS Garden Wisley won the firm another BALI Award that year and Chris talks about the pleasure of a free-flowing collaboration made possible by working with the hands-on and knowledgeable Wisley team. The pair also discuss some of the challenges faced in the landscape sector, including increased and unpredictable lead-in times for materials and plants.Chris says: "By the time we get to see it it's got a specification it's got planning permission based on a certain set of materials so for us to have much input is difficult", adding "where we are involved at earlier points we do have these discussions about 'where are you purchasing from, is it ethical, is it sustainable, is there a UK alternative?'. On plans for growth, Chris talks about how contractor design work is now part of every contract they undertake, so the firm took on Ruth Miller as a design manager to manage those design elements efficiently without disrupting the progress of the project. Andy Harris also joined as an operations manager to bolster the management team. Steve adds they are aiming for "organic growth" while looking expand activities outside their traditional territories in the South of England. Nigel Payne has also come on board to help develop Blakedown's grounds maintenance offering.Among the varied and numerous challenges thrown up in 2024, Steve says the "continually wet period" from autumn 2023 to spring 2024 was one of the hardest. And a new challenge faced by all landscape contractors is in the planning department. On the one hand, a change in pre-commencement conditions means Blakedown is being involved in signing those off after starting the contract causing delays of several weeks to commencement of works. This is exacerbated by a lack of and high turnover of overstretched planning officers, all adding to delays. "[A project] we were due to start last September, we are only getting on board now [early March]... it has a real effect on your sales forecast and your planning."Another area of growth is public realm and infrastructure improvements set in motion by the last Government's 'Levelling Up" agenda and Blakedown is embarking on a major project in to transform Canterbury's open spaces including a 'green link' to provide a safe way for pedestrians to walk around the city. Chris is inspired by how it is finding ways to "improve accessiblity but not a the cost of nature"."For the next five years it is about organic growth...We're not looking to grow hugely; we want to do what we do really well, and keep doing that." Valentine's Day and flowers go hand in hand, so what better way to celebrate than by dedicating this week's programme to the stunning blooms you can grow right in your own garden? Over the past four years, the RHS has been on a mission to find the best red roses for home gardens. We'll be revealing the top contenders with Wisley's Roz Marshall. If roses aren't your thing, Roz Chandler from Field Gate Flowers will be guiding us through the process of starting your own cut flower garden from bare earth to vase. And finally, nothing signals the arrival of spring quite like the golden explosion of daffodils! This year, the RHS is launching a nationwide appeal to track their varieties, flowering times, and distribution across the UK. We're back in the studio this week after our recent trip to The Wisley. Joe has been out testing Cobra's new LIMIT3D iron, the first fully 3D printed iron to be available at retail. Cobra launched the irons with bold claims of 'blade looks' with 'game improvement forgiveness' and Joe's testing reveled some incredible findings.  It felt fitting after chatting about the LIMIT3D iron to delve into the wider relationship between golf club manufacturing and 3D printing.  What exactly is it? What are the benefits of 3D printing when it comes to club manufacturing and prototyping? When will we see more of this? Finally, this week's WITB dives into the bag of Ludvig Åberg. The super Swede signed a deal with Titleist at the end of 2023, but his bag still holds a few secrets and pieces of Tour sauce well worth tuning in for.  As always, fell free to get in touch with Dan and Joe by dropping an email to: kickpointpodcast@futurenet.com. What she has uncovered has the potential to transform the way putting is both learned and performed. Are you going to take ACTION and become a Certified Mind Factor coach? Join us for a wonderful three days in Manchester in November Get in touch at https://themindfactor.net/the-certification-course/  The conversation will REALLY get you thinking about the way you approach your game on the greens. In our time together we looked at: The difference in brain activity just before the stroke is made between successful and unsuccessful putters. Why doubt over the ball is so detrimental to performance How this increases brain activity which then compromises your stroke Why a line on the ball may not be the most effective strategy Why practicing with putting aids and gadgets can be of limited value The role of the eyes in supplying information for your putt The value of ‘quiet eye' Busy eyes make for a bust brain How to train to then perform Why you shouldn't just keep hitting putt after putt when you are training   This is a really refreshing and far reaching conversation that could potentially apply to the whole of your game A lot of what Laura and Caesar had to say resonated with many of the ideas presented by Gary Nicol and myself in the Lost Art of Putting Caesar Bayliss has been a PGA professional for over 20 years and specializes in putting. He coaches at The Wisley and other venues across the UK  Dr Laura Carey is a Lecturer at the University of the West of Scotland and a HCPC-registered Practitioner Psychologist. Climate resilient gardens are a feature of this month's Chelsea Flower Show, but how can the experts help the typical British gardener prepare for the future? To find out, botanist James Wong asks whether the way we garden could protect us against the effects of climate change, and if we can protect our gardens against more unpredictable weather patterns? James joins Chelsea designer Tom Massey as he chooses plants for a mould breaking show garden. He learns tips for dealing with more unpredictable conditions at the Royal Horticultural Society's flagship Wisley garden, and from climate savvy gardener Kim Stoddart in West Wales. In the heart of London, amid the brutalist concrete of the Barbican centre, James meets Professor Nigel Dunnett, and considers how plants could make human habitats more liveable during heatwaves and heavy rain. This week, we're exploring the afterlife of plants. We're looking at what happens when we remove different plant material from our gardens – either parts of flora still growing or others long dead – and preserve or display them as they were then, frozen at a particular stage of their life cycle. Flower farmer and author Rachel Siegfried shares her secrets on growing perennials and woody plants for cut flowers, Tivvy Harvey and Lydia Walles take us into the inner sanctum of Wisley's herbarium, and then horticulturist Mark Tuson shows us the ornamental structures he's made from pine cones and dried flowers. Finally, Fiona Davison, Head of Libraries and Exhibitions at the RHS, takes us away from dead plants and into the world of dead insects. She'll help uncover a piece of the RHS's rich history, giving us an inside look at the life and legacy of entomologist George Fox Wilson.  Links: The Cut Flower Sourcebook RHS Herbarium  How to dry flowers and foliage The Old Laboratory
