At a time when Europe faces a "baby bust," the role of children in public spaces is sparking new debate. Increasingly, restaurants, hotels, and even tour operators are rolling out “adults only” policies. Gone are the sounds of crying babies or kids running around tables, but this shift raises questions about individualism in society. In recent years, child-free options have doubled globally, with hotels and restaurants seeing a surge in demand for adult-only spaces. In the UK, chains like Warner Leisure Hotels are dedicated entirely to adult-only stays, reflecting a significant shift in hospitality preferences. Is this trend really that widespread? Is it even legal? Isn't it discriminating against part of the population? Why is this trend picking up steam now? What does this mean for society? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! In today's episode, Niall dives into the proposed UK laws banning smoking in outdoor spaces and asks, should Ireland follow suit? He speaks with Adrian Cummins from the Restaurant Association and Paul Tryvaud of Tryvaud's Restaurant in Killarney to explore how this potential ban could impact the hospitality industry. The UK government, led by Sir Keir Starmer, is considering tougher outdoor smoking rules to reduce preventable deaths linked to tobacco. While health experts welcome the move, concerns are emerging from ministers and business owners about its effect on pubs and restaurants. We also hear a range of opinions from callers—some arguing it's a case of nanny state laws, while others support the ban for public health reasons. Tune in for a lively discussion on this controversial issue.

On our latest weekly roundup, a delicious fundraiser benefitting the library where Catherine works prompted us to talk about clever ways to solicit donations (and how involved parents get in the process). What we're watching: We started Netflix's Ripley, a series based on the 1999 movie The Talented Mr. Ripley, with episodes 1 ("A Hard Man to Find") and 2 ("Seven Mercies"). In the series, the characters are aged up and the color is drained out for a you-can't-miss-it moodiness. We didn't love it (listen in to hear why) but we'll keep going.Catherine's library find this week is from the quirky nonfiction category: Dogland: Passion, Glory and Lots of Slobber at the Westminster Dog Show by Tommy Tomlinson. It's a perfect audiobook for Terri, except she'll miss out on pictures of doggies. In the archives, we revisit episodes in which we discussed kids in public places (May 10, 2023), gestures of generosity (May 9, 2022), and what we'd do with villa-in-Italy riches (May 12, 2016). Mentioned: Best in Show; "Craig" by Walker Hayes.Next week, we'll watch the next two episodes of Ripley, “Sommerso” and “La Dolce Vita.” Until then (and anytime you're in need), the archives are available.

Yesterday's news was a firehydrant, and most of it pretty alarming. The corrupt husk we're pretending is president with more evidence of selling out the country for financial gain surfacing, leading right to his literal front door.
