Christopher Hatton is a writer-director-producer based in Singapore.  His work ranges from sci-fi to drama to action to animation. He's created projects in North America, the U.K., Europe and Asia.  He recently completed writing, directing, and producing Raven's Hollow, an ambitious period thriller based on events in the life of a young Edgar Allan Poe.   I've seen Raven's Hollow and can tell you it's a terrifically entertaining, beautifully rendered, quite eerie mystery-horror-thriller. Some of Christopher's other credits include Battle of the Damned with Dolph Lundgen, the robots-gone-berserk thriller Robotropolis, Cyber Wars with genre legend David Warner, Phantom Racer, and the first draft screenplay for what would become Shanghai Noon, among many others. Christopher earned an MFA in Playwriting from the University of Iowa where he took time out from writing plays to submit an unsolicited spec script to Star Trek: The Next Generation, which wound up being produced as a two-part episode.  This was immediately followed by the sale of a pitch to Star Trek, which brought him to Los Angeles where he secured an agent and never wrote a stage play again.

“Wednesday, for us, from concept until now, has been a three and a half year journey,” said Alfred Gough. “We came up with the initial idea which was teenage Wednesday Addams in boarding school. We had to track down the rights and then we pitched it to the Addams Foundation.” As screenwriters, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar are known for Shanghai Noon, Smallville, I Am Number Four, Spider-Man 2 (2004), and Into the Badlands. Their latest creation is perhaps most similar to the creation of Smallville, the Superman origin series. Listen to our conversation about Into the Badlands in Episode 52. Miles Millar said, “Tonally, this is in the pocket of Smallville. Often times, the studio comes to you, but this time, it was our idea. We put together a 15-page series treatment with photographs, descriptions, log lines for episodes, and that led to a meeting. We had to do the legwork, write the spec treatment, but we felt passionate about the project and fell in love with the idea of doing this.” “From there, we wrote the first episode, that's when the pandemic hit. We sent the pilot script to Tim Burton's agent, even though his agent said he's never been interested in television,” he continued, “but the agent liked it and sent it to Tim. Four days later, we got a call, he loved it and wanted to meet.” Tim Burton told Alfred Gough and Miles Millar that he “loved the script” and “would have dated Wednesday Addams in high school.” They shot the series in Romania about a year later. It's time for a double feature! A Wild West double feature! One of my favorite action/buddy-cop/bromance series from my children, the Shanghai series has always been a joy for me and the bromances in my life. Owen Wilson is feathery-blonde and charming, and Jackie Chan is hilarious and full of stunt set pieces; easily set alongside Rush Hour as the top of Chan's buddy-cop collection of films. This time, we're headed to Nevada to save the princess, and learn a little bit more about ourselves along the way. How has the indigenous peoples' presentation within the film aged in twenty-two years? Are Gough and Millar a brainstorming genius team of comedy script writers? I don't know! In our lead up to International Podcast Day, I was lucky enough to sit down with an accomplished, actor, writer, director, and most recently, podcaster in Matthew Currie Holmes. MCH, as he's known, started the Couch Trip Cinema podcast so he could share his experiences in film, along with his guests perspectives regarding their time and work in the film industry. Such esteemed guests of his have included Brea Grant, Gavin Michael Booth, and Chelsea Stardust, and he assures me that there are some very exciting guests in the future as well.  But what about MCH himself? Well, his resume reads like a best of list; he started out in Canada as a PA working on films like Shanghai Noon, and from there things really blossomed for Holmes. He went on to land roles in films like Wrong Turn 2 and The Fog before he really found his passion in screenwriting and directing. His debut feature film, The Curse of Buckout Road was released in late 2019, and has been the recipient of numerous awards.  So today the tables have been turned on the incredible MCH, and he gets to share his insights and stories about the film industry, and what it's like to have a podcast of his own. Despite his thinking I was going to edit this interview down, I just couldn't. Everything he has to say is interesting and full of passion, but you'll just have to listen for yourself. It's a good'n.
