The Book of Enoch (Chapters 17-36): Enoch's Journey, Seeing Hades & The Garden of Eden by Shawn Ozbun
We have all heard the story of Adam and Eve. But what was the Garden of Eden which they inhabited? In this week's episode, Helen and Lloyd travel back to the dawn of time with Dr Dylan Johnson as their guide to this mythical landscape. Together, they get to the bottom of questions like:Was the Garden of Eden meant to be a real place, or a symbolic vision of paradise? Is Genesis borrowing from older Mesopotamian stories about divine gardens? Was Adam imagined as a king placed in God's garden to rule on his behalf? Is Eve really to blame for “the fall,” or is that a misreading? And who exactly is the serpent, before later tradition identified him with Satan?SUPPORT BIBLICAL TIME MACHINEIf you enjoy the podcast, please (pretty please!) consider supporting the show through the Time Travellers Club, our Patreon. Imagine a group of ancient humans, crafting stone tools at the dawn of humankind. What did these creatures look like? To find out, we can stare at the skulls in museums or glance at reconstructions made by paleo-artists. Not a bad start. But what if we move the lens and zoom into their surroundings? What was the scientific “Garden of Eden” like? Was it a lush forest, a dry savanna, or an icy cave? And what can the answer tell us about human nature more broadly?Denise Su is a world-leading expert on these questions. A paleoecologist at Arizona State University's Institute of Human Origins, she uses ever-more imaginative ways to get a glimpse into the nature and the weather that set the stage for the human story. In this episode, we focus on two kinds of “changes” in the ecology of human evolution: both the actual climate change that drummed the beat of human origins, and the theoretical changes in the views of scientists thinking about these topics. Indeed, this episode digs deep into one of the hotly contested questions about the reasons why humans evolved: "the savanna hypothesis".According to the savanna hypothesis, our naked, upright species evolved because African forests were shrinking and dry savannas emerged instead. Other apes stayed in the shrinking forests, but our brave ancestors took the shot, conquering the vast flatlands. As they did so, they started standing upright to better walk on the savanna and lost their fur, to sweat away the heat of the scorching sun. I have told versions of this story on the show, and so have many senior guests. Yet even a brief Google search will give you plenty of critics telling that the savanna hypothesis is nothing but a convenient myth. Articles by Denise Su are often included in the evidence. So what's going on? Listen to the episode to find out! TIMELINE Last common ancestor with humans and chimpanzees: 6–7 million years ago Ardipithecus ramidus: 4.5–4.2 million years ago Australopithecus anamnesis: 4.2–3.8 million years ago Austrolopithecus afarensis (e.g. Lucy): 3.9–2.9 million years ago Australopithecus deyiremeda: 3.5–3.3 million years ago Earliest Homo: about 2.8 million years ago Homo erectus: 1.9 million–112,000 years ago Homo sapiens: 300,000 years ago till present FACT-CHECKINGNo factual errors have been detected so far. However, timing estimates and species names are still debated. Furthermore, the “hours” in the metaphorical clock can shift a fair amount based on the “midnight”: our last common ancestor with chimpanzees lived 6 to 7 million years ago, with some estimates pushing the date as far as 8 million. Tom Newman discusses the New You, a concept that is unique to all Service Members. He also discusses the effects of MST (Military Sexual Trauma) and the newest statistics regarding this issue. Operation HighGround Operation HighGround is a nonprofit organization that seeks to reach out to the most unreachable veterans who may not be interested in accepting help for themselves, but who would proudly jump at an opportunity to help other veterans. Operation HighGround is unique … not only in the method of involving our homeless veterans, but in the way we engage our sponsors, providing a win-win approach for all. We seek to improve and re-purpose existing state or federal sites that may currently be under-utilized. We are prepared to use vacant land for modular housing in cases where government-owned buildings are not readily available. The veterans are taught skills by working on the reparation or building of living quarters, which is then used for medium- to longer-term transitional housing. We partner with other established organizations to assist with the screening and treatment of issues for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder or chemical dependency issues. Our sponsors assist in providing job opportunities for the newly trained veterans. This program also assists with the reintegration of veterans and their families. Visit Operation HighGround

Discernment about our times is critical for the Church. It helps prepare our hearts and lives for the fulfilment of the prophecy Jesus talked about throughout His ministry. Matthew 24 is a good example of knowing when these things will happen, and for the Church to keeping watching and praying until Jesus returns. In this episode, Pastor Walt McFadden talks about some of issues we face today in the Church. The readings for this homily: https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/022226.cfmFather Chris Alar, MIC, invites us to reconsider the Genesis story in light of both tradition and modern discoveries. He notes that scientific genealogy now points to a single ancestral woman, reinforcing the plausibility that Adam and Eve were actual historical persons. He stresses that the biblical account employs symbolic language to convey theological truth, not to serve as a scientific textbook. The garden, he explains, symbolizes the state of grace—a divine communion that humanity originally shared with the Father. By locating the entrance of Eden to the east, the ancient tradition connects the garden with the tabernacle and the Holy of Holies, the most sacred space where God dwelt among his people.Father Chris distinguishes the two creation narratives, showing that one offers a chronological outline while the other provides a vivid visual metaphor of God shaping man from the earth. He reiterates that humanity is a unique composite of matter and spirit, endowed with a rational, immortal soul that separates us from animals. The episode of the tree of knowledge, according to Fr. Chris, is less about acquiring moral awareness and more about the tragic attempt to seize God's legal authority over good and evil—a theme that mirrors contemporary attempts to legislate morality.Father Chris also links the garden imagery to the Church's Sacramental life, describing the tabernacle as a miniature Eden where the Holy of Holies resides. He reminds listeners that the Sacraments are the ordinary channels through which God continues to offer the grace first granted in Eden. By understanding these layers, we can love our faith more deeply and recognize that the Our Father, the Mass, and the Sacraments are extensions of that original divine intimacy.During this Lenten season, Fr. Chris encourages the faithful to use the disciplines of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving to enter more fully into the mystery of Eden, allowing the heart to be transformed by the same grace that first animated Adam. ★ Support this podcast ★

Part II of my year-end review of pop music across 2025 tackles Selena Gomez & Benny Blanco's 'I Said I Love You First,' Miley Cyrus with 'Something Beautiful,' and Demi Lovato's 'It's Not That Deep.' All three acts shared similar experiences in the earlier halves of their music careers, and this episode discusses the parallels shared between these artists in 2025. For Selena Gomez, I'll be diving into the couples branding behind her work with Benny Blanco, and how both the singles and campaign may be a mismatch for the album's core. On 'It's Not That Deep,' I'll be going through the recent album and how the singles may have prevented the album from reaching its full potential, and how Demi's dance effort is her most ambitious to date. Plus, how does Miley's new album stack up next to 'Can't Be Tamed,' 'She Is Coming,' 'Endless Summer Vacation,' or 'Plastic Hearts?' Let me know your thoughts as well.

Kicking off my chronological review of pop music across 2025 with Tate McRae's 'So Close To What' & Lady Gaga's 'MAYHEM.' Both artists kicked off in Q1 with some of the years most defining albums, and in this episode I'm breaking down the strengths and weaknesses of both projects in reference to the specific artists catalog, and the grand scheme of pop music at large. Plus, I'll be diving into the campaigns surrounding each album and how they tie to both longevity, public narrative, and their own Grammy chances. Did these albums hold up after months? Did the campaigns promoting the album help the artists reach their potential? I'll also be giving a special shoutout to another great Q1 project, which is 'SALVATION' by Rebecca Black.
Alarming Urban Home Invasion: Venomous Brown Snake in Canberra — Jeremy Zakis — Zakis reported on a concerning home invasion in Canberra involving a highly venomous great eastern brown snake, one of Australia'sdeadliest species. The family discovered the dangerous reptile in their residential hallway; the snake subsequently relocated to the toilet bowl, effectively trapping itself and facilitating safe capture. Experts characterized this unusual urban behavior as potentially symptomatic of snakes seeking cooler refuge as ambient temperatures rise during Australian summer, suggesting climate-driven habitat displacement. 1916 GARDEN OF EDEN
