Edie first rose to prominence when the band's debut album, Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars was released in 1988 and was certified double platinum on the strength of the hit single “What I Am.” As of 2021, Edie Brickell and New Bohemians have released five studio albums. In addition to her work with the band and three solo albums, Edie has collaborated with Harper Simon as The Heavy Circles, with Steve Gadd and others as the Gaddabouts, and more recently, with the band Heavy Makeup. Notably, she has recorded two studio albums and one live album with Steve Martin, and the pair collaborated on the Broadway musical Bright Star. In addition to her other various musical projects, Brickell tours with her husband Paul Simon, for whom Matt Chamberlain plays drums. Chamberlain has recorded extensively with his jazz fusion band Critters Buggin, but has also been part of the Floratone Jazz Collective with Bill Frissell, formed the grunge supergroup Painted Shield with Stone Gossard and Mason Jennings, and released an album with Sean Watkins of Nickel Creek. As a drummer he has toured and/or recorded with Pearl Jam, Tori Amos, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Brandi Carlile, Fiona Apple, Soundgarden, and many others. This year, Brickell and Chamberlain launched World Famous Pets, a project that was born from improvisation. The group's self-titled debut album was just released on September 25th. Brands, author of America First: Roosevelt vs. Lindbergh in the Shadow of War, Part One: In April 1939, world-famous aviator Charles Lindbergh returns to the United States as global tensions escalate. Lindbergh, who moved to Europe following the "trial of the century" regarding his son's kidnapping, admires German technical proficiency but is deeply skeptical of British endurance. President Franklin Roosevelt attempts to co-opt Lindbergh into his administration to control his influence, but Lindbergh refuses, fiercely guarding his independence. When war erupts in Europe, Lindbergh uses his celebrity status to broadcast radio appeals for neutrality, believing American intervention would repeat the "mistake" of World War I. Meanwhile, Roosevelt maneuvers to modify the Neutrality Act and shift public opinion toward supporting Britain. Lindbergh views the fall of France as vindication for staying out of the conflict, while FDRuses the international emergency to justify a historic third term, a move Lindbergh fears will lead to a "presidency for life." Sabina shares her experience of losing her mother at a young age and how that shaped the person and artist she would become. H.W. Brands describes how in April 1939, Charles Lindbergh returned to the United States as a world-famous celebrity, greeted by "a football team of flashbulbs popping" as he disembarked a transatlantic steamer. Lindbergh had remained in the global spotlight since his historic 1927 solo flight across the Atlantic, a feat of technical proficiency and bravery comparable to the moon landing. His return was prompted by the imminent threat of war in Europe, a situation he had observed firsthand while living in England to escape the "paparazzi" following the tragic kidnapping and murder of his infant son. While Lindbergh admired German culture and technical organization, he was puzzled and dismayed by the rise of the Nazi party. He viewed the British as complacent, believing they were clinging to a 19th-century empire while imposing unrealistic peace terms on Germany that they refused to enforce. Lindbergh predicted that if war broke out, Britain would inevitably look to the United States for a "bailout," just as they had during World War I. Upon his arrival in Washington, he was beckoned to meet President Franklin Roosevelt, who sought to co-opt the celebrated aviator into the administration. Roosevelt recognized Lindbergh's deep knowledge of global military aircraft and his massive public following, fearing he would become a powerful voice for neutrality. However, Lindbergh, jealous of his independence and skeptical of Roosevelt's charm, declined the offer, refusing to be "inside the tent" where he could be controlled. (1)1930
