Benedikt Frey (@freybenedikt) has been on a journey of musical adventure and exploration over the last 15 years. He has made everything from deepest house to bottomless dub, UK jungle to irresistible edits of Notorious BIG. Those early forays came on labels like Nous'klaer Audio and Hivern Discs but in the years since the German has looked more to industrial and post-punk for inspiration. His Fastlane album on ESP Institute this summer blended those vibes with his own take on techno and resulted in his most accomplished and singular work yet. Now, the Lopasura label head steps up with an extra special two-hour mix that peers into the farthest corners of his sound. It is the sort of all-consuming trip that plays out like a mind movie as it works through serval different chapters - some heady and deep, some direct and unsettling, always with great control. Whether laying down electro, wave, techno or serious bass weight, Benedikt Frey is always taking you somewhere new.

Recs Ahead of this forthcoming release, we welcome Trent to the Clandestino podcast where he delivers an hour of eclectica which really makes us miss the dance floor. https://soundcloud.com/lucatrent

Radio Muse, le programme de découvertes musicales européennes sur les radio Campus. This is the 10th edition of RadioMuse, this time from Radio Orange 94.0 in Vienna, Austria. For our broadcast we met with three exponents of the thriving Viennese underground scene, talking with Paul Ebhart and Florian Stöffelbauer in the first part of the show. Paul is active as a Dj and musician under various aliases, connecting the dots between experimental electronics, wave and techno old and new. Together with Florian he was organising the infamous "Basic Rhythm" parties in Vienna, soon extending into a Youtube channel of the same name, where they present the music they love and feel most. Florian is co-founder of "Neubau Records" and sublabel "Wiener Brut". As a producer he released records under his "Heap" alias on labels like ESP Institute or Berceuse Heroique. On top he is also running the record store / mail order "Discus Throwers" based in the Neubau district of Vienna. In the second part of our feature we met with Natascha Muhič, who is one of the cathalysts in the Vienna scene. With one foot in fine arts and another firmly based in music, she is involved in countless projects, organizing events, playing music, Djing, label-work.. you name it. Like Paul and Florian, Natascha is also well connected beyond Austria's local scene and part of a vital, exchanging community of artists in a wide variety of genres and fields. In our talk she will also tell us about her amazing project Vinylograph, a vinyl cutting machine she built together with Christoph Freidhöfer and that is used as a base for her lathe-cut vinyl label of the same name.

Rounding off a busy week we have a showcase in hard hitting electronics and the experimental from one of our favourite producers of the moment, Koehler. Originating from Bristol but now based in Italy he has released an impressive array of material for the likes of Whities, ESP Institute, Berceuse Heroique, Skude, Die Orakel and many more. His take on dance music is perhaps more abstract than most, utilising rough and ready soundscapes and layering the strange above driving percussion which has a profound and punchy impact on the dancefloor. It's powerful stuff. He is influenced by circumstance and there is a conceptual undercurrent which runs deep through his musical lineage. One that we love. We invited Daniel to record a mix for the site and he didn't hold back. Trust us.

Cleveland bridges many different musical divides. He is a DJ, producer and party promoter from Luxembourg but based in Brussels, and in all those disciplines likes to focus more on mood and texture than specific genres. He has a sound that is thought provoking and complex but never too academic, and has explored the deeper, more synth heavy end of the dance spectrum onlabels like Hivern Discs, WHITE and ESP Institute. Across ninety minutes here he offers up lovably loose grooves that range from musical and lavish to more heads down and propulsive. Tripped out house bleeds into twisted techno and floating ambient laced grooves drift next to minimal classics, all in the sort of story telling fashion that also defines his excellent shows on Red Light Radio. Heady yet engaging, Cleveland's sound is very much deserving of your attention.
Up this week is the Brooklyn resident who is one of those DJs and producers who seem synonymous with New York City, brandishing a stellar discography that holds credits for labels such as Golf Channel, DFA, Throne Of Blood, Eric Duncan’s Keep It Cheap and ESP Institute. Justin currently runs the My Rules record imprint, where he has a hand in the production of every release. The label not only provides a platform for all his recent solo outings but also offers a stylistically broad range of releases: from his remixes of the likes of dance music heavyweight Todd Terje to Japanese new-wave group The Creams. He's supplied us with a Disco special mix this week, so polish off your mirror ball and get stuck in! Artist: @justin-van-der-volgen https://www.facebook.com/justinvandervolgen/
Brussels-based sound architect Cleveland has been releasing intricately spaced-out productions via Hivern Discs and ESP Institute for years. We celebrate his recent nDSI EP with a propulsive and textured mix. After that, it is the ascendant Norwegian-Algerian producer and DJ Karima F. Her Schloss imprint is in full-swing, with forthcoming music from Hunter Lombard and A Psychic Yes. She also has forthcoming features for Smalltown Supersound, Uncanny Valley, and Kornél Kovács' Puss in the works. Her mix for us heads straight to the jungle. Austrian music obsessive Heap is someone who always digs deep into the past, but also the present. His empire includes Discus Throwers, which is a concept store that deals in special gems from the world of house, techno, synth pop and kraut, as well as his Neubau label, productions on labels like ESP Institute and Berceuse Heroique and DJ sets that can be brave and beguiling or banging and brash. For this week’s mix, Heap keeps it deep with a selection of leggy and gently cosmic disco tracks early on. His is a thoughtful take on the genre, with expansive tracks that could be brand new or 30 years old all sitting nearly next to each other. As things grower darker and more intense later on, elements of acid, electro and proto-house all make for a colourful and late night trip.

Jonny Rock knows how to entertain any sort of dance floor. The Worldwide FM radio host runs Turkish focussed labels Hamam House and Disco Hamam and has very much driven the renewed focus in Eastern music as a result. His record collection is a treasure trove of knowledge when it comes to unusual scenes and sounds and will put anyone’s to shame. He has held residences at places as diverse as Classic at The End, Key at Phonica and Herbal, and his own productions take in whatever he wants, be it house on The Nothing Special or techno on ESP Institute. There is no holding back over the course of his podcast, which gets straight to business with some wild breakbeat action. All forms of house from jacked up to deep, celebratory to acid then get seamlessly linked together into something that feels very much informed by the past but in no way a slave to the classics. It’s the sound of a man who very much knows what he’s doing in top form.

Florian Stöffelbauer digs deep. Not one to bow to trends and fanciful fads he knows his shit. Real abstract electronics for the clubs and dancefloors with a twist. The Discus Throwers founder has worked tirelessly for years showcasing the best in raw, rugged, forward thinking music and has used his shop to help push and promote up and coming artists unafraid to experiment and challenge. Discus Throwers has long been regarded as a reliable outlet for cutting edge material... However, it was not until he joined forces with Simon Heidemann to launch the Neubau label that things really began to escalate fast... Now an imprint of distinct consistency and dependability he has aided in the release of music by the likes of Leo James, Aufgang B, Mr Ho and more. Then there is his own musical affair - collaborations on ESP Institute and edits on Berceuse Heroique. Heap is a champion..
On the cusp of his imminent new EP for our good friends Not An Animal Records it's a pleasure to have Ian Blevins on the series this week. His 'The Birds' EP features a storming debut remix from Man Power's new alias Tropical Bastard. Ian quietly honed his craft for years at We Love... in Ibiza, which has since allowed him a global touring schedule and a steady stream of well received releases on ESP Institute, Futureboogie, Banoffee Pies, Culprit and more. Over to you Ian...

As you would expect of someone called Lovefingers, American DJ and producer Andrew Hogge has a very special touch when it comes to making, playing and releasing emotionally involving, blissed out music. Hailing from LA, he runs the magical ESP Institute label and is also half of The Stallions as well as being a self-proclaimed hippie. That always comes through in the organic, loved up music he works with, and visual aesthetics always seem just as important to him as musical ones. The romantic and intoxicating mix he serves up is dedicated to Red Light Records owner Tako Reyenga and Mule Musiq affiliate Kuniyuki Takahashi. It is a loose-limbed, love-fuelled and fully horizontal delight made up of underlapping grooves, oriental motifs and gluey pads. The second half touches on more physical drums but also offers up yet more heavenly ambiance, bird song and jumbled percussion that will have you reaching for your shades and dreaming of summer.
Interview with @jonnynash: http://www.melbournedeepcast.net/portfolio/jonny-nash/ "The mix was recorded in the UK a few weeks ago.. It's a selection of new stuff that I have been enjoying.. If my memory serves me correctly there are tracks from Alter Ego, Suzanne Kraft, Maizena and the Regelbau crew.. oh yeah, and also a Tambien remix of my “Land of Light” project that has just come out on ESP Institute."
One more year, lots of new favourites. Once again UV Funk host Philipp asked a lot of Dresden-based and mostly UV-related DJs and artists to comment on their biggest tune of the year. As in recent years the show gathers a fine collection of songs from Afro via House through to Ambient. This year it seems as some guys are pretty much into adding affects. 01.
