Tripped-out excursions through percussive club music with the Nowadays resident. Ayesha Chugh, AKA Ayesha, makes club music that activates the body. The Brooklyn-based artist has spent the last few years carving out a distinct lane in modern club music. Her fusion of dubstep, techno and essential '90s rave elements into dynamite club tools that test and support dancers in equal measure. This time though, for her RA Podcast, Chugh purposefully tilts in a "more colorful wonky direction." Since first turning heads with releases on labels like Fever AM and Kindergarten Records, she's continued to refine a sound that feels both playful and punishing, marked by writhing basslines, rumbling drums and an innate ability to make bodies move. Her productions capture a kind of kinetic precision—tracks that are slippery yet forceful, balancing psychedelic textures with dubstep-like physicality and club-focused power. As Andrew Ryce wrote of her debut, Rhythm is Memory, her skill is "full of textures that wrap around the otherwise thudding, sub-heavy kick drums." After a serious accident in 2024 stopped her in her tracks, this year marks a full return to global touring with a new vantage point on life and the sound she seeks to push. RA.983, clocking in at nearly two and a half hours, finds Chugh flexing that club muscle once again. Offering a tour through global club music both old and new, it's based around a set at her home base Nowadays this February. It's a patient but relentless ride: from deep, tunneling psytrance, progressive techno and slippery electro before really turning on the gas at the half mark, moving into slanted UK techno territory. As she explains in the Q&A, it's a carefully curated selection of tracks that probes "what we perceive as tasteful." It's a mix that speaks to her deep knowledge of dance music's lineage—and her intuitive ability to push it forward. @aye5ha Find the interview and tracklist at ra.co/podcast/983

We start this episode with an interview of Amanda Moore, freelance journalist specializing in exposing the far right in the USA, as she alerts us to how the normally difficult life of freelance reporting is being made all the more tenuous by the incoming Trump Administration - even before inauguration! Next, we head to SCOTUS, where the Justices have cleared the way for Hawaii to continue their lawsuit against Big Oil for their decades of greenwashing propaganda. Then, we go over the new and comprehensive report that Biden's Department of Justice just released on the over-100-year-old Tulsa Race Massacre. Unlike the first DoJ report from 1921, this 126 page report goes over every crime committed upon the Greenwood community of Tulsa during that horrific event. Finally, tryptophan, the amino acid that is associated with getting sleepy, snuck in during our nap and upset how we envisioned the beginning of life on Earth. All this and more on TMI for Friday, January 17, 2025 – listen in for YOUR Cure for the Common Media!

Today Justin talks with Norman Ohler. Norman is a best selling novelist, a journalist, and a screenwriter. He's written three novels, which comprise the City Trilogy, and while working in the West Bank in 2004, he interviewed Yasser Arafat in what turned out to be the final interview of his life before he passed away in November of that year. He's also the author of the non fiction book Blitzed: Drugs in Nazi Germany, published in English in 2016. In this episode he discusses his newest book, Tripped: Nazi Germany, the CIA, and the Dawn of the Psychedelic Age, which was published earlier this year. Norman built on his previous research here to cover post-war efforts to control narcotics in occupied Germany and the rise of psychedelic drugs, both within the populace and as potential tools for interrogation and mind control by the world's intelligence agencies.Connect with Norman:normanohler.comIG: @normanohlerCheck out Tripped here.https://amzn.to/3Nshgw5Connect with Spycraft 101:Get Justin's latest book, Murder, Intrigue, and Conspiracy: Stories from the Cold War and Beyond, here.spycraft101.comIG: @spycraft101Shop: shop.spycraft101.comPatreon: Spycraft 101Find Justin's first book, Spyshots: Volume One, here.Check out Justin's second book, Covert Arms, here.Download the free eBook, The Clandestine Operative's Sidearm of Choice, here.Support the show
Hurricane Milton is approaching Florida's west coast and is expected to make landfall Wednesday night or early Thursday morning. Here in Minnesota, there is special attention on the storm because so many Minnesotans now live there or have a second vacation home there. For the past few days, hundreds of thousands of people have evacuated their homes, clogging hotels and highways to get out of the path of the hurricane. One of them is St. Paul resident Tim Dykstal. Tim lives in Minnesota, but drove down to Florida to stay in a shared family condo and play golf in Palm Harbor, about a mile inland from the coast. He left the condo and is taking shelter in a hotel to ride out the storm. MPR News host Cathy Wurzer talks with him.

In this episode, Joe interviews Norman Ohler: award-winning novelist, screenwriter, and journalist. Following in the footsteps of Blitzed: Drugs in the Third Reich, his newest book, Tripped: Nazi Germany, the CIA, and the Dawn of the Psychedelic Age, tells the story of how the Nazi's passion for methamphetamine turned into a curiosity about LSD, and how their experiments with trying to harness LSD as a truth drug eventually led to the CIA continuing their research under their MKUltra program. The book came about from trying to understand why LSD never became medicine – a question posed by his father, when discussing how LSD could help with his wife's progressing Alzheimer's symptoms. He discusses: His path to becoming a “gonzo historian” and how his early psychedelic research was inspired by a friend's discovery of methamphetamine tablets from the 40s Henry Beecher's LSD experiments with students at Harvard, and how researchers often didn't know they were contributing to MKUltra His recent appearances on The Joe Rogan Experience and Jesse Watters Primetime His mother's experience with microdosing LSD and why police showed up at his father's door with a warrant Why he believes psychedelics will be legalized in the U.S. in the next 10 years and more! Norman Ohler's latest work, "Tripped: Nazi Germany, the CIA, and the Dawn of the Psychedelic Age," delves into the shadowy history of LSD, tracing its origins from the laboratories of Nazi Germany to its pivotal role in shaping U.S. drug policy through the CIA's MKUltra program. This book explores how the Nazis' initial interest in psychedelics for mind control evolved into a tool for psychological warfare, eventually influencing America's stance on psychedelic drugs during the Cold War. Ohler's meticulous research uncovers the hidden connections between these historical adversaries, revealing how the quest for a 'truth serum' and mind control techniques not only delayed therapeutic psychedelic research but also laid foundational elements for the War on Drugs. "Tripped" continues Ohler's theme of examining history through the lens of substance use, offering a provocative narrative that challenges conventional historical narratives and highlights the profound impact of drug policy on societal development. They discuss the history of pharmaceuticals and the early research on LSD, including its origins in Nazi Germany and its use by the American military and intelligence agencies. The negative consequences of the war on drugs and the need for a more responsible approach to substances are highlighted. The potential benefits of microdosing LSD and its effects on mental health are explored. LSD was explored by the CIA as a potential truth serum and mind-control tool, but it did not meet their expectations. LSD can provide therapeutic benefits when used in a controlled and supportive environment, allowing individuals to gain insights into themselves and the world around them. The CIA's involvement with LSD led to its spread in the cultural scene, particularly during the 1960s and 70s, where it became associated with the anti-war movement. The American government made LSD illegal due to its popularity and perceived threat to their war plans, but illegal LSD chemists continued to supply the substance. LSD has shown promise in reducing neuroinflammation and enhancing neuroplasticity, making it a potential treatment for neurodegenerative diseases. The rejection of psychedelic medicines by regulatory bodies like the FDA is seen as a hindrance to progress and a reflection of the influence of pharmaceutical companies. The erosion of democracy and the current political climate are seen as obstacles to the psychedelic revolution that could lead to positive societal change. The little-known story of how Nazi experiments into psychedelics covertly influenced the CIA and shaped the foundation of America's war on drugs has been told in the new book by best-selling author Norman Ohler. Following on from the themes in his 2015 book Blitzed, which looked at methamphetamine use by the Third Reich, new book Tripped examines how the Nazis experimented with LSD at Dachau in efforts to find a "truth serum". When the US liberated Germany, they discovered the research which led to the CIA's notorious brainwashing and psychological torture program of the 1950s and 1960s. Only now is LSD starting to gain mainstream acceptance for uses such as treating anxiety.

Tripped: Nazi Germany, the CIA, and the Dawn of the Psychedelic Age by Norman Ohler https://amzn.to/3PWxLlE The author of the New York Times bestseller Blitzed returns with a provocative new history of drugs and postwar America, examining the untold story of how Nazi experiments into psychedelics covertly influenced CIA research and secretly shaped the War on Drugs. Berlin 1945. Following the fall of the Third Reich, drug use—long kept under control by the Nazis' strict anti-drug laws—is rampant throughout the city. Split into four sectors, Berlin's drug policies are being enforced under the individual jurisdictions of each allied power—the Soviet Union, Britain, France, and the US. In the American zone, Arthur J. Giuliani of the nascent Federal Bureau of Narcotics is tasked with learning about the Nazis' anti-drug laws and bringing home anything that might prove “useful” to the United States. Five years later, Harvard professor Dr. Henry Beecher began work with the US government to uncover the research behind the Nazis psychedelics program. Begun as an attempt to find a “truth serum” and experiment with mind control, the Nazi study initially involved mescaline, but quickly expanded to include LSD. Originally created for medical purposes by Swiss pharmaceutical Sandoz, the Nazis coopted the drug for their mind control military research—research that, following the war, the US was desperate to acquire. This research birthed MKUltra, the CIA's notorious brainwashing and psychological torture program during the 1950s and 1960s, and ultimately shaped US drug policy regarding psychedelics for over half a century. Based on extensive archival research on both sides of the Atlantic, Tripped is a wild, unconventional postwar history, a spiritual sequel to Norman Ohler's New York Times bestseller Blitzed. Revealing the close relationship and hidden connections between the Nazis and the early days of drugs in America, Ohler shares how this secret history held back therapeutic research of psychedelic drugs for decades and eventually became part of the foundation of America's War on Drugs.About the author Norman Ohler is an award-winning German novelist, screenwriter, and journalist. He spent five years researching Blitzed in numerous archives in Germany and the United States, and spoke to eye-witnesses, military historians, and doctors. He is also the author of the novels Die Quotenmaschine (the world's first hypertext novel), Mitte and Stadt des Goldes (translated into English as Ponte City). He was co-writer of the script for Wim Wenders' film Palermo Shooting.
Matt Crawford speaks with author Norman Ohler about his book, Tripped: Nazi Germany, the CIA, and the Dawn of the Psychedelic Age. Tripped, traces the roots of LSD to Germany during WWII and the Nazi's nefarious experiments to use it for mind control to the CIA's own interest in it for similar purposes. All the while the U.S government pushing the narrative that it was a dangerous drug and ignoring its benefits. Ohler highlights the corrupt U.S drug policies and the lack of scientific study that could have helped so many, to his own family's experimentation with it to treat his mother's dementia. As always Ohler does not disappoint, and this is impossible to put down.
