How AI and Data Shape Modern Customer Experience and Engagement Shep interviews Chris Koehler, Chief Marketing Officer at Twilio. He talks about creating exceptional customer experiences by leveraging personalization, customer trust, and AI. This episode of Amazing Business Radio with Shep Hyken answers the following questions and more: What defines an amazing digital customer experience today? How can businesses personalize digital interactions? Why is trust crucial in building long-term customer relationships? Why is it important for companies to use customer data responsibly and transparently? How does reducing friction impact customer satisfaction and retention? Top Takeaways: Personalization isn't just about using someone's name but about remembering their preferences, past actions, and making timely suggestions that fit their needs. When customers receive an experience that feels like it was made just for them, it leaves a strong, positive impression. Customers love it when a company remembers who they are and what they like, so they don't have to repeat themselves every time they interact or use another channel to communicate. Customers expect brands to use their data wisely and responsibly. It's not just about protecting information. It is also about applying it in ways that matter to customers. Trust is built when companies use data to solve problems or anticipate customer needs. Transparency is the foundation of customer relationships. When companies are up front about when customers are talking to AI and make it easy for them to connect with a human when necessary, they like the experience and feel respected and cared for. Making every step in the customer journey easy encourages customers to keep doing business with a company. If it's quick and simple to sign up, get help, or find what they need, customers are much more likely to come back. Customers want to communicate in the way that fits their situation and preferences. Companies need to be mindful of where their customers want to interact with them, whether it is by phone, chat, email, or social media. Different generations may have different preferences for communicating with a brand, but everyone likes having options. For example, customers may start with a chatbot but end up needing to talk to a human to solve complex or sensitive issues. Modern customer expectations include a consistently positive experience across multiple channels. Automating routine tasks through AI can make processes faster and more consistent, but it shouldn't detract from the human element of customer service. While technology can handle simple tasks quickly and efficiently, there are complex issues that need human intervention. Plus, Chris shares important and interesting stats on customer experience, AI, and personalization from Twilio's 2025 State of Customer Engagement Report. Tune in! Quote: "At the end of the day, people really don't care which channel they use. They just want the problem solved." Are you tired of chasing quick fixes for your health—pills for every symptom, supplements that don't work, and doctors who never really ask why you're struggling? What if the real answers to your pain, fatigue, or hormonal issues aren't in another prescription, but in discovering and healing the root cause?Today's guest, Kelsey Koehler, knows this firsthand. From surviving a controlling cult and an abusive marriage to secretly pursuing her education in functional medicine, her story is nothing short of extraordinary. Kelsey turned personal adversity into a mission: helping people reclaim their health, longevity, and freedom through functional medicine that actually works. She's the founder of Profit High Performance Medicine, where she and her team blend advanced lab testing, root-cause analysis, nutrition, and hormone optimization to restore the body from the inside out. Her work doesn't stop there—Kelsey is also pioneering new ways to serve veterans through a nonprofit that provides holistic solutions for PTSD, TBI, and other service-related health challenges. If you've ever wondered why your body still struggles despite doing “all the right things,” or if you want to learn how to build true resilience—physically, mentally, and emotionally—this episode will challenge what you thought you knew about health and give you a glimpse of what's really possible.Quotes:“I define functional medicine as looking at the body as a whole, instead of siphoning it into a set of symptoms.”“I always operated based on my internal values. I never wanted to lie, manipulate, or use my body as a selling point to my programs.”“Instead of looking at what everybody else was doing, I was envisioning what my future was going to be and what I wanted.”Key Takeaways:Stop masking symptoms—ask “why?” → Before reaching for another prescription or supplement, dig deeper into the root causes of your health issues. What patterns, habits, or stressors might be driving them?Audit your daily environment → Look at your sleep, nutrition, toxins, and stress load. Which of these areas could be quietly sabotaging your energy, hormones, or mental health?Invest in testing, not guessing → Consider comprehensive lab work (blood, stool, genetics) to uncover the real story behind your symptoms instead of relying on one-size-fits-all treatments.Rewire your thinking → Explore tools like Neuro-Linguistic Programming or guided meditation (such as Dr. Joe Dispenza's work) to help calm your nervous system and retrain your brain's stress response.Build resilience through values → Ask yourself: Am I operating from integrity, or just following what others say works? Living by your own clear internal code is the foundation for lasting health, relationships, and leadership. Conclusion:Kelsey Koehler's story is proof that even in the face of trauma, abuse, and broken systems, resilience and integrity can lead to true transformation. Her approach to functional medicine isn't just about healing the body—it's about restoring the whole person, inside and out. This conversation challenges us to stop settling for surface-level fixes and instead take ownership of our health, values, and future. If you're ready to rethink what's possible for your body, your mind, and your life—this episode is where that journey begins.

Twilio just reintroduced itself to the world with a bold new brand—and in this kickoff episode of Builders Wanted, you'll meet the leaders behind it.Host Kailey Raymond sits down with Chris Koehler (CMO) and Adam Morgan (VP of Brand & Creative) to unpack the strategy, emotion, and hard decisions behind Twilio's brand refresh. They share how they turned a platform for developers into a movement for builders, what it takes to evolve without losing your DNA, and why the best brands don't just look good—they make people feel seen.Expect honest takes on brand risk, leadership, internal buy-in, and one idea that (almost) involved a kidnapper van.-------------------Key Takeaways:How the Twilio rebrand unifies developers, business leaders, and marketers through the ‘builder' concept. How to achieve buy-in from employees and customers for a successful brand refresh. How adaptability and a sense of urgency enables swift and decisive actions, fostering creativity and strategic alignment during a brand refresh.-------------------“ A builder is really anyone. It's anyone who's got a dream or a vision or a passion or excitement to go out and make something. Builders are the people who have an idea and actually go and do something about it. They go out and make it. That's such an important part of our story because what are we as Twilio? We are a platform where you can build amazing customer experiences. In this episode of 'Tame the Mobile Beast,' Tom Butta hosts Chris Koehler, Chief Marketing Officer of Twilio, in a discussion about the intricacies of orchestrating seamless customer experiences across multiple channels. Chris highlights the complex challenge brands face in integrating new technologies, evolving user needs, and vast data streams, emphasizing that creating cohesive and delightful customer journeys requires more than just advanced technology—it calls for strong internal alignment and a well-thought-out strategy. The conversation underscores the importance of viewing customer experience as a holistic journey rather than a series of isolated interactions, warning that disjointed experiences across touchpoints can undermine customer satisfaction and brand loyalty.Additionally, the conversation would not be complete without touching on the potential of AI, specifically how it can be leveraged to enable personalization at scale. By leveraging a unified data profile and activating it across communication channels, AI can generate more relevant content, offers, and experiences. However, he cautions that success hinges on a deliberate strategy to avoid pitfalls like poor AI management, which could lead to negative customer experiences and increased skepticism. Finally, Chris shares his insights on balancing the digital and human elements in customer interactions and the future impact of AI on marketing and customer experience strategies. His advice underscores the importance of creating value-driven and efficient customer journeys that are deeply rooted in rich, contextual data.—Guest Quote"There's so many different ways to interact with your customers across your brand.
