Canterbury Mornings with Chris Lynch
John MacDonald: There's nothing special about supermarket specials

Canterbury Mornings with Chris Lynch

I love this idea the Commerce Commission and the Grocery Commissioner have come up with, of supermarkets giving us everyday low prices instead of the ever-changing, so-called “special prices”. The supermarket specials that really brass me off are the ones where you might see meat in one of the fridges, and they'll have a sign showing the price per kilo. That means absolutely nothing to me. Maybe there are some shoppers who know all the ins-and-outs of prices per kilo, but I'm not one of them. The other thing about specials is that, most of the time, it feels like the supermarkets are yelling “special special special” at me, but it doesn't look like much of a special. I'll be the first to say that I'm in the lucky position of not having to rely on supermarket specials. That's a financial thing, but it's also because I'm no longer at a stage of life where there are three kids at home and where it's not unusual to kiss goodbye to $400+ a week at the check-out. But I've never been one of those people who buy their bananas at one place because they're cheap and my mandarins somewhere else because their cheaper. And, when I see and hear the ads about specials, they pretty much don't register with me. And it's not just because I can afford to pay what I have to pay. And it's not just because the supermarket shops are cheaper these days because there aren't three kids living at home. It's also because I see supermarket specials in the same way I see cafes with signs outside saying “great coffee”. They can tell me what they want as much as they like, but whether I believe it or not is another thing. The other week I went into Pak 'n Save and when I hit the fruit and veg section there was a sign telling me that the 99 cent broccoli heads were an amazing special. I wasn't that convinced because they seemed pretty small to me, but I grabbed a couple anyway. But as I kept moving around the fruit and veg section, I saw another bin of broccoli heads —again with the sign saying 99 cents a head and “amazing special”— but these things were about twice the size of the smaller ones at the start of the fruit and veg section. What was that all about? And it's little examples like that —as well as the one I mentioned earlier about specials being based on price per kilo— that demonstrate how much of a rort this whole “special” thing is. So I agree with Grocery Commissioner Pierre van Heerden who is saying that doing away with specials and having everyday low prices instead would be more straightforward and transparent. He also thinks it would allow any new operators coming into the market to put real pressure on the existing supermarkets. I'm not as sold on that bit, because I don't think there are any foreign supermarket companies interested in coming here. But if he thinks that, that's fine. The only problem I've got with this idea is that it's going to be voluntary —for now, anyway— whereas I think it should be compulsory. The Commissioner says they'll give the supermarkets a year or so to get with the programme, but I want to see this happening ASAP. So does Consumer NZ. Its boss, Jon Duffy, says: “We know New Zealanders love a special. We also know there's not much that's special about supermarket specials.” He's spot on there. He says: “Everyday low prices would benefit all shoppers, so would price transparency. Right now, it's so hard to know what's a fair price because the prices of certain goods fluctuate so much.” And that's the nub of it right there. If you go to the supermarket today and see all these signs saying special here, special there, all you can do is take their word that it somehow is a special. And like the sheep most of us are, we think ‘aww, on special…I'll get a few of those”. But how do we know we are actually getting the best deal? We don't. Which is why the Grocery Commissioner and the Commerce Commission think the days of the supermarket special should be numbered. I think so too.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Can God Create Everything from Nothing? (Special Podcast Highlight)

The Patrick Madrid Show

Patrick Madrid tackled a great question that could make you scratch your head a bit! How is it logical for God to create everything out of nothing? Our buddy Anonymous Andy from Rhode Island wrote in with a serious theological puzzle. He gets that God is logical and cannot create contradictions (like a four-sided triangle or a married bachelor). Then Andy hits us with the question: "If God created everything out of nothing, isn’t that a contradiction too?" Patrick’s Breakdown: Why This Isn’t a Contradiction 1. A Contradiction = Two Opposing Truths at the Same Time A four-sided triangle is actually impossible because "triangle" means "three-sided figure." If you try to add a fourth side, it's no longer a triangle. That’s a logical contradiction. Creating something out of nothing, however, is not. 2. God IS Existence Itself (Remember the Burning Bush?) Patrick takes us to Exodus 3, where Moses asks God, “Who should I say sent me?” and God replies: "I AM WHO AM." Not "I have being" but "I AM being." Unlike us, who received existence from something before us (our parents), God didn’t get existence from anything: He IS existence. 3. Everything in Creation Had a Beginning Everything we see: planets, people, Patrick Madrid’s radio show, came into existence because something caused it to exist. Here’s the important thing: there has to be a first cause, something that always existed and started it all. That "something" is God: the uncaused cause, the prime mover, the reason anything exists at all. 4. "Before" Creation? There Was No "Before"! We’re stuck thinking in terms of time, but time itself is part of creation. Saying, "What happened before creation?" is like asking, "What’s north of the North Pole?" (Nothing.) When God created, it wasn’t like He was sitting around twiddling His divine thumbs. There was no "before": only God, eternally existing. 5. It’s About God’s Power, Not a Magic Trick Creation ex nihilo (out of nothing) doesn’t mean "poof!" in a magician sort of way. It means that God, who IS existence, shares existence with created things. He isn’t reshaping pre-existing stuff like some cosmic Play-Doh; He gives being itself. Final Takeaway: It's All About God’s Nature Patrick wraps it up by emphasizing: Creating out of nothing isn’t a contradiction; it’s the logical result of who God is. If God wasn't the uncaused cause, nothing else could exist. He created not because He needed to, but out of love. God creating out of nothing isn’t like a square circle; it's the only way anything could exist at all.

They discuss his other projects and then Asif asks Ali about Norm's comedy style and Ali's thoughts on MacDonald's last Netflix comedy special ‘Nothing Special'.  After a brief discussion of Norm's gambling issues, they then discuss how he kept his diagnosis of multiple myeloma a secret for years and what eventually led to his death in 2021.    MacDonald had several stem cell transplants, so in the second half, Ali asks Asif about these. Asif explains how stem cell transplants and bone marrow transplants are the same thing, the history of this procedure and how it is used against cancer. Asif goes over the different types of transplants, how the stem cells are harvested and how one finds a donor. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Barbara Bain, Legendary Actress, “Mission Impossible” About Harvey's guest: Today's special guest, Barbara Bain, is a beloved actress who is perhaps best known for her portrayal of undercover agent “Cinnamon Carter” on the classic TV series, “Mission: Impossible”, for which she became the first actress in television history to receive 3 consecutive Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.   She also received a Golden Globe Award nomination and a Photoplay Award nomination for Best Female TV star.  She also created the iconic role of “Dr. Helena Russell” in the classic British science fiction series “Space: 1999” and the made-for-TV movies “Alien Attack”, “Destination Moonbase Alpha”, “Cosmic Princess” and “Journey Through the Black Sun”.    And over the years we've seen her in dozens of TV shows including “The Dick Van Dyke Show”, “Perry Mason”, “Get Smart”, “Moonlighting”, “Murder, She Wrote”, “Diagnosis Murder”, “CSI” and many more.  Her movie credits include “Savage”, “Skinheads”, “Panic”, “Bel Air”, “Trapped”, “Political Disasters”, “Nothing Special”, “On the Rocks”,  “American Gun”, for which she received a DVD Exclusive Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and 3 of my favourite  short films: “Reconnected”, for which she received a Best Actress nomination at the Madrid International Film Festival; “Take My Hand”, for which she won 3 prestigious film festival awards; and “Pacific Edge”, for which she won Best Actress Awards at the Golden Door International Film Festival AND the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival.   And I can't resist mentioning her hilarious performance as “Dr. Olga Schmetner” in the 1981 TV movie, “The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island”.    On the stage, she's won Los Angeles Critic's Circle and DramaLogue Awards for her performances in "Wings", "Happy Days" and "The Chairs".    And in 2016 she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.   And if ALL OF THAT weren't enough, out guest founded a children's literacy program through the Screen Actors Guild called "Book Pals", which initially had hundreds of actors reading to school children in major cities across America.  And now it's an online program called “Storyline Online”, so kids all over the world can choose a famous actor to read them a story. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ To learn more about Barbara Bain, go to:https://twitter.com/thebarbarabain #BarbaraBain    #harveybrownstoneinterviews

As usual, Daniel and Duffy have to put a little twist on Christmas. Most of us know the Christmas Story, but there are some details about who God came to announce the birth of Jesus to, that is quite interesting. According to culture of the time, He chose the lowliest of people, the shepherds. To the culture, they were “Nothing Special”. It was the leftover job someone needed to fill, but God found importance in them. Listen as Daniel and Duffy explain more about the great love of Christ for ALL of us. Yes, we talk about it in the Christmas story by way of His birth, death and resurrection, but have you ever stopped to think deeper? WHY did He choose to do such a thing? Have you ever thought about how HE truly see's each and every one of us and the passionate love He has for His creation. Join us for this fun Journey!
