It is a story of family connection across generations through the simple things of life and a return to the essentials that bring back true joy. Our conversation introduces the book, the story's significance to Des and her audience, the intricate and impressive work Sloane put into the illustrations, and how the book has a life of its own. Des Cooper is a former attorney turned Pulitzer Prize-nominated journalist and an author of fiction, poetry, and essays who won numerous awards, including the 2017 Next Generation Indie Book Award. Her work has appeared in Flash Fiction America 2023, The Best Small Fictions 2018, Callaloo, Michigan Quarterly Review, The Best American Essays 2019, and many more publications. Bec Sloane, is a visual artist and Agricultural Research Technician working in and around farming communities in Central New Jersey who has worked in the arts and film industries in New York and abroad. She specializes in stop-motion animation and large-scale fabrication work for TV, theatre, and film. She has worked for clients ranging from the Jim Henson Company to Macy's iconic flagship, and has implemented arts-driven curricula for grades K-12. Trespasses, Louise's first novel, was published by Bloomsbury earlier this year and was awarded novel of the year at the An Post Irish Book Awards. Michael Magee is the fiction editor of The Tangerine and a graduate of the PhD Creative Writing programme at Queen's University, Belfast. His writing has appeared in Winter Papers, The Lifeboat and in The 32: An Anthology of Working Class Writing. Close to Home, his first novel, will be published by Hamish Hamilton in April 2023. Nicole Flattery is a writer and critic. Her story collection Show Them A Good Time, was published by The Stinging Fly and Bloomsbury in 2019. It's titled “Nothing Special” but the story behind Desiree Cooper's new children's book is very special. In her book, Cooper, a Pulitzer Prize nominated journalist, chronicles the relationship between her grandson Jax and his great grandfather - but this former attorney and community activist goes further than that. As our Lisa Godley discovered, Cooper also glances at history, by reminding us of how the Great Migration separated millions of Black families, and how some have made it a point to reconnect with loved ones who chose to remain in the south. Cooper was a 2015 Kresge Artist Fellow, specializing in Literary Arts.

Canadian indie pop group Alvvays are the latter since their new album Blue Rev is their first in five years. In this week's Indiecast, hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen review marathoners Alvvays' latest release (25:27) as well as Björk's mushroom-inspired LP Fossora (36:42).The biggest music news of this week was a pleasantly surprising No. 1 single. It's Steve Lacey's R&B hit "Bad Habit," which dethroned Harry Styles' long-running "As It Was" No. 1 and it seems like a very organic ascent (45:58). In other news, indie music celebrated the 10th anniversary of a majorly influential album: Tame Impala's Lonerism. Over Memorial Day weekend, Netflix released a new stand-up special from Norm Macdonald, who unexpectedly died in September of last year. Unexpected to us and his friends; perhaps more expected to the comedian, who had kept his cancer diagnosis incredibly secret. On the occasion of the release of Norm Macdonald's “Nothing Special,” Washington Post national arts reporter Geoff Edgers published a new piece featuring interviews with his friends and colleagues about the special and his life's work. I'm very happy to have Geoff on today to talk about Norm specifically and the art of profiling more generally.  Back in 2016, Geoff wrote a longish feature about Norm that, I think, helped spark something of a reappraisal or reconsideration of his work: though beloved—almost revered—by fellow comedians, Norm had fallen out of the spotlight with normal folks, and this well-read feature reminded them of what they were missing. (The publication of his absolutely brilliant book around the same time also helped in this regard.) And Geoff's designation of Macdonald as “Tolstoy in sweatpants” in his obit for the Canadian funnyman is a pretty perfect encapsulation of his charms. Learn more about your ad choices.
