Jason and Brenda are back for two more spooky episodes of The X-Files. First, we go to a old folks home where people are being attacked by invisible sources and maybe a generic Asian drug is to blame! Then Terry O'Quinn guest stars as an asshole detective who needs Mulder and Scully to help solve a rash of serial killings that look similar to ones that happened in the '40s! Also an epic Brenda Baseball Bupdate!

Mulder begrudgingly humors Scully's interest in a case of ghostly rape at a convalescent home. The elderly there are not what they expected to find as many of them are surprisingly active and coherent - seemingly without a need for care. As orderlies begin to die and the behaviors of the residents get stranger, the agents uncover a mystical and dangerous secret. Person enters the building. Two male orderlies, UPSHAW and TIERNAN, are watching a boxing match featuring Mike Tyson on TV.) I hate these guys, I hope they die immediately. These two old guys aren't much better, though we do agree they could've finished the match. Though Hal isn't too old to slap. The tying people down is odd. And now we get to watch her be raped.
This week we are doing our best to slog through “Excelsis Dei”! We bring our own antagonistic energy to this rancid episode with a legendary argument about Tater Tots vs. Cheese Curds, note how the resident Awful Old Men sound just like Statler and Waldorf, and laugh at Mulder's lackluster attempt to save a man's life. We wonder why it is that Mulder got body-snatched in this one and complain about the frankly awful treatment of sexual assault, Asian characters, and elder abuse. This episode even manages to be ghostphobic. All in all, we try and get this one out of the way as quick as we can, but there is one all-time line: Mushrooms taste good on hamburgers, but they don't raise the dead! So true, Scully. So true.Content warning: Discussions of sexual assault due to the nature of the episode.Send us an email at scullynationpod@gmail.com or follow us on Twitter and Instagram!
A nurse who works in a home for the elderly in Massachusetts claims to have been raped by an invisible assailant. Mulder and Scully investigate, and soon find that the patients of the home are not quite what they seem. One of them appears to be seeing what isn't there, and the continued occurrence of seemingly inexplicable events point toward an extraordinary explanation. It’s like Cocoon, but murdery! After a nurse says she was raped by an invisible spectre, but is sure it was a one of the patients at the nursing home where she works, Mulder and Scully investigate if this a case of spiritual projection or some other supernatural attack. While there, they notice the Alzheimer's patients are surprisingly lucid and seem to be improving. Is there something supernatural going on or is there a more mundane explanation? Or maybe a more confusing one? In the criminal justice system, sexually based offenses are considered especially heinous. In the FBI, the dedicated detectives who investigate these vicious felonies are members of an elite squad known as the X Files. These are their stories. Wait... "Excelsis Dei" leaves The Girls asking, "What?" and "Why?" This episode attempts to tackle a sexual assault case, where the perpetrator is an invisible entity, and (you guessed it) the victim isn't believed. If you find yourself wondering "How did this episode get made?" just remember, there were no women in the writers room.

Have an episode of your favorite show that doesn't quite stand the test of time or societal progress? For Stella Cheeks, it's the Star Trek TOS episode "The Paradise Syndrome," and for Erin Cline, it's the X-Files episode "Excelsis Dei." Can the X-Trekkers find the joy and love in these truly misguided episodes, or are these missteps enough to spoil their favorite shows for good? (Spoilers: We're good at podcasting!) --- About the podcast: Erin Cline and Stella Cheeks have been friends for over a decade but have never seen each other's favorite TV show. Seeking to rectify that grievous error (seriously, they used to live together), X-Treks was born! Each week the duo choose one episode from Star Trek: The Original Series and one episode from The X-Files that fits a previously chosen cinematic theme, watch them together, and share their feelings! There's a lot of heavy stuff going on in this episode, whether its the issue of elder care or elder abuse or sexual harassment by the elderly towards young nurses, under the excuse that "they come from a different time where this is harmless and who cares it's just a harmless old man..." In any case, yes, the episode is kind of heavy. And maybe not entirely successful in making all of its points as concretely as it would like to. But there it is. It's strong enough that Daniel and I certainly have a bunch to talk about here. Dig in. This was a hard one for us, but we would rather talk about it than avoid the episode altogether. Thanks for listening, but if you'd rather skip this one, we totally get it.
