In this episode of "Cocoon Conversations" on the Career Flipper podcast, I, Jenny Dempsey, take you along on my career journey. This year, I've committed to opening up about my own career flip, just as I encourage my guests to do. So here we are, in May 2025, and I can hardly believe it's been four months since I started my current day job. It feels surreal to say that, especially considering I was laid off for two years before this.During this time, I've been balancing my full-time job with furniture restoration on the side, dedicating Sundays to it, and squeezing in podcasting and all the related tasks whenever I can. If that sounds overwhelming, it is! Life can be a juggling act, and I know I'm not alone in feeling this way. Scheduling time with friends often feels like a game of Tetris, as we all navigate our busy lives.I've always been the type of person who thrives on variety. I'm the one multitasking—doing laundry while putting away dishes, preparing to record a podcast, creating social media content for my furniture flipping page, and making sure my dog, Dwight, gets outside for a potty break. My brain has always thrived on this mix of activities, and I've been like this for as long as I can remember.Looking back, I've come to realize something significant. For a long time, I believed that work—capital W work—was my identity. I thought it was the only thing I was good at. I didn't believe in taking vacations; if I did, I'd bring my laptop along and continue working. I even had a panic attack in front of a customer service team I was managing because I was so consumed by my job. I poured everything into my work, only to learn the hard way that companies would replace me in an instant. When I was laid off and struggled to find a new job for two years, I was left questioning my identity. Who was I if I wasn't working?I dive into this and more in the episode! In today’s Tricky Questions episode, Justin and Kylie answer Kim’s heartfelt question: How do we raise young adult males and stay connected when we don’t agree with their choices? Whether your son is 16 or 26, this episode is full of practical, compassionate advice about letting go of control, nurturing connection, and guiding your son’s journey into manhood without damaging the relationship. KEY POINTS: Independence is the goal. Young men need to pull away to become their own person. This is healthy and expected development—not defiance. Connection > Control. Every attempt to correct or direct your young adult without enough relational “water in the bucket” weakens your influence. Prioritise staying close. Rites of passage matter. Boys don’t just “become men” by aging—they seek experiences to prove themselves. Without intentional guidance, they’ll create risky alternatives (like Schoolies, binge drinking, etc.). Defer respectfully. As children grow, parents should move from cocooning → reasoned cocooning → pre-arming → reasoned deference → full deference. Ask for consent to influence. If you want to share advice, first ask: “Are you open to hearing some ideas?” If the answer is no, focus on rebuilding connection. Your presence matters more than your opinion. The way you show up—without judgement, with genuine interest—determines whether your young adult wants to stay close or push away. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE: “If our relationship is a bucket, connection is the water. Correction and direction? That’s just air. And no one wants to carry an empty bucket.” RESOURCES MENTIONED: Happy Families School Membership: A resource hub for schools and parents seeking connection-based parenting support. Justin’s upcoming book on raising boys and young men (sign up now to hear all the details!) More on rites of passage from Dr Arne Rubinstein in the Bringing Up Boys Summit ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS: Step back from control. Accept that your child’s job is to grow away from you. Your job? Stay close enough that they still want to come back. Check your relationship “bucket.” Before correcting or advising, ask: Is there enough connection here for this to be received well? Use the deference ladder. Ages 0–7: Cocoon 8–13: Reasoned cocooning 13–15: Pre-arming 15–17: Reasoned deference 18+: Full deference with permission to advise Build trust by asking permission. Instead of jumping in with opinions, say: “Would you be open to hearing a thought I have?” Let them grow. Sometimes, encouraging your child to move out or take more responsibility is the healthiest path forward—even if it’s inconvenient or uncomfortable. JULIETTE ARMANET "Partir un jour" JULIA JEAN-BAPTISTE "La fête est triste sans toi" COCOON "Champion of the world" TYLER BALLGAME "Help Me Out" THEODORA "PAY! feat. Photo by Dan McMahon Born 1989 Atlanta, Georgia. She lives in Brooklyn, New York, and works in the Bronx, New York. Emma McMillan searches for the pulsing vitality of life through non-human figurative paintings. Drawing, collage, macroscopic photography, and archival research are avenues for abstraction of the animal form. For several years a local Spotted Lanternfly infestation has been a commentary on the current state of human and animal affairs. The series, now expanded across species, takes on lusty and religious overtones of reincarnation. Sampling psychology, the natural world, and pop culture, her gem-hued oil paintings are complex reflections on living and its mutations across time. Emma McMillan has had institutional exhibitions at Atlanta Contemporary ArtsCenter, Atlanta Georgia, “Project X” (2019) She has had solo exhibitions at Sebastian Gladstone, New York, 2025, Sebastian Gladstone, Los Angeles, 2024, PhilippZollinger, Zurich, 2024, and a solo booth with PhilippZollinger at Liste Art Fair Basel, in June 2024. I don't want to alarm anyone, but the 2020s are already half over. This horrific revelation doesn't have many upsides, but one of them is surely the fact that – with five years of this rotten decade under our belts – we can start to think a little bit about the current shape of the gaming landscape, and how it'll be remembered when we inevitably arbitrarily lump it all together in another five years' time. OK, turns out that wasn't such a cheerful conversation either, but you know what is a place of loveliness and positivity? The Indieventure Vault. Yes, that's right, today we're once again opening the blast-proof doors to go over our very favourite indie games of the first half of the 2020s, at the end of which each of us selects our own #1 pick to rest safe in the Vault forever. The list we come up with is as eclectic as you'd expect, featuring as it does a blend of personal favourites and acclaimed best-ofs including Among Us, Boyfriend Dungeon, Citizen Sleeper, Cocoon, Death's Door, Immortality, Max Gentlemen Sexy Business, Sherlock Holmes Chapter One, Thank Goodness You're Here, Umurangi Generation, and Vampire Survivors. But only three from that shortlist can be submitted into the prestigious Indieventure Vault. Who will it be? (Insert reality-TV-coded pause.) I mean, come on, obviously you're going to have to listen to find out, I'm not going to give the big reveal away just like that. We end as always on our hyperfixations, and in what may actually be a podcast first, we're all about video games in our free time right now! Rebecca's new favourite is still under embargo, so all she can really say at the moment is that she's really been enjoying Blue Prince (check back next episode for more on that!). Liam sings the praises of the wonderful co-op playground that is Split Fiction while also taking the auteur to task for the many, many issues he has with the plot of Split Fiction. And Rachel loves Two Point Museum, because as we all know she's a lady of impeccable taste and it's simply great. Our music was written and performed by Ollie Newbury! The beloved German producer talks about finding inner peace, overstimulation and his new album on Pampa Records. Mental health is a topic that comes up frequently in the music industry, but it's still not discussed enough among electronic music's top performers. In this RA Exchange, Stefan Kozalla—better known as DJ Koze—opens up about his battle with anxiety, self-doubt and rising expectations that come with being a long-standing, high-profile name. He talks about overstimulation, music as rest and the compromises artists need to make to have relevance and staying power. Kozalla, a beloved and eccentric German artist who has developed a cult following over the course of his career, has productions on esteemed labels like XL, Kompakt, Cocoon, Warp, Ninja Tune and BPitch, which garner praise as soon as they're released. "Every time DJ Koze comes out of the woodwork to drop a 12-inch—or even just a remix—we usually end up hearing it everywhere for months on end," wrote former RA editor Andrew Ryce. Kozalla talks to RA contributor (and former editor) Matt Unicomb about his production process and early influences—an uncanny combination of Basic Channel and Public Enemy—as well as his forthcoming album, Music Can Hear Us, coming out on Pampa Records on April 4th. From laptop-toting C-sections to spreadsheet nightmares, employee leave management has long been one of HR's most complex and frustrating challenges. Mahima Chawla, CEO and co-founder of Cocoon, is changing all that with a revolutionary approach to leave administration.Mahima shares how a chance conversation sparked her journey into the leave management space. When a colleague described bringing her laptop to her C-section to file for state benefits, Mahima was shocked by the fragmented nature of employee leave – with different time allocations, multiple payment sources, and employees left to navigate complicated paperwork during already stressful life transitions. After speaking with dozens of HR leaders who universally described leave as "an absolute nightmare," she recognized an opportunity to transform this overlooked but critical function.Cocoon tackles five major headaches for HR teams: navigating complex compliance regulations, managing multi-source payroll calculations, coordinating intricate workflows, improving employee experiences, and providing valuable benchmarking data. What makes their approach unique is their focus on automation – Mahima explains that 95% of leave management involves objective decisions perfectly suited for software handling, creating consistency while freeing HR professionals from administrative burdens.Beyond streamlining processes, Cocoon is addressing financial barriers that often prevent employees from taking needed leave. By ensuring employees understand their payment sources and helping them access entitled funds, the platform supports both employers and workers during critical life moments. Looking ahead, Mahima envisions expanding Cocoon's capabilities across more industries and geographies, while predicting that the definition of "leave" itself will continue evolving beyond traditional categories to embrace more of life's realities.Connect with Mahima on LinkedIn and follow Cocoon's page for updates on their appearances at major industry events including HR Transform and DMEC in 2025.Support the showFeature Your Brand on the HRchat PodcastThe HRchat show has had 100,000s of downloads and is frequently listed as one of the most popular global podcasts for HR pros, Talent execs and leaders. Have you ever wondered how two yoga teachers with diverse backgrounds and experiences come together to create something magical? In this episode, I sit down with my friend and fellow yoga instructor, Tony Lupinacci, to explore our journeys in the yoga world and our upcoming retreat in Portugal. Tony and I dive deep into our personal stories, discussing how we found yoga and the transformative power it's had in our lives. We share vulnerable moments, from dealing with loss to overcoming self-doubt, and how these experiences have shaped our teaching styles.Tony has been practicing and teaching yoga for over a decade in an attempt to metabolize deep grief and to understand the human condition through his own. After countless hours of practice and self-study, he began to shed the protective layers of his personality. Eventually, he found himself thinking less and feeling more, coming to a simple yet profound truth: our true nature is to love and to move from a space of open-hearted compassion. Tony's classes weave Ashtanga, Kundalini, Gosh and Katonah Yoga together to create a rigorous inward exploration of the self. He also uses vedic meditation, mantra and kriya as tools to reach higher states of consciousness through the physical form. His goal is for practitioners to leave with a stronger connection to themselves and to all sentient beings. The Power of Community and RetreatsWe're both excited about our upcoming retreat at Cocoon in Portugal, a 250-acre forest farm that promises to be a magical experience. We talk about the special bond that forms during retreats and how they allow for deeper connections, personal growth and are also a fantastic way to make new friends! Join us this Summer in Portugal from July 31st - August 6th. This episode of the ChangeMakers podcast, produced by CityCURRENT and powered by Higginbotham Insurance and Financial Services, features an insightful conversation with Kathy Mull, the Executive Director of The Cocoon, a comprehensive domestic and sexual violence agency located in Wood County, Ohio. Hosted by Jeremy C. Park, the episode delves into the critical issues of domestic and intimate partner relationship violence, highlighting the work of The Cocoon and its innovative programs like Champions of Change.Kathy Mull's Journey and Inspiration:Kathy Mull shares her background growing up in a small town in Ohio, which instilled in her the importance of community care but also exposed her to hidden struggles within families.Despite initial reservations about social work, influenced by her mother's psychology background and her own observations of unhealthy relationships among her peers in high school, Kathy was drawn to the profession as a way to support survivors of violence. She emphasizes that her understanding of social work evolved beyond child protective services to encompass a broad spectrum of support for individuals in need.Kathy defines a social worker as someone who walks alongside individuals during difficult times, opens doors, provides support in a safe space, and fosters community. She holds a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Toledo and a Master of Social Work from Eastern Michigan and has over 22 years of experience serving survivors.Kathy is one of a small number of individuals who completed the Advocacy Learning Center course through Praxis International, underscoring her specialized training and expertise in supporting survivors. The Cocoon: Providing Safety, Healing, and Justice:Established in 2005, The Cocoon provides shelter and advocacy services to survivors of various forms of violence, including domestic violence, sexual assault, sexual harassment, sex trafficking, stalking, and adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse.Located in Bowling Green, Ohio, The Cocoon serves Wood County, a largely rural area where resources for survivors were limited before its establishment. The impetus for The Cocoon's creation was heightened by four domestic violence homicides in the community, which underscored the need for local support. The Cocoon offers 24/7 support, 365 days a year, always at no cost to the survivor. The organization's mission is to provide safety, healing, and justice for survivors and all those affected by abuse, while also engaging in educational outreach.Kathy notes the significant increase in demand for services during the COVID-19 pandemic due to increased isolation and other factors, and highlights that the healing process for survivors is now often longer and more intensive. The Cocoon serves an average of 850 to 900 survivors a year locally.Champions of Change: Engaging the Workplace:Champions of Change is an innovative program developed by The Cocoon to partner with local businesses and organizations to support employees experiencing or at risk of domestic and sexual violence. The program aims to expand the safety net for survivors and prevent violence by creating safe workplaces and providing resources and education to employees.Recognizing that employees often confide in coworkers or supervisors before seeking formal help, the program equips workplaces to offer initial support and connect individuals with resources. The program also addresses the issue of survivors losing their jobs due to the impact of abuse on their work performance or abusers interfering at the workplace.Champions of Change provides businesses with workshops and resources to educate stakeholders and employees, fostering a corporate culture that does not tolerate violence.Kathy highlights the importance of a partnership approach, tailoring the program to the specific needs and culture of each organization. The program emphasizes proactive engagement rather than solely reacting to identified problems, sending a message that the company cares about its employees' well-being.A key aspect of the program involves training leadership and HR personnel first to equip them with the tools and language to support employees who disclose abuse.Kathy shares red flags that employers can be aware of, such as changes in work performance, increased absenteeism, implausible excuses, lateness, eagerness to leave work, changes in demeanor, and visible signs of physical abuse. The program provides employers with strategies for intervention and problem-solving to support affected employees while maintaining business productivity.Lessons Learned and the Impact of the Work:Kathy emphasizes that every organization is different, necessitating a tailored approach to partnership.Overcoming employer reluctance by framing the program as proactive support rather than an admission of problems is crucial. The transformative impact of the program on workplace culture and the lives of survivors has been significant, exemplified by the partnership with Principal Business Enterprises (PBE).Kathy's work is deeply rooted in her identity as a social worker, prioritizing people first in all aspects of her role as Executive Director. She underscores that nonprofit organizations are businesses with a social mission. The stories of survivors have profoundly impacted Kathy, reinforcing the importance of creating spaces where their experiences are valued and where they can find safety and healing. This work has provided Kathy with a voice to advocate for survivors in broader community conversations, connecting issues like economics and housing to the prevalence of gender-based violence. She believes that social change, achieved through collective effort and open conversations, is essential to eradicating violence.Call to Action and Getting Involved:Kathy encourages listeners to learn about and support their local domestic violence programs and Rape Crisis Centers. She highlights the importance of understanding where resources are lacking in communities. There are various ways to contribute to the cause, including financial donations, volunteering time and skills, and acting as a connector to link individuals with needed support.Being a safe person to listen and offering to connect individuals with resources is a vital form of support. The Cocoon's website, https://thecocoon.org, provides comprehensive information about their programs, ways to support them, and contact details.Their 24/7 hotline for accessing services or getting help is 419-373-1730, option 2.This podcast episode offers valuable insights into the pervasive issue of domestic and sexual violence and the critical role of community-based organizations like The Cocoon. Kathy Mull's personal journey and her leadership in developing innovative programs like Champions of Change demonstrate the power of collaboration in creating safer communities for survivors and preventing future violence. It serves as a powerful call to action for individuals and businesses to become part of the solution. Eliot Brooks is the CEO and co-founder of Cocoon. Cocoon is driving the industrial circular economy, starting with a process that helps the steel industry continue supplying a critical feedstock for cement production. This feedstock is increasingly at risk as steelmaking transitions from coal-based blast furnaces to lower-emission electric arc furnaces. Cocoon was founded on the realization that as industries decarbonize, certain process changes disrupt circular supply chains. The connection between the slag byproduct of steelmaking and the demands of cement production is their starting focus. Earlier this year, Cocoon announced a $5.4 million pre-seed round led by Wireframe, Gigascale, SOSV, and Celsius Industries. In this episode, we cover: [1:33] Introduction to Cocoon[3:13] The challenge steel decarbonization poses for the cement industry[9:56] Cocoon's process for transforming steel slag into a cementitious material[10:51] Eliot's background and journey to working on this technology[15:46] Cocoon's business model and go-to-market strategy[19:43] Decarbonization pathways for steel and the role of electric arc furnaces[21:10] Cocoon's current technology readiness and near-term deployment plans[22:05] Building industrial expertise at Cocoon[25:07] Comparing the US and Europe as initial target markets[27:57] Cocoon's recent $5.4 million pre-seed funding round[30:00] Eliot's perspective on bringing expertise from other industries to address challenges in steelmakingEpisode recorded on Nov 20, 2024 (Published on Jan 16, 2025) Enjoyed this episode?
