"Black Mirror" is now in its seventh season, and the British anthology television series is still going strong under the leadership and direction of series creator Charlie Brooker. Paul Giamatti received fantastic reviews for his performance in Episode 5, "Eulogy," and there was a ton of anticipation for the sequel to one of the show's most acclaimed episodes, "USS Callister" with "USS Callister : Into Infinity." Gigmatti, Brooker, Stephan Pehrsson (Cinematographer for "Bête Noire" & "USS Callister : Into Infinity"), and James MacLachlan (VFX Supervisor) were all kind enough to spend some time speaking with us about their work on the series, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the series, which is now available to stream in full on Netflix. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Intervals has been praised by The Guardian, the Observer, Publisher's Weekly, Elinor Cleghorn (author of Unwell Women) and Prospect Magazine. It was longlisted for the Women's Prize for Non-Fiction. Marianne Brooker is based in Bristol, where she works for a charity campaigning on climate and social justice. She has a PhD from Birkbeck and a background in arts research and teaching. She won the 2022 Fitzcarraldo Essay Prize for Intervals, her first book. Get the book here or at your local bookshop. What makes a good death? A good daughter? In 2009, with her forties and a harsh wave of austerity on the horizon, Marianne Brooker's mother was diagnosed with primary progressive multiple sclerosis. She made a workshop of herself and her surroundings, combining creativity and activism in inventive ways. But over time, her ability to work, to move and to live without pain diminished drastically. Determined to die in her own home, on her own terms, she stopped eating and drinking in 2019. In Intervals, Brooker reckons with heartbreak, weaving her first and final memories with a study of doulas, living wills and the precarious economics of social, hospice and funeral care. Blending memoir, polemic and feminist philosophy, Brooker joins writers such as Anne Boyer, Maggie Nelson, Donald Winnicott and Lola Olufemi to raise essential questions about choice and interdependence and, ultimately, to imagine care otherwise.
What if joy wasn't something you had to earn? And what if the reason it feels so far away isn't because you're doing it wrong - but because your body doesn't feel safe enough to receive it?In this powerful episode, I'm joined by Danielle Brooker - Motherhood Joy Coach, speaker, and mentor - who helps Mums break free from exhaustion, ditch the pressure to ‘do it right,' and expand their capacity for joy without self-sacrifice.Danielle offers a radical reframe: that true, sustainable joy isn't found in more bubble baths or 'perfect' to-do lists. It's found in the body, when our nervous system feels safe enough to soften.Together, we explore:Why so many mothers feel stuck in survival modeHow nervous system regulation is the missing link in accessing lasting joyWhy “just think positive” culture can leave women feeling unseen and unsupportedDanielle's personal story of burnout and what it really means to “do your thing” in alignment with joyPractical, embodied ways to begin reconnecting with joy - even amidst the chaos of MotherhoodWe also talk about Danielle's free online retreat happening from 20–23 May 2025 - Mama Joy Ignite - a soulful, spacious event for big-hearted, ambitious mothers ready to reconnect with themselves, break free of the mess, and ignite their joy.Along with 18+ other inspiring experts I'm honoured to be a speaker at this retreat too - leading a juicy, soul-deep conversation and visualisation to help you lighten the maternal mental load.

Chuck Todd begins with a critical assessment of the Democratic Party's first 100 days under the Trump administration, noting widespread discontent among Democratic voters with party leadership. He examines the positioning of potential 2028 contenders, with AOC emerging as Bernie Sanders' heir apparent, Buttigieg and Pritzker carefully laying groundwork, and Gavin Newsom attempting to distance himself from his progressive reputation. He highlights Arizona's Ruben Gallego as a potential breakthrough national figure while acknowledging the Democratic brand remains problematic with many voters despite individual politicians' popularity. Then he dives into a fascinating conversation with "Black Mirror" creator Charlie Brooker, who discusses his dystopian anthology series through the lens of human response to technology rather than the technology itself. Brooker reflects on social media's evolution from optimistic beginning to profit-driven outrage machine, and shares insights on artificial intelligence's most pressing concerns: job displacement and algorithmic management. The conversation covers wide-ranging topics including healthcare differences between the US and UK, AI's impact on education and emotional connections, and the accelerating pace of technological change that feels increasingly destabilizing. Throughout, Brooker maintains his characteristic blend of dark humor and thoughtful analysis about our relationship with technology, even touching on how the COVID pandemic influenced his creative perspective. The episode concludes with "Ask Chuck," where Todd addresses listener questions about the potential echo chamber effect in local news, the potential fracturing of the Republican Party, and speculation about Trump's relationship with stock market fluctuations.00:00 Introduction02:15 The first 100 days report card for the Democratic Party03:00 Democratic voters are not happy with party leadership04:30 Which democratic leaders have performed well?07:20 AOC has become the heir apparent to Bernie Sanders10:30 Pete Buttigieg, JB Pritzker teeing up a 2028 run?12:45 Gavin Newsom is trying to distance himself from his progressive brand15:00 Ruben Gallego could break through on the national stage16:30 The Democratic brand is still toxic with voters18:25 Charlie Brooker joins the show! 18:45 Is Charlie the 21st century George Orwell 20:25 Is Black Mirror meant to be a warning? 22:25 The show isn't about technology, it's about the human response to these tools 25:25 First episode concept came from a podcast Charlie listened to 28:25 The concept of paying for healthcare is foreign outside of America 29:55 Facebook and X were fun at first, but then they turned up the dials for anger and grievance for profit 31:55 How long did Charlie have Black Mirror as an idea before it came to fruition? 33:55 Parallels between Black Mirror and The Twilight Zone?36:00 We thought social media would be great for society… then it turned out quite differently 37:00 How worried should we be about AI? 40:15 The worry with AI will be two things. If you've managed to watch any of the excellent seventh series of Black Mirror yet, you might have spotted our super sub Ben Bailey Smith popping up there... and just for you he's collared his fellow dystopians Charlie Brooker and Emma Corrin for a chat about the mind-bending anthology's latest iteration. Brooker is the writer and creator of the show, which has been sending sci-fi shivers down our spines since it first hit British TV screens in 2011, before going global with Netflix in 2016. So for over a decade, “it's all a bit Black Mirror” has been the phrase on everyone's lips whenever real-world technology makes another ever-so-slightly terrifying leap forward. Emma Corrin stars in episode three of the new series, ‘Hotel Reverie', in which a cutting-edge filmmaking technology called ReDream allows modern day actors to star in high-tech remakes of classic films. Actor Brandy (Issa Rae) steps into the world of a 1940s movie—where she meets Corrin's golden age star Dorothy. Charlie and Emma chat to Ben about Hotel Reverie and the rest of the brand new series. They talk golden age Hollywood, the shipping forecast, and erm... bowling? It goes places. Listen now for the whole story! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

New independent research conducted by Talbot Mills reveals only one in three parents have established rules around their kids' social media usage. While the overwhelming majority of New Zealanders believe parents should decide when young people can start using social media, there is also support for intervention and increased education. Make Sense co-founder Holly Brooker says many parents are struggling to keep up with evolving technology. "It's hard to implement that across many different platforms and devices - and often, parents aren't actually that aware of what their kids are doing online." How do you learn to feel the pain instead of just filling it? What does surrender look like when we've entered a story that we never imagined for ourselves? On this first ever live Nothing is Wasted podcast episode from the Nothing is Wasted Book Launch event, Davey and Kristi Blackburn are joined by Daniel and Brittany Brooker to discuss the messy road of healing and redemption. The Brookers know pain--having both lost a spouse at a young age while parenting small children. Their process towards healing and hope and finding one another along the way has been full of incredible joy and difficult heartaches. Finding friendship with the Blackburns, another couple who understands the impact of trauma on a marriage and children and who are also blending together a family, has been a gift in the journey of grief, loss, and redemption. In this conversation, the Blackburns and the Brookers discuss why we have to feel our pain and not just fill it, the importance of surrender in our deepest valleys, and how God gives us people along the way that can be a part of his healing plan for us. If you've ever struggled to allow yourself the opportunity to really feel the emotions that come from a loss or your unique path of suffering, this episode will help you to realize that healing cannot happen until you admit there is hurt and allow God to meet you in the messy middle of it.
