His newest book, Fully Engaged: Using the Practicing Mind in Daily Life How you can't change anything that you're not aware of That most of us spend our day as someone in their thoughts as opposed to someone who is having thoughts Meditation being the vehicle for growing in self-awareness Learning to recognize the truth that "I am not my thoughts, I am the one who has thoughts" The strengths of being observer oriented rather than in a state of reactivity That people who think they've had a "bad meditation" have actually had a very good meditation That meditation is never a done task The value of thinking of meditation like you do exercising The innate sense in us that is misinterpreted That the desire to expand is built into our DNA The power of the question, 'And then what?" That real perfection is the ability to expand infinitely It's the interpretation of the experience that makes it feel the way it does Making decisions about how to handle a "road block" beforehand How we can control our emotions and doing so is a skill The difference between a feeling and the truth The importance of setting goals with accurate information How you have to be in a situation to learn how to function in that situation That struggle is a sign that we are expanding and learning and up against our threshold Please Support The Show with a Donation
Tom Sterner Are you fully engaged, present in this moment, completely content? Our culture encourages our minds to be overactive, anxious, longing for the future or regretting the past.Thomas Sterner, bestselling author of The Practicing Mind, shows us how simple shifts in perspective — such as learning to center our attention on the process of what we are doing instead of what we are trying to achieve; using goals as guides instead of reminders of what is left to be done; and learning to work without judgment about the process — can completely transform the experience of going through each day. He says, “Everything in life comes from practice. No matter how small or inconsequential we think it is, everything we do, from brushing our teeth to getting through a scary job interview, comes from practice, the deliberate repetition of an action with an awareness of what we want to achieve.” And it works! We really have a problem with something that is We have so much on our plate and so many things going that we want closure. We want the report done. We want the kids picked up. We want the house cleaned.Whatever it is we want it done because that way we can take it off our plate and we'll have one last thing we have to contend with. That's why something like meditation is difficult for people because they feel like “when will I get done with this, when am I good at it?” When you say “it's just something you do forever, that's a very difficult concept and it's an uncomfortable concept until you begin to see the benefits of it. When you begin to see the benefits of it and how it impacts your life and your self power, then that starts to dissolve and you start say “I get this. I want to participate in this forever because I want this ability to continue to expand – Tom SternerTom Sterner is the founder and CEO of the Practicing Mind Institute. This week on Relationships 2.0 my guest is Thomas M. Sterner author of Fully Engaged: Using the Practicing Mind in Daily Life. About the book: To be fully engaged in life means that we have clear goals as well as the focus and skills to accomplish those goals with ease and a sense of calm awareness. In his first book, The Practicing Mind, which remains a bestseller in its category, Thomas Sterner set out clear guidelines for developing focus and discipline to achieve any life goal. As Tom traveled and spoke about the book, he kept track of the questions readers and participants at his seminars asked. The answers to those questions — or more accurately, the exploration of those questions — became the basis of Fully Engaged. This new book explores specific techniques, such as thought awareness training and setting goals with accurate data, and demonstrates how using these techniques will not only help you reach your objectives, but will keep you engaged in each moment of your life, throughout the process of accomplishing those goals. Being thus engaged will result in less stress and more satisfaction in every aspect of life. About the author: Thomas M. Sterner is the founder and CEO of the Practicing Mind Institute.
