As you may know in addition to teaching people how to become awesome speakers, I am a writer, and that's how I first discovered Jo Gatford. I was writing my second play, and needed some concentrated time to focus on getting it written, queue Writers HQ. Jo Gatford is an award-winning writer of short and long fiction and the co-founder of Writers' HQ. It's an organisation dedicated to providing low-cost writing courses and resources to arse-kicking writers with no time or money. In the past five years Writers' HQ has given away over £10,000 of writing courses and retreats to under-represented and systemically excluded writers, and seen hundreds of students go on to be published and win prestigious literary prizes! Jo has worked as an editor and copywriter for over 15 years and has been teaching creative writing workshops for almost a decade. You'll probably be aware that the best talks are full of stories, and in this show Jo is sharing her thoughts on storytelling, what can get in the way of creation, as well as a few tips and hacks to get your stories moving. Jo Gatford is a writer from Brighton who wants to live on your bookshelf. Since winning a publishing contract for her debut novel ‘White Lies’, Jo has won awards for short her short stories and has begun working on a second novel. Feeling a lack of accessible writing groups, Jo joined forces with fellow writer and Brighton writing retreat founder Sarah Lewis, to create Writers’ HQ, providing the writing retreats and courses it turns out others need too. We hit: self belief (even if it’s just enough to learn how to improve), thickening your skin through short and flash fiction working and submissions, the guilt people feel about enabling themselves to do something creative, fostering people’s excitement to write, and the teacher who took the time to help a young Jo go through her Star Wars-inspired novel. ‘WHITE LIES’ BY JO GATFORD http://www.jogatford.com/stockists/ JO’S RECOMMENDATIONS Authors' Licensing and Collecting Society (ALCS) https://www.alcs.co.uk/ FOLLOW JO Twitter: https://twitter.com/jmgatford Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jogatfordauthor Website: http://www.jogatford.com WRITERS’ HQ Website: http://www.writershq.co.uk Free courses here: https://writershq.co.uk/free-writing-courses/ Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/writershq Twitter: https://mobile.twitter.com/writers_hq Insta: https://www.instagram.com/writershq/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/writers-hq-ltd/ Creative Loving Spirit is produced by Paul Macauley.
