Style That Speaks: How to Dress for Impact on Stage with Kay Korsh - 318

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 10, 2025 62:21

Let's be honest — most speakers spend a lot of time crafting their talk, but when it comes to what they wear on stage? That's often a rushed afterthought… or a full-blown panic. Are you second-guessing whether your outfit actually helps or hinders your message? Ever watched back your talk and thought, “What was I thinking with that jacket?” Or maybe you've stuck to the same ‘safe' outfit for years, even though it doesn't really feel like you anymore? Well, this episode is for you. Because how you show up visually matters. Not in a “fashion week” kind of way, but in a connection, confidence and credibility kind of way. And to help us nail that balance between comfort, authenticity and speaker presence, I've brought in stylist to the speakers — Kay Korsh. Kay's not your average personal stylist. She's dressed A-list celebrities, worked with luxury magazines, and now she's on a mission to help speakers look the part, feel amazing, and avoid wardrobe disasters that distract from their message. She's the real deal — equal parts savvy, stylish and strategic. What you'll discover: The #1 thing your outfit might be silently saying about you (and how to fix it) Why you ‘shouldn't' dress like a model... and who you should model instead How to develop a signature style that makes you stand out — without feeling uncomfortable A simple way to stop your outfit undermining you on stage How to travel without looking like you slept in your suitcase (yes, even in linen) Why certain colours can drain you on stage — and how to make them work with your brand Plus… how Kay helped one client land her biggest gig just by changing her outfit (it's a cracking story). How styling for speakers differs from people in the entertainment industry. How speakers get the balance right between sharing their authentic self and personality, whilst still meeting event and audience expectations when it comes to their wardrobe choices. Cost-effective ways to elevate your professional appearance, if you're on a budget So whether you're a keynote pro or just starting to get your message out there, this episode will help you sharpen your image, simplify your wardrobe, and show up with more power on stage — without losing your personality. I see so many business authors and experts set out to use speaking to have more impact, step firmly into the thought leadership space, and monetise their message, only to get frustrated when they struggle to get the results that they want.  Some struggle just getting their talk together, unable to work out which bits of their book ‘baby' to put in and leave out.  Others manage to create a talk, only for it to fall flat when they share it on stage.  What's often the cause of these issues - and how do you overcome them? That's what this episode is all about! In this episode, I cover: Why the page to stage transition is so hard.  The three biggest gaps that make it hard to turn a book into a compelling keynote.  How to close those gaps to craft an authentic message that lands in minutes (not chapters). The ingredients of a profitable talk. What to do next. If you've been stuck in indecision, or not getting the results you want then listen up! What I discovered is that her journey of managing and mastering anxiety is not only inspiring, but could really help those of you who are struggling to manage anxiety around speaking.  I know so many speakers and aspiring speakers struggle with this and it can really sabotage results, or worse get in the way of you getting started in the first place.  Heather is a Holistic Nutritionist, Yoga & Meditation Teacher, and Anxiety Warrior. Trigger Warning - this show briefly discusses difficult topics including self-harm and suicide. Gethin Jones is a survivor, but what few people would have believed, (including Gethin), was that he would also become an international speaker and thought leader.  Growing up in the care system, he spent a total of 8 years in prison, battled intravenous heroin addiction, and was trapped in destructive patterns that seemed destined to lead him to more prison time or an early death. He found the will to change his life and a way to transform his own narrative arc, and today he shares his story and offers hope and a different future to others incarcerated and employed within the justice system. Gethin leads Unlocking Potential, a company that works within prisons, probation services, local authorities, and charities across the UK, Australia, and America. He delivers keynote talks, workshops, training, eLearning, and consultancy, aimed at helping individuals, teams and creating a justice system that is fair and fit for purpose for everyone.  If you are struggling to overcome imposter syndrome, or finding it a challenge to get traction with your message, then listen up because you will get inspiration and insight from Gethin's journey from inmate to international speaker.  Enjoy!   What you'll discover: The story of Gethin's transformation from inmate to international speaker. What prison pipelines are and how Gethin is trying to change the justice system.  How he busts the myths to shift the narrative about reform.  How he positions his talk and services to connect with a business audience.  The mindset and practical steps that enabled Gethin to build a speaking career from one networking meeting in 2016. Gethin's advice if you feel that you have a message that no-one wants to hear because it is difficult and challenging.  How Gethin approached the first talk he gave.  Why Gethin always approaches speaking as a pupil with something to learn. The definition of ‘self-expression' is the expression of one's feelings, thoughts, or ideas, through words, choices or actions, especially in writing, art, music, or dance. Sounds easy doesn't it?    The trouble is that we are all so bogged down with messages about how we should look, think, speak, and act; that it can make it difficult to let go of expectations and simply be ourselves… and for women this conditioning has many additional layers!  What about you?  How fully self-expressed are you? Do you want to speak on stage but feel like an imposter positioning yourself as an expert in your niche? Maybe you do speak, but on stage you find yourself playing safe, or trying to be what you think a presenter should be instead of sharing your personality with the audience? Well, my guest today will be sharing some ideas to help you to be more you.  Michelle Minnikin is a  Chartered Organisational Psychologist, speaker coach, and author of Good Girl Deprogramming. In this show she shines a light on what that is and how it has disempowered women for years, decades, and generations.  And whether you're a man or a woman, who is burdened by how you are told you should be … you will get tips in this show, for how to deprogram that conditioning and set yourself free!   What you'll discover: How Michelle became a rebel and why Why Michelle is to women like Orpheus is to Neo in the matrix What's on the other side of good girl conditioning.  The resistance she has encountered to her book and ideas.  How you can tell if you're a good girl.  How good girl conditioning may be holding you back. It shows up in the content they share and how they share it, and it will end up undermining their authority, authenticity and the value and credibility of their message in the eyes of the audience.  It also surfaces in the way that they approach gig outreach, sometimes making assumptions and barricading doors before they've even attempted to open them. Fortunately, I'm able to help them deal with this, and I want to help you too. Please be aware that this episode does discuss the topics of death and suicide. Each of us has a story to tell, but for many people no reason compelling enough emerges for us to embark on the journey to sharing that story with others.  But for some people, there comes a time where something happens and it ignites a burning desire to share their story, so that others can learn what we've discovered or  avoid the pain that we've encountered. That is what happened to Don Ryan.  He was a regular guy with a job as a therapist, and a family, who had lost some people he loved. But when a third person he loved decided to die by suicide, Don knew, on all sorts of levels of his being, that he needed to share his story to help other people like him and contribute towards a big change. That's when he wrote a book called, ‘The Secret Struggle: Surviving the Suicide of a Loved One', where he pairs his personal experience of losing three members of his family with the professional insights gained across three decades of work in the social services field.  After writing the book, Don knew he wanted to turn the book into a talk, both to share his message more widely, and as a means by which people could discover his book. In this show we will talk about his journey and how he tackled creating an engaging and entertaining talk for this challenging topic.    What you'll discover: Don's own experience of losing someone to suicide and how it has impacted his life.  Where his personal and professional experience intersect.  How Don approached sharing his story and the challenges he encountered.  How the current social conditioning around this topic affects the support that people get. Why the figures we have for numbers of suicides don't reflect the real situation. The most important thing that Don believes needs to happen to start to turn the tide around this issue. The challenges Don faced in turning the book into a talk. The True Levers You Need to Pull for Positive Change with Ruth Taylor - 291

We are living in tumultuous times, we are facing some of the biggest challenges ever as a species, and as individual countries, organisations and people.  And despite the huge incentives to come together to work through these problems, we are in a lot of ways more divided than ever before.  Many speakers today are talking on some of these big topics and wicked problems, looking to shift audience perspectives and inspire them to get into action and make positive change happen. To achieve this, conventional wisdom has suggested that we need to incentivise people to make a change by tapping into material desires because that is what society is geared to admire and aspire to.   But what if that isn't true, what if there are more powerful levers to pull to effect change? My guest, Ruth Taylor, is going to share another perspective on drivers for change that will help you share your message with more power and impact. Ruth has worked in the field of social and environmental change for close to 15 years. She is driven by the question of how more people can be encouraged to think, feel and act differently when it comes to the multiple and interconnected challenges we are experiencing globally.  Currently, Ruth splits her time between working for the Common Cause Foundation, a small not-for-project working to rebalance the values we see championed in our cultures, and as a freelance narrative strategist, supporting a range of different organisations from NGOs to cultural institutions to consider how their work could help shift harmful narratives towards more regenerative and just alternatives. Ruth also loves to write and her work can be found on Medium. I know you are going to get a lot of food for thought here, so listen up!   What you'll discover: Ruth's journey into social change. What ‘narrative change' is all about.  How the common cause foundation came into being. The distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic values Why leveraging intrinsic values is more powerful than extrinsic values. How you should use intrinsic value led messaging to grab attention in the corporate world. What ‘woke' capitalism is and whether it's a good thing.  Tips for speakers to make their message more transformational. The values 101 training course and what you can do next.   All things Ruth: https://medium.com/common-cause/this-barbie-wants-narrative-change-cd5693535889  https://ruthtaylordotorg.files.wordpress.com/2022/01/transforming-narrative-waters.pdf  https://www.tickettailor.com/events/commoncausefoundation https://commoncausefoundation.org    Books & Resources*: Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. All of us want to be healthy, happy and live a long and active life, but getting clarity on how to achieve that is a struggle. The information we get is often tainted by corporate interests pushing us in the direction of their products or pills, and all of this can leave you feeling like you're in a maze full of dead ends, getting spun around with no way to find the right path to wellness. In the meantime, many of us are getting diagnosed with obesity and chronic diseases that can feel like a prison sentence.  When I heard Dr Brooke Bussard speak, it felt like there was light at the end of the tunnel. I had so many ‘aha' moments that I felt sure my head would explode!  Brooke qualified as an MD in internal medicine, so that she could help to make people better. However, despite all her medical knowledge, she couldn't find out what was causing her own chronic pain.  One day she had her own light-bulb moment, and it changed the trajectory of her life and the tools that she used to make people well.  She is a sought-after speaker, author, and member of The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and the American College of Lifestyle Medicine.  I am so thrilled to have her on the show, so that she can share more about how she engages her audiences and clients, and transforms them from confused consumers to empowered eaters.  Enjoy! When I met David Van Bennekum on Linked In and he told me he'd written a self-help book on National Security, I thought ‘That's a bit unusual, followed by blimey he's got some guts … that's a challenging topic'.  My curiosity was well and truly piqued though, so I had a look at his LinkedIn profile and saw that he was a former United States Marine Corps Infantry and Logistics Officer. He was a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan and he'd retired from active service as a Lieutenant Colonel.  Then I saw that besides that, he had a law degree and also a Masters in National Security Law from Georgetown University. He obviously had the knowledge, but as I messaged him back to find out more, I'm not going to lie … based on previous conversations with some ‘experts', I was fully expecting him to bore the pants off me! But … the opposite happened. When he started sharing about it, he didn't waffle on about facts and stats, no … he made me laugh and even better, gave me a light bulb moment about something truly important.  And that's when I knew I had to get him on the show, because being able to make something complex, technical and difficult, engaging and relatable to an audience, is a key skill for writers and speakers.  If you want to get a different perspective on how to make your subject more entertaining, then sit back and listen ‘cause you'll love this show.    What you'll discover: Why David decided to write the first self-help book on National Security How he decided on the big idea of the book Why people are sceptical about it and how he addresses that.  Why the six degrees of Kevin Bacon game is relevant to National Security David's definition of National Security and why he thinks it applies universally. The other day I had a talk planning call with a potential client, and he said: “I just want to get consistent results. Sometimes I start my talk and I can feel the energy shift, and I know I've engaged them. But other times, I just can't get their attention, and I want to understand how to do this consistently every time I speak.” The truth is that grabbing your audience's attention in the right way, (or ‘hooking'' them in, as I call it), is one of the biggest stumbling blocks for a successful talk. The first 180 seconds of your talk is perhaps the most crucial, and that's because in those two to three minutes you are communicating a lot to your audience without even realising it.  In this show, I'm going to show you how to make the most of that time, and to avoid the bear traps I so often see speakers falling into at the start of their talk.  Enjoy! Most of us have experienced sales ‘tactics', and likely we've either recoiled against them and scarpered (physically or digitally), or have gone ahead with our needed purchase, even though a little bit of shine has worn off the relationship with the person that used them on us. Our experiences have made us sceptical of anyone with something to sell, and allergic to feeling ‘salesy' ourselves.  But whether we like it or not, we're all in the business of selling something to someone, whether that's ourselves as a speaker, our book to a reader, or our products and services to clients and customers. So … I guess that means you have to ‘suck it up' and jump on the soft and hard sell bandwagon if you want to succeed. Well no … you don't.  That's because there is another way that will likely yield you more reward in sales and personal satisfaction than anything you've come across before. And that new approach is called Karmic Selling created by my guest Stan Gwizdak. Stan Gwizdak is CEO of The Kormac Group, a results-driven management consulting firm that embodies his clean heart and commitment to serving others. As a chief executive and Six Sigma Master Black Belt, Stan has spent more than 30 years leading business transformations at General Electric, BAE Systems, Honeywell, Textron, Aurora Capital, Goodyear Tire and Rubber, and more. Stan is here today to talk about Karmic Selling and the successes and failures that helped him design his system and grow his company. Whether you're a speaker, sales executive, entrepreneur, you'll discover why when you do good, even more good will come your way.   What you'll discover: Why Stan believes that the traditional approach to sales needs to change.  What made Stan leave a company just before he was due to take the top job. I had a similar issue come up with two clients this week, and it's a mistake I see people making regularly, not just with their speaking, but in other critical content too. Stop Being Humble and Step into Your Power with Lisa Bragg - 277

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 14, 2023 64:15

SUMMARY Is it possible to brag in a way that attracts people to you, rather than turning them off? Lisa Bragg, author of Bragging Rights believes so, and she is here to redefine bragging and share exactly how to do it the right way.     SHOW NOTES We have been conditioned since childhood to keep quiet about our achievements. We are taught things like, ‘nobody likes a show off', ‘stay humble' and ‘self praise is no praise'. And the majority of us conform, stay quiet, assuming that our good work will be noticed, and we will get our reward in good time. When we see those people who are shameless self promoters we judge them and ‘tut' and assume that they will be smited by the God of Humility… (whilst secretly wishing people knew about the great things we had done).  But then we notice they are not being called out or shamed for being a ‘show off', in fact they're getting more attention, and they are the ones getting rewarded with promotions, or new clients.   And then we get frustrated, bitter, and envious, which affects the way we are being and communicating and turns people off. Or … we go out all guns blazing and tell everyone everything we ever done all at once… which also puts people off. The big question is … why are we told that we should stay quiet and humble when it harms rather than helps? And how can we share our authority,  and experience  Well that is what my guest Lisa Bragg is here to answer for us. Lisa has literally written the book on how to talk about success. Her book Bragging Rights: How to Talk about Your Work Using Purposeful Self-Promotion launched in May.  In addition to being an author, she is a speaker, advisor, professional mentor and founder of MediaFace, a Toronto-based content and consulting firm. She was also a TV reporter and anchor for 15 years. I hope this show helps you step out of the shadows and share all the excellent stuff you are up to! Enjoy What you'll discover: The catalyst for Lisa to embrace ‘bragging' and why she had avoided it before. Why Lisa believes that modesty is a negative habit? The double standards at play in society when it comes to bragging and ‘the range of acceptable behaviour'. Why you shouldn't market yourself for where you have been and what you should do instead. The myths around bragging that could be holding you back. Why finding a partner can help you with promotion. The three biggest mistakes people making around bragging. Three tips for promoting yourself the right way. How often, when it comes to writing in your business, has the blank page beaten you? I've seen so many people get stopped, or never share what they have written because they don't think it's good enough, or they are worried about being judged.  Just like when you speak, in your business writing too, you get an amazing confidence boost from knowing that your message is good, that your content will make you stand out and connect with your target audience.  When that happens you're excited to put yourself out there.  So how do you shift from stuck to successful? How do you go from getting underwhelming results with your business writing, to your audience saying … “this person gets me and my problem, I think I need to work with them”? That's where this show comes in. My guest today is Kyla Skinner, copywriter and business writing mentor.    She helps business owners harness the power of personality to better connect with their audience, stand out in today's increasingly noisy market and attract new clients – so they can grow their business, not hold it back. As a fully accredited introvert, Kyla had herself felt shy, nervous and reluctant about showing her own personality. But that changed when she discovered the huge impact it made on growing her fledgling freelance business. Now, she's an experienced (and award-winning) strategic copywriter, who's built her copywriting and brand language business, The Jarrah Consultancy, primarily through word-of-mouth referrals. Over the past 20 years, Kyla has helped to position and promote hundreds of brands, including many big name, global market leaders. Today, she also encourages coaches, consultants and small business owners to tap into all this insight and expertise via her dedicated membership community, Copy Café. Enjoy!   What you'll discover: How Kyla became a copywriter and why personality matters to her. The problem with generic writing and using tools like chat GPT. What it means to ‘show' your personality in your writing and the difference it makes to your message. Why small business owners struggle to connect with their audience in their copy. The three words that Kyla wrote for a Subaru ad that tells a big story.  How to approach ‘daring to be different' if you are more introverted.  The difference between bland business writing versus writing with personality. The gap that Kyla found small business owners falling into, and how she filled it.  Examples of results business owners have got by stepping out of their comfort zone. Three tips for how to get more personality into your writing in a way that feels natural and not forced. The surprising differences Kyla experienced as a copywriter creating her own signature talk.
