Send us a textVox of the Chameleons stops by to discuss his long career, his evolution, their new record, the world, and more. *****Having released their first studio recordings in over 20 years in 2024 (Where Are You? of new material and Tomorrow Remember Yesterday which consisted of re-recorded archival tracks), Chameleons have been gearing up the release of their upcoming album Arctic Moon later 2025 which will be their first studio full-length since 2001's Why Call It Anything. He explains, "It's quite different from anything Chameleons has done before, and I know this will probably polarize the legacy audience, but we're quite excited about how it's developing. I think the songwriting is much more mature in a lot of ways, which is to be expected, I suppose, given our age, but I, for one, really believe we're taking the band forward, and I'm quite excited about it." Not planning on playing too much from the new album (“we don't really want the songs spoiling on such platforms as YouTube until the record is actually out”), the new album will undoubtedly be embraced by old and new fans alike. “Our approach to making the music hasn't changed,” Vox hints, “although having found a regular producer in Christophe Bride at Oxygene has helped our development tremendously. His studio in Manchester, UK, is a great environment to work in. We feel our sound is fresher and more contemporary, which seems to resonate very strongly with our younger audience that are turning out to see us in such great numbers.” Long cited as a hugely influential act, having inspired the likes of Verve, Oasis, White Lies, The Slow Readers Club, Interpol, The Killers and Editors, among countless others and known for their transformative musical catalog and intense and emotionally charged live performances, Chameleons have created a legacy that extends beyond their four studio albums. Following their debut single "In Shreds" in 1982, the band released three seminal albums: the widely acclaimed Script of the Bridge (1983), cited by many sources as a masterpiece way ahead of its time, and its follow-up, What Does Anything Mean? Basically!' (1984), Strange Times (1986), and Why Call It Anything? (2001). Their unique sound quickly captivated the public through their mix of melancholic yet energetic and powerful tunes, hypnotic, ethereal riffs, and the potent, timeless lyrical style. Chameleons are considered one of the most influential guitar bands of the 80s and 90s, contributing substantially to the post-punk, shoegaze, and indie scenes. They are often regarded as one of the most underrated bands ever to emerge from Manchester, England. Chameleons are Reg Smithies (guitar), Vox (bass, vocals, lyrics), Stephen Rice (guitar), Danny Ashberry (keyboards), and Todd Demma (drums).******If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comUpcoming guests can be found: https://dmneedom.com/upcoming-guest Follow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. Hello, I'm R.E. Fort, and welcome back to my podcast. Happy Holidays to all. In this episode of my Featured Tracks playlist, December 2024, I wanted to bring in some tracks that I haven't shared in a while and some of my all-time favorites. So, in this month's playlist we have, Living in Strange Times, Just Stay, Run with Me, Why Don't You Just Let Us Play, Told Ya and lastly, Just Kick Back and Relax. As always, you can find links to this playlist for YouTube, YouTube Music, Spotify, Pandora, iTunes, or Amazon Music sites, in this post and on my website at refort.co/playlist. As always, Without Music Life Has No Soul.
Some have called this the weirdest housing market in recent history due to the unusual mix of high interest rates and declining affordability. And yet, we still have record high home prices across the 20 largest housing markets in the country. This month, we're diving into the U.S. housing market, a topic very relevant to many investors given a house is often the largest single asset one owns. In this episode, we're excited to shed light on the US housing market, what makes it challenging, what makes it unusual, and what needs to change for it to improve. We're joined by Preston Caldwell, Morningstar's Chief US Economist and Brian Bernard, Director of Equity Research specializing in the industrial sector, which includes homebuilders.

Davezilla discusses his unique mash up tarot and the unexplained. Davezilla (David Linabury) has created a new tarot deck, Tarot of the Unexplained: A Deck of Cryptids, Ghosts, UFOs, and Other Urban Oddities (for release in August 2024). Tarot of the Unexplained is designed to represent the most commonly seen and experienced unexplained phenomena: apparitions, Fortean phenomena, and cryptids. It incorporates these modern concerns as suits: Wands, Swords, Cups, and Pentacles become Sasquatch knocking sticks, Ghosts, Portals, and Flying Saucers. Pages have become Fans, Knights are now Hunters, Queens are Advocates, but Kings are Skeptics, and their role is to take a hard look at the situation and ensure you aren't letting your imagination get the best of you. We're happy to present an interview with Mark Burgess of legendary UK act Chameleons on this week's podcast. The band was in town on the first leg of their Strange Times album tour, but are also hot on the heels of their first new material in over two decades, so there was a lot Mark was enthused to discuss with us. In addition to offering our own thoughts about the Chameleons show, we're also throwing in our two cents about the Praga Khan/Lords of Acid tour which made its was through Van.
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Web-surfing tips for strange times, published by eukaryote on June 1, 2024 on LessWrong. [This post is more opinion-heavy and aimlessly self-promoting than feels appropriate for Lesswrong. I wrote it for my site, Eukaryote Writes Blog, to show off that I now have a substack. But it had all these other observations about the state of the internet and advice woven in, and THOSE seemed more at home on Lesswrong, and I'm a busy woman with a lot of pictures of fish to review, so I'm just going to copy it over as posted without laboriously extricating the self-advertisement. Sorry if it's weird that it's there!] Eukaryote Writes Blog is now syndicating to Substack. I have no plans for paygating content at the time, and new and old posts will continue to be available at EukaryoteWritesBlog.com. Call this an experiment and a reaching-out. If you're reading this on Substack, hi! Thanks for joining me. I really don't like paygating. I feel like if I write something, hypothetically it is of benefit to someone somewhere out there, and why should I deny them the joys of reading it? But like, I get it. You gotta eat and pay rent. I think I have a really starry-eyed view of what the internet sometimes is and what it still truly could be of a collaborative free information utopia. But here's the thing, a lot of people use Substack and I also like the thing where it really facilitates supporting writers with money. I have a lot of beef with aspects of the corporate world, some of it probably not particularly justified but some of it extremely justified, and mostly it comes down to who gets money for what. I really like an environment where people are volunteering to pay writers for things they like reading. Maybe Substack is the route to that free information web utopia. Also, I have to eat, and pay rent. So I figure I'll give this a go. Still, this decision made me realize I have some complicated feelings about the modern internet. Hey, the internet is getting weird these days Generative AI Okay, so there's generative AI, first of all. It's lousy on Facebook and as text in websites and in image search results. It's the next iteration of algorithmic horror and it's only going to get weirder from here on out. I was doing pretty well on not seeing generic AI-generated images in regular search results for a while, but now they're cropping up, and sneaking (unmarked) onto extremely AI-averse platforms like Tumblr. It used to be that you could look up pictures of aspic that you could throw into GIMP with the aspect logos from Homestuck and you would call it "claspic", which is actually a really good and not bad pun and all of your friends would go "why did you make this image". And in this image search process you realize you also haven't looked at a lot of pictures of aspic and it's kind of visually different than jello, but now you see some of these are from Craiyon and are generated and you're not sure which ones you've already looked past that are not truly photos of aspic and you're not sure what's real and you're put off of your dumb pun by an increasingly demon-haunted world, not to mention aspic. (Actually, I've never tried aspic before. Maybe I'll see if I can get one of my friends to make a vegan aspic for my birthday party. I think it could be upsetting and also tasty and informative and that's what I'm about, personally. Have you tried aspic? Tell me what you thought of it.) Search engines Speaking of search engines, search engines are worse. Results are worse. The podcast Search Engine (which also covers other topics) has a nice episode saying that this is because of the growing hoardes of SEO-gaming low-quality websites and discussing the history of these things, as well as discussing Google's new LLM-generated results. I don't have much to add - I think there is a lot here,...
In a timely sermon titled "Strange Times ...Strange Things, Strange People," Pastor Femi Paul illuminated the challenges of the times we are in, drawing from 1 Peter 4:12 (TPT): "Beloved friends, if life gets extremely difficult, with many tests, don't be bewildered as though something strange were overwhelming you!" The key theme resonated with the congregation, and also echoed in this prayer by Apostle Anselm Madubuko: "May you not be swallowed up by these strange times and this unsettling season as they come, in Jesus' name." In conclusion, Pastor Femi reminded everyone of the reassuring promise found in 1 Peter 4:12-13 (MSG): "When life gets really difficult, don't jump to the conclusion that God isn't on the job. Instead, be glad that you are in the very thick of what Christ experienced. This is a spiritual refining process, with glory just around the corner!" In these uncertain times, the message inspired faith and resilience, reminding believers that amidst trials and tribulations, God is ever-present, refining and preparing us for the glory that awaits. Let's hold fast to hope, knowing that beyond the challenges lie opportunities for growth and divine breakthroughs.

Join our Patreon and get bonus episodes and other perks! You can also buy copies of the Beyond Bigfoot & Nessie book and Kate's other books! Further reading: Not Deer, or a Deer? Days before Halloween, creepy trail photo reveals deer standing on 2 legs in NC woods Sharon A Hill's Spooky Geology (not about the not-deer but a lot of fun even so) The white-tailed deer uses its bright white tail to warn other deer of danger: White-tailed deer sometimes stand on their hind legs to reach vegetation or fight: Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. Happy Halloween! It's time for our spookiest episode of the year! It's rated five out of five bats on our spookiness scale. If you like scary stories on Halloween, make some cocoa and popcorn and sit back to be spooked. If you're not really a fan of the scarier stuff, you might want to skip this one. Some people also really don't like hearing about diseases, and that's one of the things we'll be discussing. We're going to talk about a really weird cryptid called the not-deer. Before we get started, though, we have a little bit of housekeeping, as the big podcasters call it. First, I want to reassure everyone who has sent me suggestions that I'm trying to get to them as soon as possible. I love how many people listen and want to share their enthusiasm about animals, but I do feel bad that some people have been waiting a really long time for their suggestion to make it off of the massive humongous ever-growing ideas list into an episode. At the same time, I've been thinking of ways to make money off the podcast without running ads. I make Strange Animals Podcast because I love helping people learn about animals and science, and I also really value the people who are able to support the podcast through Patreon. But I do put an awful lot of work into each episode, so much that it's basically a second job. I thought about it, and decided to make a new Patreon tier that's a little different from the others. It's called the terror bird tier, and when I drew the art for it I forgot that terror birds didn't have actual teeth, but we'll call that artistic liberty. It's a $25 a month tier, and not only do you get access to the bonus episodes that all patrons can listen to, after three months at that tier you can message me your episode idea AND tell me what week you'd like that episode to run. I've limited the new tier to 25 backers, to make it fair for people who don't have the money for that, and honestly I don't expect to get very many people at that level at all, because that's a lot of money, but I thought I'd give it a try. Finally, the Beyond Bigfoot & Nessie book is still available, as are my other books, and in 2024 I'm planning to attend some conventions again to sell copies of the book. I'll let you know where I'll be as I find out, in case you want to come say hi. I'm also very slowly working on a sequel to the book, tentatively titled Small Mysteries, which is all about mystery animals that are really small, like frogs and insects and teeny fish. It probably won't be ready to publish for a few years, so I'm working hard to make sure it's got a whole lot of footnotes with references. That's one of the things I regret not doing for Beyond Bigfoot & Nessie. Now, with all that out of the way, on to the spookiness! The not-deer is a cryptid, or mystery creature, that's mostly reported from the Appalachian region of the United States. I live in the southern Appalachians near the Smoky Mountains, but I'd never heard of the not-deer until a few months ago. I subscribe to Sharon Hill's Strange Times newsletter, and also love her Spooky Geology website where you can learn all the science behind weird events like earthquake lights.
UFC 294 was a weird one. Islam Makhachev and Khamzat Chimaev both scored big victories over short-notice replacements, but the event also was marred by low blows, fence grabs, illegal knees, some super weird ringside doctoring, a couple people showing up with staph, rumors the UFC had once again banned flags from the Octagon and – of all things – Paolo Costa trying to brawl random fans in the stands. So, yeah, it was bizarre. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

News oddities abound today, which means we're being distracted. It is a July filled with strange events. What's happening at home was first done overseas. From Upper Volta to Burkina Faso, coming into focus soon. Bazaar missing toddler story and going to the movies. Will the donations be returned? All those drownings and a chef that swims. Was that near or on the estate? Can we investigate? News stories seem off some how. Nobody is talking about Maine's corporate election debate. A foreign spending veto exposes investor's intent. Bernie drops some old hints back when Monsanto drew attention. Lab grown or real meat is not your concern. The tragedy in Quagadougou. Omar's divorce. A feminist president is assassinated. Obama's momma involved. Centralized currency experiments in Africa. CIA's created gov't and the related slaughter of Christians. The Dogon myths involve math and science. Descending Gods from the sky. The mystery star of origin. An amazing degree of knowledge. Counter narratives have reached a bazaar level. It's almost like we know what's coming. There are two wild days incoming, so stay grounded and be ready. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

This week Beth and Wendy discuss the murder of 28 year-old Monique Baugh in Minneapolis on the last day of the year in 2019. She was lured, kidnapped, then murdered. The case took a turn and had even more people involved in the crime than originally thought. So this one is a little bit different. Usually we have more victims than perpetrators - today we have more perpetrators than victims. (note: time stamps are without ads & may be off a little) First, we dive into the setting (11:30), the killers early life and the timeline (18:18). Then, we get into the investigation & arrest (34:00), "Where are they now?" (47:21) followed by our takeaways and what we think made the perp snap (50:32). As usual we close out the show with some tips on how not to get murdered () and our shout outs (54:47). This episode was researched & scripted by Minnie Williams. Thanks for listening! This is a weekly podcast and new episodes drop every Thursday, so until next time... look alive guys, it's crazy out there! Are you a little bit confused about exactly what is healthy and what isn't? In a sea of disinformation, marketing hype and rage bait, combined with aggressive censorship of researchers, doctors and health professionals, finding your way to the truth isn't easy. Over the past few years, the internet has been hijacked by cowardly, unelected overlords who shadowban, censor and silence us in a sad attempt to dumb us down and keep us in the dark. Returning to the show this week is our friend Ben Azadi, a bestselling author, health coach, award-winning podcast host and founder of Keto Kamp. In 2008, Ben went through a personal health transformation, shedding an incredible 80 pounds and completely transforming his health. Now he helps teach other people how to do exactly the same thing and live a healthier lifestyle. So I think you're going to like this one. What if instead of intentionally distracting and demoralizing us, these tech platforms were actually used as a force for good? Well, returning to the show this week is our friend Ben Azadi.
I've spoken with Dn. Nicholas Kotar a few times on this channel. He is an Orthodox deacon, writer, storyteller and podcaster for Ancient Faith Ratio. He recently published another book in the Raven Son series called Son of the Deathless that's freely available on his website. In this conversation we talk more about storytelling in our current culture and how we can approach more traditional storytelling while living in a postmodern world. We also talk about the new Lord of the Rings series, Rings of Power, Russian novels like Laurus, different kinds of stories like fairy tales and myths compared with contemporary fiction and much more.
