The Seneca Park Zoo recently welcomed the first-ever North American river otters to be born at its facility. Leaders say it's a conservation success story that has been decades in the making. It comes at a time when a shift in federal priorities has affected environmental and wildlife protections: funding cuts to USAID and a funding freeze for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have halted projects centered on animals facing various threats, including extinction. Can the local project serve as a model for continued conservation work, despite changes at the federal level? Our guests discuss it. In studio: David Hamilton, general curator at the Seneca Park Zoo Larry Buckley, Ph.D., senior associate dean of the College of Science at RIT Laura Gaenzler, community science coordinator for the Seneca Park Zoo Society Tom Snyder, director of programming and conservation action for the Seneca Park Zoo Society

Dr. David Hamilton, retired surgeon and award-winning historian joins us to to discuss his upcoming book The Enigmatic Aviator: Charles Lindbergh Revisited (out May 21, 2025—on the 98th anniversary of Lindbergh's legendary flight to Paris). Dr. Hamilton unveils the lesser-known side of Lindbergh—his pivotal contributions to medical science, organ perfusion technology, and even the design of early centrifuges. We explore Lindbergh's engineering brilliance, his secretive private life, and how his scientific legacy was buried beneath decades of political smears and tabloid noise. From barnstorming to building perfusion pumps, from fighting with the Luftwaffe to shaping the future U.S. Air Force, Lindbergh's life was more complex than the myths suggest. This deep dive is both revelatory and respectful, with stories you've never heard—because until now, no one had dug this deep. Dr. Hamilton at the Smithsonian - Unusual, in that the Spirit of St. Louis was down for cleaning - NOT hanging from the ceiling as it usually is!

On this episode of Devotions with Dre, I interview my dad. My dad and I love to geek out about Bible study, so you'll hear us chat about Mt. Hermon and Jesus saying "on this rock I'll build my church." You'll also hear the spiritual origin story of the Hamilton family (Hamilton is my maiden name btw), and how faith in Jesus Christ spread like wildfire from my dad to his parents to his sister and then others. Finally, my dad David talks about how it took him a long time to truly let God lead in every area of life, and stop letting his quick temperament take over. Leave a comment and let me know if this was as heart-warming a conversation for you as it was for me.
Fantasy Baseball Live! – December 8, 2024Segment 1 – News and Notes1.The A's stunned the baseball world, or at least me, by spending money. They signed Luis Severino for three years and $67 million. I wrote a long post about him for our Patreon members. What are your thoughts on the signing?a.I've seen comments on Justin's 365 page that he's on the Do Not Draft list. Do you agree?2.The Orioles were busy adding some right-handed power, signing Tyler O'Neill to a three-year 49.5 million.a.What does the Orioles outfield look like?b.O'Neill has some nasty splits. Last year with the Red Sox, he hit home runs, but 16 of them came against LHP in 156 PA and 15 in twice a many at-bats against RHP. Plus, he hit .317 against LHP and only .208 against righty.c.They also add Gary Sanchez to a one-year deal for $8.5 million. His splits are there two, but not as severe as O'Neill3.The Giants make a splash by signing Willy Adames to a seven year, $182 million deal.a.What are your thoughts on this deal?4.I hate to discuss rumors, but John Heyman, who is a shill for Scott Boras, is reporting that contract discussions are approaching $700 million. Crazy stuff. Final call…where does he sign?5.The Mets signed Clay Holmes for three-years and $38 and want to make him a starter. Maybe they are taking a chapter at how the Royals developed Seth Lugo into a starter. What do you think?Segment 2 – Fantasy Baseball Questions of the AL East1.Boston Red Soxa.Triston Casas – 2025 stat line: HR, BA and RBIb.Who would you rather draft and roster for 2025: Ceddanne Rafaela (#172 ADP) or David Hamilton (#467 ADP)?i.If it's Hamilton, are you worried that one of the big prospects will steal playing time away from him?c.Does Yoshida get enough at-bats to warrant a roster spot? His ADP is 534d.Tanner Houck (#212 ADP) and Kutter Crawford (#251) pitched well last season. Who would you rather draft?e.Give me a sleeper in the organization (minor or majors)2.New York Yankeesa.Jasson Dominguez and Dylan Crews are going nine slots away. Who would you rather own?i.Jasson Dominguez stat line: AB, HR, SBb.For all the heat Giancarlo Stanton takes, he's had four seasons of 25 home runs in averaging 110 to 120 games. Last season, he hit 27 in 114 games. Is the consistent power worth the low 200s average and diminished RBI/runs because of lack of playing time? Do you take him in the 20th round and pair him with someone else to play the other 40 games he'll miss? Together, you could have a 30/90 player that you get late.c.Who is least likely to be in the starting lineup on opening day (DJ LeMahieu or Trent Grisham)? According to RosterResource, both are slated to be starters.d.Clarke Schmidt put up great numbers last season – 93K in 85.1 IP and a 2.85 ERA. He's a cutter/sweeper guy and both are pretty good pitches. His xERA is 3.78. Is this someone you are interested in?i.We will look at where he's going and pitchers around him. He's going in the 15th round and is the #90 pitcher off the board – 70 to 75 starter.e.Give me a sleeper in the organization (minor or majors)

Is your measure of success focused purely on your own achievements? Maybe you're at a time in your life when you're questioning legacy, purpose, and who you are beneath your job title. Maybe you're thinking about what it means to contribute and to matter in society. Baroness Lola Young was one of the first black women members of the House of Lords. She's been an actress, an academic, and a cross-bench peer. She's also an active campaigner against modern slavery and unethical fashion. Her new book, Eight Weeks, an account of being raised in foster care and children's homes between the ages of eight weeks and 18 years. In this conversation I talk to Lola about the influence of her challenging past on her identity and choice of career. We probe into what it means to matter – I'm curious if mattering might be an antidote to the hyper-individualization, loneliness and disconnection so many people are feeling. What could “mattering” look like in your own life? Could being of service (more intentionally) help you to feel enough? Let's find out. 00:00 Intro 4:47 Who is Lola Young? 6:08 Lola's thoughts on identity – being black, female and “in care.” 7:45 Jerry Colonna's big question, “To whom do I belong?” 8:21 How Lola's early experiences shaped her identify and feelings of enoughness. 14:46 Description of her book, Eight Weeks: Looking Back, Moving Forwards, Defying the Odds. 18:45 The connection between enoughness and the hyper-individualistic society we live in. You may have heard about the health benefits of being kind. Not only can it lower blood pressure, and boost immunity. It can also positively alter your relationship with yourself, which piqued my interest for those of us who've spent decades driving ourselves relentlessly. Is kindfulness a solution to feelings of not-enoughness? Dr David Hamilton is a speaker, columnist, and author of twelve books, including his most recent, The Joy of Actually Giving a F*ck. He's delivered kindness sessions for Google, Bank of England, the NHS, and many others. In this episode, David and I discuss “kind genes”, how mindfulness doesn't help everyone to be kinder, and rethinking what success can feel like. Ever fake a smile? We all do. What harm can it do? Well, it could do you some harm if you are the one doing the faking. Listen as I reveal the downside of faking a smile. https://www.tampabay.com/archive/2011/02/22/study-finds-fake-smile-is-bad-for-business/ While modern medicine is responsible for many miraculous things, there are some blind spots – some blunders. For example, the skyrocketing rate of peanut allergies is primarily due to some bad medical science. Same with over prescribing of antibiotics, the reluctance to prescribe hormone replacement therapy for women – all bad science. And there's more! You need to be aware of these errors and be armed with the information to protect yourself. Here to provide this alarming data is Dr. Marty Makary. He is Professor at Johns Hopkins and has been a visiting professor at 25 medical schools. He is also a member of the National Academy of Medicine and author of two bestselling books. His newest book, which is already a bestseller is called Blind Spots: When Medicine Gets It Wrong, and What It Means for Our Health (https://amzn.to/4gqSjhP) Your mother probably told you to always be kind. While that is good advice, it appears that kindness has a more significant impact on you than you ever knew. It's not just being kind either. Just witnessing kindness has a cascade of effects on you that you need to hear about. So come listen to my guest Dr. David Hamilton. He is the author of 11 books and his latest is called The Joy of Actually Giving a F*ck: How Kindness Can Cure Stress and Make You Happy (https://amzn.to/3TxKZHw) Why do we drink so much cow's milk? We're diving back into our archives to bring you some of our most memorable and impactful stories and episodes we've ever shared on The Story Collider podcast. This week, we're presenting stories about passion for science that keeps us going, even in the face of overwhelming struggle. Part 1: When Cailin Gallinger struggles with her gender identity in college, her volunteer position in a plant lab becomes a lifeline. Part 2: In the midst of homelessness and abuse, Rose DF dreams of a life in science. These stories do include mentions of suicide, rape, sexual abuse, physical abuse and domestic violence. In case you'd find them helpful, now or at any point in the future, we have some resources available on our website. Cailin Gallinger is a Master's student in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Toronto. She studies the geophysical processes of planets in our solar system, from impact craters on the Moon to volcanoes on Mars and beyond, and has performed in several scicomm events in Toronto, including the LGBTQ-themed Science Slam at Glad Day Bookshop and David Hamilton's Solar System Social. She is currently soliciting submissions for a forthcoming zine, Corona, focusing on queer and trans scientists living and working on the margins, and hopes to continue combining her passions for both science and art in her post-grad life. Rose DF is a born explorer with a passion for accessible and inclusive science and education. A first generation scientist born and raised in the Dominican Republic, currently pursuing studies in Biophysics. After opening up about her life for a feature in "Stories in Science" Rose's social media presence has increased since, and she now uses it to raise awareness in the topics of inclusivity and diversity in STEM as she constantly challenges some of the stereotypes associated with being an "non-traditional" academic and a Latina in the US. It matters who your friends are. This episode starts with some interesting Gallup research that shows how the people you hang out with affect who you are in both good and bad ways. Source: Tom Rath author of Well Being (https://amzn.to/3EekZb7) Ever feel stuck? Most of us have, whether it's stuck in a job or a love relationship – or just a general feeling of being stuck in life. So how do you get unstuck? That's the important question I explore with Britt Frank. She is a therapist and author of the book, The Science of Stuck: Breaking Through Inertia to Find Your Path Forward (https://amzn.to/3Efv33v). Many alternative therapies are looked down upon – and sometimes, rightfully so. After all, there isn't a lot of proof they work. Still, some things that have been labeled “woo-woo” or mystical do seem to have benefits even though no one is exactly sure how they work. These include things such as visualization, massage, aroma therapy, nature, kindness and so on. Sometimes the promises made regarding the power of these therapies are overstated. Still, there may still be something to them. Here to talk about this is Dr. David Hamilton. He is a writer and speaker and author of several books including Why Woo Woo Works (https://amzn.to/3JLtBXI). It is pretty clear that people who eat fast tend to eat more. Seldom is that a good thing. There is a simple technique to help fast eaters slow down and eat less and maybe end up losing weight. Listen and I will tell you what it is. https://arstechnica.com/science/2010/12/imagine-eating-an-mm-taking/ PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS!
