Welcome to the LEGENDS: Podcast by All Day Vinyl, hosted by Scott Dudelson. In this episode, Scott sits down with the legendary Colin Blunstone, co-founder and lead singer of The Zombies, to discuss his incredible life and career. On a previous podcast episode of LEGENDS: Podcast by All Day Vinyl with my guest, Zombies co-founder Rod Argent, we discussed the early days of The Zombies up through the recording of their masterpiece "Odessey and Oracle." In this chat with Colin Blunstone we start off discussing the recording of "Odessey and Oracle" and work our way through the band's break up after the completion of that album and Colin's short journey outside the music industry. Another focus of this chat is Colin's excellent solo output in the early 1970's and we dive deep into the albums "One Year" and "Ennismore" as well as Colin's work with Alan Parsons Project. Colin also opens up about Rod Argent's 2024 health scare and the impact on the band's future, the intriguing saga of the fake Zombies in the late 60's that featured members of ZZ Top, and his latest EP, "Less Is More." Don't miss this insightful conversation with a true music legend. Subscribe, rate, and follow us on Instagram and YouTube at All Day Vinyl for more episodes and updates!
Baxie talks with Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Colin Blunstone from The Zombies! Colin talks about the amazing history of the band--including how they broke up just before releasing their biggest hit, "Time of the Season". Colin also talks about the band reformation, their classic 1968 album "Odessey and Oracle, and about his own successful solo work. He also talks very candidly about his long partnership with Rod Argent--who has officially retired from live performances due to his health. Colin, on the other hand, continues to perform (both with The Zombies and as a solo performer). In fact in November he'll be performing his wonderful 1971 debut solo album "One Year" in its entirety. He'll also be performing the Zombies first album 1965's "Begin Here" in its entirety! This is an amazing interview with one of music's most recognizable voices! Avec The Zombies, The Robins, System of a Down et Johnny Cash. Rod Argent is the superb keyboard player in The Zombies, one of the greatest bands of the British Invasion era of the 1960s. They had massive hits with “She's Not There”, “Tell Her No” and “Time Of The Season” - all written by Rod - and they had a sound and a sophistication that was unlike any other band at that time. Rod and the band were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2019. Rod went on to form Argent and had another massive hit with “Hold Your Head Up”. He has played with The Who, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Ringo among others and has also recorded a classical music album. My featured song is “Waiting For Me” from my album, Bobby M and the Paisley Parade. Welcome to a Very Special Episode of the podcast celebrating the show's 3rd Anniversary! I started the podcast in March 2021 during the depths of the pandemic, when musicians like me couldn't play live. It was a bleak time for all of us. I needed to find a creative outlet and so I started this podcast. From the beginning it grew quickly and exponentially. It's been ranked for some time now in the Top 1% of all podcasts. I have listeners worldwide on every continent in 200 countries, and it has won several awards! My guests have included many of the world's most famous musicians and other creatives.Last year to celebrate the 2nd Anniversary I played excerpts from several guest interviews. But for this 3rd Anniversary show I wanted to do something different - and fun. So here's what I decided. After each interview I ask my guest to record a short promo for the podcast. I use these promos at the beginning of other guest interviews. Everyone does their promo a little differently in their own style. After all, they're artists! So I thought it would be fun to put together a montage of promos featuring a slew of my guests. The entire list is below.I want to thank my guests and my listeners for the success of the podcast. As I like to say - Keep On Rockin'! On today's episode, I talk to musician Rod Argent. Originally from St. Albans, Rod became the founder, keyboard player and one of the principal songwriters of the seminal 1960s British rock band The Zombies at the age of 16. While the band only stayed together a little more than half a decade, they became international stars, and their final album Odessey and Oracle is both one of the most acclaimed albums of the 1960s and of all time. After The Zombies broke up, Rod formed the brilliant prog band Argent, which played through the mid-70s, and since then, Rod has recorded ten albums under his own name. While The Zombies have reformed here and there, in 2004, they began to record music together again, and their latest album Different Game was just released in March this year, and like everything the band does, it is a real delight! Ringo Starr, Rod Argent, Sheila E, Billy Squier, Edgar Winter, Hamish Stuart. On July 16, 2006 Ringo and the All-Starrs joined the High Rollers at the Mohegan Sun, transforming another Sunday night at the tables into a bit of rock and roll history. Martin Quibell joins the co-host roster officially, and we talk about this tour, the assembled talent, and eighties MTV pretty boys.
On this week's episode we are joined by Colin Blunstone, Colin is an English singer, songwriter, and musician. He started his career in 1962 while still in school as a singer and founding member of The Zombies where he remained until the band split in 1968. The group had British and American hits with "She's Not There" and "Tell Her No". Shortly before the band split, they released their masterpiece, Odessey and Oracle, featuring the mega-hit “Time of the Season” and the beautiful "This Will Be Our Year”, with the album being credited by many musicians as the best of that decade. In 1971 Colin released his debut solo album "One Year” which was co-produced and partly co-written by The Zombies co-founder Rod Argent. Hits such as "Say You Don't Mind", "Caroline Goodbye" and the haunting "Old and Wise" recorded with Alan Parsons Project, would follow. By the start of the new Millennium, Blunstone and Argent were inspired to resurrect The Zombies, which has led to several critically acclaimed new albums including the 2023 release "Different Game" which has been met with very positive reviews. A special thanks to Sacha at Hush PR for arranging the interview. Let Christy Take It are proud to bring you Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Colin Blunstone. Today on the show—two British Invasion legends: Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent of The Zombies. The band formed in the early ‘60s in St Albans, and remarkably, they are still out on the road and making new music. The band's new album is called Different Game, and it's out on Cooking Vinyl Records on March 31st. The album is being released in advance of a new feature documentary as well, called Hung Up On A Dream, directed by musician and filmmaker Robert Schwartzman in collaboration with Tom Hanks' Playtone media company, slated for release later in 2023. We've had the pleasure of seeing The Zombies a handful of times—unlike so many of their peers, they're still truly active. How do you sustain that kind of run? That was our focus in this chat, which also touches on their classic single “Tell Her No” and landmark LP Odessey and Oracle, their relationship to super fan Tom Petty, and of course, we had to ask them about the fake Zombies that toured in the wake of the band's late ‘60s breakup. We'll be back next Wednesday with a new episode featuring Sharon Van Etten.
Today on Transmissions, we're joined by Saskatchewan-born songwriter Andy Shauf to discuss getting sober, God, and how these big topics relate to his latest album of introspective folk pop, Norm. Fans of his ‘70s-styled songcraft will still find lots to love here, but as we discuss, the production is deeply rooted in modern experimentation and the anything goes sonic possibilities of digital recording: “I like the way that records transport you. It doesn't mean you have to listen to a record and be transported to the past; you can use new technologies to transport you to somewhere else…if not the future, a present that exists somewhere else.” Transmissions is produced in partnership with Talkhouse Podcast Network. Aquarium Drunkard is powered by its Patreon supporters. We'll be back next Wednesday with a new episode featuring Rod Argent and Colin Blunstone of The Zombies.
It was a thrilling 10 minutes with the legendary Rod Argent, discussing the new Zombies album, Different Game which lands on March 31st. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame legends will be at South by Southwest later this month to perform and also celebrate the debut of a new Zombies documentary. Rod discusses the new album and documentary and recent singles including the gem "Love You While I Can." We also dig into a couple of classic stories from his Argent era. Who Are You to call me a Liar? You Can't Do That cuz last Time of the Season I saw you give it everything you got, you dropped. Reeling and stupid, you couldn't even Hold Your Head Up. Like Honey. Remember Honey? I had enough so I had to Tell her no, and now she's not there. But hey, at least God Gave Rock and Roll To You, and me and Maybelline, and Rod Argent!
The Zombies - from St Albans, Hertfordshire – were one of the most interesting British bands of the 1960s. Their second record, Odessey and Oracle, remains as beguiling now as it did when it was released in 1968, as the group imploded. The spelling mistake in the title is symbolic of the group's legacy; spoiled brilliance. And yet all these years on – over half a century – the group is revered, and celebrated, in the way they perhaps always should have been. How did that happen then? Maybe there is hope for my long defunct teenage indie rock band after all. An active concern since the band regrouped some twenty odd years ago, on March 31st, The Zombies – featuring founding keyboardist Rod Argent and singer Colin Blunstone - release a new record, Different Game, on Cooking Vinyl. There's a UK tour to follow as well. I was lucky enough to get some time with Colin to talk about all of the above – and a whole lot more too... Styx released their eighth studio album, Pieces of Eight, after achieving breakthrough success with 1977's “The Grand Illusion.” This album would also achieve significant critical and commercial success with this album. Two singles would break into the top 40, and one would land just outside it at number 41. All of these were written and sung by Tommy Shaw who had joined the group for the Equinox album in 1975. In addition to guitarist and lead singer Tommy Shaw, other members of the band were Dennis DeYoung on lead vocals and keyboards, James "JY" Young on guitars and vocals, Chuck Panozzo on bass, and John Panozzo on percussion.Pieces of Eight marks a transition for the band, as many consider this album to be the last Styx effort with significant prog rock elements. The band would turn to a more hard rock and pop ballad format on future albums, though their popularity would only grow greater. Pieces of Eight is also considered a concept album, as the band explored how money and materialism affects the pursuit of greater ideals and dreams.Brian brings us this album for today's podcast. Sing for the DayThe second single released from the album narrowly missed the top 40 as it peaked at number 41. It has a joyful waltz feel, and references “Hannah,” which is an amalgam of all the female fans of the band. Pieces of EightThe majestic title track is a deeper cut which was not released as a single. Dennis DeYoung wrote and sings lead on this song. It was inspired by how money can't buy everything, and the regret faced in looking back over a life occupied by the pursuit of wealth while sacrificing love, dreams, and freedom.Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)This first single was released in August of 1978 just ahead of the album. Tommy Shaw was inspired to write it after a friend was laid off from the railroad and experienced frustration standing in line at the unemployment office. The song hit number 21 in the United States charts.RenegadeThe last single would become a staple for Styx tours and remains popular today. It tells of a Western outlaw who has been caught and is about to face execution by hanging. Tommy Shaw claims that the song basically wrote itself. “Hangman is coming down from the gallows and I don't have very long.” ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Ease on Down the Road #1 by Diana Ross and Michael Jackson (from the motion picture “The Wiz”) The Broadway Play “The Wiz” hit the screens with Diana Ross playing Dorothy and Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow. STAFF PICKS:Who Are You by The Who Rob starts off the staff picks with the title track from the Who album of the same name, released 1 month before Keith Moon's death. Pete Townshend wrote this song after passing out drunk in a doorway in SoHo. He was feeling like a sellout after signing a big contract and experiencing an identity crisis. That's Rod Argent from the Zombies you hear on keyboards. Feelin' Satisfied by BostonBruce's staff pick is the third single from “Don't Look Back.” It hit number 46 on the Billboard Hot 100. It is an ode to Rock and Roll with a positive feel and a clapping in the chorus which brings on audience participation in concerts. Milk and Alcohol by Dr. Feelgood Wayne brings us a boogie rock song with a punk feel from an English pub rock band. The song was inspired by blues guitarist John Lee Hooker who the band members often saw in concert drunk on Kahlua and alcohol. Nick Lowe of “Cruel to be Kind” fame wrote this song.Reminiscing by the Little River BandBrian finishes off the staff picks with a bit of yacht rock from down under. This is the second single from their fourth studio album, “Sleeper Catcher.” It went to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was inspired by the romantic era of black and white movies and the songs of Glen Miller and Cole Porter. John Lennon considered it one of his favorite songs. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Two Rapid Formations by Brian EnoThis instrumental is from Eno's seventh solo album, "Music for Films."
The big red beachball of conversation is kept resolutely in the air in this fourth episode of Composing Myself, with Wise Music CEO Dave Holley and Creative Director Gill Graham speaking to the effervescent Rod Argent, mastermind of The Zombies and Wise Music composer in his own right. Subjects of import covered in this terrific ramble through the wilds of Bantershire include:- the 'secret jazz' element of She's Not There, and the Dick James offer that led to the timeless classic's creation- ruminations on what it felt like hearing Bach (“I just melted… this is what music should be!”) and Elvis for the first time- the definitive conclusion on why classical music is “completely stimulating and exciting”- being the next band in after the Beatles finished Sgt Pepper at Abbey Road…. plus learning to sight read, working with Andrew Lloyd Webber, an explanation on why the Zombies decided on that name, and much more!Miss this at your peril!https://www.rodargent.com/The Zombies' upcoming tour dates:https://www.rodargent.com/tour Hosted on Acast. durée : 00:03:23 - La chronique de Thomas Croisière - Aujourd'hui, c'est l'anniversaire de Rod Argent, qui en remporta beaucoup, d'argent, avec son groupe les Zombies. Thomas Croisière en profite pour revenir sur leur premier tube et ses reprises : "She's not there".
I'm delighted to be joined by musician, singer, songwriter, composer, and record producer - Rod Argent. In a career spanning more than 50 years, Rod is the keyboardist, founder and leader of the English rock band The Zombies. Their second album Odessey and Oracle is often mentioned by Paul Weller as his all time favourite. Rod has had an incredible career - continuing to perform live and release new music with The Zombies - he was also once part of Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band and has recorded with The Who, Chris Rea, Roger Daltrey, Paul Carrack and Andrew Lloyd Webber. He's also been producer for the likes of Gilbert O'Sullivan, Tanita Tikaram and Nanci Griffith. In 2018, Paul Weller released his 14th solo album True Meanings, with Rod Argent contributing to two stand out tracks (on an album full of stand out tracks!) - he plays Hammond organ on The Soul Searchers and Mellotron & Piano on White Horses. You can find more info on Rod's music in my show notes at paulwellerfanpodcast.com/episode-92-rod-argent Thanks for listening - make sure that you subscribe / follow and leave a review - and if you want to support the podcast financially, you can buy me a virtual coffee (£3) or our new official merchandise at paulwellerfanpodcast.com/store
Colin Blunstone has one of the sweetest, most distinct voices in rock, yet his band, the Zombies, has a bizarre history. It broke through with “She's Not There” and “Tell Her No,” then went three years before the release of its second album, the masterful Odessey and Oracle. By then the Zombies had split, and when “Time of the Season” became a hit almost a year later, fake versions of the band, including one featuring members of a soon-to-be-famous group, toured the U.S. Now Blunstone and songwriter/keyboardist Rod Argent are Zombies again, and in a lively, good-humored conversation, Blunstone recounts his spat with Argent over "Time of the Season" and a rollercoaster career that led to a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.
The Zombies were part of the “British invasion” movement of the 1960s and enjoyed some major success for a short period before they broke up after only a few years. But the band's acclaimed 1968 album Odessey and Oracle is considered to be one of the greatest albums ever recorded and hits like “She's Not There,” Tell Her No,” and “Time of the Season” remain all time classics. Rod formed a new band called Argent, which hit big in 1972 with “Hold Your Head Up.” Colin released three solo albums, co-produced by Rod, in the early 1970s. Around 2000, Colin and Rod resurrected The Zombies, ultimately reuniting with the remaining original band members. Their sixth studio album, 2015's Still Got That Hunger, revived public interest in the band and even led to Odessey and Oracle re-entering the Billboard 100 – nearly 50 years after the album's release. In 2017, The Zombies went on an Odessey and Oracle tour, performing for a multi-generational fanbase, and in 2019, they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Iconic British psychedelic pop legends The Zombies have returned to celebrate their long-awaited Induction into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. After receiving their 4th nomination in 5 years, the support for The Zombies' induction among the public and their peers was undeniable - the band placed 4th in the public online poll with over 330,000 votes, while even fellow nominee John Prine called for their induction before his own in a Billboard interview. On March 29, 2019 at Brooklyn's Barclays Center, The Zombies joined Stevie Nicks, Radiohead, The Cure, Def Leppard, Janet Jackson, and Roxy Music as the 2019 Class of The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Fittingly, the Induction Ceremony took place exactly 50 years to-the-day after The Zombies' classic “Time of the Season” first hit #1 on the charts in America. Never content to only look back, and despite a busy touring schedule, The Zombies are also in the studio recording the follow-up to their 2015 Billboard-charting album, Still Got That Hunger. Led by founding members, vocalist Colin Blunstone and keyboardist Rod Argent, The Zombies' 21st-Century line-up features Steve Rodford on drums, renowned session guitarist Tom Toomey, and the newest member, Søren Koch, who joined the band following the untimely passing of their beloved bassist Jim Rodford (formerly of ARGENT and The Kinks) in early 2018. The second U.K. band following the Beatles to score a #1 hit in America, The Zombies infiltrated the airwaves with the sophisticated melodies, breathy vocals, choral back-up harmonies and jazzy keyboard riffs of their 1960's hit singles “She's Not There” and “Tell Her No.” Ironically, the group broke-up just prior to achieving their greatest success – the worldwide chart-topping single “Time of the Season,” from their swan-song album Odessey & Oracle, ranked #100 in Rolling Stone's ‘500 Greatest Albums of All Time.' To this day, generations of new bands have cited The Zombies' work as pop touchstones, and the band continues to be embraced by new generations of fans. Following the break-up of the original band, lead vocalist Colin Blunstone went on to develop an acclaimed solo career (with hits including "Say You Don't Mind," "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted", and “Old & Wise” with Alan Parsons Project) and keyboardist/songwriter Rod Argent rocked ‘70's arenas with his eponymous band ARGENT (“Hold Your Head Up,” “God Gave Rock ‘n' Roll To You”), but the legend of The Zombies continued to take on a life of its own. By the start of the new Millennium, Blunstone and Argent were inspired to resurrect The Zombies. Make sure to check out the Livestream from Abbey Road Studios on September, 18th, 2021. Scot and Jeff discuss The Zombies and Argent with Randy Barnett. Introducing the Band: Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) with guest Randy Barnett. Randy is the Carmack Waterhouse Professor of Legal Theory at the Georgetown University Law Center, where he directs the Georgetown Center for the Constitution. He also writes at The Volokh Conspiracy. Follow him on Twitter at @RandyEBarnett. Randy's Music Pick: The Zombies and Argent It's summertime, and the livin' is easy, which also means that it's the time of the season to discuss not one, but two of the great semi-forgotten bands of pop-rock era in The Zombies and their progressive-rock sequel Argent. The Zombies — led by keyboardist Rod Argent, bassist Chris White, and lead singer Colin Blunstone — may have gotten inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame very recently, but odds are that unless you are a Sixties music snob you still aren't aware of just how brilliant they actually were as a band, how underrated Argent and White were as pop songwriters and lyricists, and how shockingly great their entire discography is. As Jeff says during the show, even though The Zombies scored three big hits in America (trust us, you've heard “She's Not There” and “Time Of The Season” even if only subliminally, and you probably know “Tell Her No” as well), the rest of their career exemplifies most bizarre losing streak in rock history, because practically every single one of the songs they released (and several that they didn't!) were top-tier pop and art-rock compositions, and they ended their career with what ranks among the finest albums of the decade in Odessey And Oracle. But the story doesn't end there! After The Zombies broke up due to lack of commercial success and critical recognition (both would eventually come, albeit too late for the group), Argent and White went on to form a new band, the eponymous Argent, based around the songwriting skills of Rod and Chris and with the added strength of lead singer Russ Ballard bringing his own music to bear. Argent rapidly moved away from the bright, brisk pop-rock of The Zombies into the piano/organ-based art- and progressive-rock style of the Seventies, and yet still managed to put out a remarkable amount of fine music on their own. Click play and enjoy — is this the dream band you've been crying out for?
