TALK TO ME, TEXT ITFriday the 13th brings a collection of stories you likely haven't encountered through mainstream channels. From unexpected political dining companions to scientific discoveries frozen in time, this episode peels back layers of news that deserve attention but often get overlooked. We start with Senator John Fetterman's eyebrow-raising dinner with Steve Bannon at a prominent MAGA establishment—surprisingly, on Fetterman's wedding anniversary. While acknowledging Fetterman's recent stands supporting Israel and his willingness to reach across the aisle, we ponder the wisdom of associating with controversial figures like Bannon. This political odd couple exemplifies the complex nature of today's partisan landscape, where unexpected alliances continue to form and dissolve. The episode takes a darker turn examining the disturbing case of South Carolina Republican Representative RJ May, charged with distributing over 200 files of child pornography under an inappropriate username. This sobering story highlights both the depravity that technology can enable and important questions about how authorities can better protect children while pursuing those who exploit them.On a more enlightening note, we touch on the fascinating discovery of a 30-million-year-old "lost world" beneath Antarctic ice, described as opening a time capsule to Earth's distant past. We also explore longevity research suggesting dietary adjustments as we age, particularly reducing animal protein consumption after 65. The episode concludes with the remarkable tale of a modern-day Frank Abagnale Jr. who scored 120 free flights through a creative airline crew impersonation scheme. What's your favorite sports movie? In this week's (somewhat delayed) episode, Maurice and Chris explore what makes a really good bit of humour. From the genius of Mozart's Musical Joke through to the mischievous Book of Moromon and the magnificently maligning poetry of the Roman poet Martial not to mention the confidence trickster Frank Abagnale Jr. There is a single profanity in this week's podcast. But it's Classical, so surely that's allowed? First recorded on 1st May 2025.

See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Among the exceptional list of Steven Spielberg classics, this film is one that stands the test of time. We have always loved Catch Me If You Can, but now we put it to the test to see if it's our favorite Spielberg movie of them all. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the gutsy, conniving conman Frank Abagnale Jr., and Tom Hanks as the dutiful FBI Agent on his tail, this cat-and-mouse thriller is true treat. Have you ever wondered why Bernie Madoff thought he could brazenly steal his clients' money? Or why investors were so easily duped by Elizabeth Holmes? Or how courageous people like Jeffrey Wigand are willing to become whistleblowers and put their careers on the line? Fraud is everywhere, and it is costly. In Fool Me Once, renowned forensic accounting expert Kelly Richmond Pope shows fraud in action, uncovering what makes perps tick, victims so gullible, and whistleblowers so morally righteous. Shermer and Pope discuss: SBF and FTX • Bernie Madoff • The Tinder Swindler • gullibility • intentional perps, accidental perps, and righteous perps • innocent bystanders and organizational targets • accidental whistleblowers, noble whistleblowers, and vigilante whistleblowers • identity theft • IRS scams • doping in sports • Frank Abagnale Jr. • Edward Snowden and Julian Assange as righteous perps • Daniel Ellsberg as a noble whistleblower • Phil Zimbardo and The Lucifer Effect • how to tell if you have been a victim of financial fraud. Kelly Richmond Pope is the Barry Jay Epstein Endowed Professor of Forensic Accounting at DePaul University in Chicago. Pope's research on executive misconduct culminated in directing and producing the award-winning documentary, All the Queen's Horses, which explores the largest municipal fraud in U.S. history. In 2020 the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and CPA Practice Advisor named Pope as one of the twenty-five Most Powerful Women in Accounting. In this episode, Sandra makes scones and dreams of Ireland while Danielle reveals that she has the same fridge as Lorelai in the earlier seasons of Gilmore Girls. Then Danielle talks about Frank Abagnale Jr., the inspiration behind Catch Me if You Can, the 2002 film starring Leonard Di Caprio. Frank excelled at scams, fraud, and forgery. He preteneded to be a pilot, then a doctor, and eventually turning to cashing fake checks. Until one day he caught the attention of the FBI who offered him a deal in the form of a job to get out of prison. Later, Sandra talks about the Green Children of Woolpit. Legend has it that during the 12th century in Woolpit, England two children were found near an actual wolf pit. According to sources the children were green, and did not speak english. The story goes that Richard de Calne took both children in for a few years, and over time they lost the green tinge to their skin. Sadly the boy died at a young age, but the girl went on to live and get married. Today it is thought that these two children may have been children who lost their parents and may have been Flemish. The only thing more challenging than securing a big hit on Broadway is figuring out how to follow it up with another big hit. For the team of the juggernaut musical HAIRSPRAY, that follow up was a musical adaptation of Stephen Spielberg's hit film CATCH ME IF YOU CAN. And while this story of America's famed juvenile conman may not have been the resounding success they'd hoped for, there is still plenty to sing about. This week we welcome original Broadway cast member Jay Armstrong Johnson (HAIR, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA) to stroll down memory lane and explore the soul of Frank Abagnale Jr, the glory of an amazing female ensemble, and... maypoles?? Special thanks to our listeners for requesting this title! Remember the movie "Catch Me If You Can?" It was based on the life of Frank Abagnale Jr. Abagnale is still conning us -- and making good money doing it. Like any good con artist, the trick is in misdirection. He doesn't want us to see prison files that show he was in jail during much of the time he outlined his escapades. He doesn't talk about stealing expensive camera equipment from a summer camp. He doesn't talk about pretending to be a doctor at Arizona State University performing examinations on potential stewardesses. When asked about these and other contradictions in his life, he cloaks himself in a quilt of love of country and family dedication. He says he doesn't talk about his past life (although he did to Google in 2017) and disavows writing (or reading) a book which bears his name as an author. In this episode, we'll focus on one part of Abagnale's story: the movie, "Catch Me If You Can" in which you'll hear Abagnale tell the same story many different ways. This week, Amber is joined by guest co-host, Michael Mullins! Michael covers Frank Abagnale, the inspiration for the movie "Catch Me If You Can". Frank Abagnale is now an American security and fraud consultant, but is better known as one of the most infamous con-artists of all time. It's been reported that by the age of 19, he had cashed $2.5 million in fraudulent checks while using several different identities. It is believed that he assumed no less than eight identities in his short career as a fraudster, including: an airline pilot, a physician, a lawyer, and a professor. He was captured and sentenced in 1974, but was released after serving about three and a half years of his 12 year sentence, on the condition that he would work alongside the FBI to investigate crimes similar to those that he had committed. But how much of Frank's very public story is true?Sources: www.slashfilms.com / “The Fascinating True (And Not So True) Story Behind Catch Me If You Can” / Shania Russell / August 10, 2022www.WHYY.org / “Catch Me If You Can” / December 31, 2000www.en.wikipedia.org SHOW: Johnny Carson / Episode aired October 4, 1978SHOW: To Tell the Truth / Episode aired in 1977www.youtube.com /Talks @ Google "Frank Abagnale"/recorded November 27, 2017Podcast – Most Notorious / Episode 198: “Catch Me If You Can's Frank Abagnale - Perpetrator of the Ultimate Hoax? / with Alan C. Matthew's speech resulted in a suspension and being removed from the potential list of graduation commencement speakers. What do Aaron Tveit and Leonardo DiCaprio have in common? Besides their good looks, they've both also taken on the role of the fantastical life of Frank Abagnale Jr. in Catch Me If You Can. Ferdinand Wald Demara didn't like his life, so he decided to live someone else's. Over the next 44 years, he was a Monk, a Soldier, a Sailor, a College Professor, and even a Ship's Surgeon. While pretending to be the Ship's Surgeon, with hardly any medical training, he performed many operations on both crew and prisoners. All of his patients survived. After being discovered as a fraud, he became a Prison Guard, soon being promoted to Assistant Warden. He taught school and set up a college. Later in life, Demara became a Counselor for those in desperate situations. In his final days, he served as a Chaplin. I'll also give a brief account on another imposter, named Frank Abagnale Jr.
