So many of us postpone many of the things we’d like to do until something else happens first—we wait until we graduate, or until we get married, or until we have enough money, or until we retire—and then we realize, often too late, that we missed out on the experiences that would have enriched our lives. Well maybe there is another way… Daniel Rintz and Josephine Flohr are quite the dynamic duo. If you are a longtime listener to the show, you may recall my first conversation with them. I am so happy to have them back on to discuss what it is like to ride around the world on two motorcycles, covering over 100,000KM over the course of three years. Indeed this is an interview not to be missed—not just to learn how they did it and what it was like, but also what’s next. Daniel and Josephine are prime examples of living their lives in full and helping others in the process. Those familiar with Living a Life in Full will not be surprised to have the chance to learn from both of these intrepid travelers, as we have had in-depth conversations with three other motorcyclists, one of whom is also a world traveler on two wheels Glen Heggstad, another is a land speed record holder on a vintage BMW, Rebecca Berneck, and in an upcoming episode, Guinness World Record Holder, Leslie Porterfield. And speaking of going around the world, past president of the Circumnavigators Club David Mink has been a guest, Amy Scott talked about How to be Location Independent, and Matt Bailey gave listeners great tips for travel hacking. We discuss Daniel’s first trip, which was the basis for the award-winning documentary “Somewhere Else Tomorrow”  along with their new, highly anticipated sequel, “Somewhere Else Together.” We delve into their travels through the Americas and Africa along with all the associated logistics and planning that went into the trip as well as the filming. We also cover their gear and equipment selection for shooting as well as their bikes (1982 BMW R80GS and 2007 BMW R1200GS). We go into some dicey situations as well—accidents, illness, a flood, along with unstable political situations, war zones and uncomfortable border crossings, and even a run-in with child soldiers. Also part and parcel of their journey was the humanitarian aspects. Daniel started out on the HUMA.tv team, and he discusses the Christmas spent with children from a Nepali orphanage, along with time spent with a minority group in Pakistan, and they describe the life of a Guatemalan mother and two daughters as "distressing and beautiful." Also, in Guatemala, they both became involved with The Integral Heart Foundation, and they tell us about their work. In the context of their newest film, which I had the honor to be a part of and serve as an Executive Producer (full disclosure), I came to appreciate their ethos and values in that “The sequel will ask more philosophical questions, because we’ve answered the practical ones already. Naturally, there will be challenges and hurdles that we overcome, but we’re more interested in what it means.” They are both very generous with their time in sharing this conversation, what they do is truly amazing and an inspiration. 

This episode features Glen Heggstad, a renaissance man who has circumnavigated the globe four times, most of which was on a motorcycle—solo.  But he would be the first to say he was not alone, as he found friendship and family everywhere he went. He’s also a competition wining master martial artist and instructor, author of two books chronicling his adventurous life (One More Day Everywhere: Crossing 50 Borders on the Road to Global Understanding—including being kidnapped and held for weeks in Columbia by rebels (Two Wheels Through Terror: Diary of a South American Motorcycle Odyssey). In fact, this latter experience was made into a National Geographic docudrama, Locked Up Abroad, that has been seen worldwide in a number of languages. Glen’s hardscrabble upbringing has not diminished his humanity, which is also expressed in his inimitable spirit—for example, he donates all royalties from his books to Room to Read. Between 1440 and 1450, Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press. But, history shows that printing has been around long before Gutenberg's invention. As early as 220, the Chinese were block printing, putting ink on wooden blocks and pressing them on cloth and then hundreds of years later, on paper. Before the press was invented, Europeans either painstakingly copied written word by hand or used a method similar to the Chinese block printing called Xylography. Both were laborious and time consuming, and because of this, book choices were limited and costly. But, it was Gutenberg who facilitated books being mass produced throughout Europe at a fraction of the cost.  So, it's with thanks to Gutenberg that we have so many books available to us to learn or to immerse ourselves in for pleasure. Authors can take us on adventures, to the places they have been, describing the sights, sounds and smells in such vivid detail that we feel we are there, experiencing it for ourselves. We also read inspirational books that teach us to appreciate life, to feel good and get the most out of it we can. And books that teach us about things, show us how-to or teach us some much needed skills. For going on to 2000 years, humans have been reading the written word. We are so fortunate to have books easily available to us, to keep a book on the shelf to read over and over again or to refer to when we need to know something. There's something special about holding a book in your hand and turning the page. Or, the next best thing, for those of us limited in space, or travelling, or just trying to keep costs down, are downloadable eBooks. Or if you are tight for time, you can listen to someone read a book on CD or download it to hear it.  And, of course, since motorcycles are our passion and yours, we have been lucky to have some fantastic authors on our show and have compiled a list of some of these authors. But, there are many, many authors out there who we haven't had on the show, who have written valuable, informative or just plain entertaining books. Glen Heggstad had some tough beginnings, including foster homes and living on the street. He travelled at the age of 16 and joined a bike gang in his early twenties but soon changed his ways and took up martial arts. Learning progressed to teaching and soon Glen had the most successful martial arts school in his area and became well respected for his school and his work with troubled youth. Glen then decided to retire from martial arts competition and loaded his motorcycle for adventure heading south for Tierra del Fuego. Except it didn't quite work out as planned, Glen was captured in Colombia by rebel guerrillas and held prisoner. He was tortured, starved, beaten and abused during his five weeks in captivity but he managed to stage his imminent death which won him freedom. After that horrific ordeal he didn't even go home, Glen had his original goal still in his sights and never let go. - He rode to Tierra del Fuego as planned. Incredible story.
