S5 EP5 - For the Silent Sufferers - Making Infertility Visible to Communities of Color With Monique Farook

Monique Farook, the host of the award-winning Infertility and Me podcast, joins Julia to discuss her journey through infertility. Monique faced a multi-year battle with infertility in which she grappled with feelings of shame and anger, experienced racial discrimination by her doctors, navigated a tubal blockage, hypothyroidism, surgery, and natural cycle IVF.   We discuss her decision to return to the medical system following a loss of trust in the medical community following experiencing racial bias in her fertility treatment.  We laugh about the challenges of raising toddler boys and celebrate that her podcast reaches the unseen and underserved communities facing infertility.  In addition, she candidly reveals her story about her marriage, her medical diagnosis, and the premature birth of their son. Don't miss this honest and sometimes emotional episode of Stork'd.     IN THIS EPISODE:   [00:00] Julia shares Monique's accomplishments  [05:09] Monique discusses why she started her podcast and the difficulty of finding podcasts created by women of color  [12:02] The journey of navigating infertility and the discrimination Monique felt, and how this situation affected her marriage  [23:25] Monique finally accepted that God wasn't punishing her; it was a medical problem  [28:32] Making the analytical decision of why you want to be a mother  [30:17] Raising children to become decent human beings that will have an impact on the world  [34:41] The process Monique and her husband went through to become pregnant  [39:12] A son is born and is in the NICU for 129 days  [45:12] Monique speaks about listeners of her podcast. Women need to discuss their grief  [46:31] Monique shares her definition of family    KEY TAKEAWAYS:    Anger, denial, and even jealousy of another woman who can become pregnant are all natural emotions when going through infertility.   Blaming the inability to become pregnant is not a punishment from God. It takes time to see the issue as a medical problem, not a punishment.  It is critical to decide why you want a baby.  Just wanting a cuddly baby isn't reason enough.  Being a mom becomes a job for a lifetime.     RESOURCE LINKS:    Stork'd - Facebook     Stork'd - Instagram     Stork'd- YouTube     Monique Farook - Website    Monique Farook - Instagram    Infertility and Me Podcast    BIO: Monique Farouk is a wife, mom, women's health, and infertility advocate. She started the podcast after her path to motherhood was disrupted by female-factor infertility. Through the podcast, Monique has reached thousands of men and women from all over the world—passing the mic to other survivors to share their stories authentically. I'm so excited for this week's episode because I had the opportunity to interview a brilliant and knowledgeable gal that I've known in the online space for over a year now. Scout Sobel is the founder of Scout's Agency, and they've been the source of many of the amazing guests you've heard on my show. Scout has a long journey with mental health, and I'm so thankful that she's talking about the mental aspects of entrepreneurship and tips for self care. You can check out her new book here!     083: The Emotional Entrepreneur with Scout Sobel   Here's what we chat about in this episode:   Scout's journey of managing her bipolar disorder - medication, daily healing practices, mindset shifts, holistic healing measures, and mental health tools   How to feel safe in your emotions so that you can have a purposeful, meaningful, and fulfilling relationship with your life   Business:How to emotionally handle entrepreneurship - the mindset, perspective shifts, and roller coaster reality that comes with being an entrepreneur   Why and how every entrepreneur should be prioritizing their mental health   The secrets behind Scout's Agency: crafting an engaging pitch letter, the art of cold emailing, and scoring high profile clients and so much more.   Here's a little bit more about Scout Sobel:   Scout experienced her first depressive episode at the age of 14 and was formally diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of 20. Living with a mental illness brought an onslaught of symptoms: anxiety, hypomania, depression, catatonia, psychosis, and suicidal ideation. Her perception of her life weighed down on her so poignantly that she dropped out of college, could not hold a job or internship, was hospitalized, experimented with medleys of prescription medication, and went through two outpatient programs.  One day her husband (then boyfriend) looked at her lovingly and said, “I don't care if you're depressed. If you are depressed and hopeful, I can be in this relationship. If you are depressed and hopeless, I can't do this with you.”  That was the moment her life changed. She started infusing her life with hope and began to take radical responsibility for her emotional state. And after intense self-development work - support groups, holistic healing modalities, prayer, routines, and physical wellness, she found entrepreneurship. Through entrepreneurship, she learned to unconditionally love her life through the pain, challenges, and celebrations. She learned that she wanted to be here.  Today, Scout is the Founder and CEO of Scout's Agency, a female-focused PR agency that specializes in getting women as guests on podcasts. Over the last two years, the agency has served women like Catt Sadler, Kelley Baker, Jessica Zweig, Damona Hoffman, Lauren McGoodwin, Bala, Kelley Baker, and Rebecca Minkoff. Scout led the agency to a six figure revenue in its first year (2019) with a 250% growth in 2020. She is also the co-host of Okay Sis, a top-charted podcast most recently highlighted in Apple's New & Noteworthy collection, with her sister Mady where she openly documents her experience living with bipolar disorder.   And now that she has gotten to a place where she feels safe in her emotions and is not able to only function in society but thrive as an entrepreneur, she is putting all of her emotional tools, learnings, and wisdom into her debut book, The Emotional Entrepreneur, a 25 lesson emotional guidebook for women who want to pursue a life of purpose. These are the personal development tools she has garnered up to manage her mental illness but what surprised her the most is that she realized her mental health tools also became her superpower in business.   The Emotional Entrepreneur launched this week and you can get your copy here! On this episode, Daisy has intuitive conversation with Crystal worker, Artist, Jewelry and Home Designer, Joanne Stone to spread good vibrations to all Moms which are in great need of clearing the negativity in our lives and transforming it into positivity. Daisy asks Joanne to share her story how she went from being a high powered luxury costume jewelry designer for celebrities such as Beyonce, Madaona, Alicia Keys, Rihanna, traveling the world from London to Paris to Miami; to being featured in Vogue and sold in top stores like Saks, Bergdorf Goodman, and Fred Segal yet she was missing something.  She recalls feeling as if she was in a hamster wheel, and her work had lost its soul. Joanne explains on how she deliberatly chose to take a pause in her life to recalibrate and traveled to Bali to surround herself with nature. On her journey, she discovered that she needed to create a business that had soul and connect her customers with Mother Nature’s healing powers. We might not be able to go to Bali, but Daisy and Joanne share with us the importance of having a morning ritual practice to bring more purpose and clarity into your daily life.  Joanne explains that by setting aside 5 – 15 minutes to do some breath work, set a intention, and mediate or pray for a few minutes every morning, can be life changing.  She reminds us Moms that we wash our teeth everyday, we wash our clothes, but when so we wash our minds? Clearing the mind with deep breathing opens space in our heart to welcome peace. Right now given the current situation, Daisy wanted to provide a resource to all by giving you some tips on bringing a higher positive vibration into yourself and your home.  Joanne suggests two stones that are a must to remove the negative and bring in the positive: 1) Clear Quartz  - The Mother healer. Clear quartz is heals all energies in the body.  Since it is clear it is open to the entire spectrum of light. Clear quartz energizes and clears all blockages. 2) Black tourmaline – Helps to get rid of all negativity.  It is a grounding crystal, that helps neutralize electromagnetic radiation. A stone of protection and purification ~ it absorbs negative energy and creates a protective energy shield around your home. Espree Devora, got tagged as “the Girl Who Gets it Done.” Later, when a friend observed her enthusiasm in tackling a number of business tasks for Tony Hsieh, then head of Zappos. Her passion for content creation began when she was in the 6th grade and her father gave her a video camera. She filmed hundreds of sequences featuring “extreme” sports (skateboarding, motocross) and built the first online action sports social network. In 2012, she attempted to start “We are LA Tech,” featuring local startup founders. She shot 12-episodes, but her enterprise partner refused to edit the material. Dead end. Two years later, in September 2014, Espree resurrected “We are LA Tech” as a podcast. By October 2014, it topped Apple's New & Noteworthy. She had learned on YouTube everything she needed to know to run a podcast. In 2015, Espree launched “Women in Tech” in response to the dire “glass ceiling” warnings so prevalent at the time. Her purpose? To “create a positive piece of content whose sole purpose is to show us what's possible, to expand our belief system, so listeners walk away feeling, “'If she can do it, so can I.'” Much of the theme of her work is what Espree calls “vulnerable leadership.” She wants to share “how people have built their companies and their professions in ways that are really empowering, and what can we learn from them.” In this interview, For people interested in getting started in podcasting, Espree recommends the technical equipment and software that she has found to be most helpful, planning and motivational strategies, She provides a series of podcasting training videos.  The first tool in Espree's podcasting toolbag was an app to help her maintain focus on daily goals, to help her deal with her fear of “ creating this thing, and then creating a thing that didn't work out.” Tools she uses today: An Audio Technica 2100 microphone, Sound Studio editing software. As podcasting has grown, the demand for podcasting training has likewise increased. Espree teaches everything from large groups to intensive, private, month-long master classes. She recommends continuous outreach to maintain relationships and lists a number of tools effective for doing this, and offers tips on techniques and frequency . . . in order to be “un—annoying.”  Espree had been scheduled as a speaker at this year's now-cancelled South by Southwest. She has given many presentations there in the past, performed live podcasts, and led meetup groups. She credits her success to being where hard work meets luck and opportunity, a variation of the Roman philosopher Seneca's “Luck Is What Happens When Preparation Meets Opportunity." Espree can be reached on LinkedIn and all social at (Espree Devora), and onTwitter @espreedevora. Her podcasts are on: WeAreLATech.fm http://podcast.wearelatech.com/ and WomeninTech.fm http://podcast.womenintechshow.com/.  Transcript Follows: ROB: Welcome to the Marketing Agency Leadership Podcast. I'm your host, Rob Kischuk, and I am joined today by Espree Devora, “the Girl Who Gets It Done.” She is the Creator and Host of the We Are LA Tech podcast and also the host of Women in Tech. Welcome to the podcast, Espree. ESPREE: Hello, hello! Thank you so much for having me. I'm excited to be here. ROB: Very excited to have you here. Why don't you tell us a little bit about your own journey into becoming “the Girl Who Gets It Done” and hosting the things that you do?  ESPREE: Oh my gosh. A lot of people ask me when I became an entrepreneur, like when I made that decision. I feel like I was born an entrepreneur. I remember walking into Westwood Village with my father and looking into the empty office buildings, picturing what businesses I would put in them. As I went along my journey, I think I just became very resourceful in a lot of different areas, from junior high to high school to college, and eventually the tagline “the Girl Who Gets it Done” came from when I was hanging out with Tony Hsieh, who is the head of Zappos, and a bunch of his entourage. I was taking care of some things and people kept asking me, “Are you his assistant? Are you his publicist? Who are you?” My girlfriend who was with me at the time just said, “She's the girl who gets it done.” [laughs] It just stuck, and it's been that way for a really long time. ROB: Excellent. I think if you get a nickname around Tony Hsieh, you stick to it for the most part. ESPREE: Definitely. ROB: What about the journey into these podcasts that you host? When did you realize that was something you wanted to do and then really caught your ongoing attention? ESPREE: I think the first moment that I realized I was really excited by content creation was in the 6th grade, when my dad gifted me a video camera and I got to explore. I ended up building the first action sports media company online. It was the first action sports social network, and we produced hundreds and hundreds of video content across skateboarding, motocross, all these things. Then in 2012, I had this urge to continue creating content, but at that point in my life I was more interested in the startup world. I had already been in the startup tech world, obviously, building the first social network for action sports, but I didn't understand that. At that time I was just doing things. They weren't a global trend like it is now. Terms like “social media,” “entrepreneur,” “founder,” “accelerators,” these things were not a thing then. In 2012, when LA started to have more startups and have more founder stories, I wanted to capture that moment, so I partnered with someone to create a video series called We Are LA Tech. Unfortunately, that person didn't share the same work ethic I had. We shot 12 episodes, and that person's responsibility was to edit them and none of them were edited. My heart was broken. I waited a year, and I ended up going on a backpacking trip to escape this reality that this video series would never be completed that I felt so passionate about. While backpacking in Europe, my friend Mark who founded a company called BetaList, started showing me podcasts on his iPhone. At the time I was an Android person. He's like, “You've got to listen to these podcasts. They're so funny. You'll love them.” I get back to the States; I get an iPhone because I want to stay connected with my friends in Europe and it was the easiest way to do that at the time. I start listening to podcasts. I didn't realize that years before, I had actually been listening to two podcasts, Podcasts and Product People by Justin Jackson, who actually has now co-founded a podcast hosting company called Transistor. He was one of the early podcasters, and I just loved his show. But at that time I would move the audio files from the computer to my phone. It wasn't the thing it is today, so I didn't even know I was listening to podcasts. Anyway, at the same time, I was like, wow, if I start a podcast too, I never have to rely on a video editor again. [laughs] So in 2013 I started stirring up the We Are LA Tech podcast in my head. It launched in I think September 2014, and by October 2014, it was number one on Apple's New & Noteworthy. It was just really exciting. I'm completely a self-taught podcaster. I taught myself how to edit. I taught myself everything. I just watched a lot of YouTube videos, and I've been podcasting ever since. Then in 2015, I launched the Women in Tech podcast, and the story goes on and on. ROB: What made you realize that maybe it was worth at least experimenting with the Women in Tech podcast? Or were you all-in from Day 1 and you knew it had to be a thing? ESPREE: The Women in Tech podcast was inspired because at the time, these women's groups were becoming a thing. They were never a thing before. I'm like, “Oh look, that's me. I founded companies and I am a girl too, so I want to check out what's going on.” All these groups I would go to at the time, the whole conversation would be about how women are held back or statistics that are in the negative and this and that. I'm like, man, I've never felt held back. The only person I've ever felt held back by is me. If I had heard all these messages about how much was not possible for me, I would have never built the first action sports social network. I wouldn't have raised money. I wouldn't have done all these things because I would've believed it wasn't possible for someone like me. So I wanted to create a positive piece of content whose sole purpose is to show us what's possible, to expand our belief system, so listeners walk away feeling “If she can do it, so can I.” ROB: There's a common thread, it seems, between both of the podcasts. You have, with LA, an underappreciated market for startups – I think perhaps even still to this day, there's some very good companies, but also with a chip on their shoulder. And then with Women in Tech, similarly, there's sometimes a lack of appreciation, a lack of highlighting, a lack of encouragement in both cases, you're putting a positive spin on it rather than saying, “Hey, pay attention because you're not paying enough attention.” ESPREE: Yeah. I think my brand theme – I call it vulnerable leadership, where it's not that I want to just be positive. I don't want to be Instagram perfect. But I do want to share a vulnerable message in a way that we could shift our belief system to turn something that could be perceived as a negative into a positive. I think the process behind that is really important. It's not just about being like “Everything's great! You have it so much better than everybody else!” [laughs] It's about, okay, today sucks or whatever a person is dealing with, but here are the steps I went to, because do I want to feel sucky right now? No. If I don't want to feel sucky, what's something that I can do to potentially shift myself out of that mindset? I think that's what my shows exemplify, just vulnerable leadership: how have people built their companies and their professions in ways that are really empowering, and what can we learn from them? ROB: For those of us who are outside of the LA tech world, certainly we've heard of some of the newer fliers – I think maybe Byrd or Lime scooters is from there. I apologize for not knowing what you know. ESPREE: That's okay. ROB: I've definitely ridden plenty of scooters. But what are some of the companies that are maybe trending right now that people may not fully be aware of, but should be? ESPREE: Oh wow, trending? I don't know who's trending right now because I tend to stay laser-focused on sharing people's stories. But some companies that are iconic that you may have seen – of course, Snapchat is here. FabFitFun is here. There's really huge companies that are popular at least across the U.S., if not globally, that were created – Myspace was in LA. Google has tons of offices here now, and they're really a dominant force in the LA tech scene. YouTube has their Creator Hub here. It's definitely a thriving tech city. My primary interest is the lifestyle and culture of a tech professional, more than what is the latest gadget. However, if you tell me the latest video or microphone gadget, I will be interested, but that's just for personal, selfish reasons. [laughs] ROB: I was going to ask – I think a lot of people, when they hear about podcasting, they feel very intimidated in terms of the whole process, from creation of the content to editing and publishing. What was in your first podcasting tool bag? ESPREE: That's a great question. I'd say the first thing that was in my podcasting tool bag was actually the app. I don't even remember what it was called. It's like Daily Goal. It was some daily goal app. The reason that was the first one in my bag is because I was so afraid of, one, creating this thing, and then creating a thing that didn't work out. What I did was I created a goal every day. It could be like “create podcast artwork,” “get a microphone,” “schedule an interview.” Just one thing. And I wouldn't allow myself to not do the thing. I remember when I got my first podcast poster designed, and I didn't like the design and I thought it was really ugly, but my goal for that day was “post it,” like it's done. So I just went with it. It was about the forward movement; it wasn't about being perfect. I actually happen to really like that flyer now, but at the time I did not. That was my first one. Then as I became more educated by watching YouTube videos, I bought a Snowball mic because I knew my episodes would be in-person and it would be more than one person, so I wanted a mic that picked up more people. A Snowball mic is actually the lowest level mic because it's really meant for musicians, like a guitarist or something like that. It's not meant for multiple people. Those are for technical reasons that I can get into another time. Feel free to tweet me @espreedevora if you'd like to know more reasons why. But it was a Snowball. What I'd recommend to everybody starting out is an Audio-Technica 2100, and that's actually what I'm using right now. Again, I could share with you the technicalities of why in another conversation. Then I had my computer. I have a Mac, so I found an editing program called Sound Studio. I found it on a random forum. They do a terrible marketing job because they're very hard to find. [laughs] But they're an incredible software program. The way I describe it, it's like iMovie for audio. They just make it stupid simple to edit audio. It's great. So I used that. I remember my very first interview, I didn't even know how to record it. I was just confused, and I plugged the Snowball into the computer and I was trying to figure it out. It's scary, but what matters is that we take a step forward. In my speeches, when I give speeches on how to podcast, the thing that I tell the whole audience is on their way home, I want them to take out their phone and, in their voice memo app in their phone, I want them to record their first interview on the drive home, or their first podcast episode. Then I want them to send me that via Google Drive or email or whatever it is, because that's all that matters in the beginning, is taking a step forward and just taking action. ROB: If you take that step forward every day, which you were doing with your app, it's like those challenges when people talk about if you just get 1% done better every day, it really does add up. Are you still editing, or have you managed to delegate that opportunity? ESPREE: First of all, I happen to love editing. I call it “painting audio.” But it is not who I want to be in the world. [laughs] I'm very lucky; an editor that I hired in 2014 has been with me since, and he works with me and edits everything. I have other editors that I've worked with as well. So I do have the editing done. Every so often, I'll tell them that I want to contribute and I'll do an episode here or there, but I do not rely on my own time for editing anymore. ROB: It's the same as my experience. We actually did a quick cycle episode that we recorded yesterday about the financial stimulus involved in the CARES Act and how marketing agencies can claim that money for themselves to keep their team onboard. But normally, I have trained editors – and I think what you said before, audio versus video is very, very forgiving. ESPREE: Completely. ROB: If there's a glitch in the middle of a word, it's remarkable. You can just highlight it, delete it, and it sounds great all of a sudden, whereas if you did that with video it would look insane. ESPREE: Totally, completely. And there's so much that goes into video, from lighting, color correction, angles, audio. There are so many variables, you just cannot get away with high quality video if you don't know what you're doing. It's a huge learning curve. The main components of a podcast – and again, I can dig into this deeper in a different conversation – are the tracks: is each person's voice being recorded on a separate track or is everybody's voice on the same track? How does it sound, the mic that you're using? Are you doing it remotely or in person? Because that will have an impact on your equipment decisions. Things like that. But there's just so much more that goes into editing and shooting video. ROB: As you mentioned, all the information is out there. Everything is essentially figureoutable. I think there's a book to that effect. I first figured out how to record live because I was at the Social Shakeup Conference and I saw somebody there recording live, and I just walked up to them and asked them, and because they'd done it enough, they had a page that listed all their gear, and they had affiliate links. Normally I don't even click on affiliate links because I'm kind of ornery about that, but I totally clicked their affiliate links. It was something done with a mix of generosity and sharing, and if they get a few bucks, to your point, for that Snowball mic or for the Zoom recorder that we use when we're in person, who am I to be upset about that? ESPREE: Yeah, totally. But I don't have an affiliate link for you. [laughs] ROB: Maybe another revenue stream there. ESPREE: Yeah, it's something I've thought about. It's one of the many things that still is on my to-do list for way too long. ROB: But you're figuring it out step by step. How did you make that jump? I think a lot of agencies, marketers, organizations develop a competency without taking it to the next level. You went from creating podcasts to training people to do podcasts. How did you evolve into that shift? ESPREE: I think it's a few things. One, I was just asked by several people. I got into podcasting in 2013, when it wasn't a thing and it wasn't cool. It didn't start to become more – I mean, obviously podcasting has been around for several years, way before that, but it just became this mainstream thing in the last few years. In 2013, it wasn't on the radar. In 2014, it started to bubble up on the radar because of the StartUp podcast. Then Serial came out, so then the mainstream news started talking about podcasting, and it was a domino effect from there. At that time, I think it was just supply and demand. [laughs] Even today, it's supply and demand. People have a really hard time finding any indie production companies for podcasts, so I get a lot of inbound on that because I've been creating my show for several years. You can't find a lot of people who have been both producing and hosting for several years. Maybe they just started 10 episodes ago or something. I have hundreds and hundreds of episodes done and distributed. So sometimes it's just getting there early. Now my “why” is interesting. I get asked a lot to teach. Initially I did it just for the community so that they can learn and express themselves, but I found that it was really exciting to be a part of their journey in creation and to really help facilitate them creating something meaningful so it's not just another audio file, but it's something people feel mentally subscribed to. That's been great. So I do a couple things, whether I'm teaching classes for the general assemblies of the world or USC and organizations like that or I'm doing semi-private masterclasses that are a month-long immersive, and I meet with a small group of people and I have expert guest speakers on. It's just really, really fun. So I've really enjoyed it. That's why I do it, because I love it and love being a part of their journey. ROB: There's so many cool little hidden skills in there. I think you're able to keep going on a podcast because of that rhythm that you put into your life overall. I think people might not think entirely – you're based in the Los Angeles area, and that's content city. That has to partly pervade who's interested in talking to you. When I look at how you've picked up these skills along the way, one skill you picked up that I think a lot of people would look at with some jealousy is you have figured out how to be selected as a speaker at South by Southwest. That's where we originally intended to speak in person. How did you figure out that process? I know people who have been trying for years and can't sort it out. I imagine you did it one step at a time. ESPREE: Honestly, I feel like I got – what's that saying? “Where hard work meets luck and opportunity” or something like that, or preparedness? I've bene working so hard for so many years. I started going to South by as a journalist, and then I became a speaker at South by – I don't remember what year, but I've given many talks there and performed the podcast live and led meetup groups. But the meetup groups I've led have been the podcasters meetup, and like I said, in 2013 no one cared. I said I would do this thing; I was the only person offering myself up to do this thing. Or maybe there weren't a lot of people. And the talks that I've given have ranged from anything from in the early days it was more on entrepreneurship, and now, again, podcasting. It's just about demonstrating where my unique value proposition is, the unique insights, the energy that I bring to the table as a speaker, what makes me a speaker that stands out amongst the rest. So just really think about that for yourself. What is an interesting angle? Actually, I think I'll do a thing for you in a second, just for your audience, so you can have a little sampling of what that sounds like. The last thing is performing my podcast live at South by Southwest. I performed the Women in Tech podcast live last year and then also this year. Again, it's over time, establishing myself as a podcaster, my relationships, the audience that I have. The purpose and mission of why my content exists in the first place is very clear. It's just this stew of hard work, and then it's the luck of being noticed. Sometimes you can even manipulate being noticed. I should say positively manipulate, meaning that you're doing enough outreach, that you're using programs like Pipedrive and Contactually to make sure that you're continuously doing your outreach. That's maintaining your relationships. My mom comes from an entertainment background, and she always said – it was her or maybe my grandmother who said “the squeaky wheel gets the oil.” So when she talks about being in the entertainment business, she says they'd cast the people who called last because that's the person that was on the top of their mind. I'm like, that's really interesting. And it's true; the more you're on the top of people's minds, in a non-annoying way, the more they'll think of you when there's an opportunity. The more you make yourself helpful – I was featured in Forbes randomly, and the reason I was featured in Forbes, that feature happened because I was doing an interview I think a year or a year and a half before, and the interview went something like 3 hours late. So I was just sitting in a waiting room for several hours. I never complained and I just chilled there and I was nice about it. Then the person who kept coming back in to apologize to me was so grateful that I did that that when there was the opportunity for Forbes, I was the first person that was thought of. Just because I waited in a chill manner. [laughs] ROB: Which anybody can do. ESPREE: Totally. So it's like, how are you showing up to life in unique ways that make you stand apart? If it's okay with you, Rob, I'm going to do a quick thing. I'm going to show you how I start my speaking engagements and my podcast, because it's not this tone of voice. Is that okay with you? Can I do that? ROB: Run with it. ESPREE: Okay, cool. Everybody watch your eardrums just a little bit. I'm going to hold the mic a little bit away because I don't know the levels of how we're recording right now. But this is what it sounds like, and the reason why I'm sharing this with you is because this is what sets me apart and makes me a unique speaker and podcaster. I'd say the thing that sets me apart is my energy when I show up to the stage. Three… two… one… “Welcome back to the Women in Tech podcast, celebrating women in tech around the world! So excited for our next guest here today. Welcome…” and then you say the person's name. But that's just crazy, right? That's out of nowhere. Where it's inspired from is growing up, I was super into wrestling. [laughs] ROB: Yes, it sounds like wrestling. [laughs] That's amazing. ESPREE: I was super into wrestling and I loved the wrestlers being announced onstage, and then I was really into Steven Tyler's stage performance and how he would really be into the mic and really be energized. So that's why when I do my podcasts and my interviews, I stand. You never see people stand when they're doing it. I stand. And I do it for a lot of other reasons too, because of your vocal cords. Onstage, I stand. Sometimes I'll kick my shoes off. I'll never stand behind a podium. There's just all sorts of techniques. My friend Mark, who actually built the YouTube Player, gave me the best speaking advice. He said, “People don't remember what you say; they remember how you made them feel.” I think about that with my podcast. I think about that onstage. How am I making everyone feel? Are they feeling the way I intend for them to feel? And if not, what do I need to do? When I show up that way, the guest feels more energized, the audience feels more engaged, and to the event organizer, I'm a unique speaker that brings something different to the table. ROB: Absolutely. I love it. We have a wrestling announcement right here on the podcast. [laughs] I think you mentioned something that is really key that would be easy to get lost in the mix. You mentioned staying on people's minds in an un-annoying way. I think we are in a very perhaps more challenging moment for that, where people who don't have that skill may be a little bit lost. We are sheltering in place right now in our homes to avoid getting and spreading the coronavirus. What you can't count on is bumping into somebody in the halls, in a restaurant you usually run into, at a networking event. How do you think about staying on people's radar in an un-annoying way? Because quite often, I think people give advice of sending a link – and you actually did send me a very good link in our chat – but I think there are often times where that can feel still very inauthentic and people can tell. You're still just sending them a link because someone told you to send them a link to stay on their radar. ESPREE: A hundred percent. I think there's a lot of different ways, and we need to find the tools that are right for our own personalities. The kind of things that I look at – one of them, the first thing I want to say, there's a tool called Bombbomb which does video messaging. It's really great to make something a bit more personal, to show somebody that you care. I find that even when I send a Bombbomb video, if I don't say the person's name, they may think that I created it for a lot of people. I remember I made one for even my friend, who's also a customer, one time. She said, “You know, it was until you said my son's name, I thought it was a video for everyone.” It's really interesting to me because it was personalized. There's tools – like I said, Contactually. There's a ton of other tools. I know Tim Ferriss uses Evernote a lot. I don't necessarily know if he uses it for maintaining follow-up, but Evernote is a great tool. There's WorkFlowy. There's different programs that will spit out who you haven't followed up with lately. LinkedIn is such a powerful resource for all of us. I think it's about really thinking, who do you want to connect with? Why do you want to connect with them, and how often? And are you tracking that follow-up? I use a CRM system called Pipedrive, and like I said, I'm a huge fan of Contactually as well. I think Contactually is just a great follow-up tool. I've heard good things about Nimble. You could find out what's going on in someone's life via Twitter, via Instagram, via Facebook. Really paying attention to their social networks. I call it ego marketing. It sometimes sounds like a bad thing, but all of us – all of us – we operate on our egos. We feel like the world is revolving around us at all times. “What's that person thinking of me? What's that person doing,” blah, blah, blah, me, me, me. If you all of a sudden come to someone and say, “I watched your talk online,” and say the specific talk, and then say what you got out of it and maybe a timestamp, it is just so clear that that is about them. The kind of messages I can't stand – because I get an abundance of inbound messaging for the Women in Tech podcast, or even one yesterday, perfect example, the We Are LA Tech podcast. Someone messaged me asking to be on the show and they weren't in Los Angeles. If they knew the show, they'd know every single episode is from someone in Los Angeles. So obviously you don't care. You're just mass mailing. With Women in Tech, I'll get messages about the controversial topics someone could talk about, and if they knew the show, they'd know we do no controversy, no politics. So it tells me that you really don't care. I'm just some name on your list. So when you're thinking about follow-up, you want to think about: who do you want to follow up with and why? What's a meaningful way to follow up with them? And then tracking that follow-up. And not following up too much. Another example is somebody followed up with me three times in one week, and I hadn't seen any of the messages. Then on the third message they said, “I know you're probably getting annoyed with my messages” – which just shows me it's an automated system. “You're getting annoyed with my messages,” and the truth was I hadn't even seen the other two. My response back was, “One, I'm not interested, and two, I recommend you not follow up in such a short period of time.” [laughs] Imagine if I'm giving a talk, if I'm at South by Southwest this week, I am not really on email or paying attention. If you follow up three times this week, during this particular phase of my life, the chances of me seeing them is so low. That's why it's way more effective to follow up 3 weeks to a couple months apart. But just really be sincere in why you're even following up with the people in the first place. ROB: If you're following up 3 weeks or 3 months or anything like that, also, you have to have a mindset where you're playing the long game. You're not playing the short game where it's “How many times can I message you in 2 weeks and then either ignore you or maybe you've answered me.” ESPREE: Right. ROB: If someone looks at the Women in Tech podcast, I think one thing they'll realize is, number one, your level of commitment there. I think I'm seeing over 400, almost 450 episodes. But also, I think they'll notice that you do the work, and you do the work authentically. What I mean by that is you're not just cherry-picking and trying to ladder up to the biggest name. You have some names on the podcast that are known, but you also have – again, in this theme – people that your listeners might not know but they should. It looks to me like quite often you are going far and wide. You're doing the work of actually reaching out to people across the world, and probably even going there to have those conversations. ESPREE: Rob, I love how you did your homework. [laughs] You would be an email that I would open, because that is so spot-on. I get a lot of messages from a lot of super fancy people, thinking that they're just entitled to be on the show. My personal excitement is sharing a story of a woman that normally doesn't have access. I've traveled to Bosnia; recently I was in Kazakhstan. I've traveled to over 100 countries just to celebrate these women in tech in person, share their stories, be in their culture. People say, “Why not just do remotely?” I wouldn't see the bullets in the buildings on the streets of Bosnia if I wasn't in Bosnia, understanding that the girl I'm interviewing, as a child, she had to be in a bomb shelter to be safe from the war. These are just things you don't get on a 1-hour Skype call or something like that. So really discovering all these magnificent women in tech around the world, giving them the opportunity – I'm really proud that the Women in Tech podcast is, for the majority of guests, the first podcast they've ever been on. It just blows my mind. And it's not necessarily even, by the way, Rob, that these people aren't seasoned; they're just not the internet celebrities of the world. They're not the Gary Vaynerchuks. [laughs] Then I also have the more well-known people, as you mentioned, and I'm excited to share their stories as well. But my “why” in doing the show is not for social status. It's not to look good. It's really to be this bridge for women in tech around the world to be able to discover the resources and mentorship that they need to accelerate. Hearing stories of how women have pulled over to write notes, listening to the episodes, or shared the stories with their family, or investors have reached out to them because they've been on the show – truly social impact. It's amazing. So it's not about “do I look the coolest?” It's about “am I creating the biggest impact?” ROB: That resonates completely with who you are and what you want to accomplish. I think it's also a little bit of a secret – and it's not a secret because we're talking about it, but candidly, it makes booking a podcast a lot easier when you're booking people who are interesting and have a story, but it is their first podcast. They say yes a lot more. ESPREE: Oh yeah, I'm sure. Well, the one thing about women in tech – yes, I think your point is accurate, and, unfortunately, with women in tech – a lot of people ask me, “What's the biggest commonality of all the women in tech that you're met with?” They're expecting some technical answer. Unfortunately, the biggest commonality is that I think as a culture, oftentimes we feel we're not enough. So I will get women who will say “I don't think I'm good enough for your show” or “I haven't spoken before” or something. Then it's my responsibility as a person who wants to be empowering to give them the level of confidence, and also to say, “Listen, I wouldn't be picking you unless I thought you were good enough to be on the show, so how about I make the decision on that?” [laughs] I've had a couple people not want to be interviewed because they're scared, but yes, you are absolutely right that it's going to be a lot easier. You're also right that it's a huge pain point in the podcasting industry for new podcasters, or even a lot of seasoned podcasters, to get yeses from guests. It's a huge pain point. It is one that I do not have, and maybe that contributes to it, you're right. ROB: And you do in-person a lot, which always helps with that rapport. It would be great if we were, but that's not an option right now. We're not getting on planes right now. ESPREE: Totally. ROB: That is okay. We'll hope that we can meet up at South by Southwest next year, perhaps. ESPREE: A hundred percent. ROB: Espree, when people want to check out all the things that you're doing, where should they look to find you? ESPREE: Man, if only I had been smart enough to have one link that says all the things. [laughs] Honestly, look me up on LinkedIn, Espree Devora on LinkedIn. Add me there. It's also Espree Devora on all social – on Instagram, on Twitter, on Facebook. I do really engage on Twitter. And check out the podcasts, WeAreLATech.fm and WomeninTech.fm. ROB: It's all those little things. You put in the work on the domains too. ESPREE: Yeah. ROB: Fantastic. You're consistent on the brand. Espree, thank you so much for coming on the podcast. It's been a true joy to get to know you a little bit, and I know our audience has enjoyed your challenging example of just doing one more thing each day and how that carries through in everything you do. ESPREE: Thank you so much for having me, Rob. This has been great. I'm happy that you made it remote and we were able to make this happen. ROB: That's great. Be well. ESPREE: Bye. ROB: Thank you for listening. The Marketing Agency Leadership Podcast is presented by Converge. Rebecca is a business and branding strategist, TEDx Speaker, New + Noteworthy podcast host and co-founder of the Brand Camp Retreat, branding workshops and retreats for female business owners. Prior to owning her own business, she served as a Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the top grossing division of a Fortune 1000 company, overseeing more than $1 Billion in sales. In addition to frequent public speaking events training entrepreneurs  on social media, branding and business strategy, she is a frequent contributor to publications including Readers Digest, Women's Health, US Business and News, ABC News and more.  In this podcast, Rebecca shares how a health crisis with a loved one ignited her passion for research, specifically in the health arena.  How that crisis impacted Rebecca is evident in how she lives today, 10 years later.  Rebecca tells us how experiences from her childhood produced a feeling of needing to achieve.  She found that she would set goals but when she achieved them, she was left feeling empty. She wanted to know the why behind the emptiness and wanted to find the answer to happiness.  After much work, Rebecca discovered how she truly desired to feel.  Rebecca and Julie talk about the importance of self care.  Rebecca shares how in the past, she felt that she had to “earn” the right to self care.  Now, she understands the importance of self care being a daily part of life and how it allows her to remain in “be state”. Rebecca shares how finding her “be state” changed her life and describes how to find your own “be state”.  She says to write down a list of qualities you would love to experience or be.  When you look at your list, circle your top 5.  Don’t overthink it, just go with your gut.  After you choose your five, create an affirmation….”I am abundant, I am relaxed, and I am joyful”.  You are creating a “to be” list instead of your “to do” list. Rebecca’s book “Becoming You” is available now on Amazon.  She says it's a guide and not just a book but details how to unpack the info and apply it to your life.  You can find Rebecca at: www.rebeccacafiero.com  www.brandcampretreat.com  Follow on IG: @rebeccacafiero Connect with us→ via social media

Tips for Launching a Successful Podcast with Launch Specialist Jodey Smith

Jodey Smith is the podcast launch specialist for Pro Podcast Solutions. This podcast is devoted to two things. Telling the stories of other podcasters and helping people who are new to podcasting or in the prelaunch phase. Jodey is a podcaster and a launch specialist, so he is the perfect guest for this end of the year show. We are taking the holidays off and will be back at the beginning of January.  Jodey is a former corporate cubicle employee. He started listening to podcasts at his desk, back in 2007, and he started his very own podcast in 2013. At one time, he even got paid to podcast about a TV show. Isn't that every kid's dream? He started answering podcaster’s questions in a Facebook group which eventually led to him being paid for podcast consulting advice. Since that time, he's launched over a hundred podcasts.  As our launch specialist at Pro Podcast Solutions, Jody is responsible for helping our customers get their podcast launched. He asks them about their goals and expectations. Then takes them through a four to six week launch cycle where he answers questions and guides them through weekly calls. He works through technical issues like sound and equipment setup. He helps them find their ideal listener. He also handles technical issues like getting feeds setup and website implementation.  Today, Jodey shares the common challenges and missteps that new podcasters are up against. He talks about the importance of sound quality and shares the best microphones for great sound at any price level. He talks about what actually moves the needle when it comes to ranking in Apple Podcasts. We discuss the benefits of podcasting, and Jodey shares some podcasts that are doing it right. We explore unique creativity, artwork, titles, and everything to get a podcast off the ground.  Show Notes: [05:21] Jodey loves guiding people through the podcast launch process. The first thing that happens is a call where Jodey finds out what success looks like to the podcaster. He wants to get an idea of their expectations and their goals. [05:59] Success looks different to different people. One person may want one hundred new listeners and another one might just want a couple of new clients. While someone else may want 10,000 subscribers and paying sponsors.  [07:59] There are certain questions and flashes of ideas that you won't even consider until you get into the process of podcasting. [08:29] Ideally we set up a podcast launch over a four to six week period. Each week Jodey gets on a Skype or Zoom call with the client and talks through any questions they may have and focuses on getting things in order.  [09:06] The focus can be on things like getting comfortable with the equipment or finding the right target audience. Jodey also sets up the feed and integrates the podcast with the website. They even do practice episodes. By the end of the launch everything is up and ready to go. [10:32] Apple podcasts is still the top directory. Spotify has grown to around 9% to 11%.  [11:44] You want to be on Apple podcasts and Spotify, and you want your feed to be indexed by Google podcasts. You also want to make a link for Android devices and Stitcher. [12:05] Most small directories poll from Apple or iTunes, so if you submitted to that directory you'll be in the others. [12:52] Google is treating podcast feeds the way they treat websites. You want to make sure that your podcast feed is set up correctly, so Google will call it. [13:27] You can also put some header code in your website. It usually takes four to six weeks for Google to index a podcast feed. [15:08] When you have a launch date, the best thing to do is submit your feeds well ahead of time. You can use a placeholder show. [17:25] New & Noteworthy has been around for awhile. Jodey advises clients not to worry about it on this point.  [19:52] You should get the best microphone that you can afford. This makes the difference between a good and great sounding podcast. [21:04] There are currently 800,000 podcast in iTunes. If you dive a little deeper and compare it to the number of blogs that exist, podcasting isn't saturated. Plus, only 41% of those are active. [22:33] People should think about podcasting as a long-term endeavor and focus on great content and consistency. [23:36] One common issue that podcasters have is the audio quality of their guests. It's always a wild card. You can try to help mitigate these issues by sending your guest some instructions to follow. [29:56] Jodey recommends dynamic microphones. It'll make podcasts sound better. Condenser microphones pick up more ambient noise, so they need to be used in more of a sound booth atmosphere. [31:35] If you've already purchased a Yeti microphone, you can get the best sound out of it by having the microphone close to your mouth. You will need a foam windscreen or pop filter to have the microphone about 6 inches from your mouth. Then turn the gain way down. [33:59] Jodey loves meeting so many creative people. We even have a couple of creative clients who decided to sell a premium holiday episode for $3.99, they had 177 purchases the first week. By trying something new, they made an extra $600 in a week.  [35:44] They just used PayPal and a downloadable mp3.  [37:33] Give your audience something and build your list. Don't ask for ratings and reviews. Amy Porterfield is a master of this. You can build deeper relationships by communicating through email.  [39:50] Subscribers are the biggest factor in iTunes ranking. [41:12] Titles are important. You can have a creative or bottom line title. This is something that tells your ideal listener that this podcast is for me. A good example is Dental Implant Practices by Dr. Phillip Gordon.  [42:45] The danger of being creative is you may not attract your ideal listener. If you don't have a following, you might want to go with the bottom line title. [44:03] You want your artwork to let your ideal listener know if the podcast is for them. You don't have to have a microphone in your artwork or include podcast in your title. [49:07] Serve the audience you have. You don't have to have a huge audience, just serve the people your podcast is meant to serve. [52:32] Darrell's takeaways: It's not a sprint, it's a marathon. What if your 300 listeners were in your living room showing up to hear what you have to say? That puts a different perspective on subscriber numbers. Serve your audience no matter how big or small. Make sure you use a good microphone. It doesn't have to be expensive, just good. (1:19:00) Dr. Erica Middlemiss Dr. Joe Dispenza The M21 Wellness Guide Positive Head Podcast #271: Cory Allen Power Quotes From The Show Observing Thoughts & Emotions In A Healthy Manner "Understand that there will be peaks and valleys throughout your lifetime; you just can't have one without the other. When you know that you're in a valley, then you can navigate it in a way that's the most effective as opposed to getting lost in the darkness. Give your thoughts and emotions their space, observe them, allow them to pass by, and do whatever you can to just gently find your way out of it but never by forcing, masking, or holding them down." - Brandon Beachum The Positive Side Of Relationships Ending "All relationships have the purpose of growth and the idea that one has to last forever in order to be successful is a big misconception that permeates our collective consciousness. You are going to come together with different energies for all of eternity and thank goodness there is some shelf-life to all of them. Whether you spend a whole lifetime together or 5 weeks or 5 days, that separation gives us the opportunity to miss the relationship and have gratitude for it. You never truly lose anyone or anything. Honor that relationship, know that you are infinitely abundant and the universe will send whatever else you need." - Brandon Beachum Experiencing Life Fully Through Love, Wonder, And Pain "God is using all of these 'painful experiences' for love in the end. Wholeheartedly, we will or already have experienced every type of love, wonder, or pain in our lifetimes. That's the game, I believe, that our soul signed up for; it signed up to go down the deep rabbit hole of contrast so that it could fully appreciate who and what we are in this life. Understanding that helps us realize that it's all going to be okay in the end. We are not victims because everything that we experience is not happening to us but for us. Life is not happening to you, it is always, always, and always happening for you."- Brandon Beachum Links From Today's Show LIFEAID CBD 303 Aaron Hinde The Celestine Prophecy: An Adventure by James Redfield Buckminster Fuller 096 Daniel Schmachtenberger Alan Watts 032 Gay and Katie Hendricks  Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Afterlife by Dr. Eben Alexander III Whatever Arises, Love That: A Love Revolution That Begins with You by Matt Kahn Michael Beckwith Life is NOT a Journey - Alan Watts Interstellar trailer Inside Out trailer Dr. Erica Middlemiss Dr. Joe Dispenza The M21 Wellness Guide Positive Head Podcast #271: Cory Allen Mystic Manor Optimystic Instagram Positive Head podcast Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube Brandon Beachum Facebook Twitter Instagram LinkedIn About Brandon Beachum Brandon Beachum is a podcaster, entrepreneur, writer, musician, philosopher, and truth-seeker. He originally made his way to California from the east coast when his former band received a development deal with Elektra Records back in 2001. Brandon has been a serial entrepreneur since childhood and in 2010, while living on a friend’s couch, he founded what is now his first recognizably successful company, ResortShare. In August of 2015, ResortShare was named the 569th fastest-growing private company in America in the annual Inc. 5000 Fastest Growing Companies list. In October 2015 ResortShare received an offer to be bought out for $30 million dollars by a publicly-traded company, but within 12 hours of receiving the offer, they lost 90% of their revenue stream due to an exclusive arrangement a major partner (Booking.com) signed with a much larger competitor. Brandon learned some great life lessons through this hardship and throughout his experience at ResortShare and is now focusing on various other projects. (Positive Head, HelloVacay.com, Sesh.io) The Ultimate Nature Of Reality Since discussing and continually exploring what he refers to as “The Ultimate Nature of Reality” is something he feels called very strongly to do, he decided that launching a podcast would be the best avenue to pursue his calling and to help bring that increasingly popular topic of conversation to a broader audience. So in May 2015, he launched PositiveHead.com and The Positive Head Podcast. The show’s aim is to help listeners consistently maintain elevated vibration. In an effort to help the listeners achieve that aim, every Wednesday he interviews a different author, director, artist, blogger, scientist, entrepreneur or other notable personality who is out there making a positive impact on the world. He has been extremely fortunate to have the privilege to interview some amazing and highly-respected guests in the very first year of his show (i.e. Dr. Eben Alexander, Marian Goodell, Dr. Bruce Lipton, Nassim Haramein). Brandon's Dedication To Better Wellness On the other weekdays, Brandon and his co-host Dalien give interpretations of their favorite quotes, share a bit of mind-expanding or mysterious news, take questions from the audience, and dig into any other mind-expansive topics that they feel will help keep the listeners’ souls fed on a regular basis. The Positive Head Podcast has continued to experience exponential growth and was featured in the “New & Noteworthy” section on iTunes within weeks of being launched, and is currently listed in the “What’s Hot” section on iTunes in multiple categories. Brandon is also currently in the process of writing his first two books, The Fountain of You: How the marriage of science and spirituality is birthing us into the age of timelessness and The Talk: A wakeup call for those ready to re-member. 8 Keys to Build Your Podcast Brand – Episode 187 Building your podcast brand is a big step toward audience growth. If you want to keep listeners coming back time and again, you need to build top-of-mind awareness. Your listeners need to think of you first when they think of your niche. To build your memorable podcast brand, follow these 8 steps.   1. BENEFITS, NOT CONTENTS It's the Snap, Crackle, Pop … Not the Puffed Rice Rice. Sugar. Salt. Malt flavor. Mmmmm. I can't wait to get a bowl of that! Your listeners aren't attracted by the contents of your show. They don't care if your show discusses money or business or politics or sports. All your listener cares about is the benefits they will receive from your show. Here are a few podcast descriptions I found on iTunes. "Those people that make videos on YouTube now have their own audio podcast. Hope you will stay awhile." "(unnamed podcast) produces original stories each week for families around the world. Each week on the (unnamed podcast), we'll be sharing a free story from one of our original story series." "The world's favorite podcast about old video games reaches its next stage! Join (hosts) and a variety of guests as they discuss the favorite games and topics of yesteryear." I'm sure these are solid podcasts. They were all listed in the "New & Noteworthy". The content may be great, but the descriptions lack any snap, crackle or pop. People get attracted to your show by the benefits, not ingredients. Consumers buy the fun of the Snap, Crackle & Pop. They aren't buying the puffed rice. Listeners are seeking the fun of learning life's lessons through stories, not original stories for families. The audience wants nostalgic memories of teenage afternoons wasted in the arcade in front of Donkey Kong, Ms. Pac Man and Dragon's Lair, not discussion of your favorite games and topics. When a listener decides to listen to your podcast, they ask, "What will this podcast do for me?" If the answer is topics and discussions, your listener is probably moving on. If it is nostalgic memories and comedic bits of "name that video game theme", you might just entice him to check out your show. There is a reason the fun of the experience is on the front of the box and the ingredients are relegated to the side. You need to sell the fun.   2. BE WELL PREPARED, NOT SCRIPTED You must know where you're going before you can actually get there. That statement is true with a road trip and it is also true with your podcast. When you set out to record a show, you must have goals in mind. Once you've determined what you hope to accomplish, you can then decide how you will make it happen. So many podcasters seem to record their show less than fully prepared. I hear hosts often search for details that should be right at their fingertips. There is no reason to lack the proper information while you are doing your show. If you've fully prepared for your podcast, the information should be right in front of you.   3. BE CREATIVE Create "theater of the mind." The use of active language will stir the imagination of your listener and help you connect to your audience. Put the listener in the moment. Make the listener see the action you are describing. "I'm walking in the bustling restaurant and shaking off the cold without even watching where I'm walking." That is active language. In your mind, you can see me walking in. Sure, your restaurant may be different from my restaurant. That difference is what makes theater of the mind great. You see it the way you think it fits best for you. Your scene doesn't need to match my scene in order for the story to make sense. It is your theater. Active language connects each listener to the story in his or her own way. It will create strong audience engagement. Active language during storytelling is a powerful tool you can use while you're building your podcast. Create a great podcast brand. Create theater of the mind.   4. MAKE THEM FORGET There is a primary reason most people seek entertainment. They want to escape reality. Help your listener make their escape by making them forget they are listening to a recording. People want to forget about their troubles of the day. To get away, they watch movies, go to concerts, watch television, listen to radio and spend time with your podcast. People get wrapped up in another time, place and story. This makes them forget about their reality, even if it is only for a short time. Take them to another place with your podcast by using stories. Make your storytelling so strong that their imaginations put your listener in another time and place. That's what great storytelling is all about. That's what great relationships are all about. It is engagement. So, how do you make them forget? How do you engage and entertain to the point where your listener is so engrossed with your content that they forget about everything else? What are the steps to create a great story? The intriguing introduction. The vivid details. The powerful conclusion. Then, ask "what else?" Take a few tips from movies and television. Tell compelling stories just like the movies. [ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF POWERFUL STORYTELLING – EPISODE 129]   5. FEAR IS THE ENEMY OF CREATIVITY Think about a speech you have given. When you have only rehearsed the speech a couple times, anxiety sets in. Thinking about making a mistake makes you nervous. Your lack of preparation is the cause. You worry that you may forget something. You are not prepared. On the other hand, when you have rehearsed the speech many, many times, you eventually know it by heart. You begin to feel much more confident. The worry isn't present. You begin to relax. When you relax, the spontaneity kicks in. Spontaneity in your speech happens most when you aren't worried about the mechanics of the presentation. Your mind is allowed to move naturally through the material. This relaxation helps you become truly engaged with the audience and material. Wonderful, creative, spontaneous things happen when you reach this point. The same can be said for your podcast. When you know the material, have defined a specific goal for the show, and have mapped out a plan to achieve that goal, your podcast will be filled with many "oh wow" moments. When you worry about your content, you have no brain power left for spontaneous things to happen. Where are you spending your time? Are you too busy thinking about the next question and blocking out the spontaneity? Is rehearsal really the enemy of spontaneity?   6. BE INTERESTING BY BEING INTERESTED Listen to your guest. You become interesting by being interested. Podcasters often ask how long their podcast needs to be. Your podcast needs to be as long as it needs to be. As long as it is interesting, it isn't too long. You need to do your homework prior to the interview. You need to know what makes your guest interesting. What will make your guest engaging to your audience? Find that story, and help your guest bring it to life. You become interesting by being interested. Listen to the answers your guest provides. Then, ask great, intriguing, follow-up questions.   7. TELL STORIES, DON'T READ Walt Disney was one of the greatest storytellers of our time. When you examine his work, you realize he wasn't a great story writer. He was a fantastic story teller. Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, Bambi, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Jungle Book. All are stories written by someone else. Disney just turned them into great stories that sometimes didn't follow the original exactly. Snow White – "Snow White" is a German fairy tale known across much of Europe and is today one of the most famous fairy tales worldwide. The Brothers Grimm published it in 1812 in the first edition of their collection Grimm's Fairy Tales. Pinocchio - The Adventures of Pinocchio is a novel for children by Italian author Carlo Collodi, written in Florence. The first half was originally a serial in 1881 and 1882, and then later completed as a book for children in February 1883. Fantasia – The movie was developed around the Sorcerer's Apprentice, a German poem written in 1797 by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Bambi - Bambi, a Life in the Woods, was originally published in Austria in 1923 and written by Felix Salten. Cinderella – This movie started as a European folk tale. The first written European version of the story was published in Naples, by Giambattista Basile, in 1634. Peter Pan - Peter Pan is a character created by Scottish novelist and playwright J. M. Barrie in 1902. Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up, premiered on 27 December 1904 in London. Jungle Book - The Jungle Book (1894) is a collection of stories by English author Rudyard Kipling. The stories were first published in magazines in 1893–94. Even recent, successful movies created by the Disney company after Walt Disney's death were based on stories written by others. Hercules – Greek myth Mulan – Chinese legend Tarzan – 1914 book by Edgar Rice Burroughs Tangled – Base on Rapunzel published in 1812 Brothers Grimm   Model the Disney filter. Walt Disney's upbringing shaped his view on life and influenced how he told stories. According to the book "Walt Disney – Hollywood's Dark Prince" by Marc Eliot, Disney's life on his boyhood Missouri farm was harsh. Walt was unsure of his father, because he had no birth certificate. He grew up in a very strict household where his father often used corporal punishment. Walt's mother usually did very little to tame the strick hand of the senior Disney. Growing up on the farm, Walt and his brother Roy were required to do chores to earn their keep. They would attend school during the day while working on the farm at night. There was no time for friends. Walt's friends were the various animals around the farm. The life Disney experienced on the farm influenced his films. If you study the films created by Disney while he was alive, you see the evidence. Most of Disney's feature-length films contain a protagonist with no father figure. The main character is typically a lonely outcast who has made friends with various animals. Think of your favorite Disney character. Does that individual fit that description? Cinderella. Snow White. Mowgli in the Jungle Book. Peter Pan. It is all right there. Disney didn't write great stories. He told great stories as seen through his filter. Plan your story using your own filter. Many podcasters believe that planning all of their content removes the opportunity for things to happen. Does planning remove the fun from your show? Not at all. When you spend less time trying to think of the next piece of content, you can spend more time thinking about how to make the next piece of content amazing. Organizing your content is the key to allowing your content to become entertainment.   8. THE CLOCK The one tool most radio hosts use to organize their show is a show clock. This is basically a schedule of what is to happen on the show and when those pieces of content occur. The show clock becomes even more important when you have a co-host. The clock puts all members of the show on the same page. Each host knows exactly what is coming up and when it is supposed to happen. You can download the PTC Show Clock template in the worksheet library online at PodcastTalentCoach.com.   Do you need help with your podcast? E-mail me any time at Coach@PodcastTalentCoach.com. Its a beautiful Wednesday Morning and today is a very special day because today marks exactly ONE MONTH since I officially officially launched the Andrew Deitsch Podcast! If I've said it once I've said it a hundred times, you guys have officially blown me away. Later today I am uploading episode 21, so as of today I will have uploaded 21 full length episodes, four weekly updates, one bonus episode, and an introduction episode for a grand total of 27 pieces of audio content.  I just added it all up and it was about 47 HOURS OF CONTENT. I can't even believe we did it. I kind of can believe it because I have put so much work into this project, but when you put down the actual number 47 hours it seems like a lot. So if you have taken the time to listen to all of them, you literally have listened to my podcast for almost 2 whole days of your life. That's bonkers. I honestly don't think there is anyone out there who has listened to every single one all the way through, but if you have, and you're out there, I want to say thanks for the love! Also over the course of this month, my analytics are showing that I have had over 2,700 unique listeners, and I am averaging about 700 unique people accessing my podcast feed. If you add it all up since I launched, per day I have had over 17,000 downloads. That means that on average if there are 2,700 listeners, each person has downloaded an average of about 6 episodes. The fact that almost 3 thousand people cared enough to check this out is insane. I also have to thank all of the amazing guests that I have had so far: Adam, Ashlyn, Davis, Tyler, Trey, Parker, Dre, Elizabeth, Graham, Owen, Jamie, Matthew, Conner, Remi, Austin, CC, Morgan, Luke, Cameron, Lyndsay, Will, and Alex you guys are the best and I want to thank you guys for believing in me and being such good friends. Without you guys and your friends listening, I would have no show. Especially those of you who recorded before even one episode was released and trusted me enough to put something good out. Y'all are the real MVP's. Okay, enough with the cheesy award acceptance speech. We have a long way to go before we get featured in the iTunes store and we really really really need to get in there. That will really be the main factor if this thing takes off. I've got 4 more weeks to get in the New & Noteworthy section, so if each of you listening can go rate the podcast in the iTunes store, that would help my ratings go through the ROOF! It takes like two minutes. Every single review counts and I read them all so if you want to give me some feedback that is a great place to do that. Episode 21 is with the hilarious Comedian, Will Foskey (@WTFoskey). Will has been doing stand up for a few years now and he has directly worked with a ton of really talented people including: DC Young Fly (@dcyoungfly)who is on MTV's Wild'n Out, Emmanuel and Philip Hudson (@emanhudson & @lantbo) and many more. Combined, those three guys have 7 million followers on Instagram so obviously Will is doing something right. Will and I have a few mutual friends and he reached out to me to be on the podcast. At first, I was a little bit hesitant to do the podcast since I had never met this guy before, but I thought, okay I'll give this guy a chance. If he's funny I'll have him on. So I found a clip on Youtube from one of his stand up comedy shows to see if he sucked. He obviously did NOT suck, and I was cracking up the whole time. I messaged him back and told him I was totally down. On this episode Will and I talked about his upbringing and how it shaped him into being a comic, his intro into the world of comedy and the racial segregation that still exists in the comedy world, some stories of him totally bombing onstage, and his stories of hanging out with THE T.I. Needless to say, this was one of the funniest podcasts I have done so far, and it was super fun getting to know Will. That episode will be released today so be on the lookout. Episode 22 is with my good friend, Alex Guthrie (@theAlexGuthrie). Alex is an amazingly talented musician and photographer. You may recognize him from the nationally aired ad campaign he recently did with Jennifer Hudson for American Family Insurance. I keep seeing him everywhere on billboards, hearing his commercial on the radio, and on TV, its so crazy that he is everywhere! Every time I see it I freak out and I can't believe I'm friends with this guy! I met Alex about 5 years ago through some mutual friends around the time when he was first auditioning for American Idol. He basically dropped out of college to go compete in the third round before getting turned down by one judge who convinced another judge to give him a "No" as well. Needless to say, Alex didn't stop, and the future is super bright. His album, Lessons Learned is available on iTunes, Spotify and wherever else you listen to music, and he has new music coming very soon. In this episode we talked about how he got into music, his experience with American Idol, dealing with depression, going on tour, how he got the commercial with Jennifer Hudson and the story of how it was a complete surprise, getting together his band and how they record, and much more. This was one of my favorite episodes so far, and don't forget to go listen to Alex's music. You won't regret it. I am going to be releasing that episode tomorrow so keep it locked right here. Episode 23 I am actually recording later tonight with Actress, Heidi Uzelac (@HeidiUzelac). This podcast is delayed, but I wanted to include it in this weekly update since I will be releasing it soon. Since we haven't done the podcast yet I can't guarantee what we will be talking about, but I assume we will talk about how she got into acting and what its like dealing with Hollywood and that world, her daily routine and how she stays focused, meditation, her favorite books, and whatever else we end up talking about. I am super excited for tonight and I will post that episode soon. If you would like to support the podcast, please rate 5 stars and review on iTunes. Music by Calvin Kraakevik

Hey everyone! Hope you are all having a great week! I am recording this in Washington, DC! I am flying back to ATL tonight but in the meantime, here is my weekly update! In this episode I'm going to rant a little bit on some of my thoughts, share some of my other favorite podcasts that I have been listening to, and answer some questions that I've been getting, and give you a preview of this weeks episodes. I have been reaching out to other podcasters and getting connected with some other people in this space, and tons of people have been commenting on my audio quality! I didn't really think it was that big of a deal until I started listening to some other podcasts that were just getting started, and I'm not trying to be mean, but most of them just aren't up to my standards. It doesn't really take much to have professional sounding audio. My entire setup excluding my computer and the editing software I use was only about $260. There is a bell curve to how much the equipment costs versus how much better your audio will sound. For example my Lavalier Microphones that cost 40 dollars each are going to sound a lot better than the microphone that comes on your phone. BUT you could still get really good, crisp audio on your phone microphone, too. Most people just aren't recording in the right environment. The environment you are recording in can take your recording from a 3 to a 7. If you are recording in an super echo-ey environment or there is a bunch of noise in the background like the A/C running really high or a refrigerator running in the background it can be really challenging to get listenable audio quality. If people only had to listen to it for a few minutes it would be fine, but these people are listening for hours at a time. They don't want to hear a constant humming in the background. I try my best to record in environments that don't have those negative qualities to make the post-production as easy as possible. I do all of my editing myself, so the less time I have to spend fixing the audio the better. I also want to get into the New & Noteworthy section in the iTunes Store and Podcast app and I know that in order for Apple to feature my podcast it's going to have to be up to their standards as well. Speaking of featuring podcasts, I wanted to take the time to share two podcasts that I have listened to this week that I think you guys would really enjoy as well if you enjoy my content here. The first podcast that I highly recommend is The Joe Rogan Experience: Episode #974 with Megan Phelps-Roper. Megan used to be a prominent member of the radical religious cult, the Westboro Baptist Church. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Westboro Baptist Church, they are especially known for their hate speech towards the LGBT community, Catholics, Muslims, Jews, and basically everyone else on earth. Their church website is godhatesfags.com, and they also have made statements such as, "thank God for dead soldiers," "God blew up the troops," "thank God for 9/11," and "God hates America." They picket soldiers funerals, religious gatherings, gay pride rallies and more. Megan left the church a few years ago and in this amazingly powerful interview she gives a surprising inside look on what goes on inside the church, how talking with people on Twitter helped her realize the errors in the church doctrine, and why she no longer is affiliated with them, and how she escaped the church. It was one of my favorite podcasts I have listened to in a while and you shouldn't miss out. The other podcast I would recommend this week is Control-Walt-Delete with legendary tech reporter Walt Mossberg and Nilay Patel. The episode is called Walt and Nilay Sign off. This was the final episode of Control Walt Delete, so if you like this podcast it is unfortunately all over because Walt is retiring, but they have 75 other episodes from the past 2 years that you can go back and listen to. Walt Mossberg was personal friends with Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and tons of other billionaire tech entrepreneurs, so he has some amazing stories about those guys. This final episode was recorded in front of a live audience in New York City, with a Live Q&A as well. If you are a tech-nerd like me, you will really enjoy that podcast. Okay so now I am going to take the time to answer a few questions that I have been getting. Some people, mainly my parents and their friends that want to listen to my podcast, are commenting on my use of "iinappropriate" language, and I thought I would address that. I have a very reasonable explanation for why I choose to swear on this podcast that I think is pretty logical. Number 1: I don't want to filter myself. In any way. I want to be as transparent and open as possible. I have no interest in censoring myself. Transparency is a huge driving factor behind this podcast and I think that being as open with my audience allows for vulnerability, and that is the only way to build trust.  Number 2: I don't want to filter my guests. I want my guests to feel as comfortable as possible. I don't want them to change or filter their responses just because lots of people are listening. I also think it would be silly for me to censor myself, but then allow my guests to curse. By allowing myself the freedom to curse, it lets my guests know that they can be free to express themself however they want to as well. Of course their will be some guests who I know don't swear out of personal convictions or whatever, so you will probably not find me swearing on those episodes. Number 3: I think that I owe my listeners my real thoughts and feelings. Some people have commented that they think my cussing seems kind of forced, especially in the first episodes. I think that is because in the back of my mind there is a slight hesitation before I do it. Since this is being put out there for everyone to hear, there's a voice in my head telling me to not say it, but like I said, I have made the decision to not filter myself, so I say it anyways. Pretending that I don't swear in real life is just preposterous and putting on a filter to separate myself from the virgin ears of the listeners seems disengenuous. Over the course of this podcast I think it will become more natural.  Number 4: Times are changing. The line between professional and unprofessional is blurring every day. We can't stop pretending to live these double lives. I don't want to have this weird voice that I only use when I know someone is listening. Its fake and gross, and everyone can tell its weird. Throwing in a curse word lets people know that you don't take things too seriously and that you are comfortable. The more we police language the more power you give to the word. The more we use these taboo words, the quicker they will lose their power. If they are such "bad words" don't we want them to lose their power? I think so. I think that having curse words in are an automatic filter for those who are not open minded enough to look past them. If it truly offends you, then maybe you shouldn't be listening to my podcast. If you are still listening at this point then I think you will be fine. The next question is something that I have been wrestling with. I was recently contacted by an Olympic Gold Medalist and motivational speaker and I really want to have her on the podcast. The only problem is she lives in New York. Eventually I want to be able to use this podcast as a way to travel and see the world. I would love to be able to fly up there and do a podcast but right now with my work schedule its just not a reality. So the question is: Am I going to do virtual podcasts where I am not in the same physical space as my guests? I am torn because I really want to have her and others on the podcast, but I hate virtual interviews. They are not as intimate and there is a weird disconnect you get when you are not in the same room. The other problem is the audio quality. Like I mentioned earlier I really want to make sure my audio quality is up to my standards and typically Skype interviews sound like they were recorded with a toaster oven. The audio is delayed and its just a big pet peeve of mine. On the other hand, I could totally do the interview, deliver the content to you guys, and just do my best to clean it up and get over myself. I am looking into some software that is designed specifically for this type of scenario but I am still wary of the quality. Let me know what you guys think. Should I start doing virtual conversations or stick with face to face and not settle for sub par quality? This week I have Three new episodes for your ear holes. Episode 18 is with my friend Luke Crawford. Luke is an Entrepreneur, Photographer, Competitive Shooter, Hunter, Fighter, Political Activist, fellow Eagle Scout and much more. I have been friends with Luke for over 15 years or so, and we had a lot to talk about. Luke has always had a way of standing out from the crowd, and not just because he is taller than everyone. Since high school he has been on the news, on the radio, and he has gained a sizable following on Instagram and Facebook. In this episode, Luke shares some amazing stories of how he got into the world of Firearms, the famous story of how he got on the news for his unique business idea, his huge recent win with Students for Concealed Carry, how he outsmarted Donald Trump's campaign and beat them to the punch on a great business idea, and his activism with fighting Human Trafficking and the Sex industry in Atlanta. I have wanted to have Luke on my podcast since I started, and I really enjoyed catching up with him and I'm sure this will be a classic episode. I can't wait to have him on again. Episode 19 is with Celebrity Stylist and Fashion expert, Cameron Hesseltine. Cameron has styled a bunch of celebrities including: Jon Hamm, Kate Beckinsale, Chrissy Teigen, and Sarah Hyland. In this episode Cameron shares her story of her upbringing and why she dropped out of college, her crazy stories of styling celebrities in LA and why its not as glamorous as it seems, and we talk men's fashion, the taboos surrounding it, and some do's and don'ts for the guys out there. I have been getting into men's fashion more and more over the past year and it was really fun to talk about all that stuff surrounding men's fashion with her. Cameron is also going to be starting her own podcast soon, so stay tuned for that. I can't wait to be a guest on her show and I will let all of you guys know when she officially launches it. Episode 20 is with my friend, Lyndsay Carreno. Lyndsay is a world traveler, political activist, historian, and one of my best friends, and she actually lives here in Washington, DC. I have been waiting to release this week's update because I knew we were doing this podcast, and I wanted to at least release three episodes this week. Lyndsay moved here six months ago, and didn't know a soul. Just straight hustled from the ground up. It has been her dream to move out here, and I am super proud of her of conquering her fears and just going for it. On this episode, Lyndsay shares her stories from her childhood and growing up in England, the stories of the impact her dad has made on her life and his tragic death last year, and at the end we delved into some good ol' american politics. I was super excited to come visit her and record this episode and I want to thank Lyndsay for being so vulnerable and sharing her stories with us. You definitely don't want to miss this one. Those three episodes will be coming very soon, so stay tuned. That's all I have time for today! I am actually flying back to Atlanta today, so I am going to be recording a lot more episodes when I get back.   If you would like to support the podcast, please rate 5 stars and review on iTunes. Making music is in Justin's genes. His father, Ernest “Oldie” Garner, performed as a percussionist with the soul/funk band The Rockin' Imperials. Ernest passed when Justin was only two years old, but he left to his son the gift of music and determination to continue his legacy. Justin has been a tribute to that legacy ever since, especially when he returned to his hometown to perform a special concert in the old rehearsal space of his late father's band. “My dad passed when I was two, and all that I was left with were photos and old recordings of his band. This concert served as a chance for me to connect with him musically, by standing where he stood, and performing music where he once performed.” Holding a Bachelor's in marketing, Justin has been able to work the ins and outs of the music industry. His knowledge of business coupled with his musical ability has landed him many mainstream opportunities, including highly coveted chart positions on iTunes and other storefronts. He has performed around the United States as a supporting act for recording artists Trey Songz, Big Sean, Fantasia, Keri Hilson and many more. Other huge accomplishments for Justin have certainly come from his marketing skills, as he has been able to expertly place his voice in all the right places. From YouTube, he received millions of views for his series of covers and remixes to songs by Beyoncé, Katy Perry and other top artists. The success of his cover videos led him to creating original music, leading to a bevy of musical achievements. In 2012, Justin was listed as Amazon.com's Artist on the Rise and as New & Notable - triumphs typically reserved for artists signed to major labels. Through the social media network MySpace, Justin was a featured new artist, catching the attention of music enthusiasts and industry heavyweights. In 2013, he was listed as New & Noteworthy and Artist to Watch on iTunes.  Justin has two full-length albums, I Am (2014) and Year One (2013). His next project 7, a seven-track EP, will be released in the spring. “I wanted to record seven songs in seven days. I locked myself in the studio and just wrote about everything that came to my mind. Instead of focusing on industry sounds, I went in a more organic direction and incorporated live elements. Lyrically and vocally, I wanted this body of work to be more passionate, heartfelt, and soulful.”  With no intention of slowing down, Justin intensely records and performs with only one priority – his fans. Justin's evolution as an artist, songwriter and vocal arranger is remarkable. His drive and ambition for creating music is unrelenting.

I've been reflecting a lot over the past couple weeks as I close the books down for 2015, I've had a great year, and am ready to welcome in another one. Many thanks to all of you for listening, subscribing and sharing this podcast! biggest 2015 mistakes no boundaries established - not honoring days off or time off, etc. limit your launches - map them out way in advance not hiring soon enough not doing my due diligence with hiring - website, VA not doing enough research prior to launching an event - presell I'm sharing some free exercises to help you understand some of your biggest lessons {failures} - this is the reflection guide I use to create more success in my life. Go to adriennedorison.com/bigmistakes to download this free reflection guide. Started a business on the side of my day job, organically evolved from a personal development & leadership blog I started in late 2014. Offered my services for FREE to get some humans some real results and build my own confidence that I could start charging for this! Worked during mornings lunch breaks, evenings, and weekends to grow my side business alongside my corporate job. Took lots of action - without overthinking things first. Read The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod and completely switched my schedule around to make more time to grow my business in the evenings after my corporate day job. Read 6 Months to 6 Figures by Peter Voogd and learned to really master my skills before moving on - then later he became more of a personal mentor. Focused on Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University program and paid off all my debt in just 6 months - over $45,000. Invested in an empowerment coach and transformed ME before I transformed a business w/ Lisa Carpenter Dove deep into podcasts and learned from the best while I was on the road during my day job commute; Internet Business Mastery with friend, Jason Van Orden, Tiffany Han's Raise Your Hand Say Yes, Chalene Johnson's Build Your Tribe, Amy Porterfield's Online Marketing Made Easy, Pat Flynn's Smart Passive Income… Built my own website on SquareSpace and it was pretty darn good for a DIY.  Had my website re-designed by someone and paid tons of money for it — but basically I had an artist build a bridge and it was a website nightmare that had to be redone. Had it redesigned again – by someone far more qualified to build a website that does what a website is supposed to do…and it's pretty too. Created a FB group – grew it organically and it has continued to grow to a group full of supportive, high-achieving humans looking to become more masterful. Had my first professional photoshoot done and even brought my dog, Church E. Bear  Launched a course before I was ready and had 5 people join.  Launched another course before I was ready and had 15 people join.  Raised my prices 3 different times because I had a waitlist. Revamped my packages 3 different times because it takes awhile to figure out what's going to get your clients the best results. Worked with incredible clients – saw them getting incredible results, getting published, quitting their jobs, getting their own clients, creating their first products, doubling their income, increasing their prices, starting waitlists, growing their audience, etc. Quit my corporate job. Took two courses that rocked my world - BTBY with Kimra Luna, and Sales School with Kendrick Shope. Reached out to mentors and influencers to learn from the best. Started my own podcast - The School of Self-Mastery. Hit the New & Noteworthy in iTunes and stayed there for over 11 weeks.  Reached the 10% of all podcasts with tons of downloads thanks to you! Connected with and interviewed tons of successful, influential and interesting humans because of the podcast -  condensed 3 years of podcasting into 6 months! Shared my debt freedom story publicly even was I knew it would annoy people. Traveled to Atlanta to meet and be interviewed my personal finance guru, Clark Howard - and had my first national TV debut because of this bold action. Hired Shana Lynn Yao from yourmarketingmastermind.com to up my business game. Hired my next mentor, Farnoosh Torabi, who has been an invaluable investment for me and my business. Started outsourcing some smaller tasks to free up some time. Got even better at outsourcing and hired Erin Kelly as my OBM - best decision ever and she'll eventually be my first full-time team member (fun fact, Erin was a client, and now I'm her client). Made a few business besties just by building real relationships. Planned and launched a live event with a business bestie - and it was the biggest failure turned lesson ever…stay tuned for 2016 plans  Put systems in place and invested in the tools I needed - 17hats, Acuityscheduling, Leadpages, Libsyn, Basecamp Won a year long coaching program for 2016 with sales expert, Kendrick Shope, and plan to get banging results to thank her for the generosity. Got active on periscope, and then stopped when it started to feel stressful. Pitched myself (and got published) in Huffington Post, GROW, Brazen Careerist, and Get Rich Slowly. Created tons of content & free resources - some that were great and some that “flopped” Gave away over 100 hours of free coaching and over $35,000 of content and coaching.  Condensed over 3 years of podcasting into just 6 months and learned tons about myself and interviewing in general. Was featured as a guest on TONS of podcasts (SoMoney, Stacking Benjamins, Screw The Nine to Five, Lifestyle Business Podcast, The 5am Miracle, All Up In Your Lady Business, Success Secrets of Entrepreneurs, Creative Soul Lab, etc…) and even one of the #1 podcasts in all of iTunes - Art of Charm Was consistent EVERY SINGLE DAY for all 365 this year. Seriously, I didn't miss a day.  Focused on building relationships and generosity, not on selling. Took a stand, often a controversial one, on the things that I believed in, which attracted the right people to my work. Launched a membership site Simplified Success Society and then added a $1 trial period. Joined a mastermind full of powerhouse women. Launched an in-person retreat for June 2016 and have almost filled the spots! Took vacations with my fiance, paid cash, and was able to take time off or even work from wherever I was if I wanted to. Made over $11,500 in business mistakes - and then talked about them. Tracked my numbers and didn't avoid my finances. Focused on profit not just revenue and "banked" income versus "booked" income. Showed up even when I didn't really feel like it because I knew once I started, I'd get motivated {I was always right}. Wasn't afraid to take big risks, but always made sure they were calculated ones. Spent tons of time understanding what my audience wanted {and still do} and then gave it to them over and over again.  Invested a lot of time, energy, action and money into my business and reaped the rewards. Powerful Marketing With Podcast Benefits - Episode 065   I was listening to the biography of Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson the other day. It really got me thinking about powerful marketing and how to create it.   The particular section of the book that caught my attention discussed the “1984” apple commercial. The message of the commercial was that apple would save humanity from conformity. It was a nod to George Orwell's novel “Nineteen Eighty-Four”.   The “1984” commercial, when viewed by the Apple Board of Directors, was deemed unacceptable to air. The board suggested the advertising agency sell both the 30-second and 60-second time slots they had purchased during the 1984 during the Super Bowl.   The ad agency sold the :30, but didn't try very hard to unload the :60. Jobs and a few others found the funds to run the commercial one time. The only other time it was aired was once on a few local stations.   With that one airing, the “1984” commercial created millions of dollars in buzz. Network news shows were talking about the commercial. It was the top commercial of the Super Bowl that year. In fact, Advertising Age magazine named the spot one of the Top 50 Greatest Commercials.   The commercial was almost never seen nationally.   What makes marketing like this so powerful? How can we make our podcast message that strong?   You vs. Me   Great marketing is like a mirror. It is a reflection of the customer, not of the company. Great products that use great marketing are focused on the needs, wants and desires of their customers. To turn your podcast into a great brand, focus on your listener and not on yourself.   Scheels had a great commercial for their snowboarding gear. The commercial was completely focused on the lifestyle of the snowboarder. It didn't feature all of the great salespeople or wide aisles in the store or sale prices. The commercial was a mirror reflecting the customer.   To turn your information into engaging entertainment with your podcast, focus on the listener. Use words like “you” instead of “I”, “me” or “we”. Convey your content from the point of view of your listener. They will feel appreciated. They will be engaged. Your podcast will become a relationship. Success will follow. When it is You vs. Me, always pick you.   It's the Snap, Crackle, Pop … Not the Puffed Rice   Rice. Sugar. Salt. Malt flavor. Mmmmm. I can't wait to get a bowl of that!   Your listeners aren't attracted by the contents of your show. They don't care if your show discusses money or business or politics or sports. All your listener cares about is the benefits they will receive from your show.   Here are a few podcast descriptions I found today on iTunes. Consumers by the fun of the Snap, Crackle & Pop. When a listener decides to listen to your podcast, they ask, “What will this podcast do for me?” If the answer is topics and discussions, your listener is probably moving on. If it is nostalgic memories and comedic bits of "name that video game theme", you might just entice him to check out your show.   There is a reason the fun of the experience is on the front of the box and the ingredients are relegated to the side. You need to sell the fun.   This week, look over your podcast description.  What is it telling your listener?  Are you leading with the benefits?  Sell them the results.  Make it exciting.   I'd love to help you with your podcast. Post any questions or comments you might have, or e-mail me at Erik@PodcastTalentCoach.com.   You can find my podcast and other tools to help you create great content at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com.
