“Tortured fear and stupid confidence are the preferred states of mind.” That's a remark from Screwtape, the demon, in C.S. Lewis' book, The Screwtape Letters.He's advising a younger demon on the mindset that they want to create for humanbeings. Either a tortured fear of the future, a sense that we're living in Hell, or a stupid confidence that feels like we're smart enough to create Heaven. The devil is satisfied with either of those approaches because they're both different from what God has for us, to walk in the moment in His presence. It seems to me that this comment from Screwtape Letters is applicable tothe whole subject of artificial intelligence. Because we live in the tension between those who tell us that it is the greatest thing ever, that we are going to revolutionize mankind verses those who say the machines are coming and the Terminator series will no longer be science fiction, it's real. The truth is somewhere in the middle. Before solitary confinement, Richard Allen told investigators he didn't do it. Said it repeatedly under pressure. Said it to his wife. Said it emphatically: "I am not going to say something I did not do." Five months later, his words to his wife had changed: "I think I did it." According to the defense filings, Allen had been held in the most restrictive solitary cell in Westville for thirteen months despite IDOC's thirty-day policy for inmates with his mental health diagnosis. He weighed 135 pounds. He was gravely disabled, psychotic, forcibly injected with antipsychotics. He confessed to shooting the girls — they were killed with a blade. Confessed to acts for which no forensic evidence exists. Made over sixty confessions while prison doctors documented psychosis, paranoia, delusional thinking, and memory loss. His psychologist controlled his privileges. The prosecutor monitored his calls and collected confessions while delaying the defense's emergency transfer motion. A 127-page forensic evaluation found no malingering and attributed the psychosis to the well-documented effects of solitary. By August 2023, Allen couldn't remember weeks of his own life. The jury heard the confessions but never the audio of his psychotic state, never the expert who would have explained them as false. When Andrea Dettore-Murphy first moved to Rankin County, Mississippi, she didn't believe the stories she heard about how brutal the sheriff's department could be when pursuing suspected drug crimes. But in 2018, she learned the hard way that the rumors were true when a group of sheriff's deputies raided the home of her friend Rick Loveday and beat him relentlessly while she watched.  A few years later, Dettore-Murphy says deputies put her through another haunting incident with her friend Robert Grozier. Dettore-Murphy was just the latest in a long line of people who said they witnessed or experienced torture by a small group of deputies, some of whom called themselves the “Goon Squad.” For nearly two decades, the deputies roamed Rankin County at night, beating, tasing, and choking suspects in drug crimes until they admitted to buying or selling illegal substances. Their reign of terror continued unabated until 2023, when the deputies were finally exposed.“Rankin County has always been notorious,” says Garry Curro, one the Goon Squad's many alleged victims. “They don't follow the laws of the land.
