Dr. Gregory Saathoff, a forensic psychiatrist who works with the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit, took the stand today in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, the Duxbury, Massachusetts mother accused of strangling her three children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan — with exercise bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023. Clancy faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation. She's pleaded not guilty, and her attorney, Kevin Reddington, is running an insanity defense built on severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication.Reddington spent cross-examination taking Saathoff's testimony apart piece by piece. Saathoff admitted that on the 911 call, he never actually heard Clancy say she tried to kill herself — just grunts. That detail came from Patrick Clancy's account instead. Same story with the pills: Saathoff said he got the information about Clancy allegedly crushing medication straight from Patrick — nothing was ever tested to confirm it. Reddington then asked the obvious follow-up nobody had an answer for: how did the empty pill bottles end up in a drawer? Saathoff also conceded that a person in psychosis can generate false memories and misremember events entirely — which doesn't exactly help a case built on secondhand recollection. He testified he never reached out to Clancy's mother himself, relying only on the DA's office telling him she wouldn't talk.Prosecutors argue Clancy understood what she was doing despite the mental-health claims. After the killings, she allegedly attempted suicide by jumping from a second-story window and is now paralyzed from the waist down. Husband Patrick Clancy, out running errands at the time, has since relocated to Manhattan. Count your jars and your lids before the tomatoes come in. Today's tomatoes are less acidic than the ones our mothers canned. Added lemon juice is what makes water bath canning safe for them. Water bath handles high-acid foods — fruits, pickles, relishes, jams, acidified tomatoes. Pressure canning is required for meats and vegetables. Canning plain and seasoning later is simpler, safer, and more versatile. The canning process can throw off the flavor of herbs and spices. Follow tested recipes. In 2025, a judge threw out the murder indictment against a man named Michael Colucci after finding that evidence which could have helped him was never properly disclosed. That case is connected to David Owen — the same investigator who ran the Alex Murdaugh murder investigation. Sit with that overlap for a second, because Alex Murdaugh's defense team clearly has. Their new motion demands prosecutors go back through every file SLED touched and certify in writing that nothing favorable to Murdaugh is still sitting in a drawer.On this True Crime Today conversation, Tony Brueski puts the uncomfortable question to retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer: if it happened in the Colucci case, who's checking whether it happened here, besides SLED itself? Coffindaffer spent her career inside federal investigations. She knows what a real evidence audit looks like and what agencies do when one is forced on them. She also knows the difference between a defense attorney who's fishing and one who already knows something is missing.The Owen question is one thread in a week that moved this case twice. A federal judge dismissed Murdaugh's $600,000 lawsuit against Becky Hill, the former clerk whose jury interference forced the retrial, ruling she owes him nothing because he'd have paid his lawyers regardless. Hill's guilty plea covered a book photo, self-paid bonuses, and lying about sealed exhibits. No prison. Nothing for the tampering. Coffindaffer also works through the fired agent whose testimony cleared Eddie Smith, and the white shirt that tested negative for human blood before a lab chemical made it untestable forever.Murdaugh is presumed innocent, and his April retrial will settle what a jury believes. In this episode, I explore how people with health anxiety can unintentionally get pulled into a cycle of reassurance-seeking when using AI to search for medical symptoms. I walk through a real-time demonstration showing how an innocent search for common symptoms can quickly escalate into worst-case scenarios, more uncertainty, and even more anxiety. While AI can be an incredible tool, I explain why it's important to use it carefully if you struggle with health anxiety or illness anxiety OCD.

Dr. Alia Goodheart, a psychiatrist at McLean Hospital, took the stand today in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, the Duxbury, Massachusetts mother accused of strangling her three children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan — with exercise bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023. Clancy faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation. She has pleaded not guilty and is mounting an insanity defense, with attorney Kevin Reddington arguing she was in the grip of severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication at the time of the killings.Under defense cross-examination, Goodheart testified that Clancy's discharge plan amounted to a website and an insurance card — she told Clancy to check Psychology Today and her own coverage to find follow-up care. Goodheart also admitted she never reviewed prior records from the nurse practitioners and other providers who'd already treated Clancy, and she confirmed Clancy told her she was having intrusive thoughts of suicide. No blood work. No screening tools. Not even the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale — the standard test built for exactly this situation. On redirect, prosecutors tried to soften the blow, stressing that discharge instructions did tell Clancy to contact a personal provider. Whether that line survives what came before it is now the jury's problem.Prosecutors are expected to argue Clancy understood the nature of her actions despite the defense's mental-health claims. After the killings, Clancy allegedly attempted to take her own life by jumping from a second-story window, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. Her husband, Patrick Clancy, was out of the home running errands at the time and has since relocated to Manhattan. Anecdotally has been used for tendon/muscle healing; on the WADA banned list at all times (no TUE pathway currently). Gray areas exist in WADA criteria themselves (performance enhancement potential, health risk, "spirit of the sport"). THC example: banned in-competition with a relatively high threshold; removed alcohol from the list is an example of changes over time. Distinction between letter of the rules vs. moral/cosmic fairness; between intentional advantage-seeking and medical/recovery use. Testing realities & practical challenges Full USADA/WADA-style regimes require whereabouts reporting, out-of-competition testing, and significant lifestyle constraints (conflicts with the free-spirited, remote nature of trail/ultrarunning). Even gold-standard systems have loopholes (missed whereabouts, remote camps, short-acting substances timed around sleep windows). Half-measures are expensive, burdensome, and unlikely to deter determined cheaters. Middle-of-pack and age-group athletes face different calculus; many use legitimate medications (inhalers, etc.) that may or may not require TUEs depending on type and dose/threshold. Possible paths forward discussed Transparency and honesty should be encouraged rather than punished (both hosts respect that Hanes and McKnight disclosed BPC-157 use). Practical ideas: Optional "non-competitive / open" checkbox so athletes using regulated substances can still participate without affecting results/records. Tested vs. non-tested divisions (bodybuilding-style model). More education needed around legitimate medical use (TUEs, Global DRO checks). Focus should prioritize the small professional/elite tier where financial and competitive incentives are highest over age-group minutiae. Future regenerative medicine and longevity interventions will force further adaptation; sport has already accepted large performance gains from technology (super shoes) more readily than internal/medical ones. Influencers & broader culture Influencer economy adds complexity: financial incentives to promote products or share experimental practices; difference between sharing personal experience vs. recommending use. Transparency with clear caveats is preferred; pure anecdote-driven advice remains problematic. Societal issues (tribalism, algorithmic incentives, low scientific literacy) make clean solutions difficult inside a small niche like ultrarunning. Closing notes Both stress nuance over black-and-white absolutism Conversation aims to push the sport toward honest discussion of incentive structures rather than endless case-by-case outrage. While playing one of our fan sounds at home, we noticed that our dog was exceptionally quiet as people were making noise outside! We think he was trying to tell us something... That dogs find the sound of a fan super relaxing and it masks street noise! We knew he was onto something, so we made this fan sound for sleeping and relaxation specifically for dogs. We started playing this fan noise for him when we went out for the day or when we heard gardeners, delivery people or other dogs outside. Instead of barking, he slept peacefully through it all! Needless to say, the results blew us away!
