Or reimagined "Star Wars: Heir to the Empire" with Luke rebuilding the Jedi Order? We share our vision of a cinematic universe where Keanu Reeves' "Berserker" brings an immortal warrior's inner turmoil to life. Mitchell's gripping tale of a game warden battling poachers and a Predator in the wilderness adds yet another layer of excitement. These stories, with their rich characters and thrilling plots, beg to be adapted into visual spectacles. And it doesn't stop there. We venture into the fantastical worlds of Tolkien's "The Silmarillion" and the heart-pounding survival story of "Hatchet." Jared, Oriana and Ned discuss Oriana's choice of topic: the Noldor. Also termed the Deep-elves and, in early versions of the legendarium, the Gnomes – thankfully changed given unavoidable associations – they were one of the three ethnicities of the Eldar in general, the first Children of Iluvatar. As compared to the serene Vanyar and the many generally lower-key societies of the Teleri, the Noldor were the ones most driven by the desire to create and to learn about the world in general, though these tendencies, exacerbated by Melkor in his Valinorean captivity and the internal family strife of their royal house, resulted in all the many deeds of fame in Middle-earth on the one hand but also their near total destruction and eventual fading away on the other. By the time of The Lord of the Rings, only small societies and remnants were left, casting an influence on the course of events but not directing them. What can we learn from the stories of the women of the Noldor in particular, not just Galadriel but other figures such as Fëanor's mother Míriel and his wife Nerdanel or the Nargothrond princess Finduilas? What throughlines did Tolkien suggest in terms of how the Noldor both seemed the most human of the Elves as well as being driven by the same ambiguous creative impulses that haunted any number of beings in the legendarium? How does the decision to keep them from the center of the many arcs of The Lord of the Rings help shape the book into being the story that it is? And just how much of an obsessive creative type do you have to be to not only devise the writing system for your culture but to insist on sticking to a particular pronunciation because you're still mad about how things ended up with your family?Show Notes.Jared's doodle. In response to my request for video topics, viewer mariayonde suggested I might have been a bit hasty in concluding that William's talking purse in The Hobbit was just a fanciful embellishment by Bilbo to make his story more appealing to a younger audience. Instead, what if the purse was a Dwarf-made magical purse that came to the trolls the same way as the rest of their hoard, which contained famed swords from Gondolin? Here are my thoughts on this theory. Beren and Lúthien return. Lúthien heals the winter of Thingol. Melian cannot bear to look upon Lúthien, knowing that it is now their fate to be separated by death. Beren and Lúthien travel into Ossiriand and bear a son, Dior Aranel, the heir to Thingol. Maedhros attempts to rally the Eldar against Morgoth, but mistrust keeps them divided. The sons of Fëanor demand Thingol return the Silmaril that is rightly theirs, but he refuses. Maedhros gathers willing soldiers from Menegroth and from among Men and Dwarves. On the day of their assault, Maedhros' plans are frustrated by betrayal. 01:40 Dan reads pages 188-191 from the Silmarillion, 2nd Edition 14:31 Recap 15:53 Discussion "But now a cry went up, passing up the wind from the south from vale to vale, and Elves and Men liften their voices in wonder and joy. Twelve men make a final stand against the armies of Morgoth in Dorthonion: Barahir, his son Beren, and ten others. Sauron takes Tol Sirion and transforms it into an outpost for Morgoth. Morgoth captures many men and elves and makes them his thralls; but he also releases many back into Beleriand to sew treachery. 01:04 Dan reads pages 154-161 from the Silmarillion, 2nd Edition 24:57 Recap 26:11 Discussion with special guest Andy Norton "Rumour came to Morgoth of these things, and he was unquiet amid his victories; and he desired greatly to learn tidings of Felagund and Turgon. For they had vanished out of knowledge, and yet were not dead; and he feared what they might yet accomplish against him. Of Nargothrond he knew indeed the name, but neither its place nor its strength; and of Gondolin he knew nothing, and the thought of Turgon troubled him the more. Therefore he sent forth ever more spies into Beleriand." Greg, Dan, and Cameron discuss the greatest story you've never heard — the Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien (pages 125-139). 00:12 Chapter 15 and 16 Recap 03:20 Discussion 43:40 NEW Format "Ulmo came to him once again, and spoke with him. And he said: 'Now thou shalt go at last to Gondolin, Turgon; and I will maintain my power in the Vale of Sirion, and in all the waters therein, so that none shall mark thy going, nor shall any find there the hidden entrance against thy will. Longest of all the realms of the Eldalië shall Gondolin stand against Melkor. But love not too well the work of thy hands and the devices of thy heart; and remember that the true hope of the Noldor lieth in the West and cometh from the Sea.'"
