Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we start a new series on 2005's Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. We set it in its time, talk about the Clancy of it all, and then get into the play and presentation. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: The first level or two Issues covered: missing a week, games from 2005 and UbiSoft, stealth games and how we feel about them, what it borrows from its forebears, Tim's history and love of military themes, grounding the series in real places, hard milspec, the spectrum of more or less video-gamey, Brett's history with Clancy, offputting tone and writing, the weird nationalistic lens, the military melodrama, when you can mess up the formula, black and white and the icks, systems thinking in the game vs not the narrative, finding ways to maintain the black and white, the tutorial videos, seeing the mechanics against the real missions, controlling Sam's movement speed, other interface choices, alt-fire modes, shooting everyone in the head, having multiple kill moves, having mission objectives that get canceled, whether there's an alternate version, a number associated with your performance, the weirdness of speaking to your handler directly behind a target, your advisors, informing the choice of loadout, how different games reinforce the loadout, a review, Tim's Twitch drop. Join Here: https://ow.ly/msoH50WCu0KDive into the ongoing turbulence in the video game industry with this segment of Notorious Mass Effect, where Analytic Dreamz examines the wave of layoffs sweeping through major studios in March 2026.As of mid-March 2026, the industry has seen approximately 1,700–2,000+ job losses year-to-date, following over 9,000 in 2025—lower than peak years but still deeply impactful. GDC 2026's State of the Industry report reveals 28% of global developers laid off in the past two years (33% in the U.S.), with half reporting recent cuts at their companies.Key March 2026 developments include:Ubisoft's Red Storm Entertainment (March 19): ~105 layoffs, ending game development at the 30-year-old studio known for Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six, and Splinter Cell. It shifts to global IT services and Snowdrop engine support amid Ubisoft's cost-reduction restructuring.Crystal Dynamics (March 19): 20 layoffs across development and operations, part of repeated cycles (prior rounds in 2025 totaled ~67). Major projects like the next Tomb Raider remain unaffected, reflecting ongoing "optimization" under Embracer/Saber.Warner Bros. Games Montréal (March 13–16): Undisclosed layoffs impacting narrative, level design, production, and more—linked to corporate instability from the Paramount–Skydance acquisition and post-acquisition efficiency reviews (following 99 cuts in 2024).Electronic Arts' Battlefield studios (early March): Significant but undisclosed layoffs across DICE (Sweden), Criterion (UK), Ripple Effect (California), and Motive (Canada). This follows Battlefield 6's record-breaking 2025 success as best-seller with millions sold quickly—highlighting that commercial wins do not guarantee job security, driven instead by realignment for live-service sustainability. Broader drivers include post-pandemic over-expansion corrections, soaring AAA costs, investor profitability demands, live-service shifts, and rising AI adoption (36% reported). Patterns show success-independent cuts, studio pivots from full development to support roles, micro-layoff cycles, M&A instability, and growing unionization pushes.Analytic Dreamz unpacks how these layoffs signal structural realignment—lean operations, centralized tech, and live-service focus—rather than a temporary downturn. Even blockbuster franchises fail to shield teams, underscoring workforce volatility and calls for stronger protections in a contracting landscape.Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Join Here: https://ow.ly/msoH50WCu0KIn this segment of Notorious Mass Effect, Analytic Dreamz breaks down Ubisoft's 2026 major reset—a sweeping organizational, operational, and portfolio overhaul announced to reclaim creative leadership and restore sustainable growth under CEO Yves Guillemot.Ubisoft has restructured into five decentralized Creative Houses, each with full ownership over specific genres and brands: Vantage Studios (CH1) scales AAA franchises like Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six; CH2 focuses on competitive/co-op shooters including The Division, Ghost Recon, and Splinter Cell; CH3 handles live-service titles such as For Honor, The Crew, Riders Republic, Brawlhalla, and Skull & Bones; CH4 drives immersive fantasy and narrative games with Anno, Might & Magic, Rayman, Prince of Persia, and Beyond Good & Evil; CH5 targets casual/family-friendly experiences like Just Dance, mobile hits, and licensed titles. This shift addresses escalating AAA costs, market competition, and trends toward mobile and Games-as-a-Service, prioritizing open-world adventures and GaaS-native experiences while investing in player-facing generative AI.The reset includes significant cuts: employee count reduced to 17,097 (from 20,729 in 2022, a net loss of 3,633), selective studio closures (including Halifax and Stockholm), and a "final" €200 million savings push, with €234 million more planned over two years. Six games canceled (including Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake and unannounced titles), seven delayed (potentially impacting Assassin's Creed projects and Beyond Good & Evil 2), and four new IPs in development (including March of Giants).Financially, expect short-term hits in FY2026-2027: €386 million gross margin reduction, €650 million R&D depreciation, and €350 million net bookings drop. A mandatory five-day in-office policy has sparked internal unrest and backlash against leadership.Analytic Dreamz explores the implications for Ubisoft's future, from agile decision-making and long-term sustainability to employee sentiment and investor reactions in this in-depth analysis.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/analytic-dreamz-notorious-mass-effect/donationsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

With Assassin's Creed Shadow sales numbers still a mystery, it's obvious that Ubisoft might be in some trouble. Investors are becoming very vocal with their concerns and direction of the company. Some are even suggesting a company restructuring. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has plans to focus on Ubisoft's Big 3 (Assassin's Creed, Rainbow Six, and Far Cry) to turn things around for the studio, but will this be enough?

Finally, we look at Rainbow Six's lasting influence, from its impact on tactical shooters to its evolution into a cornerstone of competitive gaming. This week Nathan, Gita, and Riley briefly talk about their true passion, shirts, before elegantly segueing into a conversation about Ubisoft's extremely eventful week: The embattled publisher announced that it's spinning off its most successful series, including Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six, into a separate subsidiary thanks to a $1.25 billion investment from Chinese conglomerate Tencent. What does this mean for those remaining aboard the Ubisoft mothership? And will this lead to even more heads rolling following layoffs and studio closures in December? Then we move on to the AI abomination of the week: an image filter based on the works of Studio Ghibli, whose most famous creative, Hayao Miyazaki, once called AI “an insult to life itself.” After that, we give our final appraisal of Severance season two, which was not perfect, but which managed to hit some impressive high notes and benefited from largely focusing on characters over mystery box shenanigans. Gita doesn't love Ben Stiller's directorial style, and Riley doesn't think Severance is necessarily a Smart Show, but those things don't prevent it from being good, if that makes sense. If it doesn't, listen to the episode! Finally, we come up with a simple solution to the problem of mass media illiteracy: change all of society. Seems like something we can knock out in a day or two, so let's get cracking.Credits- Hosts: Nathan Grayson, Gita Jackson, & Riley MacLeod- Podcast Production & Ads: Multitude- Subscribe to Aftermath!About The ShowAftermath Hours is the flagship podcast of Aftermath, a worker-owned, subscription-based website covering video games, the internet, and everything that comes after from journalists who previously worked at Kotaku, Vice, and The Washington Post.
