In this episode of Ukrainian Jewish Heritage, we explore the origins, purpose, and lived reality of the Pale of Settlement. Created by Catherine II in 1791 after the partitions of Poland, this vast territory confined the largest Jewish population in the world to 25 western provinces of the Russian Empire. Many of these provinces lay on captive Ukrainian lands the empire had already colonized — ruled by force, stripped for resources, and kept under tight military control. Several of those same areas lie within modern Ukraine's borders today, including regions now under Russian occupation. The episode traces the long Jewish presence in these lands, the shifting political forces that shaped their fate, and the alternating cycles of restriction, limited autonomy, and violent repression under successive Russian rulers. It also highlights the cultural, educational, religious, and economic life that flourished despite hardship, and the events that ultimately brought the Pale to an end in 1917.The geographic overlap between the former Pale and today's occupied Ukrainian territories underscores how imperial patterns of control and repression continue to echo in the present. In the lonely marshlands and mist-soaked valleys of Wales, strange lights have long been seen drifting silently through the darkness.Pale flames moving along forgotten roads.Lanterns with no hand to carry them.Omens of death.Tonight, storyteller Owen Staton invites you into the haunting world of the Canwyll Corph — the Welsh corpse candles — where grief walks beside love, where ancient superstition lingers beneath chapel bells and sea mist, and where a young doctor discovers that some lights are not meant to be followed.Rich with folklore, melancholy and eerie beauty, The Grim Lights is a deeply atmospheric tale of loss, longing and the flickering boundary between this world and the next.So settle beside the fire, listen to the wind at the window… and if you glimpse a pale flame moving in the darkness beyond the glass…Don't follow it www.welshstoryteller.comwww.ko-fi.com/owenstatonwww.patreon.com/owenstaton7

In this proglicious episode, the Shit Talk yahoos dive deep into A Pale White Dot, examining why even the most polished metal records can feel a little off to some listeners while being absolutely perfect to others. Some tracks blast into your face like a freight train, while others meander into synth-rich territory that leave some folks yearning for more of the heavy. They get into their standout moments from the record—highlighting Will Ramos's explosive performance on Subhuman and the riff-driven force of Malevolent and explore why experimentation and moving away from a certain style can sometimes feel hit or miss. John and Derek also get into the band's unconventional songwriting process for this album, how digital tools and AI are transforming music production, remixing, and even artist originality, the shifting expectations of heavy versus mellow, and how personal taste shapes our perception of a “good record” and why the future might see fans customizing their albums, remixing tracks, or even cutting songs altogether. Why does this matter? Because in a world where bands push boundaries more than ever, understanding the risk and reward of artistic experimentation can open new listening horizons—or expose you to music that's not for everyone. If you love metal, appreciate musical craftsmanship, or are curious about the future of music creation you might just dig this episode. (Or you might totally disagree and tell the guys to jump off a cliff.) Hang out for a second as they celebrate the artistry, debate the boundaries, and reflect on what it truly means to be an “objectively good” record in the age of AI and endless options. Whether you're a die-hard fan or just exploring heavier sounds, there's something here to challenge your perspective—and maybe even change how you consume music. #periphery #apalewhitedot #mishamansoor #markholcomb #jakebowen #matthalpern #spencersotelo #nolly #adamnollygetgood #3dotrecordings #metal #djent #progmetal #mathrock #guitar #drums #mrgod #subhuman #juggernaut #alphaomegawww.shittalkreviews.comSpotify - https://tinyurl.com/STR-SpotifyApple Podcasts - https://tinyurl.com/STR-Apple-PodcastsDrop us a line! The Pale Yellow Man | Paranormal Podcast We've got three listener submissions this episode, starting with a 13-year-old cleaning a warehouse where Bay 4 carried a heavy, wrong feeling from day one — complete with disembodied clicking sounds that circled the room like a predator, shadow legs with no body, and one final crash in the dark that sent them sprinting out and never coming back. Then we headed to England, where a guy waiting for his early morning Uber caught something pitch black sprint across his kitchen doorway at an impossible speed, and turned to find the straps of his work bag swinging violently on their own with nothing nearby to explain it. And the last one comes from a listener in Paradise, California, who woke one night to a tall, impossibly thin figure in her doorway with jaundice-yellow skin stretched tight over sharp cheekbones, hollow black eyes, and eventually heard it creak down toward her ear and chuckle before everything went black...

This episode features first-hand narration and submissions from our community. The most terrifying stories aren't the ones passed down through centuries—they're the ones happening right now to people just like you. In this special episode, we hand the microphone over to four members of the Spooky Appalachia family to share their personal, unexplainable encounters with the creatures that call these hills home. From the fog-heavy roads of West Virginia to the military-monitored hollers of the Mid-Ohio Valley, these fans recount the moments their reality shattered:The Route 7 Stalker: A driver in Wetzel County, WV, realizes the "skinny bear" he saw a decade ago was actually a bipedal, canine-like hunter that has claimed the highway as its own.The Winged Gentleman of Ruffin: Near the infamous Satan's Bridge (Danville, VA line), two friends witness a silent, human-shaped figure in a duster and wide-brimmed hat glide effortlessly over their car.The Carroll County Invisible: A Maryland commuter describes the gut-wrenching feeling of being hunted by a transparent, humanoid entity swinging through the treeline. The Mid-Ohio Valley Siege: A family's encounter with a spindly "Pale Walker" leads to a chilling military presence, Blackhawk helicopters, and a terrifying realization that the creatures can mimic the sounds of their own hounds. These are the voices of those who have seen the "veil" grow thin. Listen as they describe the sights, the smells, and the lingering dread of Appalachian cryptids.Want to share your own story on the show? Traditionally, interior designers in the UK were well-heeled, well-connected lady decorators with good posture and expensive handbags, creating interiors for people just like them. One could even go so far as to say ‘Pale, Stale and Female'. It felt like this would never change, but then, in 2020, seemingly out of nowhere, a charity called United in Design appeared with a mission to shine a light on the issue and do something about it! Jeff and Susie welcome Alex Dauley and Eman Akbar from United in Design to talk about the charity, explain what exactly did they set out to do and find out how are they doing it? In this lecture, we glimpse our best selves and compare that to a world where we lose everything of ourselves to AI. We are glorious creations that revel in agency, freedom and creativity. What do innovations such as cars that don't need us to drive and creative AIs that remove the effort of, say, writing or music making mean in this context? Further, with a future being forged by limited perspectives, how can human diversity inform better AI for all? This lecture was recorded by Professor Matt Jones on the 17th of March 2026 at Barnard's Inna Hall, LondonMatt Jones is a computer scientist at Swansea University - and a Fellow of the British Computer Society - who works alongside colleagues from many other disciplines and directly with everyday folk across the world to explore the future of digital technologies. Over the last 30-plus years, this human-centred approach has led to novel approaches for, amongst other things, mobile phone-based information searching and browsing, pedestrian navigation, voice assistants and deformable displays. Much of his work has been driven by intense and sustained engagements with “low resource” communities from informal settlements in India, South Africa, and Kenya. Through their generous and gracious participation, these extra-ordinary users with the fresh and diverse perspectives have stimulated insights into the future of digital technologies for everyone, globally. In all this work, Matt works as part of a long-standing collaborative team with Jen Pearson, Simon Robinson and Thomas Reitmaier (from Swansea) and colleagues in India (including Dani Raju) and South Africa (including Minah Radebe). His work has been supported by the UK's science funders (EPSRC and UKRI). Currently, this funding includes a Fellowship to explore the future of interactive AI and leadership roles in responsible AI and inclusive digital technologies. This funding has led to a series of impactful publications, talks and influences on people, policies, and practices. Matt has collaborated with private, public and third sector organisations, including Microsoft, the NHS, Google, IIT-B, the BBC and IBM. He is a member of the Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office's Research Advisory Group and Welsh Government's AI reviews. The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/watch-now/ai-humanityGresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters.
Paléficat tells the story of the uncertain future of a piece of land. The certainty of a landscape transformation, the new face of which almost no-one yet knows. Probably the disappearance of the last traces of the market garden belt in the Toulouse metropolitan area.
The story of the expulsion from Moscow in 1891 was told at length in the previous episode of Jewish History Soundbites. The feedback generated from that saga has led to another look at two related topics. Expulsions of Jews in recent history, and the Moscow Jewish community under the Czars. Regarding the former, what constitutes an expulsion? Is it limited to a formal expulsion edict, or living conditions that are nearly impossible for Jews that they are forced to leave? What was the Moscow Jewish community like at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries? Who were the members of the Jewish financial elite who resided there, and was it possible to maintain a religious lifestyle so far from the Pale of Settlement? This episode is sponsored by Sofer AI. A retired United States Forest Service firefighter is breaking thirty-five years of silence to share what he and his entire Helitack crew witnessed during the devastating California fires of 1987.Kyle— as he asks to be called— was a thirty-two-year-old veteran wildland firefighter when his nine-man crew was helicoptered into a remote drainage in the Mendocino National Forest ahead of an advancing fire front.Their mission was to cut a firebreak along an isolated ridge and spend three days in some of the most rugged terrain in Northern California. What they encountered there changed every one of them. It started with footprints in a creek bed—massive, clearly defined humanoid tracks in three distinct sizes, suggesting a group moving through the area. Then came the tree structures. Saplings twisted and snapped eight to ten feet off the ground with a force none of the men could replicate, arranged around flattened bedding areas saturated with an overwhelming musky odor.s darkness fell on their first night, the forest came alive.Bone-rattling howls echoed across the ridges. Rhythmic wood knocks circled their camp. Then came a rapid series of clicks and guttural chatter—two voices communicating with a cadence that sounded disturbingly like language. Rocks began landing in their camp from the darkness, thrown with precision but never striking anyone. And then the eyes appeared. Pale yellowish-white eyes glowing from the tree line… eight feet or more above the ground. On the second night, one of the creatures stepped fully into view.Every man on the crew saw it.A massive figure—eight and a half to nine feet tall—covered in dark hair, with enormous shoulders, long powerful arms, and a broad face dominated by intelligent eyes studying the firefighters with unmistakable awareness.Over the next three days, the crew found thirteen-inch handprints pressed into the dirt along their fire line. They watched juveniles observing them from the rocks above—only to be called back into the timber by deep, guttural parental warnings. What they were witnessing looked unmistakably like a family. When the helicopter arrived to extract them on the final morning, all six creatures stood openly on a distant ridge, silhouetted against the smoky sky. The large male stood in front. The female held a smaller one close. The juveniles stood beside them. A family… watching as the firefighters lifted away and the forest burned behind them. The crew made a pact that day to never speak about what they saw. And every one of them kept that promise. Until now. Kyle writes in at seventy-one years old because time is running out… and hearing other first responders share their encounters on this show finally gave him the courage to tell his story. He says he has always wondered if that family survived the fires. And he sincerely hopes they did.Have you experienced a Bigfoot sighting, Sasquatch encounter, Dogman experience, UFO sighting, or any unexplained cryptid or paranormal event deep in the woods? We want to hear your story.Email your encounter to brian@paranormalworldproductions.com for a chance to be featured on a future episode of Backwoods Bigfoot Stories.Backwoods Bigfoot Stories is a paranormal storytelling podcast featuring real Bigfoot encounters, Sasquatch sightings, Dogman reports, cryptid experiences, and true scary stories from the backwoods.Follow the show and turn on automatic downloads so you never miss a chilling encounter from the forest. The Jewish community of Moscow in the late 19th century was composed of Russian Jews who were permitted residence outside of the Pale of Settlement. In 1891 the Czarist government reversed its policy of selective integration and about 30,000 Jews were expelled from Moscow. This expulsion was a tragedy for the refugees, and a sense of disillusionment for Russian Jewry at large. Its reverberations were felt in the realm of emigration, radicalization and the rise of Zionism. More broadly, the phenomenon of expulsion itself as a recurring tragedy in Jewish history, is a bit unique in the case of Moscow. Send a textAfter an enthusiastic recommendation from former guest, Cameron Scott, Andy Batt streamed into a late night EDT interview of Playwright's Spotlight, and, as always, what an insightful and inspirational conversation it was. In this interview, we discuss the origins and evolution of Andy's own playwriting and how it influenced the development of the MadLab theatre company and venue. We breakdown MadLab's themes and schedule, premises and rhythms as well as the market of Columbus, Ohio. We also discuss the the draw of original works, submission requirements, mistakes, details, process, and rejections, the importance of format (or lack there of) in addition to physical and dramatic action. We wrap our conversation with criticisms or love of the classics and absurdists, simplicity vs complexity, and advice for taking that "leap".Andy Batt started in theatre in 1997 with no experience, training, and have never even thought about doing a play before, and after a couple years of the acting bug, his best friend and mentor brought him over to MadLab, a non-profit organization where they started producing original work together. Now, almost 30 years later, he has done almost every job there is to do in theatre - from acting, directing, and playwriting. In 2009, he was able to shepherd MadLab through the process of buying its own space in downtown Columbus, OH. Each year they produce five to seven original productions including "Theatre Roulette", the longest-running shorts festival in Ohio. For tickets to MadLab's 2026 Theatre Roulette season visit - https://ci.ovationtix.com/35811To view the video format of this episode, visit the link below - https://youtu.be/g65kmGtSrI0Links to sites and resources mentioned in this episode - MadLab - https://www.madlab.net/index.htmlLenaea High School Theatre Festival - https://www.lenaea.org/Play Submissions Helper - https://playsubmissionshelper.com/Websites and socials for Andy Batt and MadLab Theatre -www.madlab.netFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/andy.batt.18IG - https://www.instagram.com/andypbatt/Websites and socials for James Elden, Punk Monkey Productions and Playwright's SpotlightPunk Monkey Productions - www.punkmonkeyproductions.comPLAY Noir -www.playnoir.comPLAY Noir Anthology –www.punkmonkeyproductions.com/contact.htmlJames Elden -Twitter - @jameseldensauerIG - @alakardrakeFB - fb.com/jameseldensauerPunk Monkey Productions and PLAY Noir - Twitter - @punkmonkeyprods - @playnoirla IG - @punkmonkeyprods - @playnoir_la FB - fb.com/playnoir - fb.com/punkmonkeyproductionsPlaywright's Spotlight -Twitter - @wrightlightpod IG - @playwrights_spotlightPlaywriting services through Los Angeles Collegiate Playwrights Festivalwww.losangelescollegiateplaywrightsfestival.com/services.htmlSupport the show
In this Horror Joy episode, Jeff and Brian discuss the 1992 film Candyman as the final entry in an “academic horror” course, focusing on how the movie links urban legend, the university, and racialized violence. They follow graduate student Helen Lyle's dissertation research into the Candyman myth at Chicago's Cabrini-Green, highlighting how academic distance and the “white gaze” turn Black suffering, especially Daniel Robitaille's lynching, into an object of study. Drawing on writers such as Zayla Crocker, George Yancy, Kimberlé Crenshaw, and Robin R. Means Coleman, they argue the film reflects its early-1990s moment (including Rodney King and the Los Angeles uprising), critiques systemic racism and misogyny, and frames Helen as both privileged researcher and exploited academic.

The insurance industry is purposely complex. Many brokers use confusing jargon and convoluted strategies to maintain the status quo and protect their commissions. But in today's market, complexity kills deals. If you want to stand out to a CFO or HR leader, your ultimate competitive advantage is clarity. My guest, Nicole Quinn-Miles, an employee benefits expert at Marsh McLennan, joins me to discuss why clear, direct communication is the key to driving execution and winning business. We break down why you need to stop trying to be "interesting" and start being "interested," how to explain complex benefit strategies so clients actually take action, and why true trust requires radical honesty.
