This talk is continuing our conversation about nonduality. One of the core dualities we are trained into is subject and object duality. The theme of this talk – recognising our essential self as awareness – and some of the experiential exercises are taken from a book called “Standing as Awareness” by the nondual philosopher Greg Goode. Last month I spoke about the Koan of the goose in the bottle. This represents “normal” experience of duality – the goose in the bottle is a description of the self-centred dream – we are trapped, or identified as, a separate body-mind self that is the activity of suffering. Practice can be described as shifting from our identification with the self-centered dream (the goose in the bottle) this limited body and mind which we take to be me, towards recognizing and establishing ourselves as being awareness itself. This is our journey from suffering in the self-centered dream to discovering our in freedom when we recognize ourselves as awareness (there never was a bottle in the first place) – is the journey to our home which we never left.

Pitṛpakṣa is a 16–lunar day period in the fall when we pay homage to our ancestors. The purpose of this tradition is to not just appease generations of our ancestors in another realm, but also to free ourselves of kārmic bonds. Ordinarily, even when we are aware of this tradition, our focus isn't on the internal freedom from ancestral patterns that keep us bound. In this workshop, we will explore the role of this tradition and how it can be used to turn inward and to learn to discard deeply held beliefs and patterns that keep us from experiencing joy, freedom, and lightness. In this episode, Dr. Chris has Greg Goode on to discuss the importance of the 8th step: "Run the Route". Though a simple sentence, running a timed delivery route in a manufacturing facility to effectively and efficiently deliver material to the fingertips of the operator is no easy task.

I was really excited when today's guest, Kavitha Chinnaiyan reached out about sharing her new book with me, Shakti Rising. As many of you know I love studying archetypes and have a deep appreciation for stories and mythology about goddesses. As well, her big truth kicked off our chat with a bit of mystery, which I also always love. Her truth was: There is much more to life than what we see. From there we explored: -How we're all far more than our limited identities. -How yoga and spirituality stemmed from being men's practices and few spiritual paths are tailored for women, with those that are traditionally, being quite hidden. -We talked about her intentions for writing the book - to clarify conversations around the "Divine Feminine" and what The Goddess is. I loved this line she said, "There is nothing in existence that isn't her..." -We got into making your life your practice and navigating spiritual materialism and elitism along the way. -And she also shared some of the differences between her spiritual beliefs and her husbands and how they instill beliefs, practices and rituals with their kids despite any differences. I loved this chat and hope you do too! About Kavitha Chinnaiyan: Kavitha Chinnaiyan, MD, is an integrative cardiologist, meditation teacher and tantrika. Greg is a teacher of nondualism well known for a breadth of expression and a sense of humor. Inspired by Sri Atmananda Krishna Menon, Greg is one of the pioneers, along with Jean Klein and Francis Lucille, of "direct-path" style nondualism, a very intuitive, holistic and immediate form of Advaita. It was through contemplation on the teachings of Sri Atmananda that Greg's own search came to its peaceful conclusion. Having studied Western philosophy at the Universität zu Köln in Cologne, Germany, Greg received his M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Rochester. He studied Advaita Vedanta through the Chinmaya Mission, the Mahayana teachings of Pure Land Buddhism through Jodo-Shinshu, and studied Madhyamika Buddhism through the lineage of the pre-eminent scholar of Chinese Buddhism, Master Yin-Shun of Taiwan, P.R.C., author of The Way to Buddhahood: Instructions from a Modern Chinese Master. Greg is the technical consultant for Philosophical Practice, the Journal of the American Philosophical Practitioners Association. He is also the author of Nondualism in Western Philosophy, Standing as Awareness, the forthcoming The Direct Path: a User Guide, and the forthcoming Emptiness and Joyful Freedom. Greg's website: greg-goode.com From the "About" page: "Emptiness teachings are widely held to be liberating. The purpose of this site is to present the wide variety of these teachings in a way that will help make them accessible and relevant. We will feature scholarly, experiential and popular approaches to the emptiness teachings, and we will honor the diversity of traditions from which they flow. Our goal is to highlight the power and appeal of these teachings so that they may do their work." Interview recorded 12/24/2011 Video and audio below. Audio also available as a Podcast.
