Ep. 179 (Part 1 of 2) | In this podcast, John Prendergast, spiritual teacher, depth psychotherapist (retired), and prolific author, eloquently lays out the territory we encounter on the spiritual path as we move towards opening to our deepest ground. John defines deepest ground as “ungraspable and unfathomable, something we can know intimately as a quality of awareness, unbounded and open.” “When we touch into this,” he continues, “we move from a place of love, peace and groundedness.” In working with students and clients over four decades, John says the presence or absence of ground has been the most important theme. John has a gift for communicating exactly what is most useful for a spiritual practitioner to hear: taking an integral and nondual approach different from traditional psychotherapy, he invites us to evoke presence—welcome the experience, welcome the fear of annihilation—let go of ordinary knowledge and allow a translucent, transformative space to emerge around ordinary mind. Blending archetypal wisdom and guidance with spacious emptiness, John explains that opening to unbounded awareness supports the process of individuation and actualization; he also weaves in an intriguing version of the hero's journey, where the hero emerges from the underground, not as a figure of accomplishment and victory, but as a simple, humble being, void of ego. The rich wisdom and gentle guidance offered here is invaluable, worthy of listening to many a time. Recorded November 7, 2024.“Transcendence is a beautiful first step… but there's a very important process of embodying awareness more and more deeply, in the physical body, in the subtle body.”Topics & Time Stamps – Part 1Introducing John Prendergast, Ph.D., retired psychotherapist, spiritual teacher, and author, whose most recent book is Your Deepest Ground (00:57)What is our deepest ground? (04:29)The fear of losing control, of annihilation, that comes up in the process of healing and awakening (06:47)Using the myth of the underground descent, but emerging not as a hero, but simple and humble—devoid of egoic will (09:29)A translucency of the body/mind emerges: a core illumination (13:18)Meditation, self-inquiry, and time with authentic teachers are what have brought John to luminosity (15:09)The connection to one's teacher: for John, this was Jean Klein and Adyashanti (16:25)Back to returning to the world—not as a hero, but where there's no sense of accomplishment and hierarchy disappears (17:55)The tyranny of the enlightenment drive (20:42)Willfulness gradually transforms into willingness (24:07)Individual guidance can come as the small, still voice but also in kinesthetic form (25:25)Are there specific practices that facilitate opening to our deepest ground? (27:24)Evoking presence: John leads an invitation to welcome the experience, welcome the fear of annihilation (29:14)The difference between John's work and traditional psychotherapy (31:31)Beyond welcoming, John teaches a self-inquiry practice that asks, “Do I really want to know what is true?” (36:15) Working not just on personal limiting beliefs but existential limiting beliefs—e.g., “I am a separate self” (39:19)Recognizing the limitation of rational thought, a transformative space emerges around ordinary mind...

This week, we welcome Francis Lucille to the show, a renowned teacher of the nondual understanding, who has dedicated his life to helping individuals uncover the ultimate truth of consciousness and reality. Drawing from decades of exploration and teaching, Francis shares insights on some of the following topics: — The ultimate purpose of human life — Why happiness is our natural state — How psychological suffering stems from a belief in separation — Why saying “yes” to life aligns us with consciousness. And more. You can learn more about Francis's work and teachings at https://francislucille.com. --- Francis Lucille is a spiritual teacher in the tradition of Advaita Vedanta. A longtime friend and disciple of Jean Klein whom he met in 1975, he was a friend of Robert Linssen, Wolter Keers, Yvan Amar, William Samuel and Robert Adams. He was also influenced by J. Krishnamurti, Krishna Menon and Wei Wu Wei, whom he knew personally. Many contemporary Advaita teachers have attended his teaching events. Francis transmits the ancient teaching of nonduality, the common ground of Advaita Vedanta, Ch'an Buddhism, Zen, Taoism and Sufism. Francis' teachings are not “Neo-Advaitic” but traditional, which means that the experience of our true nature has been transmitted from generation to generation by a lineage of sages. They reflect those of his guru: appreciation for humor, art, music, and poetry, intellectual rigor with a “personal” twist due to his training in Mathematics and Physics, and emphasis on the body and its feelings. --- Interview Links: — Francis' website - https://francislucille.com

Awakening Together Presents Being Aware of Awareness Guided Meditations

In this episode a quote from Jean Klein was contemplated. "In the direct approach the premise is that you are the truth, there is nothing to achieve. Every step to achieve something is going away from it. The 'path; which strictly speaking is not a path from somewhere to somewhere, is only to welcome, to be open to the truth, the I am. When you have once glimpsed your real nature it solicits you. There is therefore nothing to do, only be attuned to it as often as invited. There is not a single element of volition in this attuning. It is not the mind which attunes to the 'I am' but the '| am'which absorbs the mind."

Citações e trechos do livro “The Ease of Being”, de Jean Klein. A resposta vem do silêncio". Músicas: Michael Vignola - A Feeling in the Air (https://artlist.io/song/38273/a-feeli...) Ep. 43 (Part 3 of 3) | Beena Sharma, president of the Vertical Development Academy (VeDA), gives a beautifully cogent explanation of the 8-stage, full spectrum model of adult psychological development, Vertical Development, illuminating us not only to the characteristics of each stage of development, but the implications and ramifications of each stage, the process of human development as a whole, and how this model can help us face our current metacrisis. Beena describes how “each stage is a way of seeing the world and oneself, a constellation of our beliefs and assumptions,” and we discover that our development takes form in patterns of evolving worldviews, a progression of capacities with which we make sense of the world. On an individual level, Beena asks, “Where is your foot nailed to the floor? Where are parts of you still ahead of you? How can this framework help you make a shift?” And collectively, “What does it mean for the human being to evolve? What makes us think humans at this time are at the end of the evolutionary ladder?” Vertical development focuses on the evolving ego, and interestingly, takes us to the stage where we realize the ego itself is only a construct—and beyond. As well as a brilliant unpacking of the vertical development model, this is a profound, warm-hearted conversation, about human evolution and possibility, the dance of the dual and the nondual, the infinitude of the psyche, and what it means to come home to oneself. "What does self-knowledge taste like, feel like? I assume it is not completely flavourless! The Self knows itself, of its own accord, without the intervention of any means. It cannot be described because it is not in the realm of comparison or complementarity. You cannot smell incense burning nor see the leaf of a plant without using the corresponding sensory organ, but consciousness knows itself all the while the varied aspects of manifestation occur. Water is not altered by the many different fish swimming in its depths, it is ever water. I can give you another analogy. You only taste the things that are in your mouth, the objects, but the mouth has its own taste."-Jean Klein, I Am"...when all taste is eliminated from the mouth, you arrive at the taste of the mouth itself. "-Jean Klein, I Am"Thoughts come and go. Feelings come and go.  Find out what it is that remains." - Ramana Maharshi "You are awareness. Awareness is another name for you. Since you are awareness there is no need to attain or cultivate it. All that you have to do is to give up being aware of other things, that is of the not-Self. If one gives up being aware of them then pure awareness alone remains, and that is the Self."- Ramana Maharshi "Everything is impermanent, except the love of God." - Maharajji "To have continuous water supply in a city, the pumps must be working day and night.  Likewise, in order to keep the heart filled with sweetness of the Divine presence, constant remembrance of Him is essential." - Anandamayi Ma "Whenever you possibly can, sustain the flow of a sacred Name. To repeat His Name is to be in His presence." - Anandamayi Ma Today's Practice: Stay aware of the taste of God's Love during every seeming appearance, just as you could stay aware of the taste of the mouth itself while tasting your food.  No matter how bitter or sweet the flavor of the moment, it can't mask the Divine Sweetness of Love.  It can't make you forget your Self.  Take a mantra and keep it on your lips and tongue at all times, so that you may taste the Love you are constantly.  Taste and SEE.  I Love you, Nik nikki@curlynikki.com

Stephan Bodian is a teacher in the nondual wisdom tradition of Zen, Dzogchen, and Advaita Vedanta and the founder and director of the annual School for Awakening, an intensive six-month program of exploration and study. His offerings are noted for their humor, warmth, spontaneity, and intimacy and combine direct pointers, lively dialogues, silent sitting, and guided self-inquiry. He's the author of several books, including Wake Up Now: A Guide to the Journey of Spiritual Awakening and Beyond Mindfulness: The Direct Approach to Lasting Peace, Happiness, and Love. Stephan spent a decade practicing Zen intensively as a monk but left the monastery because he sensed that the rigorous practice of meditation was obscuring the truth he was seeking. After studying Dzogchen for several years, he met his guru, Jean Klein, a European teacher of Advaita Vedanta, who told him to stop meditating and instead discover the meditator. Shortly after meeting Jean, he had a profound awakening to his true identity as timeless presence. After Jean's death, Stephan met Adyashanti, and in 2001 Adya gave him Dharma transmission and invited him to teach. Trained as a psychotherapist, Stephan also offers individual spiritual counseling and mentoring sessions to people throughout the world. His approach blends direct, experiential, nondual wisdom with the insights of Western psychology to support students in realizing who they really are while inquiring into the stories and patterns of thinking and behaving that continue to cause suffering. Some of the main points discussed in this interview: What does spiritual integrity really mean? Absolute and relative levels of truth “There is no right or wrong, but right is right, and wrong is wrong.” The role and deeper meaning of ethical precepts. Understanding the power dynamics of the teacher-student relationship. How teachers abuse their sacred responsibility and act out of integrity. “The teacher represents a whole world of meaning to the student.” Teachers who claim to be enlightened may relegate their students to endless endarkenment. Why narcissists are drawn to becoming spiritual teachers. How students are taken in by misguided teachers. The crucial role of discernment on the path: “The true guru is inside you”. The importance of peer feedback and personal counseling as teachers mature in their role. Sex in the forbidden zone: Wanderers, predators, and boundary confusion. Acknowledging and integrating the shadow. How to know when it's time to leave a teacher. The future of the spiritual teacher-student relationship in the West. The endless nature of the awakening journey. Website: stephanbodian.org Other books: Meditation For Dummies, w/Audio CD(Also available in various languages.) Rupert Spira came across the poetry of Rumi at the age of fifteen, in 1975, and soon after this met his first teacher, Dr. Francis Roles, at Colet House in London. Dr. Roles was himself a student of Shantananda Saraswati, the Shankaracharya of the North of India. Under his guidance Rupert learnt mantra meditation and was introduced to the classical system of Advaita, or non-duality, which formed the foundation of his interest and practice for the next twenty-five years. At the same time he also learnt the Mevlevi Turning, a sacred Sufi dance of movement, prayer and meditation. During this time he read everything available by the Russian philosopher P. D. Ouspensky and learnt Gurdjieff's Movements. In the late 1970s he attended Krishnamurti's last meetings at Brockwood Park, close to his childhood home, and was deeply impressed and influenced by his intellectual rigor and fierce humility. Throughout these years Rupert also studied the teachings of Ramana Maharshi and Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj on a continuous basis. In the same year that he discovered the poetry of Rumi, Rupert saw a retrospective exhibition of a well-known studio potter, Michael Cardew, at Camberwell Arts Centre in London, an event which was to change the course of his life. Already disenchanted with the scientific path on which he had embarked, he found that pottery provided a new avenue of exploration and experience, and one that was completely consistent with the questions evoked by his encounter with the non-dual understanding. As a result, in 1977 Rupert left school and enrolled in the Ceramics Department of West Surrey College of Art and Design, under Henry Hammond. In 1980 he moved to Wenford Bridge in Cornwall, where he lived and worked with Michael Cardew, then aged eighty, for the last two years of his life. Rupert once said that he was completely re-educated during the time he spent with these two founding fathers of the British Studio Pottery Movement, combined with his regular attendance at Colet House. In 1983 Rupert opened his own studio, and over the next thirty years he made pieces that are to be found in private and public collections around the world. A turning point in the mid-1990s led Rupert to the American teacher Robert Adams, who died two days after Rupert arrived in the US. However, on this visit he was told about another teacher, Francis Lucille, whom he met several months later. The first words he ever heard Francis say were, ‘Meditation is a universal “Yes” to everything'. Although it was the kind of statement anyone might encounter on the spiritual path, this moment was pivotal in Rupert's life: ‘I realised that I had arrived home, that this encounter was the flowering and fulfilment of my previous thirty years of seeking'. When Rupert asked at that first meeting what he should do next, Francis replied, ‘Come as often as you can'. Over the next twelve years Rupert spent all the spare time that work and family commitments would allow with Francis, exploring the sense of separation as it appears in the mind in the form of beliefs and, more important, how it appears in the body as feelings of being located and limited. Francis also introduced Rupert to the Direct Path teachings of Atmananda Krishna Menon and the Tantric approach of Kashmir Shaivism, which he had received from his teacher, Jean Klein. Of the essence of these years, Rupert writes, ‘The greatest discovery in life is that our essential nature does not share the limits or the destiny of the body and mind. I do not know what it is about the words, actions or presence of the teacher or teaching that seem to awaken this recognition of our essential nature as it truly is, and its subsequent realisation in our lives, but I am eternally grateful to Francis for our friendship.' Rupert lives in Oxford, UK, with his wife, Ellen Emmet, a therapist and yoga teacher in the non-dual tradition of Kashmir Shaivism, and his son, Matthew. He holds regular meetings in the UK, US, Netherlands and Italy, as well as online webinars and Retreats at Home.

How to truly uncover lasting happiness can seem like a lofty or impossible goal. But somehow, Rupert Spira makes it seem not just possible, but as clear as glacier water. I've wanted him on the show for a long time now, and I'm excited to share this incredible conversation. We dig into non-duality, the nature of time, the beauty of simple awareness, and what all the great spiritual traditions of the world were pointing to. Rupert Spira is an English teacher of the "direct path", a method of spiritual self-inquiry through talks and writing, and a notable English studio potter with work in public and private collections. Spira was deeply interested in the nature of reality from an early age. By age 17 he was studying meditation and practicing a classic Indian method of spiritual inquiry called Advaita Vedanta. He has studied with Dr. Francis Roles, Shantananda Saraswati, the Shankaracharya in, and is steeped in the wisdom of thinkers and mystics such as P. D. Ouspensky, Jiddu Krishnamurti, Rumi, Sri Ramana Maharshi, Nisargadatta, and Robert Adams. In 1997, Francis Lucille trained Rupert in the Direct Path teachings of Atmanada Krishna Menon and the Tantric approach of Kashmir Shaivism, which he had received from his teacher, Jean Klein. Rupert regularly holds meetings and retreats worldwide, exploring non-dual teachings from a diverse array of sources: Advaita Vedanta, Kashmir Shaivism, Hinduism, Buddhism, mystical Christianity, Sufism, and Zen.  He is the author of 8 books, including The Transparency of Things – Contemplating the Nature of Experience, The Ashes of Love, The Nature of Consciousness and The Essence of Meditation. “Whether we realize it or not, the heart is what we most carefully guard and most want to open.” John J. Prendergast, Ph.D., likens the investigation of the heart to “an archaeological dig.” Helping people excavate layers of the heart is a culmination of his life’s work weaving together the threads of his various professional disciplines – as a psychotherapist, professor of psychology, somatic healer and nondual spiritual teacher – with the glittery strands of his own deep self-inquiry. Prendergast believes that combining the “critically important service that mature, kind, and relatively clear psychotherapists offer” with spiritual insight can help people with what he terms “unfolding.” “I can often sense an essential dimension of being within my clients and students and help them attune with it.” “The deeper you go, the more tender the layers,” says Prendergast. “We abandon ourselves when it feels too painful to remain intimate with our essential nature.” Author of The Deep Heart (2019) and In Touch (2015), Prendergast is a retired Adjunct Professor of Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies and a very soon-to-retire psychotherapist in private practice in the Bay Area. He offers online and in-person (when possible) retreats in the U.S. and Europe. He has studied extensively with leading spiritual masters of our age. By his early adulthood, Prendergast was already a meditation guide to others – and himself was able to reach a profound silence. And yet he hungered for treasures buried much deeper, prompting him to fervently seek ever deeper inner truths. In his twenties, he completed a six-month meditation retreat and a year of law school, spent time in an ashram in South India, and eventually began graduate school. These experiences created a foundation for his next many years during which he became a licensed psychotherapist and continued to immerse himself in meditation and self-inquiry. Then, unexpectedly, Prendergast had an unanticipated dream involving an Indian guru of non-dualism, Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, with whom he had been unfamiliar. This inspired him to read Maharaj’s famous dialogues in I am That. This was a life-changing event for Prendergast, which he says turned his compass decidedly towards self-inquiry. Prendergast thereafter met Jean Klein, a European medical doctor and musicologist, who was a master of Advaita Vedanta and Tantric Shaivism, and Prendergast studied with Klein for fifteen years until Klein’s death in 1998. Passionately curious “to understand how psychology and spirituality intersected,” Prendergast eventually realized “that the apparent division between them was only in my mind.…I couldn’t find any human experience that was not essentially spiritual.” After Klein’s passing, Prendergast began studying with Adyashanti, a trained Zen Buddhist teacher who is a self-described “teacher of enlightenment.” Prendergast had “a number of profound openings” with Adyashanti and began leading self-inquiry groups and co-leading retreats for psychotherapists, with Adyashanti's blessing. Prendergast was also founder and editor-in-chief of Undivided: The Online Journal of Nonduality and Psychology which launched in October 2011 as a free, peer-reviewed, multimedia and interactive journal that published original works by cutting-edge therapists and spiritual teachers exploring the interface of nondual teachings and psychology. He also was co-editor of two collected volumes of essays at the intersection of psychotherapy and nondualism, The Sacred Mirror (2003) and Listening from the Heart of Silence (2007). Previously, for 23 years, he supervised masters’ level counseling students at the California Institute of Integral Studies (where he had earned his Master’s and PhD degrees).  Always driven by a desire to discover his own truest nature, Prendergast emphasizes the importance of uncovering the heart by shedding the false conditioning imposed by the ego’s sense of self and by the social tendency to prize the mind over all else. He delivers his teachings at a meditative, thoughtful pace (many are found online) coming from a clear mind and a compassionate heart. His latest book, The Deep Heart: Our Portal to Presence, focuses specifically on the heart’s role as our most “easily accessible portal to true nature,” building from his renowned book on somatics, In Touch: How to Tune In to the Inner Guidance of Your Body and Trust Yourself. While In Touch details “subtle portals” or “primary entry points leading to the essential,” Deep Heart, and his latest teachings, explore the heart as the place from which a “sense of meaning springs, as does our sense of oneness or communion with the whole of life.” He explains that in the “deepest dimension of the heart – what I call the Great Heart – you can feel yourself at one with the ground of being.” Prendergast himself is indeed of great heart. He reminds us that the heart, “deep, vast and loving … is where we feel most affected … both emotionally and spiritually.” Join us in conversation with this practical, gifted and compassionate master teacher – and explore how to become an archaeologist of your own heart.

Trechos do livro “I Am”, de Jean Klein. A resposta vem do silêncio". Jean Klein. =======================================

Welcome to another podcast of ‘Here's Tom with the Weather'...where we investigate the plethora of Higher powers that populate the vast universe of Recovery  - particularly where the founders of AA encourage us to find some kind of higher power – as long as it's not us....for example in  3rd Step of the Alcoholics Anonymous 12 STEP programme where it states  ‘MADE A DECISION TO TURN OUR WILL AND OUR LIVES OVER TO THE CARE OF GOD, AS WE UNDERSTOOD HIM' and also to the 11th Step where it states‘sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood him, praying only knowledge of his will for us and the power to carry that out'We speak to people with all manner of higher powers - from those who are atheists, sufis, agnostics, Christians, Buddhists, Followers of Islam, Paganists, AND...those who subscribe to NON-DUALITY...we leave no stone unturned...its our aim to promote understanding and open-mindedness so that alcoholics and addicts can find a higher power of their own to stay sober and carry the message. Please remember that this is not an AA meeting...its just some people's version of the truth – whatever that may be.Sometimes we talk to seekers, to gurus and to people not necessarily in recovery...such as Rupert Spira... Rupert Spira's spiritual journey started when he discovered Sufism and the poetry of Rumi in 1975 Soon after he learned mantra meditation and was introduced to the classical system of Advaita or Non-Duality. This formed the foundation of his interest and practice for the next 25 years.During this time he studied Ouspensky, Ramana Maharshi and Nisargadatta Maharaj and attended Krishnamurti's last meetings at Brockwood Park. During the late seventies and early eighties Rupert also trained as a ceramic artist – and started his first studio in 1983 making pieces that are to be found in private and public collections around the world.Meanwhile a turning point in his spiritual journey started in the mid 1990s led Rupert to an American teacher, Robert Adams, who died two days after he arrived. However, while visiting, Rupert was told about another teacher, Francis Lucille...Whom he met several months later. Over the next twelve years Rupert studied with Francis who introduced Rupert to the Direct Path teachings of ---At-Manan-da   Krishna-menon--- and the tantric approach of Kashmir Shaivism, which Francis had received from his own teacher, Jean Klein.Of the these years, Rupert writes, "The greatest discovery in life is to discover that our essential nature does not share the limits nor the destiny of the body and mind.He continues to teach and spread the word about non-duality and many of his teachings can be found on youtube and at his website Rupert lives in Oxford, UK, with his wife and unfortunately is a Manchester United fan.

Podcast: This week on The Mystical Positivist, we feature a conversation pre-recorded on February 28th, 2020 with Rupert Spira. From an early age Rupert Spira was deeply interested in the nature of reality. At the age of seventeen he learnt to meditate, and began studying and practicing the teachings of the classical Advaita Vedanta tradition under the guidance of Dr. Francis Roles and Shantananda Saraswati, the Shankaracharya of the north of India, which he continued for the next twenty years. During this time he immersed himself in the teachings of P.D.Ouspensky, Krishnamurti, Rumi, Ramana Maharshi, Nisargadatta, and Robert Adams, until he met his teacher, Francis Lucille, in 1997. Francis introduced Rupert to the Direct Path teachings of Atmanada Krishnamenon; Jean Klein and the tantric tradition of Kashmir Shaivism; and, more importantly, directly indicated to him the true nature of experience. In his meetings, Rupert explores the perennial, non-dual understanding that lies at the heart of all the great religious and spiritual traditions, such as Advaita Vedanta, Kashmir Shaivism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Mystical Christianity, Sufism, Zen etc., and which is also the direct, ever-present reality of our own experience. This is a contemporary, experiential approach involving silent meditation, guided meditation and conversation, and requires no affiliation to any particular religious or spiritual tradition. All that is required is an interest in the essential nature of experience, and in the longing for love, peace and happiness around which most of our lives revolve. Rupert is author of: The Transparency of Things – Contemplating the Nature of Experience (2008); Presence, in two volumes – The Art of Peace and Happiness and The Intimacy of All Experience (2012); The Light of Pure Knowing – Thirty meditations on the Essence of Non-Duality (2014); The Ashes of Love (2016); Transparent Body, Luminous World – The Tantric Yoga of Sensation and Perception (2017); The Nature of Consciousness – Essays on the Unity of Mind and Matter (2017); and The Essence of Meditation Vol. I – Being Aware of Being Aware (2017). He is also a notable English potter and studio potter with work in public and private collections. Rupert Spira will be LIVE STREAMING his upcoming Mercy Center Retreat from March 20th - 27th, 2020. Andrew Tootell's Ordinary Mind Zen Podcast

Vimalakirti, was a very wise lay practitioner who lived at the time of the Buddha. In reply to the question: “What is the Bodhisattva's Gate to the One and Only?” his response was silence. Silence is synonymous with nonduality. This is a guided meditation commenting on a short text on “Silence”, by a twentieth century nondual teacher called Jean Klein. Jean Klein was not in the Buddhist tradition. He was in a different tradition, Kashmir Shaivism. His lineage is quite influential in the west. One of his students, who now teaches, was a man called Francis Lucille, and Francis Lucille was the teacher of Rupert Spira.

Andrew Tootell's Ordinary Mind Zen Podcast

This guided meditation is a commentary on Silence by Jean Klein. Silence is our real nature. What we are fundamentally is only silence. Silence is not the absence of sound. Rather sounds appear in silence. Silence is another word for awareness or the Presence of Being. Being Silence although thoughts may arise, we are free of the identification with the apparent separate self. Silence is free from beginning and end. Where does silence begin or end? Or is it timeless? Silence has no beginning and no ending. It was before the beginning of all things. “Silence is our real nature. What we are fundamentally is only silence. Silence is free from beginning and end.”

[Flashback Tuesday] John J. Prendergast, PhD, is a psychotherapist, spiritual teacher, and founder and editor-in-chief of Undivided: The Online Journal of Nonduality and Psychology. John met his first teacher, Advaita master Jean Klein, in 1983 and began studying with one of our favorite teachers, Adyashanti, in 2001. For 23 years John was also a professor of psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco where Vanessa Scotto went to grad school. He is the author of an amazing book called In Touch; How to Tune In to the Inner Guidance of Your Body and Trust Yourself. We first came across John on the Buddha at the Gas Pump podcast where we were immediately drawn to his simple, yet profound, integration of Psychology and Spirituality. After Brooke Thomas sat with him on a weekend retreat a few months back we knew we needed to bring him on for a conversation we could share with all of you. In this conversation we cover so many topics including how to trust yourself and tune into your intuition, how to access genuine safety, and why the Ego is doomed to fail. This conversation is a delight and a revelation that can affect you for years to come. As the heart awakens, we feel more and more grateful for no reason.  – John Prendergast On this episode of the Plan Simple Meals Podcast, I’m really excited to talk with John Prendergast about making space for spirituality. I met John at a retreat in 2018 and so many of his teachings connect with things we end up talking about here on the podcast.   One of the most important aspects for me was quieting your mind. When John said, “Let’s just sit” it sounded so much easier than trying to meditate. If you are raising kids and dealing with how you were brought up and everything you have to do and all the world around you moving so fast, there’s so much coming at you that it’s really hard to hear the voice inside you. But, as John says, if we get quiet, we can start attuning to our inner knowing. We talk about the difference between thinking and awareness. John explains, “The thinking mind, the ordinary thinking mind, is really helpful in terms of practical problem solving but, it’s not very helpful in terms of actually recognizing what I would call our “true nature.” Getting out of the thinking mind helps us realize that. We talk about: How disconnecting from our thoughts brings relaxation and attention can then drop down much more easily into the body. Dealing with situations with our kids by getting quieter within ourselves and tapping into our inner wisdom This process not being selfish because it’s about self-indulgence, but actually it’s about true self intimacy. Using small breaks in your day to tune into yourself instead of looking at your phone or listening to the radio Recognizing our core limiting beliefs and then getting quiet and going to the heart, not the mind, for an answer and transformation How awareness can help us work through unfinished “stuff” in our lives—we need to notice where we feel it in our bodies and the stories we tell about it and finding the very core of it The power of gratitude practice and even deeper gratitude we’re alive and that we’re awake and that there is an extraordinary mystery of human life that’s unfolding John shares this practice: Take a little time out of your routine, say 10 or 15 minutes in the morning, before the day begins, to quietly sit in a comfortable place where you’re not going to be interrupted. Sit upright, comfortably. Close your eyes or have them partially open. Take a few deep breaths and just feel yourself held by whatever it is you’re sitting upon. Know that there’s no problem that you have to solve in the moment. Shift your attention down to the heart area or the belly. Use your breath to anchor your attention. Thoughts about what you need to do or plans for the day may arise. Just let them fall away. Begin to simply open to the silent, open sense of awareness. Let it deepen.   Attuning with the quietness can affect your whole day. This practice can take some time to get used to, so give it few weeks for a fair trial. BIO John J. Prendergast, Ph.D., is the author of In Touch: How to Tune in to the Inner Guidance of Your Body and Trust Yourself (Sounds True, 2015) and the forthcoming The Deep Heart: Our Portal to Presence (Sounds True, 2019). He is a retired adjunct professor of psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco and a psychotherapist in private practice. John studied for many years with the European sage Jean Klein as well as with Adyashanti, and he was invited to share the dharma by Dorothy Hunt. www.listeningfromsilence.com LINKS In Touch Deep Heart http://listeningfromsilence.com/ Byron Katie Doable Changes from this episode: SIT QUIETLY. Take about 10–15 minutes daily to sit quietly. Try using the practice that John outlines in the show.. Remember that thoughts will likely come into your head as you settle, but they will fall away. Don’t get discouraged; it takes some time to get used to this practice. Just keep showing up. DIG INTO WHAT DOESN’T GET DONE. Think about a project you didn’t get done that you really meant to do. How do you feel about that—and where do you feel it in your body? Get curious about that feeling. Notice any stories you are telling about the project or any core limiting beliefs related to it? Question that belief. Practice discernment—noticing things as they are without judging. Let yourself feel it. PRACTICE GRATITUDE. Write down something you are grateful for at the beginning and end of each day. Take a moment to be grateful for just being.
