In the profound Trika text virūpākṣapañcāśikā, we learn:vimatipadamaṅga sarvaṃ mama caitanyamātmanaḥ śarīramidam |śūnyapadādīlāvadhi dṛśyatvāt piṇḍavat siddham || 2 ||O dear one, all this from the void state to the play of the Divine including even that which is heretical (i.e impure), since it appears in Consciousness, is verily established as my own body for I myself am Consciousness!sampanno'smi kṛśo'smi snihyatkaraṇo'smi modamāno'smi |prāṇimi śūnyo'smīti ca ṣaṭsu padeṣvasmitā dṛṣṭā || 3 ||“I am rich”, “I am feeble”, “I am affectionate”, “I am happy”, “I am living”, “I am the void”: the self is seen in these six states! From this we can understand that the "Self" is quite elastic! It can identify with possessions, with the body, with the thoughts and emotions in the mind, with the vitality or flow of energy and also with the void! Even saying "no-self" is a kind of self-identification! Notice: the objects, the physical body, the mental body, the energy body and the void body...these are all ways the Self can identify itself. But what exactly is the Self? It is Pure Consciousness, with the ability to expand outward or contract inward. The Self is essentially elastic in nature. Ego is not an illusory thing to be renounced with a Shakti, a power to be reclaimed and properly channelled. The Indian-born tabla player and composer, teacher, and advocate Zakir Hussain, son of Ustad Alla Rahka, who passed away in late 2024, wasn't just a virtuoso improviser - he was one of the world's exceptional percussionists, working in many genres, and was the world's preeminent tabla master. He was a great communicator in many musical languages, including jazz, Afro-Cuban rhythms, Nigerian talking drums, or Indonesian gamelan; he was also a great listener and a bringer of joy (editor can't help herself.) One of the most exciting ways that Zakir Hussain shared tabla specifically, and percussion more broadly was by way of the Masters of Percussion Tour – which was exactly as stunning and marvelous as a music fan (especially a drum nerd) might ever imagine. Zakir turned the tabla into a global instrument by way of his incredible collaborations, playing with everyone from George Harrison to Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead, from John McLaughlin's Shakti and Yo Yo Ma's Silk Road Project; he's laid down beats for Scottish fiddlers Charlie McKerron (Capercaillie) and Patsy Reid (formerly of Breabach); played concertos with western orchestras, with and without banjo player Bela Fleck and bassist Edgar Meyer, and performed and recorded with scores of Indian classical musicians. Zakir Hussain enjoyed the different challenges that each new collaborator “will throw at him”. For this edition of the Soundcheck Podcast, Ustad Zakir Hussain joined Pandit Rahul Sharma, the son of illustrious santoor master Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, who established the pedigree of the santoor within Indian Classical Music. Pt. Rahul Sharma has since built on his father's style, “taking the santoor to new corners of the world”, (Darbar.org). Rahul Sharma has also collaborated widely across genres, having released some 60 albums, split between classical Indian music and more experimental recordings. Rahul Sharma and Zakir Hussain played in-studio in Oct of 2024, just about six weeks before Hussain passed away. - Caryn Havlik Set list: 1. Dhun: Misra Pahadi 2. Dhun Keharwa Sharma explains the roots of the santoor, and gives a quick demonstration of its 94 strings which require precise tuning: Zakir Hussain also gave an intimidatingly fast explainer of some of the syllables of tabla, what the left and right hand might do, with unbelievable and impressive speed: See their performances:
On this episode of the SoulScape Celebrations podcast, host Paul – D. Lowe, International Celebrant –talks to Padma Prakasha about his book, ‘The Christ Blueprint’, an inspirational map about the 13 qualities of Christ Consciousness. KEY TAKEAWAYS In 2007-8 I was travelling in the South of France with my then girlfriend and we visited the Mary Magdelene site church there. At dinner that night, suddenly and without warning, a radiant, sensual, holy, feminine energy appeared to me which stopped me in my tracks. This was my introduction to Mary Magdelene. The next day I felt the same feeling but with a sense of urgency and she began to share with me about the Apostles, the power of the womb, and the divine feminine. The narrative we’re normally given is that it’s just about Christ. But he couldn’t have done what he did here on Earth without Mary Magdelene, his loving wife and who was a very wise and powerful leader in her own right, and the Apostles as well. It was a co-creative, collective collaboration that anchored, ignited and introduced this Christ Consciousness on Earth again. A lot of people get it confused. They believe a woman’s in her power when she’s being more masculine. Actually the feminine Christed masters (more than Apostles) showed us that love is being in the feminine power, being in that radiant, sensual, sacred self, is also a feminine power, and to be able to embrace, not judge, everything and bring it into your own heart. Christ’s teachings have been mistranslated. If you look at his ‘I am’ mantras he says “I am the bread of life”, “I am the way, the truth and the light”. If you don’t understand that you’ll think that he’s saying that it’s only through him that you can access or be that, so you have to worship him. But, if you look a little bit deeper into the Aramaic, the tradition he came from and where he was taught, you can see that “I am” is based in a much more ancient wisdom tradition that he studied and was initiated into. The presence that is everywhere is know in all traditions as “I am”, it’s within everybody’s heart. BEST MOMENTS ‘Mary Magdelene was very much about divine/sacred union with the masculine as well as the divine'. ‘There were 4 key female Apostles: Mary Magdelene, Martha, Mother Mary, and Mary Salome and they all had different capacities'. ‘Each of the Apostles had a higher self, you could call them ‘masters’, and these worked through the human incarnations of the Apostles in order to get the divine purpose accomplished'. ’13 follows a natural rhythms: There are 13 Moons in the calendar, not 12. 13 is the magic number that allows you to tap into the natural rhythmic intelligence of life which has been known through every sacred tradition throughout history'. ABOUT THE GUEST Padma Prakasha is a wisdom author, vibrational media creator, visionary pioneer and public speaker bringing together ancient wisdom and modern science. Padma’s books, music and multimedia are drawn from the traditions he has been initiated into. His books include: The Power of Shakti, Womb Wisdom, Sacred Relationships (Inner Traditions), The Christ Blueprint, The Nine Eyes of Light: Ascension Keys from Egypt (NAB/Random House), Dimensions of Love, Shiva's Hologram: The Maheshwara Sutra and The Science of Sound (O Books). Shivaratri is made up of two words – Shiva & Ratri. The word Shiva means – “Shete tishthati sarvam jagat Yasmin sah shivah shambhuh vikararahitah” Shiva is the One in whom the entire universe rests, who is changeless and brings auspiciousness to everyone. Shiva is Pure Consciousness or the very life-spark in our heart. Consciousness is Sat-Chit-Ananda or Satyam Shivam and Sundaram. Shiva means auspicious, beautiful. Consciousness alone is truly beautiful because true beauty never fades, is eternal and changeless. Our Body, Mind & Intellect are inert. They appear to be sentient and beautiful only because of reflection of Consciousness. Ratri is formed of the samskrit root – Raa, which means to give. That which provides happiness and bliss is one meaning of Ratri. Parvati is one who is born to Parvatraj Himalaya. She signifies Prakriti or Shakti. She is the source of all matter, energy and diversity. In Samskrit, Shiva is masculine gender word. Ratri is feminine gender, is symbolic of Prakriti or Shakti. Maha-Shivaratri is the union of Shiva & Shakti(Parvati). It is also the night which provides illumination and bliss when Jiva unites with Shiva. May we do tapasya like Mother Parvati, with single-pointedness, subtlety, purity and persistence to discover our oneness with Bhagawan Shiva and truly celebrate Mahashivaratri. #shiva #shivaratri #shivarathri #hindu #hindufestival#parvati[marriage, shiva, festival, celebration, fasting, penance, union, wedding]

Guitarist John McLaughlin's career has been long and winding. From his early solo records and work with Miles Davis, he possessed a unique approach to the guitar that encompassed jazz and rock vocabulary, played with a biting tone and stellar, virtuosic technique. He's never stopped developing, and we're covering our favorite highlights of McLaughlin's career: his acoustic (and later electric) take on Indian music with Shakti, his more traditional jazz projects, and much more. There are lots of listening highlights in this episode and we've covered as much as we can: Mahavishnu Orchestra's first two records are undisputable; Tony Williams Lifetime's Emergency may be the birth of fusion guitar; McLaughlin's mid-career studies in Indian music are inspiring; his take on Coltrane in an organ-jazz setting is monumental. But we could still cover a whole other episode's worth.Sponsored by PRS Guitars: http://prsguitars.comFollow Nick: https://www.instagram.com/nickmillevoiFollow Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jasonshadrickGet at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.comCall/Text: 319-423-9734Podcast powered by Sweetwater. There's a lot of cultural clutter these days around 'The Goddess.' She appears everywhere, her many names are invoked free of context in a hundred thousand ways. She's what? An empowerment tool. An archetype. A self-help course. A political symbol. Something that is invoked to bring more creative energy or material abundance into our lives. Something that, in an individualistic modern world, always seems to have a whole lot to do with us. Yet the goddess, traditionally, is much more than this. She is the animating power of the universe itself, felt in bodies, realized in states of deep conjunctive rapture, accessed through ritual protocols, alive in trees and stones and living geography, alive in song, alive in the myths and stories of her, alive in sound, alive in longing, alive in trance, alive in the states of consciousness realized by those who feel her. This devotional episode honors the goddess as the animating power of creation, drawing on her texts, her myths, her songs, and on personal experiences of journey to her sacred seats to evoke her as a living presence rather than as a conceptual abstraction. With songs and slokas from special guest Nivedita Gunturi. Support the show
