I wanted to explore the relationship between spiritual wellbeing and physical health to make the somewhat surprising claim: intense spiritual practice can sometimes compromise health! This is because, in the course of intense sādhana, Kula Kundalinī, our personal Shakti, progressively loosens its hold on the physical body. As such, in this talk I argue for the importance of Hatha Yoga practice to purify the prāna, to purify the blood and to fortify the nerves to account for this strain on the system sketched out above. Many "spiritual emergencies" might come down to just this: experiences have occured in a body ill equipped to whitstand the electrical shock of realization So we must prepare the body! I want to share with you our Kaula heritage of Hatha Yoga as articulated by the Nath Sampradāya and I want to tell you the story of Kukuripa and the black dog, arguing for the power of mantra and the allyship of Kula Kundalini. We read a little bit from the "Life of Swami Vivekananda by His Eastern and Western Disciples" towards the end!I pray this conversation inspires you to take up the study and practice of Hatha Yoga in a systematic and dedicated way! Here is our full playlist of our Hatha Yoga classes over the years. Shakti is the universal life energy that flows through the body, mind, and heart, and its flow is the basis of all emotional and physical experiences. Blockages created from suppressed past experiences distort this flow, leading to mental, emotional, and physical suffering. Instead of releasing these blockages, most people try to manipulate the external world to avoid triggering them. True spiritual growth is the art of letting go of these blockages and allowing Shakti to flow freely. Ultimately, this leads to a life filled with love, joy, and Self-Realization. I'm releasing this episode a day early—because I can feel how much it's needed right now. So many of us are moving through deep cycles of light and shadow, expansion and contraction. You are not alone. On May 1st, I experienced a full day of Oneness—pure Light, complete Presence, a deep remembering of the true Self. And then, the next day… my skin broke out, my digestion slowed, my energy dipped. It felt like a crash—but it wasn't. It was a contraction. The natural exhale after the inhale. In this episode, I share the lived rhythm of spiritual awakening through the lens of Samsara—the spiral of life, death, and rebirth that pulses through every breath, every moment, every phase of our journey. I speak on Shiva and Shakti, the inhale and exhale of Consciousness, and why you're not going backwards when things feel low after a spiritual high. This is the path of Quantum Manifestation—not a linear rise, but a sacred rhythm. A return to Truth through both the opening and the closing. The Light and the body. You are not broken. You are remembering. On the fifth day of the waxing fortnight of the month Vaiśakh, we celebrated one of India's greatest and most celebrated philosopher-mystics of all time, Adi Shankaracharya. While many feel that Advaita Vedanta is juxtaposed to Tantrik philosophy since it features a "Brahman only without Shakti" model. However, there are at least 4 things that make Shankara an out and out Shakta Tantrika in my book. In this talk, as an offering at the lotus feet of the great master, we go over these four "Tantrik" elements in Sri Sri Shankaracharya's life and teaching!May this be an offering to Sri Shankara and the lineage. May it be an offering to Mā Ganga (today is Ganga Saptami) and the unceasing stream of wisdom that has flowed in India sine time immemorial!Lectures happen live every Monday at 7pm PST and Friday 10am PST and again Friday at 6pm PST.Use this link and I will see you there:https://www.zoom.us/j/7028380815For more videos, guided meditations and instruction and for access to our lecture library, visit me at:https://www.patreon.com/yogawithnishTo get in on the discussion and access various spiritual materials, join our Discord here: https://discord.gg/U8zKP8yMrMSupport the show
Why we need shakti along with bhakti, Sacramento - Chaitanya Charan by Exploring mindfulness, yoga and spirituality
What we consider the "self" is just a construct of experiences and thoughts we've accumulated and identified with, forming the ego or self-concept. True spiritual growth begins by detaching from this mental construct and discovering the witness consciousness within. The great yogis achieved this by going inward, letting go of distractions, and recognizing the source of consciousness itself. They discovered that pure consciousness is actually the same force that creates and sustains the universe, called "Chit Shakti" or conscious energy. By learning to release past mental impressions, one can awaken to their true divine nature, the conscious energy that is the basis of all creation and existence. This is recording 3 of 6 from a three-day meeting recorded on the 14th of May, 2000 in Coolangatta, Gold Coast, Australia. These materials were recently digitized and modernized from older formats after an extensive restoration process, and we are happy to offer them freely. The complete audio recordings from this meeting set will be made available later in the year in the subscriber-only podcast through Apple Podcast – https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-barry-long-podcast/id1709595005 and Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/34rcMFK6b4CcicY7JDxo9fIn this episode, Barry describes the journey from attachment to detachment. He explains that while the beauty of existence — in flowers, the sea, and human love — is real and wondrous, it is attachment to form that causes suffering. Living the spiritual life leads to living the life divine — a state that occurs when one ceases to live from the self, and a greater intelligence begins to live through one. As this unfolds, true union — free of possession — becomes possible, and one draws to oneself one's perfect mate. Barry says – "...your whole life is about bringing her or him into existence. Not someone outside you. Not a dream. But the true woman, the true man, the divine principle behind the body. And no one else can do it for you. You must live, love, and surrender enough for your true mate to be made real in your life."Barry goes on to describe the nature of the self: a band within the psyche where emotions and attachments dwell. He says that human suffering arises from being possessed by negative emotions rooted in the psychic realm, accumulated over generations. By acknowledging the good in life, loving purely without attachment, and surrendering the selfish will, individuals gradually illuminate their perfect body — a deeper, divine something within the psyche. The true purpose of life, Barry says, is to light up this perfect body through love and detachment, by undergoing the circumstances of one's life rightly — by suffering rightly. In time, a moment comes when suffering is no longer needed, when the self falls away and the psyche stands purified — and what is is the life divine.~Extracts:"The first sign of the true love coming into existence is that you never, ever want to be apart. You never want to go anywhere alone, unless you have to, of course. Always together. Always. But if you want to go and be alone — if you want to go down to the football club or have a night out with the girls — well, you've got some time to keep going until you bring this extraordinary principle of woman or man into existence in a body.""When you're next angry, do you see that you're being manipulated? This is what we are talking about — starting to live the spiritual life — when you can see that your anger, your resentment, your negativity is not love but possession. Until you desist from being identified with these emotions, until you are purified of them, you cannot truly love or bring the perfect love into existence."~Further reading:

In the profound Trika text virūpākṣapañcāśikā, we learn:vimatipadamaṅga sarvaṃ mama caitanyamātmanaḥ śarīramidam |śūnyapadādīlāvadhi dṛśyatvāt piṇḍavat siddham || 2 ||O dear one, all this from the void state to the play of the Divine including even that which is heretical (i.e impure), since it appears in Consciousness, is verily established as my own body for I myself am Consciousness!sampanno'smi kṛśo'smi snihyatkaraṇo'smi modamāno'smi |prāṇimi śūnyo'smīti ca ṣaṭsu padeṣvasmitā dṛṣṭā || 3 ||“I am rich”, “I am feeble”, “I am affectionate”, “I am happy”, “I am living”, “I am the void”: the self is seen in these six states! From this we can understand that the "Self" is quite elastic! It can identify with possessions, with the body, with the thoughts and emotions in the mind, with the vitality or flow of energy and also with the void! Even saying "no-self" is a kind of self-identification! Notice: the objects, the physical body, the mental body, the energy body and the void body...these are all ways the Self can identify itself. But what exactly is the Self? It is Pure Consciousness, with the ability to expand outward or contract inward. The Self is essentially elastic in nature. Ego is not an illusory thing to be renounced with a Shakti, a power to be reclaimed and properly channelled. The Indian-born tabla player and composer, teacher, and advocate Zakir Hussain, son of Ustad Alla Rahka, who passed away in late 2024, wasn't just a virtuoso improviser - he was one of the world's exceptional percussionists, working in many genres, and was the world's preeminent tabla master. He was a great communicator in many musical languages, including jazz, Afro-Cuban rhythms, Nigerian talking drums, or Indonesian gamelan; he was also a great listener and a bringer of joy (editor can't help herself.) One of the most exciting ways that Zakir Hussain shared tabla specifically, and percussion more broadly was by way of the Masters of Percussion Tour – which was exactly as stunning and marvelous as a music fan (especially a drum nerd) might ever imagine. Zakir turned the tabla into a global instrument by way of his incredible collaborations, playing with everyone from George Harrison to Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead, from John McLaughlin's Shakti and Yo Yo Ma's Silk Road Project; he's laid down beats for Scottish fiddlers Charlie McKerron (Capercaillie) and Patsy Reid (formerly of Breabach); played concertos with western orchestras, with and without banjo player Bela Fleck and bassist Edgar Meyer, and performed and recorded with scores of Indian classical musicians. Zakir Hussain enjoyed the different challenges that each new collaborator “will throw at him”. For this edition of the Soundcheck Podcast, Ustad Zakir Hussain joined Pandit Rahul Sharma, the son of illustrious santoor master Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, who established the pedigree of the santoor within Indian Classical Music. Pt. Rahul Sharma has since built on his father's style, “taking the santoor to new corners of the world”, (Darbar.org). Hello beloved, Point blank. Your deepest yearning isn't for the next relationship, career move, or achievement. At your core, all you truly want is to be happy, to feel okay, to experience peace and love. This is what the soul craves, always. If you're sincere about your spiritual growth, you'll eventually see that it all boils down to one thing: - allowing distorted energy—your chi, your Shakti—to re-orient and flow freely.

Shivaratri is made up of two words – Shiva & Ratri. The word Shiva means – “Shete tishthati sarvam jagat Yasmin sah shivah shambhuh vikararahitah” Shiva is the One in whom the entire universe rests, who is changeless and brings auspiciousness to everyone. Shiva is Pure Consciousness or the very life-spark in our heart. Consciousness is Sat-Chit-Ananda or Satyam Shivam and Sundaram. Shiva means auspicious, beautiful. Consciousness alone is truly beautiful because true beauty never fades, is eternal and changeless. Our Body, Mind & Intellect are inert. They appear to be sentient and beautiful only because of reflection of Consciousness. Ratri is formed of the samskrit root – Raa, which means to give. That which provides happiness and bliss is one meaning of Ratri. Parvati is one who is born to Parvatraj Himalaya. She signifies Prakriti or Shakti. She is the source of all matter, energy and diversity. In Samskrit, Shiva is masculine gender word. Ratri is feminine gender, is symbolic of Prakriti or Shakti. Maha-Shivaratri is the union of Shiva & Shakti(Parvati). It is also the night which provides illumination and bliss when Jiva unites with Shiva. May we do tapasya like Mother Parvati, with single-pointedness, subtlety, purity and persistence to discover our oneness with Bhagawan Shiva and truly celebrate Mahashivaratri. #shiva #shivaratri #shivarathri #hindu #hindufestival#parvati[marriage, shiva, festival, celebration, fasting, penance, union, wedding]

Life can be lived at varying levels, though most people are trapped in the cycles of seeking desires and avoiding fears. The key to deeper living lies in addressing internal blockages and embracing life's unfolding with acceptance. This frees you to connect with the natural flow of inner energy, or Shakti, which results in a profound sense of love, joy, and unity with existence.
