Send us a textStep into the raw, powerful journey of Justin, a guest returning to the Self Reflection Podcast, as he joins host Lira Ndifon for an unvarnished conversation on mental health. Justin Witte, author of "The Shadowed Soul" and "A Vicious Cycle," shares his extraordinary experience navigating a life marked by profound childhood abuse, chronic suicidal depression, and a litany of diagnoses including schizoaffective bipolar type, ADHD, dyslexia, PTSD, and an organic brain disorder. Now 19 years sober, Justin reveals how self-reflection, a radical shift in perspective, and the ancient practice of meditation (specifically Chautaka or single-pointed concentration) became his roadmap to rewiring his brain and finding inner peace, even when traditional medications failed. This episode fearlessly confronts the escalating mental health crisis, particularly among men. Lira cites jarring statistics: in 2022, men died by suicide 3.85 times more often than women, with white men accounting for 68.46% of these deaths. Suicide was the 11th leading cause of death in America, with 49,476 lives lost and an estimated 1.6 million attempts. Justin unpacks complex societal factors contributing to this crisis, including the isolating impact of technology, shifting gender roles, economic pressures requiring higher education, and the often-unacknowledged struggles of men in modern society. He argues that the increasing disconnect from genuine human interaction and the curated realities of social media exacerbate feelings of worthlessness and contribute to the alarming rise in depression and anxiety. Justin offers profound insights into the nature of suffering, panic attacks, and the illusion of external reality, drawing from his unique blend of personal experience, Western science, and Eastern philosophies like Vedanta. He vividly describes the terrifying grip of panic attacks and how he overcame them through focused meditation, emphasizing the neuroplasticity of the human brain. This conversation is a vital call for empathy and action, urging listeners to seek support if struggling, and to embrace the transformative power of self-expression and connection. Discover how to reframe your thoughts, challenge perceptions, and navigate your own path to healing, purpose, and a life lived in conscious awareness.Support the showCall to Action: Engage with the Self-Reflection Podcast community! The twenty-second saying of Jesus in the Gospel of Thomas is the clearest example of Christian nonduality that we have in any gospel. Some of these metaphors in this passage are familiar to us from other sayings in the Gospel of Thomas, as well as similar sayings in the canonical gospels. Others we have not come across before. Jesus saw some babies nursing. He said to his disciples, "These nursing babies are like those who enter the kingdom." They said to him, "Then shall we enter the kingdom as babies?" Jesus said to them, "When you make the two into one, and when you make the inner like the outer and the outer like the inner, and the upper like the lower, and when you make male and female into a single one, so that the male will not be male nor the female be female, when you make eyes in place of an eye, a hand in place of a hand, a foot in place of a foot, an image in place of an image, then you will enter the kingdom."View Marshall's books here: https://www.amazon.com/stores/Marshall-Davis/author/B001K8Y0RU

This immersive meditation uses the metaphor of a tree to guide us through the illusion of separation and the quiet journey back to our true nature. Through poetic reflection and direct felt experience, we explore how thought becomes identity, how suffering arises through forgetting, and how, like the tree, we can return to the peace that never left us. A powerful invitation to simplify 'enlightenment', to see clearly the dualistic nature of thought, and to remember yourself home. Please forgive my use of “it” when referring to the tree in this meditation. For the sake of clarity in the visualization, our more-than-human kin was momentarily framed as an “it”—but this is a limitation of language, not of truth. I hope it doesn't distract from the deeper message of interconnectedness and remembrance. Thank you for being present in this space and for holding these words for a moment - may they be of use to anyone suffering, lost, or unsure right now. Much Love, SezSupport the show✨ If you'd like to explore more of my work, whilst deepening your connection to the truth of who you are, you can find weekly, unpublished poems & audio essays on my Substack, and find supportive courses on my website and Insight Timer. The twentieth saying of Jesus in the Gospel of Thomas is one that is familiar to Christians who have read the canonical gospels. It is known as the parable of the Mustard Seed. Thomas' version goes like this:The disciples said to Jesus, "Tell us what the kingdom of Heaven is like." He said to them, "It's like a mustard seed, the smallest of all seeds, but when it falls on prepared soil, it produces a large plant and becomes a shelter for birds of heaven."At first hearing it may sound identical to the New Testament parable. But listen again. Here is the version found in the Gospel of Luke. Pay attention to the differences. Then Jesus asked, “What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it to? It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds perched in its branches.”They sound similar, but the small differences make a big difference. Let's look at the differences and what they teach us about the Kingdom of Heaven, which is Jesus' term for Divine Awareness.View Marshall's books here: https://www.amazon.com/stores/Marshall-Davis/author/B001K8Y0RU

Last week, to celebrate Easter, we gave a special talk on the Sermon of the Mount from a Tantrik point of view. Not only is the Sermon on the Mount an excellent piece of spiritual literature which like the Gītā essentializes and makes practical the highest spiritual teachings of all time but also, there is a beautiful book by a similar title: "The Sermon on the Mount according to Vedanta" by Swami Prabhavananda. As such, in this talk, we reference some profound insights from that book, give them a Tantrik spin and also make a few broad points about the Avatara in Tantrik theology. It is a wonderful talk to put out around Akshaya Tritiya because it covers the most fundamental and yet deepest and most profound of spiritual ideas in both theory and practice. I pray the ideas in this discussion will ground you and remind you of what is most important in spiritual life and inspire you to live according to the highest of ideals!Jai Mā! Send us a textWalking away from a lifelong religious belief system is rarely a simple process. Josh Gaines knows this firsthand, having spent 26 years deeply immersed in evangelical Christianity before embarking on a spiritual journey that would transform his understanding of reality. In this profound conversation, Josh shares how he navigated the complex terrain of religious deprogramming. When the foundations of his Christian faith began to crumble, he found himself asking the fundamental question: "If this isn't true, then what is?" This curiosity launched him into exploring practices he once dismissed as "for crazy people"—Western ceremonial magic, Vedanta teachings, Kriya yoga, and Kabbalah among them. In this episode, we discuss angelic communication, third eye awakening, and the physical sensations of spiritual development. What makes Josh's perspective particularly valuable is his ability to recognize common threads across seemingly disparate spiritual traditions. Rather than rejecting Christianity entirely, his explorations gave him a newfound appreciation for Christian mysticism and the teachings of Christ viewed through a non-dogmatic lens. Through his Deprogramming Christianity workshops and one-on-one coaching, Josh now helps others navigate this challenging transition, creating safe spaces for questions that many religious environments don't allow. To learn more about Josh or to book a coaching session with him:Visit: www.doctor-gaines.comFollow him on TikTokClairvoyaging is now a fiscally sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a 501(c)(3) charity, so any donations are now tax deductible. This week's show is with Dr. Daniel M. Ingram, MD MSPH, a retired emergency medicine physician who works to improve the global relationship of science, clinical practice, mental health and the public to the phenomena that might be referred to as spiritual, meditative, energetic, mystical, psychedelic, magical, and related phenomena. To those ends, he is currently the founder, philanthropic supporter, and volunteer CEO and Board Chair of the Emergence Benefactors registered charity, and chief organizer and co-founder of the global Emergent Phenomenology Research Consortium. He is currently involved in neurophenomenological research of advanced meditative states with colleagues at Harvard and has been a participant in numerous fMRI and EEG studies of advanced meditators, including at Harvard, Yale, U Mass, and Vanderbilt. He has published scientific articles in Pediatrics, Child Abuse and Neglect, and the Journal of Medical Toxicology. He is the author of Mastering the Core Teachings of the Buddha, co-author of The Fire Kasina, and co-founder of the Dharma Overground. His work has been featured in The New York Times, Esquire, Vice, Wired, BBC Radio 4, Evolving Dharma, American Dharma: Buddhism Beyond Modernity, Dan Harris' 10% Happier Podcast, Slate Star Codex Blog, Buddha at the Gas Pump, Meaning of Life TV, Deconstructing Yourself, Spiritual Explained website, Guru Viking, Buddhist Geeks, Cosmic Tortoise, Startup Geometry, Imperfect Buddha Podcast, and many others. In this conversation, Lian and Daniel explore what awakening really means, weaving between the modern non-duality and Neo-Vedanta ideas such as "you're already awake" and the more structured progressive paths, filled with stages, techniques, and deepening insights. They gently reveal the hidden challenges and the powerful gifts each path offers, opening up a conversation that's both timeless and deeply relevant. Lian shares how awakening can happen spontaneously, profoundly reshaping lives, while Daniel draws from his extensive experience in various spiritual communities and traditions. Together, they explore the subtle nuances of spiritual growth, shadow integration, and the vital practice of staying present to this very moment. Their personal experiences effortlessly blend with mythic and traditional wisdom, highlighting the beautiful paradox of human growth. They also discuss practical tools like the five Buddha families, attachment styles, and why working with our shadows is essential. Daniel stresses how important personalised practice and honest community feedback are on this journey. Their conversation gently challenges the seductive myth of spiritual perfectionism, offering instead a grounded, compassionate invitation towards continual transformation and deeper self-awareness. Send us a textExploring Vedanta Sara verse 13 and 14, we examine the purpose of spiritual actions and worship in preparing the mind for self-realization while distinguishing between practices that purify and those that lead to ultimate liberation.• Daily rituals, austerities and penances primarily serve to purify the mind (chitta shuddhi)• Worship practices directed toward Saguna Brahman help enhance mental concentration• Even profound mystical experiences are insignificant compared to ultimate self-realization• Secondary results like attaining higher realms still operate within duality, not liberation• True liberation comes from recognizing our nature as formless awareness, not from rituals• Western interpretations often overlook the crucial role of the heart and devotion in non-duality• Self-realization requires both knowledge that points to awareness and surrender through devotion• A guru helps by both paving the path and guiding you to walk it toward liberationIf you're striving for enlightenment, a better life, or any other goal, put your full faith and focus into it. In this episode we look at the fourteenth saying in the Gospel of Thomas.Jesus said to them, "If you fast, you will give rise to sin for yourselves; and if you pray, you will be condemned; and if you give alms, you will do harm to your spirits. When you go into any land and walk about in the districts, if they receive you, eat what they will set before you, and heal the sick among them. For what goes into your mouth will not defile you, but that which issues from your mouth - it is that which will defile you."This saying deals with the issue of religion, and in particular religious practices or disciplines. Jesus previously dealt with this subject in part in the sixth saying. Here in the fourteenth saying, Jesus goes deeper into the topic of spiritual practices. He mentions the same four practices of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving and diet. But in this saying he emphasizes the dangers inherent in religious practices. View Marshall's books here: https://www.amazon.com/stores/Marshall-Davis/author/B001K8Y0RU

Dr. Neil Schuitevoerder, a clinical and organizational psychologist, has been doing spiritual practices for 50 years. He's no longer interested in his ego's story, so here's the story of his soul's evolution: He had early instruction in how to use a pendulum, which led to the opening of his intuitive knowing, which has continued to expand into higher stages. His intense meditation practices in his 20s led to illness, and he was guided to return to a householder life as husband and father. He continued practices in mystical Judaism, then turned to Vedanta, kundalini, and other Hindu practices. With a kundalini master, and with the Diamond Approach technique of Inquiry, he opened the higher chakras and began to experience states of unity and nonduality, first with a near object, such as a tree, then with a far object, such as the galaxy. Slowly, the dualities of self/other, near/far, past/future, dissolved, and his knowing expanded to include the distant past, his past lives, his rebirth in this lifetime, and his ability to travel in subtle bodies to the subtle planes, including conversing with the deceased. His mind emptied out, then his body became empty, containing the whole galaxy, a nondual body. Then his astral body emptied out, and he no longer "traveled" but was united with the subtle mental and causal planes, all within him. The state of bliss is always accessible. The local identity of Neil remains when he functions in the world, as he lives in dual and nondual levels of awareness simultaneously. Today we look at the thirteenth saying in the Gospel of Thomas. “Jesus said to his disciples, "Compare me to someone and tell me whom I am like." Simon Peter said to him, "You are like a righteous angel." Matthew said to him, "You are like a wise philosopher." Thomas said to him, "Master, my mouth is wholly incapable of saying whom you are like." Jesus said, "I am not your master. Because you have drunk, you have become intoxicated from the bubbling spring which I have measured out." And he took him and withdrew and told him three things. When Thomas returned to his companions, they asked him, "What did Jesus say to you?" Thomas said to them, "If I tell you one of the things which he told me, you will pick up stones and throw them at me; a fire will come out of the stones and burn you up." This saying in the Gospel of Thomas stands in clear contrast with the famous passage in the canonical gospels where Peter gives his famous confession of faith.  The Gospel of Mark says: “Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.” “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.” Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.”In Matthew's gospel Peter gives a longer and more famous answer: “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.”The difference between the canonical and noncanonical accounts is the difference between traditional Christianity and Christian nonduality. View Marshall's books here: https://www.amazon.com/stores/Marshall-Davis/author/B001K8Y0RU
