Rahul Gandhi's erudition was in full display at a Cambridge event, with declaration of India as a Union of States, and China as a nation/country. With his pet peeves against Modi and BJP in full display, is it time for another toolkit operation? Advaita Kala and Vibhuti Jha join Sanjay Dixit to discuss.
In this episode I talk about anxiety and fear. According to recent articles there is an epidemic of anxiety not only in the United States, but in much of the Western world. Addressing fear and anxiety can help us be happier and healthier emotionally, as well as decrease violence in society. Awakening to our true nature and the true nature of reality can eliminate, or at least reduce dramatically, fear and anxiety.
Christianity tends to focus on love. At least at its best it does. Historically Christianity has too often focused on secondary matters like doctrine, tradition, rituals, rules, or church structure – or at its worst money and power. But the New Testament says God is love, and Jesus said that the spiritual life can be summed up in the two commands to love God and love one's neighbor. So love is at the heart of Christianity.Nonduality tends to focus on consciousness. It is sometimes summed up in the three words Sat-Chit-Ananda, often translated Being-Consciousness-Bliss. I am not saying love is absent. Love is present in the Buddhist teaching on compassion. But it seems that the nature of consciousness and reality is the main focus. In Christian nonduality I try to show how these two – love and consciousness - are connected, and are in fact one: nondual.
In Christianity there is a lot of talk about who Jesus is. The Gospel of John is famous for its seven “I am” statements in which Jesus identifies himself using symbols and metaphors. “I am the Bread of Life. I am the Light of the world. I am the Way, the Truth and the Life” and so forth. They are all based on the famous “I am” statement in the story of the burning bush in Exodus, where God says “I am what I am.” These “I Am” statements got me wondering if there were also “You are” statements made by Jesus, telling us what or who we are. So I did a search for these words in the gospels. I was not looking for what the apostle Paul or Peter or James says about us. I was not looking at what later Christianity says about us, but only what Jesus taught about us. After sifting through these “you are” statements, I found three statements that Jesus made about who we are. So let's see what Jesus says about us. What did Jesus teach about our spiritual identity?
Discovering the truth of who you are doesn't require a certificate of realization. You don't need to understand Sanskrit or Advaita to know the truth of who you are. The only requirement is the willingness to investigate the thought of who you are. Many people have outgrown the religion that they used to be a part of. I explore how and why people outgrow religion, especially conservative forms of Christian religion. I also look at the idea of spiritual growth. Is growth real, or is it better seen as a sudden awakening to the Nondual Reality that is always present? Or are they both metaphors? Jesus talked a lot about the growth of the Kingdom of God. I explore several of those stories, especially the Parable of the Sower.
This is a recording of selected pointers for meditation taken from the book "The Truth Is." Formatted as a guided meditation. Sri H. W. L. Poonja (1910 -1997) was born in Lucknow, India, known as "Poonjaji" or "Papaji", was an Indian sage who taught Self-enquiry as advocated by Ramana Maharshi.
Title: Summary of Thirteen ChaptersSummary of earlier chapters of Gita; introduction to 14th chapter55th through 72nd verses of the 2nd chapter of Gita discuss the characteristics of an enlightened person. The 26th chapter of Dhammapada also discusses similar characteristics.Such a person is not worried when there is a problem, and he is not over-joyed when somethingpleasant happens. He has no special admiration for others, nor does he hate anyone. This spiritualstability is an essential characteristic. He is contented, happy within, and has a deep sense of innerfulfillment. He identifies himself with the divinity within and feels oneness with other beings. The 4th chapter of Gita has a description of karma yoga. It describes how we can begin our spiritual journey any moment by bringing an element of spirituality into our everyday life.In the next few chapters, there are discussions of the highest philosophical concepts of Advaita. In the 12th chapter, Lord Krishna describes the characteristics of a devotee of God.In the 8th through 11th verses of the 12th chapter, Lord Krishna describes the spiritual journey of a seeker in descending order of evolution.8th verse: “You fix your mind and intellect on Me. Thereupon, you will always live in Me.”When we identify with a higher ideal, both mentally and intellectually, we live in that ideal and that ideal lives in us. This is the highest state of devotional evolution. For seekers who have not reached this highest state, Lord Krishna provides alternative options in the 9th - 11th verses.9th verse: “If you cannot fix your mind and intellect on Me, then you can reach the higher goal through Abhyasa-Yoga (uniting with God through repeated practice, such as Navadha Bhakti).”10th verse: “If you are incapable of doing Abhyasa-Yoga, then do all your work as My work.”To do Abhyasa-Yoga, we need a friendly mind. A beginner's mind may not cooperate when he startsspiritual practices. This is due to karmic blocks or accumulated samskaras which make him act in acertain manner. Such a mind should be given healthy food first and turned into a friend. This can bedone by bringing spirituality to all secular work. How? By thinking that everything is God's work. Then his mind will evolve to a stage where he can practice Abhyasa-Yoga.11th verse: “If you are unable to do your work as My work, then offer the fruits of your actions to Me.”For example, when one returns home after a day's work, he can mentally say: “Whatever I have done today and its results, I leave it to God.” Slowly his old mind will disappear, and a new mind will take its place, enabling him to do his work as God's work.In the 13th and 14th verse, Lord Krishna describes eleven characteristics of an ideal devotee. When speaking about the characteristics of a devotee, Lord Krishna does not mention rituals or going to a temple. He essentially says that all genuine devotees are good human beings. He says that the devotee who is dear to Him has the following characteristics. (1) He does not haveanimosity or ill-feeling towards anyone (2) He is a friend of everyone (3) He is sympathetic towardseveryone (4) He is free from ideas of possession (5) He looks upon happiness and unhappiness with equanimity of mind (6) He is forgiving (7) He is contented (8) He is always connected with the divine (9) He is self-controlled (10) He is strong-willed in pursuing his ideal (11) His mind and intellect are fixed on God.The 13th chapter says that everything in this world is nothing but a combination of this divine spark and external elements. The 63rd and 67th verses of the 18th chapter of Gita describe the attitude of the teacher of Gita, Lord Krishna. In the 63rd verse, he says: “I have taught you this great spiritual truth. You analyze what I have taught you, use your own reasoning, and do what you want.” This verse emphasizes the importance of spiritual freedom and encourages one to think for oneself. It also indicates that we can only learn from a book or teacher what we deserve to learn, what our mind is ready to learn. In the 67th verse, Lord Krishna says: “Don't ever discuss this subject with a person who does not have the mental purity, who has not practiced austerity, who is impolite, who is arrogant, who is jealous of his own teacher, and who is not ready to do good to anyone.” This verse emphasizes that to learn spiritual subjects, we must have a sense of sanctity and sacredness. The 14th chapter is important because it describes the secret of plurality in this world. There are many common factors such as the divine spark that is present in everyone. The plurality comes from the three gunas – sattva guna, rajo guna and tamo guna – which constitute the entire material world. Our temperaments are determined by a combination of the three gunas – sattva guna, rajo guna and tamo guna. Sattva guna is the highest and most sublime. It manifests itself as wisdom and serenity. Rajo guna manifests itself as dynamism and ambition. Tamo guna manifests itself as laziness and delusion.
The two BBC documentaries on Modi are clearly a hit job. Part 2 makes out a case of Modi against Muslims. The template is pretty much the Global Left template against India, Hindus and Modi. Advaita Kala and Dr. Rajeev Mishra join Sanjay Dixit to discuss.
This is a selection of key pointers from Nisargadatta taken from the texts "I am That" and "The Nisargadatta Gita" - intended as a guided meditation. Original text of "I am That" edited and compiled by Maurice Frydman. The Nisargadatta Gita edited by Pradeep Apte.
The inspiration for this episode comes from an email I received from a spiritual friend in Melbourne, Australia. He sent me an interpretation of Jesus' parable of the two foundations. Jesus used the illustration or two men who built a house on the sand and the rock. I tie this into Jesus' response to Peter's profession of faith that Jesus is the Christ. Jesus replied, “On this Rock I will build my church.” They both refer to Nonduality as the bedrock of reality.

Title: Practicing Detachment13th Chapter: Verses 29, 30, 31, 32; Summary of 2nd chapter29th verse: “A spiritual person realizes that all actions of the mind and body (thoughts, words and deeds) take place at the superficial or material level. Our true nature is Atman, which is unchanging and actionless. This Atman when joined with samskaras makes us do things.”30th verse: “A person who understands that the world of plurality that we experience is built upon one single point – he attains the highest realization.”All experiences that we have are expressions of the same divine spark in innumerable forms. Spirituality expands into the realm of everyday life. In the beginning, there is a line of demarcation between the secular and spiritual. As we evolve, the secular becomes spiritualized – the line of demarcation disappears. Work becomes an act of worship. We can start our spiritual journey at any moment in life. Karma Yoga is the art of doing all activities from a spiritual perspective. When we begin to do our actions as karma yoga, we board the bus for our spiritual destination. When Buddha saw old age, disease and death, and the serenity of a monk, he began his spiritual journey.31st verse: “The Atman is beginningless. It neither acts nor is attached.”In the 18th verse of the 4th chapter, Lord Krishna says: “One who sees inaction in action, and action in inaction, is a Yogi.” He is (1) Buddhiman – wise person, who understands Swadharma (2) Yuktaha – a Yogi (3) Krtsna-Karmakrt – does everything with a smile, unattached. We should do our actions with full efficiency but stay detached from the results. Then we won't have anxiety and mental fatigue from worrying about the results.32nd verse: This verse compares the Atman to space. Space is everywhere but it is not affected by anything. It remains detached but accommodates everything. Similarly, the Atman is present everywhere but remains unaffected.Gita begins with an invocation which in summary means: “O' Mother Gita, I bow down to you who rain down blessings of the nectar of Advaita.”47th verse of the 2nd chapter says: “You have the right to action, but not to the results thereof. You should not be attached to inaction either.” Gita presents Swadharma as a way to stay properly active. Swadharma is our natural way of work and that we feel perfect harmony with. When we do our Swadharma, we derive inner contentment.Swami Trigunatitananda's was a traveling monk before coming to the US. In 13 years, he built the old temple, shaped the Vedanta Society, built a printing press, preached across the city and inspired people to renounce. All along, he never felt he was doing anything.Gita ends with the verse: “Wherever the ideals of action and contemplation are present, there will be victory, prosperity, success and stability of life.”

In this episode I ponder our true identity in Christ. Then I explain how this can be experienced by means of meditation on scripture.
A while ago I read about the early life of Ramana Maharshi - how when he was a teenager he was overwhelmed by a sudden, extreme fear of death. Then he lay down on his back and imagined he was dead. I think I read this in the preface to a book of his teachings, but I couldn't find it. So I did an internet search and found the details of the account on his official website. It happened in July of 1896, and it was actually the event that precipitated his spiritual awakening. His account is meaningful to me because it has many similarities with the experience that prompted my spiritual awakening. In this episode I read his account and compare it with my experience. Then I describe a spiritual practice of dying that may help those who are seeking to awaken to True Self.
When people ask me about spiritual practices or disciplines, I generally do not recommend any. The reason I don't recommend any is because people tend to view practices as a means to an end. They think that if they do certain things then they will result in a spiritual goal. Yet even when I don't recommend practices, people will press me on it. They say that they know it is all grace and that there is nothing they can do to wake up spiritually, but they are hoping there is something that might help in some small way. Today I am going break my pattern and suggest a practice.

Advaita and Healthy Mind
Acharya Shunya is a truth-teller who facilitates authenticity, self-remembrance, and divine feminine pathways to awakening. After centuries of living in patriarchal societies, many women don't realize how powerful they are—or how much they've been enculturated to keep their true nature hidden. In Roar Like a Goddess, trailblazing Vedic spiritual teacher Acharya Shunya empowers women everywhere to step into their divine immensity and lead powerful, abundant, and wise lives through her revolutionary revisioning of ancient India's primary goddess archetypes: The Goddess Durga—A role model who vanquishes internalized misogyny and institutionalized patriarchy, Durga teaches you how to take back your full feminine power. The Goddess Lakshmi—Known for her beauty and generous spirit, Lakshmi guides you to cultivate unshakable inner contentment and soul-aligned abundance. The Goddess Saraswati—The ultimate teacher of our most profound journey to Self, Saraswati illuminates the gifts of wisdom, peace, and inner freedom. Sharing classic myths, original insights, and empowering practices, Shunya offers a profound process for awakening the many faces of the goddess within. Episode Highlights: * Why Women's Anger is Sacred and why we must learn to express it * How the Goddesses can serve as inspiration for modern feminism * One of the most fundamental aspects of self-empowerment is cultivating a healthy sense of self-worth. * How the goddesses teach us to love ourselves * Acharya's journey as a spiritual teacher who became the head of a 2,000-year-old lineage. * How she walks the line of being bold in her assertions, as well as inclusive in her teachings * Why we should encourage the carnal pursuit of pleasure * Similar to the pursuit of sex, we — particularly as women — are taught that the goal of material wealth is “non-spiritual,” but this is not true * Why women's power is not always available uniformly, and how can it be accessed from within. The first female lineage-holder of her distinguished Vedic tradition, Acharya Shunya is an internationally renowned scholar, teacher, author, speaker, and scholar of nondual wisdom (Advaita) from India and a classically-trained master of Yoga and Ayurveda. She is the Founder of The Awakened Self Foundation and the nonprofit Vedika Global, Inc., platforms headquartered in Northern California that empower, educate, and inspire a global community of students through online courses, workshops, and retreats. We are deep within the Christmas season now, and holiday activities are in full swing. So it is a good time to contemplate the meaning of Christmas. Too often the choice seems to be between Santa Claus or the baby Jesus, secular or theistic, or perhaps opt for celebrating the winter solstice as an alternative. But it is possible to celebrate Christian holiday spiritually from a nondual perspective. The holiday of Christmas expresses the oneness that is our true nature and the nature of the one reality.

Music: Suni-Ai (Listening Meditation) - Snatam Kaur
Having been a Christian for all of my adult life and a Baptist pastor for nearly all of that, I can say from firsthand knowledge that the essential difference between Christianity and spiritual awakening is that the first is secondhand religion and the other is direct realization.
In this episode of “Letting Go & The Greatest Secret,” Francis Lucille describes the beautiful garden that is our true nature. He helps us see the belief that our true nature is somehow dependent on our human body/mind creates our misery. I receive a lot of emails from people who used to consider themselves Christians and were active in the church but no longer. They can no longer accept the literal interpretation of Scripture and the dogmatic nature of the Christian religion. They have dared to think outside the traditional Christian box, they are either been rejected by the church or feel alienated from the church and from Christianity. Some people have had spiritual experiences – glimpses of nondual reality – and are no longer comfortable with the dualistic language, theology, and rituals of the church. They are especially not comfortable with the Christian attitude that only Christians know the truth. For that reason they have left the church and explored other spiritual traditions. Yet a part of their heart is still in Christianity. A part of them misses the church, misses Jesus, and misses Christian worship and fellowship. They wish there was a way to be a part of a church but express their Christianity in a way consistent with their new broader awareness of spiritual Reality. That is the type of person who listens to my channel and many email me.The good news is that Christianity and nonduality are not incompatible. I call it Christian nonduality. In fact the original message of Jesus, whom we call the Christ, is the nondual Reality that is at the heart of all spiritual traditions. So we can be followers of Jesus and affirm nondual awareness. But can we still be part of a church? Can we still go to worship in a church? I say yes!

Advaita and The Law of Attraction
There is a theme in both the Old and New Testaments that points to the heart of nondual awareness. It is expressed most clearly in the Book of Exodus. Moses asks to see God's glory and God responds, “You cannot see My face; for no one shall see Me and live.” The Bible repeatedly says that no one can see God and live. God is described as holy, and no mortal can be in the presence of the holy God according to the Bible. In other words the ego – the separate self – cannot survive the presence of God. The little self is consumed in the fire of the One Self of the universe, who is God. The false self burns up in the presence of the true self. In the Presence of the One True God, the One Divine Self, all false selves disappear. There is only one Reality and that is God. This is a nondual Reality. Like a fire it consumes all others. It shakes the foundations of our lives (to use another biblical metaphor) and what remains – what is unshakeable – is Real.

The common understanding of our place in the universe is that we are tiny human creatures on a planet in a solar system in the Milky Way galaxy, which is one of billions of galaxies in a vast universe. Anyone who has laid on their back on a summer evening watching shooting stars has experienced this sense of wonder at how small and seemingly insignificant our place is in the universe. There is something to be said for this state of wonder. It is a type of spiritual awe.But that is only half the story. From a physical point of view we are insignificant short-lived lifeforms in a vast universe. But there is another side of the story, a spiritual side. Together those two sides make one whole, like the Yin-Yang symbol shows two sides of a whole. From a physical point of view we are in the universe, but from a spiritual perspective the universe is in us.
Sometimes I wonder if there is anything more to say in these episodes. Then I get emails from listeners which remind me there is still more to say because the gospel of nonduality is so easily misunderstood. Nondual awareness is so simple it is missed. It is so close that people don't see it. It is hiding in plain sight. Jesus said, “The Kingdom of the Father is spread out upon the earth and people do not see it.” Tony Parsons calls it the open secret. The common mistake I hear in questions and remarks is that people assume that what they are looking for is not here now. That it is out in the future. It is one practice or one insight or one teacher or one retreat or one teaching away. Then they will get it. They assume something is lacking now. The only problem – if you want to call it that, which it really isn't unless you see it as a problem – is that we forget who and what we are. We have spiritual amnesia. The misapprehension of our essential identity is evident in most of the questions that people ask. Alan Watts has a famous book entitled “The Book On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are.” That title sums it up. I read it first over fifty years ago, but it was only ten years ago that I knew what he was talking about.Watts was right. People don't know who they are. That is the problem. For that reason every question they ask comes from who they are not. In other words it is a case of mistaken identity.
Its meaning is: “O' Mother Gita, I bow down to you. I invoke your divine presence in my heart. This texthas 18 chapters and was preached by Lord Krishna to his disciple Arjuna. It was written by the greatsage, Vyasa, and is placed in the middle of a much great work, Mahabharata. Its central theme is thephilosophy of Advaita – it preaches that creation is one spiritual family and all religions represent somany paths leading to the same spiritual goal. “The 12th chapter is about Bhakti Yoga – the path of Devotion. The three other paths taught in the Gitaare Jnana Yoga – the path of knowledge, Karma Yoga – the path of selfless actions, and Dhyana Yoga –the path of self-restraint.In the 13 th and 14 th verses, Lord Krishna describes the characteristics of a devotee. He does not mentionrituals or going to a temple. He essentially says that all genuine devotees are good human beings.15 th verse: “A devotee is not agitated by anyone, and nobody is agitated by him. He is free from elation, envy, fear and anxiety.”18 th and 19 th verses: “His attitude is the same towards a friend or someone hostile to him, towards honorand dishonor, towards praise and criticism, towards heat and cold, and towards happiness and misery. He is content with whatever comes his way and is not attached to a place of residence – such a devoteeis dear to Me.”A devotee is well-established in strong faith and inner equanimity, because he has a sense of innerfulfillment. The line of demarcation between the duals disappears for him. The world does not agitatehim – he has no reason to be excited, envious, fearful or anxious. There is no otherness for him – he seesthe whole world as one spiritual family. He does not do anything to violate the Ritm of nature.20 th verse: “Anyone who practices this great spiritual discipline with sanctity and sacredness, withunselfishness, with a universal outlook – he is extremely dear to Me.”In the Bhagavata Purana, there is a dialog between King Nimi and the Nava Yogis. In answer to theKing's question: “Who is an ideal devotee of God?”, one of the sages gives the following answer: “Theone who sees the presence of God in all beings, and who sees the presence of all beings in God. “Bhagavata Purana describes that we can reach this highest level of devotion by practicing NavadhaBhakti - Sravanam (Hearing about God), Kirtanam (Chanting His Name and Glory), Vishnu smaranam(Remembering Him), Pada sevanam (Serving His Lotus Feet), Archanam (Worshipping Him), Vandanam(Prostrating before Him), Dasyam (Being His Servant), Sakhyam (Befriending Him), and Atma Nivedanam(Surrendering to Him). The 12th chapter of Gita can be seen as a commentary on an important verse in the Bhagavata Purana. The essence of this verse is: “A spiritual seeker can begin his journey at a temple or with a book. That isjust a starting point. As he moves forward, he starts seeing the presence of God outside the templewalls. As he evolves further, he sees the presence of God everywhere and in everything. Everythingbecomes an act of worship. Every thought becomes a meditation, every word becomes a mantra, everyaction becomes an act of worship, every travel becomes a pilgrimage, every movement becomes acircumambulation around the deity, and the whole life becomes an offering to God. “What is the residential address of God. Lord Krishna says that his permanent residential address is theheart of all beings.Every Gita chapter ends with a verse which starts as an auspicious prayer referring to the unity andoneness of existence. It then says that Gita was written by Vyasa and appears in the sixth section ofMahabharata. Finally, it equates Gita to the Upanishads. It teaches the science of spiritualenlightenment through four important paths.
This is a reading for meditation of core couplets from the Yoga Vasistha Sara (Essence). The Yoga Vasishta is a work of about 32,000 Sanskrit couplets, traditionally attributed to Valmiki, the author of Srimad Ramayana. It is a dialogue between Sage Vasishta and Sri Rama, during which Advaita (the doctrine of non-duality) in its pure form of ajatavada (theory of non-origination) is expounded, with illustrative stories in between. Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi used to refer to Yoga Vasishta frequently and incorporated six couplets from it in His Supplement to Forty Verses (verses 21 to 27).
Love is still alive and well in spirituality. It is the heart of what I call Christian nonduality. Love is the way of spiritual awakening. It is the Tao of Christ, the Way of Christ. Love may seem to be a dualistic activity because it appears to be about relationships, and relationships imply two or more, hence dual. But in actuality love transcends duality. It is an expression of unity that transcends and embraces duality.
